crypto: Hash, Hmac, Cipheriv, Decipheriv as single native classes; drop LazyTransform - #40075

Conversation
…per around a native handle createHash()/createHmac() returned a JS object (function-style ctor in crypto.ts, prototype chained to LazyTransform) whose methods forwarded to a separate native JSHash/JSHmac cell stored under a kHandle symbol. Make JSHash/JSHmac the user-facing classes themselves: their prototypes now extend the JS LazyTransform.prototype, the constructors are callable without `new` and honor new.target, and update/digest/copy/_transform/_flush are host functions on the prototype. The digest/HMAC context lives on the one cell. Observable shape matches Node (instanceof Transform, enumerable prototype methods, copy() returns a base Hash, Hash(existingHash) rejected, stream use, digest-after-stream). Two intentional differences from before: `_options` is only an own property when options were actually passed, and calling a prototype method on a foreign `this` throws ERR_INVALID_THIS (still a TypeError). One object per hash instead of two (200k retained sha256 hashes: 100 MB -> 88 MB RSS); createHmac().update().digest() ~8% faster, createHash paths within noise.

I re-reviewed after 44b8af9 and didn't find any new bugs — both earlier findings (the non-monotonic m_finalized in hashDigest and the stale kHandle lookup in 28024.test.ts) are fixed as described. Given this is a ~500-line C++ rewrite of the Hash/Hmac class architecture with intentional observable differences (_options own-property, ERR_INVALID_THIS, dropped Symbol.toStringTag), a human look is still warranted.

Overview
This PR collapses the two-object crypto.Hash/Hmac implementation (JS wrapper + native handle under kHandle) into a single native JSHash/JSHmac cell whose prototype chains directly to the JS LazyTransform.prototype. The JS wrapper functions in src/js/node/crypto.ts are deleted (~60 lines), and JSHash.cpp/JSHmac.cpp gain copy, _transform, _flush prototype methods plus call-without-new constructor semantics. Three test files are updated: crypto-lazyhash.test.ts gains extensive class-shape tests, and both crypto-invalid-this.test.ts and 28024.test.ts drop the removed kHandle symbol lookup.
Security risks
Low. The actual EVP/HMAC crypto operations (digestInit/digestUpdate/digestFinal/HMAC_*) are unchanged from main — this refactors the JS-facing class shell around them. The update/digest core logic is byte-identical to before, just extracted into static helpers. No new user-controlled data reaches OpenSSL that didn't before.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is a substantive C++ refactor of a hot-path Node compat API with several intentional behavioral changes called out in the PR description, new host functions that call back into user JS mid-method (_flush → this.push → arbitrary getter/proxy), and a novel pattern of a native prototype's [[Prototype]] being a JS module's export resolved during lazy class structure init. The two bugs found on the first pass (a real finalization-invariant break and a CI-red missed test file) confirm this needed close reading.
Other factors
- Both prior
claude[bot]findings were addressed in 44b8af9 with a covering test for the_flush-after-digestcase. - All three CodeRabbit threads are resolved (one withdrawn as invalid, two applied).
- CI build #103516 for the head commit is still in progress at time of review.
- The PR description documents an extensive Node-parity check and benchmark; test coverage for the new shape (prototype chain, subclassing, stream mode,
copy(), callable-without-new) is thorough. REVIEW.mdflags Node-compat and JSC class changes as needing careful review; the removal ofSymbol.toStringTagand the_options-only-when-passed change are user-observable and should be sanity-checked by a maintainer even though they're documented as intentional.
No-Verification-Needed: comment-only change and a test title rename
hashUpdate/hmacUpdate returned a bool that only mirrored "exception pending", and hashDigest/hmacDigest/createHash borrowed the caller's scope. Give each helper its own scope and have every caller check the scope after the call.
…with native lazy state accessors Cipheriv/Decipheriv get the same treatment as Hash/Hmac: JSCipher is the user-facing object (two constructors/prototypes sharing one cell class), update()/final() handle outputEncoding through a StringDecoder stored as this._decoder on first use, setAutoPadding/setAAD/setAuthTag return this, and _transform/_flush are host functions (an error from final() in _flush goes to the callback). All four classes now chain directly to Transform.prototype and carry native _readableState/_writableState accessors that run the Transform constructor on first touch (what internal/streams/lazy_transform did), so lazy_transform.ts is deleted and crypto.ts no longer requires it or string_decoder.

I reviewed the latest revision and didn't find any new issues — the three earlier findings (monotonic m_finalized in hashDigest, the stale kHandle lookup in 28024.test.ts, and the _decoder.end error message) are all addressed in the current head. Given this is a 28-file refactor of four user-facing node:crypto classes into native JSC cells, with documented intentional divergences from Node's object shape, a human pass is still warranted.

Overview
This PR collapses the JS-side Hash/Hmac/Cipheriv/Decipheriv wrappers (which held a native cell under a kHandle symbol and inherited from a JS LazyTransform) into single native JSDestructibleObject cells whose prototypes chain directly to Transform.prototype. It touches 28 files: deletes internal/streams/lazy_transform.ts, guts the wrapper code from src/js/node/crypto.ts, splits JSHash/JSHmac into cell/prototype/constructor files (mirroring the existing JSCipher layout), adds a second LazyClassStructure for Decipheriv, adds native _transform/_flush host functions and native _readableState/_writableState custom accessors (LazyTransform.cpp), and moves the Cipheriv output-encoding StringDecoder logic from JS into encodeCipherOutput. Tests are updated to call prototype methods directly and a comprehensive class-shape suite is added.
Security risks
This is node:crypto. The core hashing/HMAC/cipher primitives (m_ctx.digestUpdate, digestFinal, ctx.update, auth-tag handling) are unchanged — the diff is structural, moving JS glue into C++ host functions with the same argument validation order. The one memory-adjacent change I checked closely: hmacDigest now sets mdBuffer.len = 0 when !m_ctx, so the (previously unreachable in practice) branch can't encode uninitialized stack bytes. encodeCipherOutput reads outputView->vector()/byteLength() after the toWTFString on outputEncodingValue, but output is the Buffer just returned by cipherUpdate/cipherFinal (not user-supplied), so a hostile toString on the encoding argument can't detach it. No new untrusted-length arithmetic; getArrayBufferOrView/validateString guards are preserved.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is production-critical, security-sensitive, and changes user-observable behavior (prototype chain, own-property set, error messages/codes on invalid this). The PR description documents the intentional divergences from Node, but whether those trade-offs are acceptable (e.g., _options only present when passed, no LazyTransform.prototype hop) is a maintainer call. The C++ is well-structured and follows the repo's JSC-binding conventions, but the surface area — four classes × constructor/prototype/stream-hooks × exception paths — is large enough that a second pair of eyes on the exception-scope discipline and the profiledCall-into-user-JS sites (push, callback, the Transform constructor) is worthwhile.
Other factors
Three earlier automated findings on this PR (mine) were all fixed and have regression tests: the m_finalized monotonicity fix has a dedicated test in crypto-lazyhash.test.ts, and 28024.test.ts was rewritten. CodeRabbit's structural concerns (RELEASE_ASSERT on the Transform lookup) were also addressed. The PR claims a full pass of test/js/node/test/parallel/test-crypto-*.js under BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1, which is the right verification for this kind of change. CI build #103724 on the current head was still in progress at review time.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I re-reviewed after the latest fixes and found no further issues; CI is green on 7d95885. This is a large restructuring of the native node:crypto class bindings with intentional observable-shape changes, so a human sign-off is still warranted.
Checked this pass: the monotonic m_finalized fix in hashDigest (all three sites) and its new test; jsCipherFlush's exception-clear → callback(err) path and tryClearException handling; encodeCipherOutput's decoder creation, encoding-mismatch, and user-replaced-_decoder fallback (both method names now correct); the split Cipheriv/Decipheriv prototype tables (getAuthTag on Cipheriv only, setAuthTag on Decipheriv only) and callCipher dispatching via jsCallee(); transformConstructor's RELEASE_ASSERT and the lazy-state getter's re-read of the own property after Transform.call.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR collapses the two-object (JS wrapper + native kHandle) implementation of Hash, Hmac, Cipheriv, and Decipheriv into single native JSDestructibleObject cells that are directly the user-facing instances. It splits each class into cell/prototype/constructor files, chains the prototypes to Transform.prototype, reimplements LazyTransform as a pair of native custom accessors, moves the cipher output-encoding StringDecoder logic into C++, and adds _transform/_flush host functions. src/js/internal/streams/lazy_transform.ts is deleted and src/js/node/crypto.ts loses ~160 lines of wrapper code. 28 files, ~1000 lines of net C++ change plus substantial test additions.
Security risks
This is node:crypto. The core cryptographic operations (ncrypto EVP calls, key handling, AAD/auth-tag paths) are unchanged — the diff is about how the JS objects wrap them, not the crypto itself. The riskier surfaces are the new user-JS re-entry points: _flush catching and clearing exceptions from cipherFinal, the this._decoder lookup that can hit user-provided objects, the this.push / callback calls, and the lazy Transform.call(this, this._options) accessor which runs arbitrary JS from a getter. All of these have RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION after every JS-visible call and use dynamicDowncast for receiver validation, and the author reports running the suite under BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. No new untrusted-input parsing was introduced.
Level of scrutiny
High. Beyond being crypto, this changes the public class shape in ways the PR explicitly documents as intentional divergences from Node (no LazyTransform.prototype hop, _options/_decoder only present when set, different error class on foreign this). Those are Node-compat design calls that a maintainer should ratify. The C++ is well-structured and heavily tested (120 test-crypto-* parallel tests plus new shape tests), and CI is green, but the surface area and the observable-behavior changes put this outside what should be auto-approved.
Other factors
Three prior automated findings on this PR were all addressed (the _flush-un-finalizes-hash regression, the stale kHandle regression test, and the _decoder.end error-message nit). CodeRabbit's threads are all resolved. robobun reports Build #103724 green on the head commit. No outstanding human review comments. Given all findings are closed and nothing new surfaced, deferring with a summary rather than staying silent so the human reviewer can see what the automated passes covered.

Instead of CustomAccessor, I think we can use CustomValue and then it will reassign it instead of adding an extra getter/setter.

@Jarred-Sumner re CustomValue — I tried it; two findings: On the prototype it can't work. For a It does work as a static property of the instance classes — The cost is that they are then own properties before the object is ever streamed, so own-property reflection materializes the stream state: const h = crypto.createHash("sha256");
Object.getOwnPropertyNames(h) // ["_readableState", "_writableState"] (today: [], Node: ["_options"])
console.log(h) // constructs ReadableState + WritableState + _events and prints ~150 lines
// (today: `Hash {}` and allocates nothing; Node: `Hash { _options: undefined, ... }`)Same for Happy to push the CustomValue version if you prefer it with that trade-off — your call. |

I reviewed this round and found no new issues — the earlier findings (monotonic m_finalized, the stale kHandle regression test, the _decoder.end message, the transformConstructor null guard) are all addressed in the current diff. Given the scope (four node:crypto classes reworked as native JSC cells with a new prototype chain, intentional Node-compat deviations called out in the description) and the open CustomValue-vs-CustomAccessor question awaiting a maintainer call, a human sign-off is still warranted.
Checked this pass: exception-scope discipline in the new _transform/_flush/encodeCipherOutput paths (each JS-entering call is followed by RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION or tryClearException); hmacDigest now zeroes mdBuffer.len when m_ctx is already reset so no uninitialized stack bytes are encoded; the LazyTransform custom setter uses putDirect on the receiver so the accessor self-shadows on first write; InternalStreamsLazyTransform was removed from the module registry along with the deleted lazy_transform.ts.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR collapses the JS Hash/Hmac/Cipheriv/Decipheriv wrappers (which forwarded to a native cell under a kHandle symbol) into single native JSDestructibleObject cells whose prototypes chain directly to Transform.prototype. internal/streams/lazy_transform.ts is deleted and reimplemented as a pair of CustomAccessor getters/setters (LazyTransform.cpp) on each of the four prototypes. update/digest/copy/final/setAAD/setAuthTag/setAutoPadding and the _transform/_flush stream hooks are now host functions; cipher output-encoding runs a JSStringDecoder stored as this._decoder. 28 files, roughly half new C++ (constructors/prototypes split into their own files) and half moved/restructured code.
Security risks
node:crypto is security-adjacent. The cipher/hash primitives themselves (BoringSSL calls, key handling, tag validation) are unchanged — the diff moves argument marshalling and stream plumbing from JS into C++. New surface worth a maintainer's eye: the _flush path clears and re-routes exceptions from cipherFinal into the callback (tryClearException), and encodeCipherOutput reads this._decoder via a full get() (user-observable). I did not find memory-safety issues: every dynamicDowncast on thisValue is null-checked, MarkedArgumentBuffer is used for accumulated JSValues, and no raw pointers are held across calls that can re-enter JS.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is a structural rework of four public node:crypto classes with documented, intentional deviations from Node's observable shape (no LazyTransform.prototype hop, _options/_decoder only present when set, ERR_INVALID_THIS instead of a kHandle-undefined TypeError). Those trade-offs, and the CustomValue-vs-CustomAccessor placement the author has explicitly left to a maintainer, are design calls that should be signed off by a human.
Other factors
All prior automated findings on this PR (mine and CodeRabbit's) are resolved and reflected in the current diff. Test coverage is thorough (class-shape probes for all four constructors, stream mode, split-UTF-8 decoder state, _flush-after-digest monotonicity, subclassing, error codes). The author reports the full test-crypto-* parallel suite passes under BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. The one open thread is the author's reply to a maintainer asking whether to switch the lazy-state accessors to CustomValue on the instance class — that's pending a response and may change the implementation.
…eusing the finalized context (#42208) ### Problem - `createHash("sha3-*")`: `hash.update()` after `hash.end()` never returns. The thread spins in `bssl::BORINGSSL_keccak_absorb` ← `EVP_DigestUpdate` ← `Bun::jsHashProtoFuncUpdate`. A `copy()` made after `end()` hangs on use. - Cause: `Hash.prototype._flush` calls `digest(null, false)`, so `jsHashProtoFuncDigest` (`src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/JSHash.cpp:225`) runs `EVP_DigestFinal_ex` but leaves `m_finalized` clear. `update()` and `copy()` check only that and reuse the cleansed `EVP_MD_CTX`. Zeroed keccak state has `rate_bytes == 0`, so the absorb loop never advances. - The reverse order, `digest()` then `end()`, emitted `ERR_CRYPTO_HASH_FINALIZED` from `_flush`. Node pushes the cached digest. ### Fix - `digest()` frees the native state once the result is cached in `m_digest`. Later calls read it. The `_flush` call (`finalized == false`) skips the finalized check and never clears `m_finalized`, as in Node. - `update()` with no native state throws `ERR_CRYPTO_HASH_UPDATE_FAILED` like Node (zero-length input still succeeds, as in OpenSSL). `copy()` also checks `m_digest` and throws `ERR_CRYPTO_HASH_FINALIZED`. - Deliberate difference: Node's `copy()` after `end()` returns a `Hash` whose methods all throw. Bun throws at `copy()`. - Verified: `test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js` (two new cases, both fail on 1.4.3), all of `test/js/node/crypto/`, the `test-crypto-hash*` Node tests. Self-reviewed: 3 concerns, 3 addressed. ### Background - `crypto.Hash` is a JS `LazyTransform` over a native `JSHash` cell holding a BoringSSL `EVP_MD_CTX` (md5, sha1/2/3) or an `ExternZigHash` handle (blake2, shake). - `m_finalized` is the JS-visible "Digest already called" bit. Node's `_flush` bypasses it: `end()` works after `digest()`, one `digest()` works after `end()` (nodejs/node#28245). - BoringSSL's `EVP_DigestFinal_ex` zeroes the context. OpenSSL 3 flags it `FINALISED` and fails the next non-empty update, hence Node's error code. <details><summary>Notes</summary> Repro: ```js import crypto from "node:crypto"; const h = crypto.createHash("sha3-256"); // also sha3-224 / sha3-384 / sha3-512 h.update("abc"); h.end(); h.update("late"); // never returned before this change ``` Deterministic on 1.4.2, 1.4.3 and main, release and ASAN builds. `h.copy().update()`, `h.copy().digest()` and even `h.update("")` after `end()` spin too (the loop is `while (in_len >= ctx->rate_bytes)` with both zero). On sha256, `h.copy().digest("hex")` after `end()` returned 64 zeros. The "digest again" row changes for blake2b512/shake128 because the `ExternZigHash` branch returned the cached digest before reaching the `m_finalized` assignment. Both branches now share one tail. `Hmac` is not touched: `JSHmac::digest` already resets its context and sets `m_finalized` even from `_flush`. #35991 (stream `write()` after a direct `digest()`, the `_transform` path) and #40075 (Hash/Hmac as single native classes) touch the same file. #40075 will conflict in `jsHashProtoFuncDigest` and needs to keep the context release on rebase; its `_flush() after digest()` test expects the behaviour this PR implements. </details> <!-- robobun:evidence:begin --> --- **[human-review]** gate passed · iteration 2 · 2 files touched <details><summary>fails on main (without fix)</summary> ```console ASAN without fix: 2 FAILED $ BUN_DEBUG_QUIET_LOGS=1 bun scripts/build.ts --profile=debug --quiet test "--reporter=junit" "--reporter-outfile=/tmp/pr_gate.xml" test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js bun test v1.4.3 (5f55496) test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js: (pass) crypto.randomBytes should return a Buffer [4.21ms] (pass) crypto.randomInt should return a number [2.20ms] (pass) crypto.randomInt with no arguments [3.82ms] (pass) crypto.randomInt with one argument [2.23ms] (pass) crypto.randomInt with a callback [38.17ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-md5 - "Hello World" [7.56ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-md5 - "Hello World" -> binary [4.37ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-ripemd160 - "Hello World" [0.81ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-ripemd160 - "Hello World" -> binary [0.80ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha1 - "Hello World" [8.11ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha1 - "Hello World" -> binary [1.13ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha1-2 - "Hello World" [0.58ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha1-2 - "Hello World" -> binary [0.67ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha224 - "Hello World" [2.30ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha224 - "Hello World" -> binary [0.80ms] (pass) createHash > rsa-sha256 - "Hello World" [1.56ms] (pass) createH ... What does this PR do?
createHash()/createHmac()/createCipheriv()/createDecipheriv()used to return a JS object — a function-style constructor insrc/js/node/crypto.ts,$toClass'd ontoLazyTransform— whose methods forwarded to a separate nativeJSHash/JSHmac/JSCiphercell stored under akHandlesymbol. Every instance was two GC objects and every method call went JS method →this[kHandle]→ native method. This makes the native cells the user-facing classes:
Hash,Hmac,Cipheriv,DecipherivareInternalFunctionconstructors (callable withoutnew, honornew.target) whose prototypes chain directly to the JSTransform.prototype.update/digest/copy,update/final/setAutoPadding/setAAD/getAuthTag/setAuthTag, and the stream hooks_transform/_flushare host functions on those prototypes (enumerable, as in Node).Cipheriv/Decipherivshare one cell class with two constructors/prototypes.internal/streams/lazy_transformdid —_readableState/_writableStateaccessors that run theTransformconstructor only when the object is first used as a stream — is now two native custom accessors on each of the four prototypes (LazyTransform.h/.cpp).lazy_transform.tsis deleted;crypto.tsno longer requires it orstring_decoder.Cipheriv/Decipherivupdate(data, inEnc, outEnc)/final(outEnc)handle the output encoding natively through aStringDecoderstored asthis._decoderon first use (same object Node keeps there, so split multi-byte characters still decode across calls); the setters returnthis; an error fromfinal()inside_flushis delivered to the callback.crypto.tsshrinks to export assembly for these; thekHandlewrappers are gone.Checked against Node and the previous release with shape probes:
instanceof Transform, prototype key lists, constructorname/length(Hash2,Hmac3,Cipheriv/Decipheriv4),update()/setters returnthis,hash.copy()returns a baseHashand rejects a finalized hash, new Hash(otherHash)rejected,crypto.Hash/Hmacremain thedeprecate()wrappers, subclassing, stream mode incl.digest()after the stream ends, GCMsetAAD/getAuthTag/setAuthTag,ERR_INTERNAL_ASSERTIONon changing output encoding,ERR_UNKNOWN_ENCODING,ERR_OSSL_WRONG_FINAL_BLOCK_LENGTHsurfacing as a stream'error'.Intentional observable differences:
_options(and_decoderfor ciphers) are only own properties once actually set —createHash("sha256")carries no own properties, so the common path allocates no property storage. Node always has_options: undefined/_decoder: null.Hash.prototype → Transform.prototype(Node has an internalLazyTransform.prototypehop in between), and the_readableState/_writableStatelazy accessors live onHash.prototypeetc.thisthrowsERR_INVALID_THIS/ the standard "Can only call X on instances of X"TypeErrorinstead of aTypeErrorfromthis[kHandle]being undefined.Cipheriv.nameis now"Cipheriv"(was"Cipheriv2"from a bundler rename). How did you verify your code works?
