dev server: a page keeps a barrel that a build only bundled again - #46879
A page with no import.meta.hot.accept() above the barrel reloads ([Bun] Hot update was not accepted) on the first build of another route and each save of an importer.
Fix
The dev server lists each barrel of the client graph whose text and live re-exports are those of its last print.
A page keeps a listed barrel that evaluates to the exports that it has. Any other is a changed module, as before.
Verified: 44 new tests in test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts (18 fail on main), then test/bake/.
A barrel that loads one more module reloads a page: 3 of 12 builds with lucide-react (main: 12).
Not changed: the server, framework routes, barrels with export * outside node_modules or a "use client" directive.
Per bundled client file: +30 instructions. Release text: +6,144 bytes. No listed barrel: +0 bytes, +0 heap cells.
Notes
What the dev server lists
The change is for the client graph only. The server graph, the server runtime and the reload list of framework routes are as on main.
Ast::hmr_stable_reexports (src/js_parser/p.rs) is true when the module function has only imports, and a file outside node_modules has a getter for each export: no export * and no export * as. A file in node_modules has a copy of each export.
apply_barrel_optimization sets InputFileFlags::IS_BARREL for a barrel with that flag. It returns before that for an entry point, and a saved file is an entry point of its build.
barrel_print (incremental_graph.rs) lists a file with IS_BARREL when the hash of its text and of which import records are live is the hash of its last print. For a barrel in node_modules each live import also has to be in node_modules. A module of a plugin namespace is not: the parser gives it getters that read other modules, as for a file outside node_modules. Any other print of the file forgets the stored hash: a save, a statement of its own, an import of a file that a save can change.
process_chunk_dependencies skips trace_dependencies for a listed barrel when the call left the import edges of the file as they were. So the cached script of a route stays.
The list is the third argument of a hot update chunk.
When a page keeps a listed barrel
keepsBarrel in hmr-module.ts keeps a barrel only if all of these are true:
The barrel is loaded from the definition that the registry has. State.Replaced marks a module with a new definition that replaceModules did not load yet: an update that waits in a dispose handler.
Each import of the barrel is loaded, and no module is twice in its imports.
The import, export and star lists of the new definition are those of the definition in the registry.
The new definition is evaluated two times on module objects that are not in the registry. A value that is the same in both is a copy of an export, and the barrel has to have the same value. A value that is not the same in both is an object that the definition makes: the namespace of a deferred re-export.
The definition reads no export of a CommonJS module in that check, because such a read can run code of the module. In place of those exports it gets one object that throws on each operation (a revoked Proxy). A barrel in node_modules reads the exports of its imports when it evaluates, so with a CommonJS import it is a changed module. A barrel outside node_modules has a getter for each export and reads nothing. An ES module in node_modules has a getter only for a local that it assigns again, so a read of its exports runs no other module.
No module that the barrel has a copy from is a changed module of this update (keptBarrels).
A kept barrel is not evaluated. Its exports object, its importers, and each object that require() returned for it stay as they are. No accept callback runs for it. Each other barrel takes the path of main.
A page passes no list to replaceModules in two states, because a reload is what makes it right again: it lacks a stylesheet (lacksStylesheet), or it got a server-side update of its route that had JavaScript for the browser (routeUpdateHadModules in hmr-runtime-client.ts). A server components page does not run that JavaScript, and a framework with client pages does not load the page again for it. On main the next barrel with no accept boundary reloads such a page, and that is kept.
Why the change does not evaluate a barrel, and does not touch the server
The first commit (9805cf6) loaded a listed barrel again when it imported all that the loaded one imported. The review found a new import that needs a module which the page never got (Failed to load bundled module 'helper.ts').
A later local design evaluated a listed barrel again in place. A review of it found seven defects. Examples: an object from require() did not get a new key, a frozen namespace made each update fail, and an error of one module was reported only when every other load was done.
A copy that a barrel has outside node_modules goes out of date when any module below it loads again. So the dev server does not list a barrel with export * there.
On main each build that reaches a barrel traces it in the server graph. That trace also repairs older states: a route that kept the stylesheet list of a save of the barrel, and a viewer that a build with no reload event did not tell. A skip of that trace left these states, so the server graph is as before.
Why a barrel that loads more is a changed module
A page cannot check all that a new module needs. A chunk lists static imports only, so a require() in a try block of a new module took its fallback with no error. An update has only the stylesheets that its build printed. On main the reload gives the page each module and stylesheet of its route.
Limits
As on main:
A build that makes a barrel load one more module reloads a page with no accept boundary.
A framework route is told to reload by each build that reaches a barrel of its server graph. A server components page does not apply the JavaScript of such an update.
A barrel with export * or export * as outside node_modules is a changed module.
A barrel with a directive that the parser keeps, such as "use client", is a changed module. framer-motion 11.18.2, @tanstack/react-router 1.170.46 and react-router 7.18.4 have one.
A barrel with two imports of one file (two spellings of one path) is a changed module.
A barrel in node_modules that imports a file outside node_modules, or a module of a plugin namespace, is a changed module.
A barrel in node_modules with a copy of an export of a CommonJS module, or with its namespace, is a changed module. On a page a JSON, text or asset file is a CommonJS module too. The check stops at the read with a TypeError that it catches, one time for each update. A debugger that pauses on caught exceptions stops there.
The first build after a save of the barrel handles it as a changed module once more.
A page that lacks a stylesheet passes no list, so that the update can make it load again.
Other modules that a build bundles again still reload the page.
Two cases are not as on main. Each needs more than one rare condition:
An update keeps a barrel in node_modules and waits in a dispose handler. A second update, with no such barrel in it, loads a barrel again that the first one has a copy from, because its file changed on disk. Then the first barrel has the old copy until the next build that reaches it. On main the first update evaluates it after the wait.
A page opens its socket after two builds that print a barrel, and the first of them is a save that changes which export is which with the same import and export lists (export { q as a, p as b } for export { p as a, q as b }, after the imports of p and q). The page keeps the old barrel at the next build. On main that build reloads the page. A page that opens its socket late misses each save of that time on main too.
A module that accepts a barrel gets no call for a build that only bundles the barrel again. This is also true when a module that the barrel re-exports accepts its own update in that build. main calls it in both cases.
Other open PRs
An order with the other open changes on these lines (a proposal, @alii please confirm or change it):
The end state is that an unchanged barrel is not sent. Two changes do that: the branch robobun/bdc0b481/dev-barrel-cache-answer (not a PR yet) in is_file_cached, and fix(bake): preserve module identity and HMR update order #46704 for a client module with identical output. With them a page does not get most listed barrels. Then the tests of this PR that expect a listed barrel to be a changed module change. Examples: a build reloads a page that lacks a stylesheet and a barrel with two imports of one file is a changed module.
This PR is the rule for a barrel that still arrives. It works on the loader of main, so it can go first.

Per bundled file of the client graph that is not a barrel: 21 instructions in receive_chunk and 9 in process_chunk_dependencies, counted in the disassembly of the release build. A file of the server graph: 0. process_chunk_dependencies of the server graph has 806 instructions in both builds.

Suites:
Release build: 29 files, 0 failures. The files are all of test/bake/, test/bundler/bundler_barrel.test.ts, test/cli/bake/bake.test.ts and test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-html.test.ts.
Debug build: bundle.test.ts 98 pass. production.test.ts and react-spa.test.ts have tests that stop at the 5 s limit in some runs. The debug build of main has the same.
The 52 barrel tests: 3 of 3 runs on the release build with no failure. The 46 tests before the last commit: 7 of 7 runs, 2 of them with six busy loops beside the run.
Self-review
Eight self-review passes as the change grew. Each pass tried to break the change on debug and release builds, and checked each finding a second time. 210 concerns raised, 191 addressed. The design changed three times for them: the first one evaluated a listed barrel again, the second one kept it on a page and on the server, and this one is for the client graph only.
Not addressed:
A barrel with a directive such as "use client" is not listed.
Framework routes and the server are not changed.
The two cases under Limits that are not as on main.
The TypeError that the check catches for a barrel in node_modules with a CommonJS import.
The test file takes about two times as long: 26 s to 57 s on a release build here.
The check of the test fixture for a reload at the end of a test is off on Windows.
A barrel that has deferred a re-export is bundled again by every build
that reaches it, and the HMR runtime looked for an accept boundary above
it each time. is_file_cached now records the copies that it refuses for
that reason only. receive_chunk lists the recorded files that are still
barrels, and the update names them. The runtime evaluates a listed
barrel again in place when it imports all that the loaded one imports.
A listed barrel with the same imports is not traced to its routes.
The client fixture of the dev server tests now fails a test that ends
while a reload that it did not expect is pending.
Reproduced on main 179664e: a page of /first is open, and the first build of /third reloads it. Both routes import the same export of one barrel of a sideEffects: false package. A save of a module that imports the barrel does the same.
The 44 new tests in test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts show it: bun bd test test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts -t "barrel optimization" fails 18 of them on main, and all pass on this branch (debug and release builds).
A build that makes the barrel load one more module (/second reads another export) still reloads the page, as on main.
The diff is green on build 133460 (head 9278b29). All 160 test jobs passed: 140 on Linux (debian, ubuntu, alpine, ASAN), 16 on Windows (2019 x64 and 11 aarch64) and 4 on macOS (aarch64 and x64).
One job is red, and it does not touch this diff: :windows: x64 - verify-baseline. The JPEG codec test of test/js/bun/jsc-stress/fixtures/simd-baseline.test.ts timed out after 5000 ms under CPU emulation, and the process then crashed. The same tree passed this job in build 133422.
Seven tests failed one time and passed when they ran again. None of them is in test/bake.
The one retrigger of this PR is used. The build turns green when the red job runs again.
❌ Baseline verification failed on Windows x64 — 1 check(s)
The baseline build crashed or failed tests under Nehalem (SSE4.2, no AVX/AVX2/AVX512) emulation (not an unsupported-instruction fault). See the step log for the crash output.

Walkthrough
The change marks stable re-exports, tracks reprinted barrels during incremental builds, and passes their IDs to client HMR processing. The client checks whether listed barrels can remain loaded. Development-server tests cover barrel updates, reloads, stylesheet delivery, and overlapping builds.

Summary
Mark stable re-export modules src/ast/ast_result.rs, src/js_parser/p.rs, src/bundler/bundled_ast.rs, src/bundler/Graph.rs, src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs
The AST records whether HMR lowering meets the stable re-export conditions. Bundled AST conversion preserves the flag, and barrel optimization sets the graph’s IS_BARREL flag for eligible files.
The dev server hashes eligible barrel prints, records matching reprints in client chunks, adjusts dependency tracing, and adds reprinted barrel IDs to client HMR output.
The client checks whether reprinted barrels match loaded module definitions and exports. It passes eligible IDs to replaceModules only when route-update and stylesheet conditions allow.
Test barrel HMR and reload behavior test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts, test/bake/dev/harness.test.ts, test/bake/bake-harness.ts, test/bake/client-fixture.mjs
Tests cover unchanged and changed barrels, exports, route updates, stylesheet delivery, and overlapping updates. Harness changes expose synchronization controls and detect unexpected client reloads.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether a server/SSR copy of a barrel bundled for the first time in a graph could be wrongly listed and skip the stale trace in receive_chunk — it cannot: is_file_cached returns None from the check! macro before it reaches the barrels_bundled_again record when that graph has not bundled the file yet, so only a copy that graph already holds is listed.
Extended reasoning...
The change threads a new "reprinted barrel" list from is_file_cached through IncrementalResult, receive_chunk, the chunk footer and replaceModules in hmr-module.ts, touching no security-sensitive surface. Two confirmed findings in the HMR runtime are posted inline; this note only records one additional concern that was examined and ruled out from the code.
The dev server lists a barrel of the client graph when its text and its
live import records are those of its last print, and when no save can
change a value that the barrel has a copy of. It skips the route trace for
such a barrel when the imports of the file are also as they were.
A page keeps a listed barrel as it is when the new definition evaluates to
the exports that the barrel has. Any other barrel is a changed module, as
before. The server graph and the server runtime are as before.

dev server: do not invalidate a barrel that a build only bundled again
dev server: a page keeps a barrel that a build only bundled again

Both findings of the review of 9805cf6 are confirmed. e01e54e handles them, and it changes the design more than the findings ask for.
A new import of the barrel can need a module that the page does not have (hmr-module.ts:859). Reproduced on 9805cf6: the page logged Failed to load bundled module 'helper.ts', then reloaded. A check of the static imports is not enough. A page cannot see require() and import() targets. An update does not have a stylesheet that an earlier build printed. So a barrel that loads more is a changed module again, as on main.
A second evaluation of a barrel that is loading (hmr-module.ts:652). The code that this PR adds writes State.Stale to no module, and it evaluates no module of the registry. A barrel that is loading is a changed module, as on main.
What the PR does now:
The dev server lists a barrel of the client graph when its text and its live re-exports are those of its last print.
A page keeps a listed barrel as it is when the new definition evaluates to the exports that the barrel has. Any other barrel is a changed module, as on main.
The server graph and the server runtime are as on main.
I first tried to evaluate a listed barrel again in place, on a page and on the server. Reviews of that found states that were worse than on main. Two examples are the server after an update that failed, and a route that kept an old stylesheet list. A barrel that stays as it is has none of them, and the server has no reload to fall back to.
The cost: a build that makes the barrel load one more module still reloads a page. In a lucide-react session of 12 builds that is 3 reloads (main: 12). Framework routes are as before. The PR body is updated.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟣 src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs — pre-existing: a dev-server page that uses a barrel's namespace dynamically (e.g. import * as Icons from 'lucide-react'; Icons[name]) reads undefined after any other route's first build re-bundles that barrel. Phase 1 seeding stores a namespace or require()/import() request only as the per-build RequestedExports::All at barrel_imports.rs:553-554 and :605, never through persist_barrel_export, so a later build in which the importer is cached and the barrel is re-parsed defers every re-export not named elsewhere. Fix: persist the "all exports" request on the DevServer like named aliases (barrel_needed_exports or a parallel set) and honor it in apply_barrel_optimization alongside the alias lookup at :201-210, covering star imports, require() and import() of a barrel.
Why this was flagged
Route /a has a.ts with import * as Icons from 'lucide-react' used only through computed access, so scan_imports.rs:458-473 leaves a single alias_is_star NamedImport. Build 1 parses a.ts: schedule_barrel_deferred_imports sets requested_exports[barrel] = All at src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs:553-554 and does not call persist_barrel_export, so barrel_needed_exports holds nothing for that page. The barrel was registered in an earlier build or is registered by a later one, so DevServer::is_file_cached (src/runtime/bake/dev_server/bundle.rs:89) returns None for it on every later build while a.ts stays cached. A user then opens /b whose b.ts imports { Home } from the same barrel: a.ts is not parsed, the barrel is re-parsed, apply_barrel_optimization_impl finds requested = Partial{Home} at :167-171 plus persisted aliases at :201-210, and marks every other record IS_UNUSED at :262-267. The open /a page receives the barrel as a changed module, full-reloads, and the regenerated route bundle carries the deferred print, so Icons[name] is undefined. The base branch behaves identically.
Verification: Pre-existing: the defective seeding lines are unchanged by this PR. src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs:553-554 writes RequestedExports::All only into the per-build requested_exports; persist_barrel_export is called only in the named-alias branch at :565-567, and the require()/import() branch at :605 likewise only sets the per-build All. The base branch fails the same way by the same route.
keepsBarrel evaluates the new definition of a listed barrel to compare it
with the barrel that the page has. A barrel in node_modules reads the
exports of its imports when it evaluates, so an accessor of a CommonJS
module ran two times for one update.
The definition now gets a revoked Proxy in place of the exports of a
CommonJS module. A barrel that reads one is a changed module, as on main.
A barrel outside node_modules has a getter for each export. It reads
nothing when it evaluates, and a page still keeps it.
The dev server lists a barrel in node_modules only if each live import is
in node_modules. A module of a plugin namespace is lowered as a file
outside node_modules: its re-export is a getter that reads another module.
Two findings came in for b3b7b91. 761d961 answers the first one. The second one is a defect of main that this PR does not change.
The check of a kept barrel reads an export of a CommonJS module two times (hmr-module.ts:866). Confirmed on b3b7b91: a page logged read 2 and read 3 for one update, and main reads the export one time.
keepsBarrel now gives a definition an object that throws on each operation, in place of the exports of a CommonJS module. A barrel in node_modules that reads such an export when it evaluates is a changed module, as on main.
A barrel outside node_modules has a getter for each export and reads nothing when it evaluates. A page still keeps it. The one-line fix from the finding stops that barrel too. The new test a page keeps a barrel with a getter for an export of a CommonJS module fails with it.
A review of the fix found a second path to the same accessor, through a module of a plugin namespace. The dev server no longer lists a barrel in node_modules that imports one.
5 new tests. The PR body no longer has this case under "not as on main".
The cost: a barrel in node_modules that copies from a CommonJS module is a changed module again, as on main. On a page a JSON, text or asset file is a CommonJS module too. rxjs, lodash-es, date-fns, lucide-react and @heroicons/react still have one reload in five builds (main: five).
A page that reads a barrel namespace by a computed name gets undefined after the first build of another route (barrel_imports.rs:553). Confirmed on main, with one more condition: an earlier build deferred a re-export of the barrel. I ran the sequence on release builds of main and of this PR.
Both reload the page at the first build of the other route, and the page then logs undefined. That build prints the barrel with other live re-exports than its last print. So the dev server does not list it, and the page handles it as a changed module.

A module in node_modules has a getter for an export that it assigns again,
as a compiled TypeScript enum does. The getter returns the variable of the
module, so the check of a kept barrel can read it.
One finding came in for 761d961: the check of a kept barrel reads a getter of an ES module in node_modules two times (hmr-module.ts:875). I checked it and did not change the check.
In node_modules the HMR lowering makes a getter only for a local that the module assigns again. The getter returns that variable, for example get Kind() { return Kind3; } for a compiled TypeScript enum. A read of it runs no code of the module, so a second read has no effect.
The dev server lists a barrel in node_modules only if each live import is in node_modules. So the check meets no getter that reads another module.
The suggested change gives such a module the object that throws. Then each barrel over a module with an enum is a changed module again, as on main.
503dcda adds one test that holds this: the first build of a route that reads a barrel with a copy of an export that its module assigns again does not reload an open page. It fails on main, and it is the only test that fails with the suggested change. The commit changes test/bake/dev/bundle.test.ts only.

What the dev server lists
The change is for the client graph only. The server graph, the server runtime and the reload list of framework routes are as on main.
Ast::hmr_stable_reexports(src/js_parser/p.rs) is true when the module function has only imports, and a file outside node_modules has a getter for each export: noexport *and noexport * as. A file in node_modules has a copy of each export.apply_barrel_optimizationsetsInputFileFlags::IS_BARRELfor a barrel with that flag. It returns before that for an entry point, and a saved file is an entry point of its build.barrel_print(incremental_graph.rs) lists a file withIS_BARRELwhen the hash of its text and of which import records are live is the hash of its last print. For a barrel in node_modules each live import also has to be in node_modules. A module of a plugin namespace is not: the parser gives it getters that read other modules, as for a file outside node_modules. Any other print of the file forgets the stored hash: a save, a statement of its own, an import of a file that a save can change.process_chunk_dependenciesskipstrace_dependenciesfor a listed barrel when the call left the import edges of the file as they were. So the cached script of a route stays. When a page keeps a listed barrel
keepsBarrelinhmr-module.tskeeps a barrel only if all of these are true:State.Replacedmarks a module with a new definition thatreplaceModulesdid not load yet: an update that waits in a dispose handler.Proxy). A barrel in node_modules reads the exports of its imports when it evaluates, so with a CommonJS import it is a changed module. A barrel outside node_modules has a getter for each export and reads nothing. An ES module in node_modules has a getter only for a local that it assigns again, so a read of its exports runs no other module.keptBarrels).A kept barrel is not evaluated. Its exports object, its importers, and each object that
require()returned for it stay as they are. No accept callback runs for it. Each other barrel takes the path of main.A page passes no list to
replaceModulesin two states, because a reload is what makes it right again: it lacks a stylesheet (lacksStylesheet), or it got a server-side update of its route that had JavaScript for the browser (routeUpdateHadModulesinhmr-runtime-client.ts). A server components page does not run that JavaScript, and a framework with client pages does not load the page again for it. On main the next barrel with no accept boundary reloads such a page, and that is kept. Why the change does not evaluate a barrel, and does not touch the server
Failed to load bundled module 'helper.ts').require()did not get a new key, a frozen namespace made each update fail, and an error of one module was reported only when every other load was done.export *there. Why a barrel that loads more is a changed module
A page cannot check all that a new module needs. A chunk lists static imports only, so a
require()in atryblock of a new module took its fallback with no error. An update has only the stylesheets that its build printed. On main the reload gives the page each module and stylesheet of its route.Limits
As on main:
export *orexport * asoutside node_modules is a changed module."use client", is a changed module. framer-motion 11.18.2, @tanstack/react-router 1.170.46 and react-router 7.18.4 have one.TypeErrorthat it catches, one time for each update. A debugger that pauses on caught exceptions stops there. Two cases are not as on main. Each needs more than one rare condition:
export { q as a, p as b }forexport { p as a, q as b }, after the imports ofpandq). The page keeps the old barrel at the next build. On main that build reloads the page. A page that opens its socket late misses each save of that time on main too.A module that accepts a barrel gets no call for a build that only bundles the barrel again. This is also true when a module that the barrel re-exports accepts its own update in that build. main calls it in both cases.
