Problem

  • Since 1.3.10, a "sideEffects": false barrel skips export { b } from "./b.js" even with --ignore-dce-annotations. Bun 1.3.9 ran b.js.
  • bun test --changed misses a file behind such a re-export (no test files are affected). The runtime loads it.
  • apply_barrel_optimization_impl (src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs:118) reads only the barrel's sideEffects verdict.

Fix

  • The automatic gate requires ignore_dce_annotations to be off, as the linker does. BundleV2::scan_only turns the pass off for the --changed scan.
  • --changed walks from every copy of a changed file: a page script puts a file in the graph twice.
  • Verified: bundler_barrel.test.ts (7 new cases) and test-changed.test.ts (2). 7 of the 9 fail without the fix.
  • Self-reviewed: 3 concerns raised, 3 addressed.

Background

  • A barrel is an index file that only re-exports. In a "sideEffects": false package, the bundler skips a re-export that no importer uses.
  • The --changed scan is a bundle without a link. Its graph holds a file once per target.
  • The dependency scan (--analyze, bun create) keeps the pass: its link rejects valid programs without it (Notes).
  • Considered ignore_dce_annotations for the scan: it also changes how @__PURE__ parses.

Downsides

  • With the flag, a barrel re-export that does not resolve fails the build (Could not resolve), as on 1.3.9.
  • --changed parses every file behind a project barrel. For 3,000 files of 3.4 KB: peak RSS 108 to 415 MB, 340 to 382 ms. The merge base without the field: 410 MB.
  • Per parsed file: +4 instructions in on_parse_task_complete, +153 in the --changed filter. Binary size: +0 bytes.
Notes

How it was found

  • No GitHub issue reports either problem. Both came out of a review of the barrel pass. bundler: keep a barrel's import record when a statement of the barrel reads a binding from it #45538 lists the flag under "Not fixed here".
  • The flag: import { a } from "barrel-pkg" with export { a } from "./a.js"; export { b } from "./b.js"; export { other } from "other-pkg" in a "sideEffects": false package, built with --ignore-dce-annotations. Bun 1.3.9 and esbuild 0.28.2 (--ignore-annotations) run b.js and other-pkg. Bun 1.3.10 and main (5900354) run neither.
  • The --changed scan: a project with "sideEffects": false, src/index.ts with export { a } from "./a"; export { b } from "./b", and a test that imports a. After an edit of src/b.ts, main prints --changed: 1 changed file, but no test files are affected. bun test loads b.ts, because the runtime does not tree-shake.
  • The page shape: an automated run on this PR found it. The project has "sideEffects": false, src/index.ts with export { a } from "./a"; export { routes } from "./server", src/server.ts with import page from "./page.html", a page script front.ts that imports ./comp, and comp.test.ts that imports ./src/comp. After an edit of src/comp.ts, main runs comp.test.ts. This branch without the commit d860b6a ran nothing. The scan now parses server.ts, the page puts comp.ts in the graph a second time for the browser target, and path_to_index in ChangedFilesFilter.rs kept the last source index of a path.
  • Main has the same miss without a barrel. A test that imports ./src/comp and ./src/server is not selected after an edit of comp.ts (20 of 20 runs on main). The new case "change to a file that the test and the script of a page both import selects the test" covers it.

The dependency scan is not part of this PR

  • The dependency scan serves bun install --analyze, bun add --analyze and bun create <component>. It has the same miss on main: a package that only a file behind an unused re-export imports is not installed.
  • The head d860b6a of this PR turned the barrel pass off for that scan too, with this.scan_only = fetcher.is_some() in generate_from_cli. Commit 559ae23 removes that line and its test. The dependency scan now behaves as on main.
  • Reason: generate_from_cli links the scan graph as a browser bundle before it reads the import records. With the pass off, files behind unused re-exports joined that link. Measured on release builds of 5900354 and d860b6a, each in a "sideEffects": false project:
    • import page from "./page.html" behind the unused re-export. Base: exit 0, the package is installed. d860b6a: exit 1, error: No matching export in "src/page.html" for import "default". The runtime accepts the import.
    • require() of a file with top-level await behind the unused re-export. Base: exit 0. d860b6a: exit 1, This require call is not allowed because the transitive dependency "src/tla.ts" contains a top-level await. The runtime runs it.
    • try { require("x") } catch {} behind the unused re-export, where the registry has no x. Base: exit 0. d860b6a: exit 1 (404).
    • bun create ./App.tsx stopped at the page error. With a Tailwind file behind the unused re-export it picked the Tailwind template and installed is-number bun-plugin-tailwind tailwindcss. The generated project bundles the component with the barrel pass on, so it never loads that file.
  • The same project without the sideEffects field fails in the same way on the base and on main for the page import and for the top-level await. That fault is older than the barrel pass and belongs to the link step of the scan.
  • install --analyze: read the import records before the link #46602 makes --analyze read the import records before the link, so these link errors no longer stop it. It does not read the files behind unused re-exports: that miss stays as on main, and its Notes give the two shapes a maintainer can pick from.
  • bundler: run no macro in a bundle made only for its import graph (test --changed, --analyze, bun create <component>) #46281 carries the same line this.scan_only = fetcher.is_some(). With it, the rows above fail again. Draft bundler: keep a .sqlite import external without the type attribute #45502 sets scan_only only for the --changed scan.

What the flag now does to a barrel

  • Every re-export of a "sideEffects": false barrel is an import like any other. The linker then keeps all of them, because it ignores the annotation too.
  • A re-export that only an onResolve plugin can resolve reaches the plugin (test barrel/IgnoreDCEAnnotationsAsksResolvePlugin).
  • A re-export that does not resolve is an error (test barrel/IgnoreDCEAnnotationsReportsUnresolvableReExport, CLI and API).
  • Explicit mode does not change: optimizeImports: ["barrel-pkg"] with the flag still skips the unused submodules of barrel-pkg (test barrel/IgnoreDCEAnnotationsKeepsOptimizeImports).
  • The dev server has no way to set the flag, so it does not change.

Not fixed here, and the same on main

  • The scan has no edge from the module that imports an HTML page to the script of that page. An edit of a file that only the page script reaches (front.ts in the project above) selects no test. An edit of page.html itself now selects the test that reaches the importing module: the page is in the graph twice, and both copies start the walk.
  • The scan follows the "browser" field of package.json, and the test runtime does not. With "browser": { "./src/env.ts": "./src/env.browser.ts" } and a test that imports ./src/env, an edit of src/env.ts selects no test, and an edit of src/env.browser.ts runs the test. Bun 1.4.3 and this branch give the same results. It needs no barrel and no page.

Measurements

Release builds of the merge base 5900354 and of this branch at d860b6a, same machine. Commit 559ae23 removes one assignment that ran once per process, so the per-file numbers hold.

  • Release binary: 106,927,840 to 106,927,840 bytes stripped. Text of bun-profile: 106,780,018 to 106,781,298 (size). on_parse_task_complete: 17,808 to 17,849 bytes, changed_files_filter::filter: 8,143 to 9,212 bytes (nm -S).
  • Instructions inside on_parse_task_complete, a build of 1,002 files with no barrel: 433,856 to 437,864 (qemu-x86_64 -one-insn-per-tb -d exec -dfilter on the address range of the function). resolve_import_records: 354,556 to 354,556.
  • Instructions inside changed_files_filter::filter, bun test --changed on a graph of 1,002 files with 1 changed file: 116,142 to 269,723 (same method). The filter now makes one lookup in the set of changed files for each file of the graph.
  • bun test --changed, project with a 300-name barrel, one test that imports one name, one edited file behind an unused re-export: 3 to 302 hits of ParseTask::init (gdb breakpoint count). Main selects no test. This branch selects the test.
  • bun build --ignore-dce-annotations, barrel with 3,000 re-exports and one name imported: 3 to 3,002 modules (84 ms). Bun 1.3.9 also bundles 3,002.

Wall time and peak RSS of bun test --changed, 7 runs by turns, median (worst). Every file behind the barrel is 3.4 KB (one exported constant and 30 small functions). "Chain" is 200 "sideEffects": false packages of 20 members each, where member 0 of a package imports one name of the next package, with one test per package.

Project, edit Wall ms, base Wall ms, this PR Peak RSS MB, base Peak RSS MB, this PR
300-name barrel, edit of the imported file 56 (74) 60 (85) 47 81
3,000-name barrel, edit of the imported file 340 (360) 382 (456) 108 415
3,000-name barrel, edit behind an unused re-export 58 (63) 426 (456) 34 413
Chain, edit of a file every test reaches 510 (548) 606 (654) 146 520
Chain, edit behind an unused re-export 43 (52) 596 (688) 68 524
  • In rows 3 and 5 the base selects no test. This PR selects the tests that import the barrel (1 of 1, 200 of 200).
  • The base on the same projects without the sideEffects field: 406 (424) ms and 410 MB for the 3,000-name barrel, 582 (637) ms and 520 MB for the chain. The cost of this PR is the cost of a project that has no field.
  • Plain bun test on the chain: 510 (646) ms and 140 MB. There --changed costs more than a run of every test.
  • An ordinary bun build of both projects does not change: 22 (28) to 21 (26) ms and 28 MB, 204 (246) to 229 (274) ms and 57 MB.

Status: ready for review. PR: #45938

How to reproduce on main (5900354)

The flag:

mkdir -p node_modules/barrel-pkg
echo '{ "name": "barrel-pkg", "main": "./index.js", "sideEffects": false }' > node_modules/barrel-pkg/package.json
echo 'export { a } from "./a.js"; export { b } from "./b.js";' > node_modules/barrel-pkg/index.js
echo 'export const a = "a";' > node_modules/barrel-pkg/a.js
echo 'globalThis.b = "b ran"; export const b = 1;' > node_modules/barrel-pkg/b.js
echo 'import { a } from "barrel-pkg"; console.log(a, globalThis.b);' > entry.js
bun build entry.js --ignore-dce-annotations --outfile=out.js && bun out.js
  • main and 1.3.10 print a undefined.
  • 1.3.9, esbuild --ignore-annotations and this branch print a b ran.

The scan:

echo '{ "name": "p", "type": "module", "sideEffects": false }' > package.json
mkdir src
echo 'export { a } from "./a"; export { b } from "./b";' > src/index.ts
echo 'export const a = 1;' > src/a.ts
echo 'export const b = 2;' > src/b.ts
echo 'import { test, expect } from "bun:test"; import { a } from "./src/index"; test("t", () => expect(a).toBe(1));' > barrel.test.ts
git init -q && git add -A && git commit -q -m init
echo '// touched' >> src/b.ts
bun test --changed
  • main prints --changed: 1 changed file, but no test files are affected.
  • This branch runs barrel.test.ts.

A file that a test and the script of a page both import:

echo '{ "name": "p", "type": "module" }' > package.json
mkdir src
echo 'import page from "./page.html"; export const routes = { "/": page };' > src/server.ts
echo '<!doctype html><script type="module" src="./front.ts"></script>' > src/page.html
echo 'import { c } from "./comp"; console.log(c);' > src/front.ts
echo 'export const c = 3;' > src/comp.ts
printf 'import { test, expect } from "bun:test";\nimport { c } from "./src/comp";\nimport { routes } from "./src/server";\ntest("app", () => expect([c, typeof routes]).toEqual([3, "object"]));\n' > app.test.ts
git init -q && git add -A && git commit -q -m init
echo '// touched' >> src/comp.ts
bun test --changed
  • main prints --changed: 1 changed file, but no test files are affected.
  • This branch runs app.test.ts.

The dependency scan (bun install --analyze, bun add --analyze, bun create <component>) is not part of this PR. Commit 559ae23 returns it to the behaviour of main. The description says why.

Walkthrough

The bundler now changes barrel optimization when DCE annotations are ignored and disables barrel optimization during module graph scans. Changed-file test selection now queues every matching on-disk graph source.

Changes

Barrel Optimization and Test Selection

Explanation

The description follows the repository template with both required sections, "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". The Problem, Fix, and Background parts explain the change. The Fix section states the gate change and the scan_only flag. The verification section names the suites run, the new test counts, and the 7-of-9 failure result. The Notes section is long, but it holds technical context that a reviewer can use. The description meets the template's intent, so the check passes.

I re-reviewed the two new commits and found no bugs; the dependency-scan gap raised in the earlier inline comment is now covered by scan_only = fetcher.is_some() in generate_from_cli plus the new bun add --analyze test. A human look is still worthwhile since packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts is CODEOWNER-owned and this changes --ignore-dce-annotations semantics for every automatic barrel.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced linker.options.ignore_dce_annotations to its assignment in BundleV2::init, so it is populated before apply_barrel_optimization_impl runs at parse-completion for both CLI and Bun.build.
  • Checked all three is_barrel_optimization_enabled callers: with scan_only set, deferral, the plugin re-seed path, and schedule_barrel_deferred_imports are all skipped consistently; optimizeImports still applies under the flag.
  • Confirmed scan_only defaults false in init so Bun.build, bun build, and the bake paths keep current behavior; only --changed and the --analyze/bun create ./file scans change.
  • Tests cover both CLI and API backends, both flag states, the unresolvable re-export error path, a resolve plugin, and optimizeImports under the flag; the harness maps ignoreDCEAnnotations to --ignore-dce-annotations.
Extended reasoning...

The change narrows the bundler's automatic barrel-import deferral in src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs and src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs: "sideEffects": false no longer qualifies a barrel when ignore_dce_annotations is set, and a new scan_only field on BundleV2 turns the pass off for bun test --changed and the --analyze dependency scan. It also updates CLI help, docs, and the ignoreDCEAnnotations/optimizeImports JSDoc in packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, and adds tests in test/bundler/bundler_barrel.test.ts, test/cli/install/bun-add.test.ts, and test/cli/test/test-changed.test.ts. No security-sensitive surface is touched. The decision to defer rather than approve rests on packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts being covered by .github/CODEOWNERS and on the user-visible semantic change to --ignore-dce-annotations; the second push addressed the prior run's inline finding with code and a test, so there are no outstanding objections.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked two things the new code depends on: ignore_dce_annotations is copied into linker.options inside BundleV2::init (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:3365) before any parse task runs, so the new gate in apply_barrel_optimization_impl is reached by both the CLI flag and the JS API's ignoreDCEAnnotations; and keeping the first copy of a path in path_to_index is safe for slot_to_source, because enqueue_entry_item hands out input_files.len() as the index before any import is resolved, so a test file's first copy is always its entry-point copy. The bun add --analyze gap from the earlier round is now covered by scan_only = fetcher.is_some() plus the new bun-add test.

Extended reasoning...

The change gates the bundler's barrel deferral off under --ignore-dce-annotations and for the two graph-scan consumers (bun test --changed, bun add/install --analyze) via a new BundleV2.scan_only field, reseeds the --changed backward BFS from every copy of a changed path, and updates help text, docs, and bun.d.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface. One pre-existing finding (HTML page script edges not propagating in --changed) is posted inline, so a human look is still warranted; the two checks above were traced through the code and ruled out.

Two more test shapes for the --ignore-dce-annotations gate are on a side branch, as one test-only commit on top of this branch: 295f85e (compare). They are not part of this PR. Cherry-pick the commit if they are wanted.

  • A bare import 'barrel-pkg' with the flag (CLI and API). Each case here imports a name.
  • A package that is in optimizeImports and also has "sideEffects": false, next to an annotated package that is not listed. The listed package still defers. The other package loads in full.

The three new cases fail on a release build of main 91e7e3b. With this PR merged into that commit, test/bundler/bundler_barrel.test.ts passes in a debug build (80 pass, 0 fail).

A real package that hits the flag half of this PR: lodash-es 4.17.21 has "sideEffects": false. The methods of a chain() wrapper come from the top-level code of lodash.default.js, and import { chain } from "lodash-es" does not name that module. With --ignore-dce-annotations, chain([1, 2, 3]).map(x => x * 2).value() throws chain_default([1, 2, 3]).map is not a function on 1.3.10 and on main. On 1.3.9 and with this PR it prints [2,4,6] (13 -> 641 modules in the metafile).

`generate_from_cli` no longer sets `scan_only` when it has a
`DependenciesScanner`. That scan (`bun install --analyze`,
`bun add --analyze`, `bun create <component>`) links its graph as a
browser bundle before it reads the import records. Without the barrel
pass it reached files behind unused re-exports, and the link then
failed on input that the runtime accepts: a default import of an HTML
page, and a `require()` of a module with top-level await. `bun create`
also picked its template from files that its own bundle never loads.

`scan_only` now has one writer, the `bun test --changed` scan, which
does not link.

I re-reviewed the final version of this PR (after the 559ae23 revert that keeps the barrel pass on for the dependency scan) and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes what --ignore-dce-annotations / ignoreDCEAnnotations means for every build and edits CODEOWNER-owned packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The ignore_dce_annotations gate in apply_barrel_optimization_impl is live: the resolver assigns NoSideEffectsPackageJson regardless of the flag, and BundleV2::init copies the flag into linker.options before any parse task is enqueued.
  • scan_only is set in scan_module_graph_from_cli before enqueue_entry_points_normal, and all three is_barrel_optimization_enabled callers (barrel_imports.rs, schedule_barrel_imports_after_plugin_resolve, the parse-completion path) read it, so no deferral can be scheduled in the scan.
  • ChangedFilesFilter seeding: first-wins path_to_index still maps each test file to its entry-point copy (entries are enqueued first); the dropped is_set guard is safe because the seed loop visits each index once; importers is sized to sources.len(), so seeding from any source index cannot go out of bounds.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches the bundler's barrel-file deferral gate (src/bundler/barrel_imports.rs, src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs), the bun test --changed BFS seeding in src/runtime/cli/test/ChangedFilesFilter.rs, help text, docs, and the public bun.d.ts JSDoc, with 7 new itBundled cases and 2 new --changed cases. It touches no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or path handling from untrusted input). Approval is ruled out because packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts is covered by CODEOWNERS and because the change alters user-visible semantics of an existing CLI/API flag; the hunt ran dry with no findings and the revert in 559ae23 is a scope change since the last review, which is why a short deferral is posted rather than silence.

Match each test entry point against all graph copies.

When a test file is also referenced by an HTML page script, the scan can create Bun and Browser copies of the same path. Target-specific resolution can make only the later copy reach a changed file. I could not reproduce the lost selection on the head (559ae23), so I did not change the lookup.

The fixture: shared.test.ts imports ./src/env and ./src/server. src/server.ts imports a page, and the script of the page imports ../shared.test, so the test file is in the graph twice. package.json has "browser": { "./src/env.ts": "./src/env.browser.ts" }.

  • After an edit of src/env.browser.ts, this branch runs shared.test.ts (3 of 3 runs). Bun 1.4.3 does the same (5 of 5 runs).
  • The scan applies the "browser" map to the copy for the Bun target too. Both copies of the test file then import the same file, so this fixture cannot separate the first copy from another copy.
  • I have no graph where two copies of one test file reach different files. The walk starts from every copy of a changed file, so without such a graph the copies of a test file are affected together. No test in this PR separates the first copy from the last copy.

If you have a graph where the result differs, the change to the lookup is small.

The fixture shows a different defect. This PR does not cause it and does not fix it:

echo '{ "name": "p", "type": "module", "browser": { "./src/env.ts": "./src/env.browser.ts" } }' > package.json
mkdir src
echo 'export const env = "server";' > src/env.ts
echo 'export const env = "browser";' > src/env.browser.ts
printf 'import { test, expect } from "bun:test";\nimport { env } from "./src/env";\ntest("shared", () => expect(env).toBe("server"));\n' > shared.test.ts
git init -q && git add -A && git commit -q -m init
echo '// touched' >> src/env.ts
bun test --changed
  • bun test passes, so the runtime loads src/env.ts.
  • bun test --changed prints --changed: 1 changed file, but no test files are affected, on Bun 1.4.3 and on this branch.
  • After an edit of src/env.browser.ts, which the test does not load, both run the test.
  • Without the "browser" field, an edit of src/env.ts runs the test on both.

The description lists it under "Not fixed here".

The scan holds a file once for each target. A script of a component can
reach an HTML page, and the page has its own copy of each file that it
loads. The filter kept one copy for each path, so an edit of such a file
did not select a test that imports the other copy. The walk now starts
at every copy. The hunk is the one of #45938 and #46695.

Also in the reader of component scripts:
- A loader attribute is dropped unless the specifier names a file type
  that has no imports. `./shown` with `{ type: "text" }` is then read
  by its resolved path, as `./shown.ts` was.
- A part between two `</script` gives twice its text in full. One stray
  `<script` before the script does not cut the script any more.
- `end_of_open_tag` searches with `bun_core::strings`.

The test helper uses `initRepo` and removes its repositories.
