Problem

Fix

  • The six reads use the package.json parser, as bun pm pack does. It differs from parse_utf8 in two options only, so a file that parsed before gives the same tree.
  • Verified: test/cli/install/package-json-comments.test.ts and four cases in bun-create.test.ts (20 cases, 0 pass on main). Also bun-pm-diff, bun-pm, bun-info.
  • Self-reviewed: 15 concerns raised, 15 addressed. The same bug in the bun check note for missing dependencies gets its own change.

Background

  • bun_parsers::json has a strict entry point (parse_utf8) and one that allows comments and trailing commas (parse_package_json_utf8). Only the caller knows that its bytes are a package.json file and not a registry response.
  • Considered a shared cached reader (WorkspacePackageJSONCache): it does not fit a tarball or a template, and adds a deep clone. A rename of parse_utf8 fixes none.

Downsides

  • bun pm trust and bun create now rewrite a file that has comments as plain JSON, so the comments leave the file (bun update removes comments in package.json #11536).
  • Plain JSON: .text +1,024 bytes, 2 instructions fewer per parse, allocator calls and syscalls equal.
Notes

What each command did with a comment or a trailing comma in package.json, and what it does now

Read Command On main With this change
pm_trusted_command.rs:609 bun pm trust q, bun pm trust --all the scripts run, then error: failed to parse package.json: SyntaxError, exit 1, no trust in package.json or bun.lock exit 0, the trust is recorded
pm_diff_command.rs:2256 (package_json_notes) bun pm diff a.tgz b.tgz no note for a new postinstall postinstall script added: ...
pm_diff_command.rs:627 (read_dir_tree) bun pm diff ./a ./b the folder is read whole (A secret.txt) the folder is read as bun pm pack takes it
pm_diff_command.rs:350 (package_json_name) bun pm diff ./pkg 1.0.0 error: ... has no package.json "name" to look up in the registry ./pkg → name@1.0.0
the same helper bun pm diff with no arguments error: no package name to compare against name@latest → .
pm_view_command.rs:101 bun info, bun pm view looks up the name of the folder on the registry looks up name from package.json
create_command.rs:849 bun create <template> dest (local folder and GitHub) error: JSON does not support trailing commas, exit 0, dest/package.json has 0 bytes the name is rewritten, the bun-create section is applied and removed

In package_json_notes one closure parsed both the package.json file and the registry's entry for the version. It is now two closures, so the registry entry stays on the strict parser.

History and reach

Not changed, and why

  • bun check reads package.json with its own strict reader. That is on purpose for module resolution (bun check - a TypeScript type checker builtin to Bun #44361). The N dependencies in package.json are not installed. Run: bun install note uses the same reader, so it is absent for a file with comments. That is the same class of bug, in src/sema/driver, and is left for its own change.
  • normalize_json (pm_diff_normalize.rs:966) is the one strict reader of package.json left in bun pm diff. Such a file shows as not parsed, with a text diff. The canonical print drops comments, so a lenient read first needs a rule for a change that is only in a comment.
  • For a package.json that no parser accepts, the fallbacks are as before: bun pm diff reads the folder whole, finds no name or prints no notes, bun info uses the folder name, bun create prints the error and exits 0 with an empty destination file. bun pm trust stops before any script (failed to read trustedDependencies).
  • bun pm trust writes 2-space JSON for every file, as on main.
  • import pkg from "./package.json" with { type: "json" } stays strict. So do registry responses in pm_view_command.rs, pm_diff_command.rs, publish_command.rs, upgrade_command.rs and create_command.rs (one of them carries the source name package.json).
  • No guard against a new strict reader ships here. parse_package_json_utf8_with_opts still accepts strict options.

Tests

  • 16 cases are in one new file. It serves a registry from the test process, so it needs no network. Like npmrc.test.ts and escape-control-characters.test.ts, it tests one rule across several commands. The 4 bun create cases are in bun-create.test.ts, as one matrix over a local template and a GitHub template.
  • The new file is also where a debug ASAN build can show fail-before and pass-after. bun-pm.test.ts and bun-pm-diff.test.ts are not green on that build: in two runs, 5 and 1 cases of the first and 3 and 6 cases of the second exceeded the 5 s timeout. This PR does not touch those cases.
  • Each read runs with a trailing comma and with a comment: bun pm trust q, bun pm trust --all from a workspace member, the four bun pm diff reads, bun info, bun pm view, bun create from a local folder and from GitHub.
  • Existing files on a debug build of this branch at main 9b4284f: bun-create 144 pass (with the 4 new cases). With a per-test timeout of 180 s, because the debug build is slow: bun-pm-diff 75 pass and 1 skip, bun-pm 154 pass, bun-info 75 pass.

Measurements (release builds of main 5866b5f with and without this change, linux x64, with size, nm and gdb. strace, valgrind, perf and bloaty are not installed on the machine.)

  • Release binary: .text +1,024 bytes (81,071,045 to 81,072,069), .rodata +0 bytes (size -A bun-profile). The stripped bun file has the same size (106,501,896 bytes). Symbols: one out-of-line copy of parse_package_json_utf8 (115 bytes). The two closures of package_json_notes become one that is 713 bytes larger, and collect_notes grows 48 bytes.
  • Instructions through the parse of a plain-JSON package.json, bun info with no name: 5966 on main and 5964 on the branch for a 63-byte file, 3 identical runs each. For a 5.9 KB file: 122155 to 122158 on main, 122153 to 122156 on the branch (gdb stepi count from the entry of parse_classic to its return).
  • Allocator calls inside the parse, plain JSON: bun info 10 to 10 (63 bytes) and 37 to 37 (5.9 KB), bun pm trust 10 to 10, bun create 11 to 11, bun pm diff 15, 14, 14, 14 on both (gdb counting breakpoints on the mimalloc entry points and operator new).
  • Syscalls on paths that end in package.json, plain JSON: bun pm trust 27 to 27, bun pm diff 14 to 14, bun info 10 to 10, bun create 12 to 12 (gdb catch syscall, parent process).
  • A root with a trailing comma or a comment, bun pm trust q twice: the script runs 1 time and the trust is recorded. On main it runs 2 times and nothing is recorded.
  • bun pm diff --json on two fixtures that parse: byte-identical output on both builds (cmp).
  • Source diff: 4 files, +17/-14. Strict parse_utf8 call sites outside src/parsers: 15 to 11. src/parsers, src/install, src/js: 0 lines.

Status: ready for review. CI is green on this head: Buildkite build 129761, all 181 jobs passed. No review thread is open.

The branch is on main 9b4284f (head a90f273, the same tree as f5ac49f). It merges into main 38afee6 with no conflict, and main has not changed the six reads since. On a debug build of this tree, the 20 cases pass. The other cases of bun-create and bun-info pass too. Those of bun-pm-diff and bun-pm pass with a 180 s per-test timeout.

How I reproduced it (release build of main 5866b5f and bun 1.4.2, linux x64, no network):

mkdir app && cd app
# q.tgz is a package whose package.json has "scripts": { "postinstall": "echo ran >> ran.txt" }
printf '{\n "name": "app",\n "dependencies": { "q": "file:./q.tgz" },\n}\n' > package.json
bun install # exit 0, "Blocked 1 postinstall"
bun pm trust q # the script runs, then: error: JSON does not support trailing commas
                 # error: failed to parse package.json: SyntaxError, exit 1, no trust recorded

The same file with a // comment fails in the same way. The other reads fail on the same input:

  • bun pm diff a.tgz b.tgz --json: no postinstall script added note when the package.json of b has a trailing comma.
  • bun pm diff ./a ./b: the folder is read whole and not as bun pm pack takes it.
  • bun pm diff ./pkg 1.0.0 and bun pm diff with no arguments: no package name.
  • bun info with no name: the name of the folder is looked up on the registry.
  • bun create <template> dest: dest/package.json has 0 bytes.

test/cli/install/package-json-comments.test.ts (16 cases) and test/cli/install/bun-create.test.ts (4 cases: a local template and a template from GitHub) run each of these with a trailing comma and with a comment: 0 of 20 pass on main, 20 of 20 pass with this change.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether the swap changes behavior for files that already parsed: parse_utf8 and parse_package_json_utf8 differ only in allow_comments/allow_trailing_commas (JSON_OPTS vs PACKAGE_JSON_OPTS, src/parsers/json.rs:38 and :60), and both return the same empty object for a 0-byte file (json.rs:322 and :473), so the empty-input path is unchanged. The two bun pm diff concerns at pm_diff_command.rs:618 and :1910 were also examined and ruled out as pre-existing fallbacks that the new parser only widens, not alters.

Extended reasoning...

The change swaps seven package.json parse calls in four CLI command files from the strict JSON parser to the comments/trailing-commas-tolerant one and adds a new hermetic test file; it touches no auth, crypto or network-trust surface beyond reading local manifests. Inline findings on the rewrite-with-comments-dropped and parse-after-scripts-ran paths in pm_trusted_command.rs, plus a verified finding that is not being posted, mean a human should still look, so this is not an approval.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs — Users who run bun pm trust on a package.json that contains comments now get the file rewritten with every comment silently deleted; on the base branch the file was left untouched. The lenient parse at src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs:560 accepts the file, then print_json at :654 emits plain JSON and :672-675 overwrites the original in place. No warning names the loss. Fix: preserve the user's file text on rewrite for this command and its siblings that reprint a parsed package.json (parse with guess_indentation, splice only the trustedDependencies edit into the original bytes, or at least print a note: that comments were dropped) rather than reprinting the whole tree.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: a root package.json with // or /* */ comments, reached through bun pm trust <pkg> or bun pm trust --all. On the base branch parse_utf8 at src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs:560 fails, the command prints failed to parse package.json and crashes at :572, so the file on disk is not modified. After this change parse_package_json_utf8 succeeds, print_json at :654-662 produces comment-free JSON, and pwrite_all at :672 plus ftruncate at :675 replace the file. The user's documentation comments are gone with no message. The author calls this an accepted downside citing #11536, but that issue is about bun add; this change newly extends the destructive rewrite to a population (commented files) that the base branch never wrote to. Sibling writers (bun pm pkg, bun pm version, updatePackageJSONAndInstall) at least pass guess_indentation: true; this site passes ..Default::default() at :658-661, so indentation is lost as well. Remedy: splice the edit into the original text or warn about the dropped comments.

Verification: The trigger is a root package.json containing // or /* */ comments, run through bun pm trust <pkg> or bun pm trust --all. src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs:560 now calls parse_package_json_utf8, so print_json at :654-662 produces comment-free JSON and :672-675 replace the file in place. No warning is printed. On the base branch the file was never rewritten.

  • 🟣 src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs — Users whose package.json is rewritten by one of the lifecycle scripts that bun pm trust just ran, or that no parser accepts, still get the untrusted scripts executed and then error: failed to parse package.json with exit 1 and no trust recorded. The parse at src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs:560 runs after the script loop at :516-524, so a failure at :566-573 cannot undo the side effects. The lenient parser only narrows the population that reaches this path. Fix: parse and validate the root package.json before running any lifecycle script (or re-read and fail before the scripts), so a manifest that cannot be rewritten never has its scripts executed first.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun pm trust <pkg> where the root package.json cannot be parsed at src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs:560 after the scripts ran. Two populations reach it: a file with a syntax error that neither parser accepts (for example ,,), and a postinstall script of the trusted package that itself edits package.json into something unparseable. The script loop at :516-524 completes first; the parse error at :566 prints the log and calls Global::crash() at :572. The user observes the scripts' side effects (files written, network calls) with exit 1 and nothing added to trustedDependencies, and a second run repeats the scripts. This ordering is unchanged from the base branch, which is why it was dismissed, but this PR touches exactly this line and changes which inputs reach the crash, and the referenced PR #41933 is open, not merged. Remedy: parse the root manifest before the script loop so the failure happens with no side effects.

Verification: Pre-existing, acknowledged in the PR description. In src/runtime/cli/pm_trusted_command.rs the script loop drains at :516-524 before the root package.json, unparseable or rewritten by a script, is parsed at :560; on Err Global::crash() fires at :566-573 before any trust is recorded, so the scripts' side effects stand. The base branch has the same ordering, so merging makes nothing worse.

Replies to the two findings outside the diff:

  • bun pm trust rewrites a file that has comments as plain JSON. Yes. That is the cost of accepting the file, and the Downsides section names it. bun add, bun pm pkg set and bun pm version rewrite such a file in the same way and print no note. In bun 1.3, bun pm trust already wrote a file with a trailing comma back without the comma. Keeping comments on a rewrite is bun update removes comments in package.json #11536, and it applies to every command that writes package.json, so it does not belong to one command here.
  • bun pm trust parses the root package.json after the scripts ran. Not changed here. It is listed under "Not changed, and why". Open PR install: make bun pm untrusted, trust, and ls --trusted read trustedDependencies from package.json #41933 reads the root package.json before the scripts in bun pm trust, which is the place for that check.

The three inline threads have replies. 98ed1e7 makes the bun pm trust test block concurrent and keeps the two GitHub template cases in bun-create.test.ts, next to the other GitHub template tests.

LGTM — the second push makes the bun pm trust block concurrent, which resolves the one nit from the earlier pass, and the seven parser swaps are mechanical.

What was reviewed:

  • Compared parse_utf8 and parse_package_json_utf8 in src/parsers/json.rs: they differ only in allow_comments/allow_trailing_commas, and both return an empty object for empty input, so no call site's empty-file or error-path handling changes.
  • Grepped the remaining strict parse_utf8 sites in src/runtime/cli: create_command.rs:2062/2217, pm_view_command.rs:150 and upgrade_command.rs:296 parse registry responses, and pm_diff_normalize.rs:786 parses arbitrary diffed files, so none reads a project package.json.
  • The new tests are hermetic (local Bun.serve registry and TLS GitHub stub), drain pipes via Promise.all, use using/await using, and the bun-create cases follow the file's existing GITHUB_API_DOMAIN pattern with a fresh x_dir per test.
Extended reasoning...

The change swaps seven package.json reads in create_command.rs, pm_diff_command.rs, pm_trusted_command.rs and pm_view_command.rs from the strict JSON parser to the comments-and-trailing-commas variant that bun install and bun pm pack already use, plus 20 new hermetic test cases across two files. It touches no security-sensitive surface: the lenient parser is already applied to the same file by bun install, and the registry-response parsers stay strict. The Rust diff is +10/-8 one-line call-site swaps with identical return types and identical empty-input behavior, the test diff addresses the only prior nit, no CODEOWNER covers the changed paths, and the bug hunt ran dry with no findings.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize package.json with the package parser.

read_dir_tree accepts comments and trailing commas but keeps the original package.json bytes. normalize_json still uses strict parse_utf8, so bun pm diff marks these manifests as not parsed and falls back to raw hunks. A comment-only or trailing-comma-only change can therefore appear as a manifest change, contrary to the default canonical comparison contract. Use parse_package_json_utf8 for package.json paths and keep strict parsing for other .json files.

On the normalize_json finding (pm_diff_normalize.rs:786): not changed in this PR, on purpose.

normalize_json re-prints the file, and the re-print has no comments. With the package.json parser there, a change that is only in a comment gives two identical prints, and bun pm diff then shows formatting only and hides the edit. CSS has that defect today: /* v1 */ to /* v2 */ in a .css file reads as formatting only, while the same edit in a .js file is shown. The test "a comment-only change is not 'formatting only'" in bun-pm-diff.test.ts states the rule for JS.

With the strict parser, a package.json that has comments or a trailing comma shows as not parsed with the raw hunk. The label is wrong for a file that bun install accepts, but no change is hidden. So the order is: first a comment rule for CSS and JSON, then the lenient read. That goes in its own change. The Notes section lists this under "Not changed, and why".

#45812 carries the same two hunks as this PR: bun pm trust and bun create read package.json with comments. This PR should merge first.

One change is necessary when both are in. After #45812, bun pm trust and bun create keep the comments and the trailing commas of the file. The tests of this PR read that file with .json() at 3 sites: expectRecorded and the local template case in package-json-comments.test.ts, and the GitHub template cases in bun-create.test.ts. Those reads throw then. They must compare the text, or parse it with Bun.JSONC.parse. The two branches merge without a conflict, so git does not show this.

…un-create.test.ts

The case for a local template moves out of package-json-comments.test.ts.
It joins the two GitHub template cases as one matrix over both kinds of
template, as the other blocks of bun-create.test.ts do.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline note, I also checked the remaining strict parse_utf8 calls under src/runtime/cli for the same class: the ones left (create_command.rs:1845 and :1993, pm_view_command.rs:152, upgrade_command.rs:297, pm_diff_command.rs:927 and the new parse_entry closure) all parse registry or GitHub responses, and pm_diff_normalize.rs:966 is the exclusion the description names, so no package.json file read is missed. I also compared parse_package_json_utf8 with parse_utf8 in src/parsers/json.rs: both return an empty object for empty input, so the switch changes only the comment and trailing-comma options.

Extended reasoning...

The diff swaps six package.json parses in bun create, bun pm trust, bun pm diff and bun info/pm view from the strict JSON parser to the package.json dialect, splits one pm diff closure so the registry entry stays strict, and adds tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The serial bun pm trust describe from the earlier review is now describe.concurrent. The one open inline finding is a test-placement nit, so the inline comment already signals that a human look is appropriate.
