Problem

  • A tab logs Failed to load bundled module 'broken.ts'. This is not a dynamic import, and therefore is a bug in Bun's bundler. and reloads when a saved module imports a file with a build error.
  • Cause: neither text of throwNotFound (hmr-module.ts:849) for a missing module names a build error.

Fix

  • The loader throws Cannot load 'broken.ts' because it has a build error. when the overlay lists that file. An HTML page with an accepting module then waits for the next build.
  • Correct: only the tab knows if it has old code for the file. Then it takes the update.
  • Verified: 15 new tests in test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts fail on main. Also hot, html, css.
  • Self-reviewed: 33 concerns raised, 32 addressed. Rejected: a reword of the old texts (server runtime too).

Background

  • A failed file has no code. The tab's overlay lists its build error by file name, the module id.
  • Considered a new text only: the tab stays on the build error page after the import is removed. The dev server cannot know a tab's modules.

Downsides

Notes

What changes

  • The text comes from the one function behind the three places where the loader misses a module (hmr-module.ts:314, :426, :572), and from dynamicImport (:158), which leaves before that function. So import, export ... from, require(), a CommonJS module that requires the file, and import() all get it. On main, require() of the file reports Failed to resolve dynamic import 'broken.ts', and import() reports the browser's own error.
  • The error is a BuildErrorImport with that name. Chrome prints the class name of an error that has no name of its own, and a release build minifies the class name.
  • The reaction changes in one place, the catch of a hot update (hmr-runtime-client.ts:107). It sets the flag that an uncaught error already sets (hasFatalError, client/overlay.ts:16): the next hot update with code reloads the page. A hot update with no code reloads it too when the build error that the tab waits for is no longer listed, for example after the fix of a stylesheet.
  • The tab does not wait when the page removed the overlay, for example in a dispose callback. It then reports the error and reloads at once, as on main.
  • Only the tab of an HTML page waits (config.main ends in .html). A tab of a framework route reports the new text and reloads at once, as on main. The dev server can answer the reload of such a route with its script from before the save: it keeps that script cached when the browser code is reached only through the router's clientEntryPoint (fix(bake): invalidate affected framework client bundles #46705). On main the code of the fix then reaches a tab that runs, and the later saves are hot updates. A tab that waited loaded the old script at the fix, and each later save of the importer logged the sentence and reloaded.
  • While the tab waits, it does not send the runtime errors of the page to the dev server and does not add them to the overlay. The browser console still shows them.
  • The catch reads the overlay again. A module that failed under try/catch keeps its error and throws it again after the fix. The tab then reports it and reloads at once.
  • bun:afterUpdate fires for the update that waits, as it does for an update with no code (hmr-runtime-client.ts:230). It pairs with the bun:beforeUpdate that replaceModules fired. Vite's client also fires vite:afterUpdate after an update whose import failed (vite 6.2.3, client.mjs:201-203 and :912). The events table in docs/bundler/hot-reloading.mdx says so now.
  • Both old texts stay for a module that the tab lacks and that has no build error listed. A test pins both. require() gets the second text for a string literal too, because hmr.require loads every id as a dynamic one (hmr-module.ts:147).

Not changed

Other designs

  • A new text with main's reload: the tab reloads at the save, and after "add the import, remove it" it stays on the build error page.
  • A hold in the dev server: it sends one update to all tabs. A tab that loaded the file before it broke can take the update, and only that tab knows it. The dev server also builds the importers of a broken file, because the broken file owns its error. dev server: fail the importers of a file that was not there to read #46983 is about the other case, a file that was not there to read.

Tests

…ile with a build error

A tab has no code for a file that failed to build before the tab loaded
it. A hot update whose module imports such a file cannot run. The tab
logged "Failed to load bundled module 'x'. This is not a dynamic import,
and therefore is a bug in Bun's bundler." and reloaded at once.

The loader now throws `Cannot load 'x' because it has a build error.`
when the overlay of the tab lists a build error for that file. It does so
for `import`, `require()` and `import()`. The tab keeps the overlay on
screen and loads the page again at the next build that has code for it,
or that removes the build error.

The tab does not wait when the page removed the overlay. While it waits,
it does not report the runtime errors of the page that the update left
half applied.

The server runtime and the error page runtime do not change.

Status

How to reproduce, on a release build of main:

  1. Serve one HTML page with Bun.serve({ development: true, routes: { "/": index } }). Its script index.ts calls import.meta.hot.accept(). A file broken.ts holds export const broken = ;, and nothing imports it.
  2. Open the page in a browser.
  3. Save index.ts with the line import { broken } from "./broken";.

On main, the tab logs Failed to load bundled module 'broken.ts'. This is not a dynamic import, and therefore is a bug in Bun's bundler. and reloads onto the build error page.

On this branch, the tab shows the build error of broken.ts in the overlay and does not reload. It reloads when broken.ts is fixed.

The first new test in test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts runs these steps.

Walkthrough

The client HMR runtime recognizes imports blocked by build errors. When the overlay awaits an eligible error, the runtime avoids reporting the failed update and reloads when the error clears. Regression tests cover import failures, recovery, and reload behavior.

Changes

Build-error HMR wait

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build-error lookup and wait state
src/runtime/bake/hmr-module.ts, src/runtime/bake/client/overlay.ts
The HMR module checks whether client imports have build errors and throws BuildErrorImport for matching errors. The overlay adds helpers to find build errors, record an awaited error, and check whether it has cleared.
HMR wait and reload lifecycle
src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts, docs/bundler/hot-reloading.mdx
The runtime registers the overlay lookup and handles awaited build-error rejections without logging or reloading. It reloads when the awaited error disappears. The documentation adds waiting for a build error to the bun:afterUpdate description.
Build-error recovery regression coverage
test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts
Tests cover build-error imports, waiting and recovery, and cases that report errors or reload immediately instead of waiting.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether waitForBuildErrorIn can hit an unassigned domShadowRoot (overlay.ts:230): buildErrors is only populated through onServerErrorPayload, which always runs updateErrorOverlay and so mountModal while the map is non-empty, so the lookup cannot return true before the root exists. I also traced awaitedFile: it is never cleared, but every path out of the wait ends in fullReload, which discards the module state, so no stale wait survives.

Extended reasoning...

The change is confined to the browser-side Bake HMR runtime (hmr-module.ts, overlay.ts, hmr-runtime-client.ts) plus one docs row and ~12 new dev-server tests; it touches no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface. One confirmed behavioral finding on framework-route tabs is posted inline, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the unmounted-overlay and stale-state concerns that were examined and ruled out from the code.

Comment thread src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts
The dev server can answer the reload of a framework route with the script
from before the save. A tab of such a route that waited for the fix then
loaded that script, and each later save of the importer logged
"Failed to load bundled module" and reloaded.

A tab of a framework route now reports the import and reloads at once, as
before. The code of the fix then reaches a tab that runs, and the later
saves are hot updates. The text of the report is the new one.

I re-reviewed the new push and found no bugs; the .html gate in waitForBuildErrorIn plus the framework-route test address the reload-loop concern from my earlier inline comment. Since this adds a new wait state to the client HMR runtime with documented trade-offs (merge order with #46705/#46801, runtime errors muted while waiting), a maintainer's look at the design is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • Whole-class coverage: all three throwNotFound callers and the dynamicImport early path now hit the same hasBuildError check; config.main is the entry's pretty path, and HTML routes are .html-only, so the gate cannot misclassify.
  • Packet ordering: index_failures publishes the errors packet before HotUpdate in finalize.rs, so buildErrors is current when the catch handler and awaitedBuildErrorIsGone() read it; a hot update is published on every build with subscribers, so the CSS-only fix path cannot be missed.
  • The onRuntimeError early return cannot leave a tab stuck: hasFatalError is already set when awaitedFile is, so the next update with code or the error's removal still reloads.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches the Bake dev server's client HMR runtime (hmr-module.ts, hmr-runtime-client.ts, client/overlay.ts), one docs table row, and adds 14 devTest cases in test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts; it touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The second commit (2dbc7aa) is a one-line gate plus a test that directly addresses the only finding from the prior review, and no new findings surfaced this run. Deferred rather than approved because the change introduces a new client-side wait state whose interplay with other open PRs and whose muting of runtime-error reports while waiting are design choices a maintainer should weigh; no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files and no third-party objections are visible in the timeline.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

🟡 nit (optional): HTML pages whose file uses a custom html-loader extension (a bunfig [loader] entry such as ".htm" = "html") never wait; they keep the base reload onto the error page. The gate at src/runtime/bake/client/overlay.ts:231 is config.main.endsWith(".html"), but the dev server bundles every HTML route with Loader::Html whatever its extension (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3593 via Flags::HTML). Fix: decide by route kind rather than file extension, e.g. have the server put an HTML-route flag into config (or expose the main module's loader), so every HTML route waits while framework routes still fall through to the reload.

Why this was flagged

A bunfig.toml [loader] table may map any extension to the html loader (src/bunfig/bunfig.rs:1109-1144), and the runtime turns any file with loader Html into an HTMLBundle (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3325-3341), so Bun.serve({ routes: { "/": index } }) with index imported from index.htm is an HTML route. The dev server appends such a route with Flags::HTML (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/bundle.rs:227-232) and the bundler forces Loader::Html for it (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3593), so config.main is written as the relative path index.htm (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/incremental_graph.rs:1831-1840). When a hot update of that tab imports a file with a listed build error, the catch at src/runtime/bake/hmr-runtime-client.ts:118 calls waitForBuildErrorIn, which returns false at overlay.ts:231 because the main id does not end with .html; the tab calls fullReload() at hmr-runtime-client.ts:123, landing on the build error page exactly as on the base branch. No safeguard covers this: the extension is a proxy for the route kind that the server already knows.

Verification: An HTML route whose file does not end in ".html" (bunfig [loader] ".htm" = "html") served by the dev server, with a hot update that imports a file carrying a build error. src/runtime/bake/client/overlay.ts:231 gates the wait on config.main.endsWith(".html"). For such a tab, waitForBuildErrorIn returns false, so hmr-runtime-client.ts:118-123 falls through to console.error(e); fullReload();.

Kept as is. The check is a stopgap for one defect of the dev server: it can answer the reload of a framework route with the script from before the save (#46705). When that is gone, the condition goes too, and every tab waits. A route-kind field in config needs a Rust change and a field in every page for that stopgap.

The miss is on the safe side. An HTML page under another extension keeps the reaction of main (report, then reload onto the build error page), with the new text. The PR notes now name this case.

Track all pending build-error files.

Rapid hot updates can start overlapping replaceModules callbacks. A second waitForBuildErrorIn call overwrites awaitedFile. If the first file clears while the second remains, a later no-JavaScript update checks only the second file and does not reload the tab. The fatal-error guard does not prevent callbacks that started before the guard was set.

About the note on overlapping hot updates (awaitedFile holds one file): I kept one file.

Two hot updates must overlap and fail on two different files for the second file to replace the first. The tab then waits for the second file. It still reloads at the next hot update that has code, and at the build that removes the build error of the second file. No order leaves the tab in the wait after that error is gone.
