Bump WebKit to the preview of oven-sh/WebKit#762: a native accessor read by an inlined node:vm function gets the realm that holds it - #44518
Conversation
…ts the realm that holds it Pins the preview build of oven-sh/WebKit#762. The DFG and the FTL called a native custom accessor with the realm of the code origin, so a function of a node:vm context that host code inlined handed the context's global object to an accessor of a Bun object. Adds tests for StringDecoder#lastChar, Request#signal, Response#headers, import.meta.env, the buffer.INSPECT_MAX_BYTES setter, and a Bun.serve handler that belongs to a context.

Status How I reproduced it, on bun 1.4.3 and on a debug build of main (linux x64): // bun repro.js -> panic(main thread): Segmentation fault; prints "true" with BUN_JSC_useDFGJIT=0
const vm = require("node:vm");
const read = vm.runInNewContext("(function (request) { return request.signal; })");
let signal;
for (let i = 0; i < 1_000_000; i++) signal = read(new Request("http://a/"));
console.log(signal instanceof AbortSignal);The same shape with The engine fix is oven-sh/WebKit#762. This pull request pins its preview build and adds the tests. The branch has main merged in (the WebKit upgrade of #44615), and the pin is the preview of #762 on top of that WebKit. What is left before it can merge:

WebKit PR #762 is still open. When it merges, WebKit deletes its autobuild-preview-pr-* release. If this pin remains, WebKit prebuilt downloads can return 404. After #762 lands, set WEBKIT_VERSION to its merged main SHA before merging this change; the downloader resolves that SHA as the corresponding autobuild-<sha> release.

Correct, and it is the condition in the description: this pull request does not merge while the pin is a preview tag. oven-sh/WebKit#762 is still open, so there is no merged sha to pin yet. When it merges I set WEBKIT_VERSION to the merge commit, check that its autobuild-<sha> release has all 42 tarballs, and run the tests again on that build. I leave this thread open until then.

@robobun Thanks for clarifying. Your merge condition and validation plan cover the concern. The finding remains pending until you update WEBKIT_VERSION, confirm all 42 tarballs, and rerun the tests.

🔴 Everyone building Bun with prebuilt WebKit (CI ci-build and local bun bd) gets a hard 404 the moment oven-sh/WebKit#762 merges or closes, because the pin is an ephemeral preview release. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 sets WEBKIT_VERSION to autobuild-preview-pr-762-3310106a; GitHub deletes that release when the PR lands (scripts/build/download.ts:320-336 documents exactly this). Fix: before merge, replace the preview tag with the merged oven-sh/WebKit main SHA and confirm the autobuild-<sha> release has a tarball for every os x arch x {musl,android,debug,lto,asan} flavor that prebuiltUrl() can request. The PR text itself says not to merge before the WebKit PR lands; this is that condition made concrete.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: oven-sh/WebKit#762 merges or closes after this PR lands on main. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 pins WEBKIT_VERSION = "autobuild-preview-pr-762-3310106a"; prebuiltUrl() at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:72-73 passes an autobuild- prefixed value through verbatim, so every prebuilt fetch hits https://github.com/oven-sh/WebKit/releases/download/autobuild-preview-pr-762-3310106a/bun-webkit--.tar.gz. scripts/build/download.ts:319-336 states GitHub deletes the preview release when the PR merges or closes, and turns the 404 into "WebKit preview release is gone". On the base branch the pin is the permanent sha fb1167ebf2cb9edc1f6771a2c11771b024693ae0 whose autobuild release persists. After merge, every CI build and every developer bun bd without a local WebKit fails until someone re-pins. The repo's dependency rule (.claude/docs/landing-prs.md:47) forbids merging a pin to an unmerged-PR preview tag; the only safeguard is the author's description note, which does not block a merge.
Verification: Trigger: oven-sh/WebKit#762 merges or closes. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 pins WEBKIT_VERSION = "autobuild-preview-pr-762-3310106a"; prebuiltUrl() at webkit.ts:72-74 passes it through verbatim. scripts/build/download.ts:319-323 states GitHub deletes the preview release when the PR merges or closes, so every build 404s at once. Nothing in the checkout enforces the re-pin before merge.

With two levels of inlining the DFG makes the wrong call by itself, so these two cases run with BUN_JSC_useFTLJIT=0: a getter and the setter.

Pins the preview of oven-sh/WebKit#762 built on top of the WebKit that main now uses.

Read by an inlined function of a context, the getter threw a TypeError without the fix: no Bun accessor is involved.

node:vmfunction that reads a native accessor of a Bun object crashes:panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x18forreq.signal, about 9,300 requests into aBun.servehandler.bytecode/GetByStatus.cpp:359) allows that only when the holder's realm is the same, but for inlined code it compared with the outer function's code block.Fix
test/js/node/vm/vm.test.tsfails 9 of 9 on bun 1.4.3 and passes on a debug build with this pin.Background
node:vmcontext is a realm. Its global is aNodeVMGlobalObject, not theZig::GlobalObjectthat Bun's native accessors read their state from through their first argument.defaultGlobalObject()in each accessor, as Fix a crash when code from a node:vm context reads require.cache or require.extensions #44410 does for two. It leaves the engine making the wrong call and cannot reach accessors with no C++ wrapper.Downsides
bin/jsc.Notes
What the bug reaches. A wider survey of 95 native accessors of host objects, read hot by a function of a context, lists 8 that segfault (
require.cache,require.extensions,Request.signal,Request.body,Response.body,Subprocess.stdout,StringDecoder.lastChar,import.meta.env) and 10 that hand out an object of the context's realm, which the host object then keeps (Request.headers,Response.headers,module.paths,module.children,AbortSignal.reason,Cookie.expires,PerformanceMark.detail,Server.url,Subprocess.exited,CryptoHasher.algorithms). I did not re-run all of it: I reproducedRequest.signal,Request.body,StringDecoder.lastChar,import.meta.envandResponse.headers. #44410 repairs the first two of the list in the accessors themselves. Setters are reached too: a context function that setsbuffer.INSPECT_MAX_BYTEShot writes through the context's global, and the host's value stops following the writes.Why it needs two tiers. The generated getters are
CustomAccessor | DOMAttributewith no DOMJIT snippet, so the DFG calls them throughCallDOMGetter; a plain custom accessor such asimport.meta.envgoes throughCallCustomAccessorGetter, a setter throughCallCustomAccessorSetter. All three passglobalObjectFor(origin). With one level of inlining the wrong call needs the FTL, because the status has to come from the inline cache in the outer function's DFG code. With two levels the DFG alone does it (BUN_JSC_useFTLJIT=0still fails).How it was found. By fuzzing, with a survey of native accessors after the first crash. No user has reported it.
The tests. Nine subprocesses with
BUN_JSC_useConcurrentJIT=0. Seven use one level of inlining andBUN_JSC_thresholdForFTLOptimizeAfterWarmUp=8000(64000 by default), 3,000 iterations each. On bun 1.4.3 their first wrong iteration is between 400 and 800 with these settings (2,220 to 5,800 with the default threshold). The DFG threshold stays at its default: with every threshold at 20 theBun.servecase did not reproduce in 1,000 requests. The server case drives the handler throughserver.fetch()and then answers 4 requests over a socket. Two cases use two levels of inlining andBUN_JSC_useFTLJIT=0, 6,000 iterations each: on 1.4.3 the DFG alone goes wrong at about iteration 2,070.Results on 1.4.3 (
USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1):StringDecoder#lastChar,Request#signal,import.meta.envand theBun.servehandler exit 139 withSIGSEGV;Response#headersprintsfalse; theINSPECT_MAX_BYTESsetter leaves 728 where 3000 was written last; the two DFG-only cases printfalseand leave 1493 where 6000 was written last;RegExp.$1, an accessor of JavaScriptCore itself, throwsTypeError: RegExp.$N getters require RegExp constructor as |this|.Results on a debug build of main at 3f1765a, which pins WebKit 0c06faadf6 (the upstream sync of #44615, without the fix): the eight cases other than
RegExp.$1, which I added later, all fail at the same points.import.meta.env,Request#signaland theBun.servehandler stop atASSERTION FAILED: !source || is<Target>(*source), the twoResponse#headerscases atASSERTION FAILED: m_ptr,StringDecoder#lastCharcrashes, and the setter cases leave 728 and 1493.On a debug build of this branch all nine pass with the default timeout, 0.6 to 1.7 s each with the nine running at once. The whole of
test/js/node/vm/vm.test.tspasses there (317 pass, 4 skip), and so doestest/js/bun/jsc/webkit-upgrade-dbdca7545d.test.ts.The pin.
autobuild-preview-pr-762-3a5c485eis the build of oven-sh/WebKit#762 with WebKit main merged in. It is main's WebKit (0c06faadf6) plus two later commits of WebKit main and the fix.Measured in the engine (JSCOnly Release builds of the pin with and without the change; details in oven-sh/WebKit#762):
JSTests/stress/custom-accessor-realm-of-inlined-code-origin.jsfails in 13 of the 17defaultRunconfigurations without the change and passes in 17 with it. The four existing realm tests pass in all 17 both ways.CallCustomAccessorGetterand 2CallDOMGetternodes before and after.size, -O3, assertions off), +672 with the$vmtest accessor. The +1,056 above is the same change in the shipped LTO configuration.sizeof(GetByVariant)andsizeof(PutByVariant)stay 64 and 72 bytes in a release build (static_asserts in the change); the holder-realm field exists only with assertions on.valgrindandperfare not installed where I measured), a symbol-level size attribution (bloatyis not installed), and the size of a bun release binary built on each pin. It links the libraries whosejscis compared above.A way out on a released build.
BUN_JSC_usePolyvariantDevirtualization=0stops the compiler from reading inline caches of optimized code, which is the path with the wrong comparison. On 1.4.3 it gives the right answer forStringDecoder#lastChar,Request#signal,Response#headersand the two-level case. I did not measure what it costs.#44410. It changes the
require.cacheandrequire.extensionsgetters to look their global up, which repairs those two accessors on the current engine. On a debug build of this branch, with no change to those getters, a context function that reads them hot gets the host's objects (truefor both, where 1.4.3 segfaults). So with this change #44410 is no longer needed for correctness. Whether to keep it as hardening is a maintainer's call.Upstream. WebKit main has the same two comparisons, so the defect is upstream's too. The engine patch is not filed there.
Left alone.
CallDOM, the node for DOMJIT function calls, also passes the realm of the code origin and has no guard. Bun's only DOMJIT function,performance.now(), does not read the realm it is given, so nothing goes wrong today. The uncheckedZig::GlobalObjectcasts in the accessors stay as they are: with the engine fixed they receive the realm they expect.
