Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two re-entrancy paths in reject_oversized_request_body: a nested on_abort triggered from another request's error() handler re-runs revoke_response_writer, but revoke_response only stores (state Aborted, res = None) and finalize is a no-op once the sink is no longer Writing, so the sink is not torn down twice; and the natively piped ByteStream ref is released exactly once because notify_revoked_writer take()s the slot before deref(), so whichever of the nested or outer call wins the take pays the ref and the other skips it.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewires Bun.serve's response-writer teardown in src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs, src/runtime/webcore/streams.rs and src/runtime/webcore/ByteStream.rs into a revoke-then-notify protocol, collapsing two oversized-body exits into one and reordering on_abort so a req.signal listener cannot reach a freed uWS response; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface but is raw-pointer FFI lifecycle code. The posted findings (a behavior change that resets a fully-produced response, plus a serial-test-file nit) and the unposted verified finding mean a human must still look, so this note only records the re-entrancy and ref-balance paths that were examined and ruled out.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
I reviewed the latest push (58c1a8b, the new Revoked sink state) and found no bugs; given that this PR rewires response teardown across the sink, ByteStream pipe and uWS with raw-pointer dispatch, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed on this push:
- The revoke-to-notify window in src/runtime/webcore/streams.rs:
is_done()coversRevoked, sofinalize(),on_auto_flush()andflush_no_wait()stay inert on a revoked sink; a parkedwrite()reuses the oneWritablePendingpromise andnotify_revoked()setsAbortedbeforeflush_promise()settles it, so a re-entrant write cannot park again. - Native sources (
ByteStream/FileReader) getBackpressure(0)in that window and are released bysource.abort()at the end ofnotify_revoked(). - The sink slot in RequestContext is only cleared by
deinit/handle_resolve_stream, andreject_oversized_request_bodyassertspin_count > 0, so the secondrevoke_response_writer()after the body error cannot see a freed sink.
Extended reasoning...
The PR replaces two inlined over-limit exits in src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs with one cold exit that revokes the response body writer, fails the request body, closes the response by phase (413 or connection/stream reset), fires req.signal and then notifies the producer; the newest commit adds an HTTPServerWritableState::Revoked state so writes between revoke and notify park on a promise instead of returning 0. It touches the maxRequestBodySize enforcement boundary (a resource-limit/DoS surface) and unsafe raw-pointer dispatch in sink teardown, with no injection or auth surface. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings on this push, and the new state machine checks out, but the change is ~1,600 lines across the HTTP server, sink and ByteStream with an earlier inline thread of mine on the reset-a-complete-response design still open (author replied, not independently resolved), so this is not a candidate for bot-only approval.
Still open from earlier reviews (1):
- Unresolved: 1 minor or pre-existing.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I re-checked the two points from the previous round against 302a7ae: write_after_done now copies source out before the cancel and reads nothing from the sink afterward (matching notify_revoked), and the new "a direct stream that waits on a write" row pins cancel:<abort reason> for a producer parked on the sink, so the cancel is no longer optional in the matrix. Nothing further found in the revoke/notify ordering of reject_oversized_request_body and on_abort.
Extended reasoning...
The latest push touches only the revoked-sink cancel in src/runtime/webcore/streams.rs and adds one test row; the remaining diff is the multi-commit teardown rework across RequestContext.rs, streams.rs and ByteStream.rs already reviewed in earlier runs. No security-sensitive surface beyond request-size limit enforcement, which keeps the pre-existing 413 path. The one confirmed finding this run is a nit about an unreachable branch, and the prior round's open items are addressed by 302a7ae, so this note records what was re-verified rather than new concerns.

@coderabbitai review The branch was rebuilt: it is now #46074 plus one commit ( |
|
…6270) ### What does this PR do? Hardening follow-up to #46021. It fixes regressions from #46021 and #44618 that were never released, includes more of the open pull requests that fix a crash, and fixes a few crashes that had no pull request. #### Regressions fixed (none was released) - `spyOn(Bun, "$")`, and the same for `"sql"`, `"postgres"` and `"SQL"`, threw "does not support accessor properties yet". - Async `fs.read`, `fs.write` and `zlib.brotliCompress` on a view over a `WebAssembly.Memory` could lose data or copy far more than they needed. - `node:vm` with `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY`: `this` in host accessors, prototype handling, `util.types.isProxy`, `Bun.deepEquals`, `assert.deepEqual` and `console.log` of a context. - `zlib` `stream.flush()` threw for arguments it used to accept, and streams had a new enumerable property. - `Bun.Transpiler` `exports.replace` with the name `"default"`. - `process.env.X = 3000` could store the number once the function was JIT-compiled. - `node:sqlite` and `bun:sqlite` could lose rows at exit. - Dev server: stylesheets shared between pages after a build error. - Shell `cp` of a file onto itself exited 1. - `error.stack`: the frame of `require()` reads `at anonymous (unknown)` again. - `import * as process from "process"` followed by `process.on(...)` threw at load. The EventEmitter methods that the module exports now act on `process`. - `delete res.statusCode; res.end()` in a `node:http` handler threw. It sends 200, as in Node. (from #46128) - `node:tls`, `node:https` and `node:http2`: connection teardown and write callbacks behave as in 1.4.3 and Node again. #### Crash fixes Bundler, parser and CSS: #42286, #46092, #46097, #46177, #46239, #36334, #43024, #40769. `bun test`, `--hot` and `--watch`: #30776, #38206, #38974. Shell: #43183, #37743, #46168, #46207, #34900. `node:http`, `node:http2`, `Bun.serve`, streams: #43449, #45380, #44457, #42197, #42485, #38082, #38124, #46074, #45999, #46045. `node:vm`, native addons, workers: #46129, #46198, #45615, #33412, #38031. Dev server: #42790, #42850, #39488. Other: #35991, #38030, #38586, #40526, #41830, #46029, #46078, #46114, and the bug of #42215. #### Behavior changes - `crypto.randomFill(view, cb)` reports `ERR_CRYPTO_OPERATION_FAILED` if it could not fill the view. It used to report success. - A function registered twice on `process` runs twice, as in Node. (#41830) - Under `--hot`, a reload after an uncaught exception cancels the timers that the failed run created. The new run's timers fire, and so do timers and `fs.watchFile` watchers that earlier runs kept on `globalThis`. The reload also resets the exit code to 0. (#38206) - The parent of a Worker no longer gets an `'error'` event for a failed `Bun.serve` request in that Worker. The error is printed, as on the main thread. - `hash.write()` after `digest()` drops the chunk, as in Node. (#35991) - `http2` over TLS with `server.emit("connection", socket)`: `session.socket` is a `TLSSocket` and a `'connection'` listener fires, as in Node. (#38124) - A `slice()` with no type of a body `Blob` has `type === ""`, as in Node. (#46114) - `util.types.isProxy(globalThis)` is false, as in Node. - A write on a `node:net` or `node:tls` socket that is still pending when the connection closes calls back with `ECANCELED`, as in Node. - `HTMLRewriter.on()` throws for a selector that is nested too deeply. - `Bun.Image`: `maxPixels` also bounds PNG metadata, `metadata()` of a GIF reports the size that gets decoded, and a path with a NUL byte throws. (#40526) - `bun build --no-bundle` with the `base64` or `dataurl` loader prints an error. (#36334) - Bundled output for a default-exported function or class expression changes to `var file_default = function name() {}`, as in esbuild. `.name` is unchanged. (#46097) - A Proxy in the prototype chain of a `node:vm` global is allowed. jsdom 30 with `runScripts` needs this. - `bun:sqlite` commits a write that `iterate()` left open when the main thread exits. An explicit `BEGIN` is still rolled back. - When a Worker stops while a native addon's async work is still running, the addon's finalizers run after that work is done, as in Node. - Shell: `mv -n` and `cp -n` don't overwrite, and `cp` reads `R`, `v` and `n` anywhere in a flag group. #### Performance - Ordinary `node:vm` contexts run at the same speed. With `DONT_CONTEXTIFY`, stores to globals and reads of inherited names in a hot loop cost 10 to 20 % more than on `main`. - A `process.env` write costs 20 to 35 % less than after #46021. - An async read into a `WebAssembly.Memory` view looks through the live memories: about 1.5 µs more with one memory. #### Not included - Taken in part, so these should stay open for the rest: #36334, #38974, #39488, #40526, #40769, #42485, #45615, #45999, #46029, #46092, #46114, #46168, #46207, #46239. - Needs a WebKit change: #34655 #39204 #40170 #40253 #41587 #41900 #42699 #42897 #42903 #43084 #43813 #44518 #44949 #45770 #45804 #45827. - #44723 (covered by #46097), #41675, #42753, #38762, #41475, #46016. ### How did you verify your code works? - Every item was reproduced first on release builds of `main`, of its parent and of 1.4.3, and compared with Node v26 where Node has the API. - Every fix has a test that fails on `main` and passes on a debug + ASAN build of this branch, except where that isn't practical (huge inputs, code that only runs on Windows or macOS). - The regressions were checked on grids of calls against the build before #46021 and against 1.4.3. - Bun's own test suites and Node's `test-vm-*`, `test-http2-*` and `test-zlib-*` files for the areas touched.
A chunked request body that crosses the limit now ends the request through the teardown of on_abort, in its order: req.signal aborts, the producer of the response body is cancelled, and reads of the request body reject. The request gets 413 while no status is written, and a reset otherwise. The reason of the abort and of the cancel is a new CommonAbortReason, an AbortError that names the limit. Reads of the body keep their Error. end_request_streaming() returns early when nothing of the request body is left to fail, and revoke_response() is out of line.

🔴 Operators fronting Bun with nginx (proxy_request_buffering off) now get a 502 and a backend marked failed; the base returned 200 with a cut body. Trigger: a chunked upload crosses maxRequestBodySize while a streaming response has written no chunk. refuse_request at RequestContext.rs:403 then sends a RST after the status line but before the header section ends; nginx counts that toward max_fails. Fix: end the header section before the reset whenever a status was written but no body byte went out, e.g. resp.flush_headers(true) when !resp.state().is_http_write_called(), then force_close(). The PR calls this a deferred downside; any client can trigger it. [also at: src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs:1672 - HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 clients that overrun maxRequestBodySize against a streaming handler get a bare RST_STREAM(INTERNAL_ERROR) instead of the 413 nothing prevents. refuse_request picks reset over 413 from flags.has_written_status() at RequestContext.rs:1672, but do_render_stream sets that flag at :2330-2332 while HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 still hold the HEADERS frame back until the first body byte, so no status has reached the client.]
Why this was flagged
A client sends a chunked POST with no Content-Length to a route whose handler returned new Response(readableStream) and whose pull has not written a chunk, and the body crosses maxRequestBodySize; on_buffered_body_chunk at RequestContext.rs:4227 or :4298 calls reject_oversized_request_body, which runs abort and refuse_request (:1670). do_render_stream at :2330-2332 already ran render_metadata when the handler returned, so has_written_status is true and the status line plus headers were flushed, but uWS writes the "\r\n" that ends the header section only at the first body write (packages/bun-uws/src/HttpResponse.h:836). refuse_request takes the else branch at :401-403 and calls resp.force_close(), a SO_LINGER{1,0} RST (src/uws_sys/us_socket_t.rs:34). A proxy reading the upstream sees a status line with an unterminated header section and a reset: a 502 for that client and a failure counted toward max_fails, which with the default max_fails=1 removes the backend from rotation for fail_timeout (10s). On the base branch the same arm ran end_with_payload_too_large -> end_without_body(!MUX), which terminated the headers and the body, so the proxy got a complete 200. The only guard, the 413 branch at :397, runs only when no status was written.
Verification: do_render_stream (src/runtime/server/RequestContext.rs:2330-2332) calls render_metadata() when the handler returns, so has_written_status is true; the header-terminating \r\n is only emitted by write()/internalEnd/endWithoutBody. refuse_request takes the else arm at :401-403: resp.force_close(), an RST. On base, end_without_body(!MUX) wrote the terminating \r\n, so nginx returned 200; now it answers 502 and counts the error toward max_fails.

A producer behind a native pipe hearsAbortError: The operation was aborted., as on a disconnect.Error: Request body exceeded maxRequestBodySize, the error that main gives them.fetch(upstream, { body: req.body, signal: req.signal })now rejects with theAbortError, where main rejected with theError. Withoutsignalit rejects with theError, as on main. A forwarder that readsAbortErroras "the client left" does not log the limit. One thing differs from a client that left. A body that nothing has read yet is failed before step 1, as on main. A first read from inside the teardown then rejects. After a disconnect that read finds an empty body, and

With the plainError, a loop aroundfetch(url, { signal: req.signal })that leaves only onAbortErrorran 200,000 turns and starved the server, and aReadable.toWeb()body was destroyed with a non-abort error.CommonAbortReasonis the enum thatAbortSignalre-creates its reason from, so a signal that JavaScript never touched keeps the reason across a collection.req.signal.addEventListener("abort", () => reader.cancel())returns a rejected promise that nothing catches, and the process exits.while (true) await c.write(chunk)never ends after the limit, as after a disconnect:write()returns 0 (docs/runtime/streams.mdx, docs: cover a 0 return from a direct stream's write(), fix the WebView url option JSDoc #42172). serve-response-in-flight.test.tshas a table of handlers. Each row runs twice: the body crosses the limit, and the client leaves at the same point. The second run must hear what the first heard, with the reason of a client that left. The rows that differ say so (whenTheClientLeaves). The file also covers: producers that run until something stops them, responses with megabytes in flight, requests that feed each other, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, a handler that first readsreq.signalafter a collection, and fixtures in a process of their own for what must not end or crash a process. The two rows where the handler answers with a file expect
