Fixes #32160

Problem

  • A copy of the own properties of 47 built-in functions onto another function throws TypeError: Attempting to change configurable attribute of unconfigurable property. Node.js does not.
  • Cause: a function in a built-in module gets no prototype. 10 constructors assigned one (src/js/node/events.ts:131), and $toClass put one without DontDelete.
  • Two more. events.ts:140 assigned constructor: TypeError: Attempted to assign to readonly property. after Object.freeze(Object.prototype). :105 read this.__proto__: TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'this._events') after delete Object.prototype.__proto__.

Fix

Background

Downsides

Notes

Two fixes in one PR. The $toClass change serves #32160 and the freeze. The $getPrototypeOf line (events.ts:105, polyfill events.js:23) serves the deleted accessor and can land alone if the first part needs discussion.

Evidence with no tampering (main against Node.js v26.3.0, each fixed here):

When the freeze bites. An assignment to a name that a frozen prototype holds throws in strict code, and a define does not. The assignment of constructor ran when node:events was first evaluated, so the freeze bites only if it runs before that: a CommonJS entry that hardens first, --preload, import(), createRequire, process.getBuiltinModule, or the first use of process.stdout. An entry with static imports of the built-ins is not affected on main.

Proof over the Node.js test suite. Each of the 3,661 files of test/js/node/test/parallel with the change to Object.prototype as a preload:

Preload Node.js passes of those, branch fails of those, main fails
Object.freeze(Object.prototype) 3,416 0 3,331
delete Object.prototype.__proto__ 3,426 5 1,784

The 5 fail in the test harness itself (test/harness.ts:1531 reads .__proto__).

The family in the fuzz report.

What the program does first Status
Object.freeze(Object.prototype) load, and each use that the Node.js suite makes: this PR. An env key named like a member of Object.prototype (spawn, Bun.$.env, process.env): not fixed here
delete Object.prototype.__proto__ this PR
delete of another member (__lookupGetter__, hasOwnProperty) not fixed here. internal/primordials.js is in open #35567
process.binding replaced not fixed here
globalThis.process removed open #40303
a global replaced in a --preload file open #40303 (objects), #44917 and #37987 (timer functions)
delete Promise.withResolvers / Error.isError not fixed here
get / set / writable on Object.prototype no change: prototype pollution, and Node.js fails 21 of 51 modules the same way

The helper.

  • Create: constructEmptyObject(base.prototype ?? Object.prototype), constructor with DontEnum, prototype with DontEnum | DontDelete. These are the attributes of JSC's constructPrototypeObject.
  • Existing object (fourth argument): installed as it is. The helper does not write to it.
  • name: when the argument differs from the name of the declaration, the helper marks the name as reified and modified before the put, so JSC does not replace it and bind reads it.
  • The old code called setMayBePrototype(true) on the Structure of the new object. constructEmptyObject takes that Structure from a cache, so each Object.create(Base.prototype) object shared the flag. The helper does not mark the prototype any more. JSC marks it at its first use.
  • A debug assertion rejects a target that has a prototype already.

Call sites. events.EventEmitter, url.Url, crypto.Certificate, assert.Assert, console.Console, the ReadableState and WritableState of streams, tls.SecureContext, Bun.$.Shell, the Date of node:test mock timers, the default original of mock.fn(). tty.ReadStream calls $toClass when node:tty loads. Its lazy prototype accessor is gone, so process.stdin.constructor is tty.ReadStream. tty.WriteStream keeps its lazy accessor, which is not enumerable now. The first read replaces it with a data property that is writable, not enumerable and not configurable (the lines of #32163).

The guard. bunfig.toml [lint.rules]: no-proto and one no-restricted-syntax selector. bun lint runs on each PR. It reports 11 errors on main and 0 here. It does not cover the 17 files that oxlint.json ignores. None of them has the pattern.

Measurements. Release builds with LTO, main ea6a2c7 against this branch, same build directory. instructions:u through perf_event_open (perf and valgrind are not installed here). The rebase onto 491aaad and the tty.WriteStream lines came after these runs. The lines marked 491aaad are from after them.

  • jsFunctionToClass: 1,349 bytes (main 1,068). Release .text: +256 bytes (81,695,717 against 81,695,461, size -A). File size unchanged.
  • Embedded, release codegen at 491aaad: node/events.js 24,838 bytes (main 24,936), node/tty.js 3,981 (main 4,156), InternalModuleRegistryConstants.bin 2,712,358 (main 2,712,553). The tty.WriteStream lines are 76 of these bytes. Polyfill events.js: 11,423 (main 11,418).
  • Structures after require('node:stream'): 549 (main 546). After require('node:http'): 1,200 (main 1,194). 5 runs each.

  • EventEmitter constructor: 75 instructions, 529 bytes, offset 22 is get_prototype_of (main: 75, 531, get_by_id __proto__).
  • Per construct, useConcurrentJIT=0, 2e6 constructs, 8 interleaved runs. A receiver that has _events already: -34.5 instructions with one class (noise 0.65), -60.7 with 12 classes (noise 0.6). new PassThrough(): -0.7 (noise 5). A subclass whose prototype is Object.create(EventEmitter.prototype): -105.5 (noise 1.0). With useJIT=0: -704, -665, -930, +0.2. The $getPrototypeOf line gives the 12-class and the useJIT=0 gains. The prototype that is no longer marked gives the rest.
  • new EventEmitter(): +0.014 instructions per construct (noise 0.07). emit: +0.003 (noise 0.01). bench/emitter/microbench.mjs p50: single emit -5.5 %, on x 10,000 -0.9 %, base against base 1.5 %, 10 alternating rounds.
  • EventEmitter.prototype: emit 3, addListener 4, on 5, inline capacity 6/6 (main the same). constructor moves from slot 1 to slot 0.
  • Object.create(EventEmitter.prototype) plus 3 property adds, after node:stream loads: 233 instructions per object (main 1,190, control without node:stream 233). new EventEmitter() plus 3 adds: 142 (main 142).
  • At 491aaad, the attributes of prototype, name and prototype.constructor over the 124 constructors that Node.js v26.3.0 exports too, after a read of tty.WriteStream.prototype: 17 differ, in 15 constructors (main 78 in 53). This PR repairs 38 constructors and adds no difference. The 15: 13 native classes (Buffer, fs.Stats, StringDecoder, ...) and child_process.ChildProcess, a class in src/js, have a prototype that is not writable. module is the last one. Before that read, tty.WriteStream differs too, on main and here.
  • node:events ES module export names: 16 (main 17, Node.js 16).
  • Loading node:events: +1,305 objects, +132,500 bytes after GC (main +1,306, +132,674).

Test runs.

  • Release, main ea6a2c7 against branch: the 3,661 files of test/js/node/test/parallel and the 85 of sequential (5 fail on both). 539 bun:test files: each *.test.* under test/js/node (not test/js/node/test), test/js/bun/{shell,console,util,test}, test/js/web/{console,streams}. The results differ for the 3 files with new tests only. 13 more files differed in one parallel run and agree when run alone.
  • Debug with ASAN, at 491aaad: the 5 changed test files fail with src/ at main (54, 2, 1, 3 tests, and the import of toClassForTesting) and pass at HEAD. Before the rebase: 709 Node.js test files of the events, stream, tty, url, assert, console, crypto, zlib, readline, util and mock-timers families and 77 bun:test files on the branch: what fails also fails, or times out, on a debug build of main. One exception: test-runner-mock-timers-scheduler.js asserts that a step takes less than 100 ms. On the debug build of the branch the step takes 94 to 186 ms and the test fails in about half of the runs. It passed 4 of 4 on the debug build of main. The time is between tick() and the then callback, where this change has no code, and release builds of both take 2 ms.
  • BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 over a script that loads each built-in module and uses each $toClass path. tsc -p src/js/tsconfig.json and bun lint, after the rebase too.
  • The subprocess scripts of the new tests print the same under Node.js v26.3.0.

Behavior that changes, in full.

  • prototype is not configurable on the 44 constructors that used $toClass already, and not enumerable on the 7 that assigned one.
  • Url, Certificate, Console, ReadableState and WritableState instances carry their class name in util.inspect, console.log, Bun.inspect and snapshots. A snapshot of a stream changes (_readableState: ReadableState {).
  • assert.deepStrictEqual, util.isDeepStrictEqual, expect().toStrictEqual and Bun.deepEquals(a, b, true) see a Url (and the other four) as different from a plain object with the same keys, as Node.js does.
  • for...in over an emitter and Object.keys(EventEmitter.prototype) do not list constructor.
  • crypto.Cipheriv.name and crypto.Decipheriv.name lose the 2.
  • tty.ReadStream.prototype has its own constructor, and exists from the load of node:tty.
  • Object.keys(tty.WriteStream) is empty (main: prototype). After the first read, tty.WriteStream.prototype is writable, not enumerable and not configurable (main: not writable, enumerable, configurable).
  • mock.fn().prototype has its own constructor.
  • The polyfill in a browser bundle: constructor is not enumerable on EventEmitter.prototype.

Not in this PR.

  • An own prototype for tty.WriteStream. It shares fs.WriteStream.prototype. A lazy accessor installs that object, and the tty methods on it, on the first read of prototype. Until that read the Built-in EventEmitter has an incorrect prototype property descriptor (enumerable/configurable are true) #32160 copy throws. An install when node:tty loads would give the methods to each fs.WriteStream earlier: a piped process.stdout would have hasColors in each program that loads node:tty. node:tty: fix WriteStream prototype, isTTY, and prevent fs.WriteStream prototype contamination #41592 gives tty.WriteStream its own prototype (tty.WriteStream.prototype.isTTY missing #29019).
  • The prototype of a class from napi_define_class is configurable too (NapiClass.cpp). It needs a test in the N-API suite.
  • Bun.SQL (sql.ts), the wrapper of util.deprecate and the mock function of node:test define their prototype with Object.defineProperty: a non-writable one on purpose, the object of the caller, and a mirror of the original.
  • child_process.ChildProcess is a class, so its prototype is not writable. In Node.js it is a function.
  • The other 17 plain assignments onto EventEmitter.prototype (emit, on, ...). Their names are not on Object.prototype. Node.js assigns them the same way.
  • The _events and _maxListeners defaults that Node.js has on EventEmitter.prototype. Neither failure needs them.
  • --disable-proto and --frozen-intrinsics are accepted and ignored.

Earlier work. #32163 changed $toClass for #32160 and got the request to do it there. It is 2,765 commits behind and no longer applies. This PR carries its design onto main. Each change of #32163 has its counterpart here, and the assertions of its two tests hold on this branch. The $getPrototypeOf(this) line is from #35766, which a stale sweep closed.

Overlap. #45234 adds the same $getPrototypeOf declaration at the same place. #40075 replaces Cipheriv and Decipheriv with native classes. #44609 edits the install lines of Console, WritableState and Assert. #35541, #41495, #41592, #29140 and #44609 edit tty.ts: a prototype accessor defined after $toClass throws now, because prototype is not configurable.

Status: ready for review. How to reproduce each failure on main (491aaad), with the result under Node.js v26.3.0:

# 1. The copy from #32160. main: TypeError: Attempting to change configurable attribute of unconfigurable property. node: no error.
bun -e 'const E = require("node:events"); Object.defineProperties(function () {}, Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptors(E))'

# 2. Freeze before node:events loads. main: TypeError: Attempted to assign to readonly property. (at node:events). node: prints "function".
printf 'Object.freeze(Object.prototype);\nconsole.log(typeof require("node:http").createServer);\n' > freeze.cjs && bun freeze.cjs

# 3. The __proto__ accessor deleted. main: TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'this._events'). node: prints "object".
printf 'delete Object.prototype.__proto__;\nconsole.log(typeof new (require("node:stream").PassThrough)());\n' > noproto.cjs && bun noproto.cjs

Each command passes with this branch. The tests are in test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts (54 of them fail on main), test/internal/to-class.test.ts, test/js/node/tty.test.ts, test/js/node/test_runner/node-test.test.ts and test/bundler/bundler_browser.test.ts.

This PR: #46197. It replaces #32163. Each change of #32163 has its counterpart here, its tty.WriteStream lines included, and the assertions of its two tests hold on this branch. A maintainer can close #32163.

Walkthrough

The change adds optional prototype handling to $toClass, updates built-in constructor setup, and replaces direct __proto__ access. It also changes TTY prototype initialization and adds regression coverage for descriptors, prototype copying, and behavior under modified Object.prototype.

Changes

Prototype initialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
$toClass contract and native implementation
src/js/builtins.d.ts, src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, src/js/internal-for-testing.ts, test/internal/to-class.test.ts, bunfig.toml
$toClass accepts an optional prototype, and $getPrototypeOf is declared. The native implementation supports supplied or created prototypes with updated descriptors. Tests cover inheritance, errors, descriptors, and name behavior. Lint rules reject direct __proto__ access and prototype assignments.
Built-in constructor migrations
src/js/builtins/ConsoleObject.ts, src/js/builtins/shell.ts, src/js/internal/streams/*, src/js/internal/test_runner/mock_timers.ts, src/js/node/{assert,crypto,test,tls,url}.ts, test/js/node/test_runner/node-test.test.ts
The listed built-ins use $toClass for prototype setup. MockDate and SecureContext use supplied prototypes. A regression test checks the prototype constructor descriptor created by mock.fn().
EventEmitter prototype compatibility
src/js/node/events.ts, src/node-fallbacks/events.js, test/bundler/bundler_browser.test.ts, test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts
Both EventEmitter implementations use Object.getPrototypeOf and retain their existing prototypes. Tests cover frozen or modified Object.prototype, module loading, event isolation, constructor descriptors, and prototype copying.
TTY prototype initialization
src/js/node/tty.ts, test/js/node/tty.test.ts
ReadStream.prototype is configured eagerly. WriteStream.prototype receives explicit descriptor attributes. Tests cover frozen constructors, method behavior, identity, and copied prototypes.

Explanation

Issue #32160 requires a built-in constructor prototype with the correct writable, non-enumerable, and non-configurable descriptor. jsFunctionToClass now installs these attributes and accepts existing prototype objects. EventEmitter and the affected built-in constructors use this path. The new tests cover descriptor copying, constructor shape, and the EventEmitter regression. The stated tty.WriteStream limitation is outside #32160's required implementation.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It explains the problem, implementation, scope, downsides, exclusions, and extensive verification. It does not use the template headings exactly, but it provides the information required by both template sections.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The $getPrototypeOf(this) changes in src/js/node/events.ts and src/node-fallbacks/events.js repair construction after deleting Object.prototype.__proto__. Their regression tests cover that deleted-accessor case. Issue #32160 concerns the EventEmitter.prototype descriptor and descriptor copying, so this behavior is unrelated to the linked issue.

Resolution

Move the deleted-__proto__ repair and its dedicated tests to a separate linked issue or pull request. Keep the $toClass descriptor changes and the tests that implement issue #32160.

I reviewed this PR and did not find any bugs. Because it changes a JSC binding that manipulates FunctionRareData name-reification flags and alters the observable property attributes of prototype/name/constructor on constructors across a dozen node: modules, a human look at the compat trade-offs (non-configurable prototype, Url { in util.inspect) would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • jsFunctionToClass in src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp: throw scope covers toObject, getIfPropertyExists and toWTFString; the dropped RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION after constructEmptyObject is fine since it cannot throw; jsExecutable() is only reached behind the !isHostFunction() guard; the ASSERT on an existing prototype is debug-only but every caller passes a fresh builtin function.
  • Each $toClass call site (events, url, assert, crypto, tls, streams, console, shell, mock_timers, tty, node:test): the fourth-argument form leaves the existing prototype untouched, so InternalSecureContext.prototype.constructor = SecureContext is still needed and kept; MockDate already gets name: "Date" from the copied Date descriptors, so the rename only reinforces it.
  • tty.ReadStream: removing the lazy accessor is required because prototype is now DontDelete; tty.WriteStream has no $toClass call so its lazy accessor still works, and the new test pins that as the one remaining exception.
  • $getPrototypeOf(this) in EventEmitter: same null/primitive behavior as the old this.__proto__ read and as Node's ObjectGetPrototypeOf(this)._events.
Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites the $toClass host function in src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp (new fourth argument, DontDelete prototype, ReadOnly name, FunctionRareData reified-name flags, dropped setMayBePrototype) and replaces manual Fn.prototype = ... assignments in eleven built-in JS modules, plus adds a $getPrototypeOf intrinsic use in events.ts and the browser polyfill, and two oxlint rules. It touches no injection, auth, or data-exposure surface; the hardening is against prototype-pollution-style tampering of Object.prototype. The tests are extensive (attribute matrix over 38 constructors, frozen/deleted Object.prototype subprocess tests, a dedicated $toClass unit file). Deferring rather than approving because the C++ relies on JSC-internal FunctionRareData semantics I could not verify against WebKit sources in this checkout, and because the PR knowingly changes user-observable compat behavior (non-configurable prototype, Url inspect output, no prototype ESM export) that a maintainer should sign off on.

robobun and others added 3 commits October 21, 2026 20:41
A function in a built-in module has no `prototype` property of its own.
Ten constructors made one by assignment (`Fn.prototype = {}`). That
property is enumerable and configurable, and the object has no
`constructor`. $toClass put `prototype` without DontDelete, so it was
configurable on the 44 constructors that used the helper already. A copy
of the own property descriptors of such a function onto another function
throws (#32160).

$toClass now defines `prototype` as writable, not enumerable and not
configurable. It takes an existing prototype object as an optional
fourth argument and does not write to that object. Its `name` argument is
the name of the function: before, JSC replaced it with the name of the
declaration on the first lookup, which the bundler can rename
(crypto.Cipheriv was "Cipheriv2"). The helper no longer marks a Structure
as a prototype in place. That Structure is shared by every empty object
with the same [[Prototype]], and JSC marks a prototype at its first use.

EventEmitter, url.Url, crypto.Certificate, assert.Assert, console.Console,
the ReadableState and WritableState of streams, tls.SecureContext,
Bun.$.Shell, the Date of node:test mock timers and the default original
of mock.fn() call $toClass. tty.ReadStream calls it when node:tty loads
and has no lazy `prototype` accessor any more.

node:events assigned `constructor` onto its hand-made prototype. That
assignment throws once a program has frozen Object.prototype, so no
module that needs node:events loaded after the freeze. The EventEmitter
constructor read `this.__proto__`, an accessor that a program can delete,
and each stream constructor threw after that. It reads the prototype with
$getPrototypeOf now.

The browser polyfill of node:events keeps the prototype that its function
has, and reads the prototype with Object.getPrototypeOf.

`bun lint` rejects `Fn.prototype = ...` and `.__proto__` in src/js.
…ion's

The accessor that installs the prototype of fs.WriteStream on the first
read is not enumerable now. The data property that replaces it is
writable, not enumerable and not configurable.

The test that loads each built-in module after the freeze has three
children, and no timeout of its own. The frozen tty.ReadStream test
checks the methods of the prototype.

The two review findings are addressed in b849786. The threads have the details.

This push also does two more things:

On the scope check: the $getPrototypeOf(this) line stays in this PR for now. The freeze and the deleted __proto__ accessor come from one report: a program hardens Object.prototype before node:events loads. Both failures are in the EventEmitter setup in events.ts, and the lint rules in this PR guard both patterns. The line is separable. If a maintainer prefers two PRs, I will split it.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

🟡 nit (optional): for a constructor the bundler renamed (crypto.Cipheriv, crypto.Decipheriv), Object.getOwnPropertyNames now lists prototype before name, unlike Node and every other $toClass'd function. When ecmaName differs from the requested name, setHasReifiedName() stops JSC from adding name ahead of the structure's keys, so the order becomes the putDirect order at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2921-2922, which puts prototype first. Fix: put name before prototype in jsFunctionToClass so every target yields ["length", "name", "prototype"] whether or not the name was reified.

Why this was flagged

crypto.ts:470 calls $toClass(Cipheriv, "Cipheriv", LazyTransform) on a declaration the bundler renamed to Cipheriv2, so the branch at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2912-2918 runs and sets hasReifiedName on the function's rare data. JSFunction's special-property enumeration only prepends name when hasReifiedName is false, so for this function the own keys come from the structure in insertion order. src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2921 puts prototype and :2922 puts name afterwards, giving Object.getOwnPropertyNames(crypto.Cipheriv) the order length, prototype, name. Functions whose declared name equals the argument (events.EventEmitter, crypto.Hash) keep length, name, prototype, and Node gives length, name, prototype for every function. On the base branch the renamed functions also listed name before prototype (with the wrong value "Cipheriv2"), so the ordering is a small new inconsistency introduced by the reify path; putting name first makes the structure order match the special-name order in both cases.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: any $toClass call whose requested name differs from the declaration's ecmaName. The helper calls rareData->setHasReifiedName(), so the own-key order falls through to the putDirect order at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2921 (prototype) then :2922 (name). On the base branch the renamed functions enumerated name before prototype. No test in the diff asserts own-key order.

// JSC takes a builtin function's `name` from its declaration on the first lookup, over a direct put, and the bundler can rename the declaration.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: users who console.log a bundler-renamed builtin constructor still see the declaration's name, e.g. [Function: Cipheriv2] for crypto.Cipheriv, while Node prints [Function: Cipheriv]. The new block at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2910-2919 fixes only the name property; Bun's console formatter never reads it. Fix: make every display path agree with the put name, by having JSC__JSValue__getName in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:4898 prefer an own string name data property the way src/jsc/bindings/ErrorStackTrace.cpp:467-481 already does, or by keeping Cipheriv/Decipheriv out of the block in src/js/node/crypto.ts:444 so the bundler does not rename them.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

A program runs console.log(require("node:crypto").Cipheriv) or Bun.inspect(crypto.Cipheriv). The PR description states the bundler renames the block-scoped declaration at src/js/node/crypto.ts:461 to Cipheriv2, so the FunctionExecutable's name() and ecmaName() are Cipheriv2. src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2914-2918 now marks the name reified and src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2923 puts name = "Cipheriv", so the property reads correctly. The console formatter at src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs:3972 calls get_name, which is JSC__JSValue__getName at src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:4888-4898, which uses JSC::getCalculatedDisplayName; that reads the displayName property and the executable name, not the name property. So the output stays [Function: Cipheriv2] after merging, as on the base branch; Node prints [Function: Cipheriv]. No safeguard covers this: the new test in test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts only asserts the name descriptor.

Verification: pre-existing. A program inspects a builtin constructor whose declaration the bundler renamed (crypto.Cipheriv). The new block at src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp:2910-2923 only puts the own name property. JSC__JSValue__getName uses JSC::getCalculatedDisplayName (bindings.cpp:4898), which never reads the own name property. The base branch prints the same thing by the same route.
