What does this PR do?

  1. Adds a test: packages/bun-types promises nothing that a schema of the bindgen breaks.
  2. Fixes what it found. For Bun.gzipSync and Bun.deflateSync that is at run time: memLevel and strategy did nothing.
  3. Fixes how the output of those two grows, which those options make reachable.
  4. Hands a dictionary of the bindgen to its Rust body by reference.

The bindgen already writes Bindgen.d.ts from the schemas. The new case in test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts generates it and compares it with the published types through the TypeScript compiler API, which that file already uses:

  • Arguments. Every call the published types allow has arguments the schema takes. An argument they leave out is undefined. Where the schema has overloads, one of them has to take the call.
  • Results and properties. Each one the published types name is one the schema gives. They may be narrower: Uint8Array where the schema says a buffer, -1 | 0 | 1 where it says a number. Not by leaving out null or undefined, which the schema says only of a result that can be that. void promises nothing.
  • Members. A dictionary or a class of the schema lists all it has, so no published object has a member it lacks: an option that nothing reads, a member of a result that nothing gives, a method that is not there.
  • Names. Every export of the schema is published.
  • Classes. The constructor, the static members and the prototype, each in the same way.

That is 66 exports of 15 of the 22 schema files. Of the other 7, JavaScript wraps 1 (node:os), only tests reach 3, 1 has module._stat, which is not published, and 2 have only types.

It compares types, so it does not see what a body does with a member that its dictionary has. windowBits of Bun.gzipSync and Bun.deflateSync is converted and not used, and so are level, memLevel and strategy of Bun.gunzipSync and Bun.inflateSync. The schema says so of each. All four are as on main, and this PR leaves them.

The test runs in .github/workflows/bun-types.yml, which now also runs when a .bind.ts file or src/codegen changes.

PUBLISHED_AS in the test says what the published types call the exports of each schema file, one line per file, or null. A schema file that is not listed fails the test, and so does a listed one that Bindgen.d.ts does not have, so none goes unchecked.

The generated types say what an argument takes

They said what it is meant to be given, so Bun.semver.satisfies({ toString() {} }, …) looked refused when it is not.

Schema Was Now
b.string.loose, b.string.loose.utf8, .owned string any
b.bool.loose boolean any
b.i32.loose, .wrap, .enforceRange(), and the other integers number any
b.f64.loose, .allowBigInt number, number | bigint any
b.null in a union, which takes undefined too null null | undefined

.validateInteger() refuses what is not a number, so it stays number.

This changes only Bindgen.d.ts, in 63 lines.

A dictionary is handed to its Rust body by reference

The thunk made the struct and handed it over by value. The structs were Copy, and clippy refuses a Copy type over 64 bytes by value, so a body whose options grew past that needed #[allow(clippy::large_types_passed_by_value)], and docs/project/bindgen.mdx said so. Three had it: CSRF.verify, inflateSync and gunzipSync.

The struct now stays in the frame of the thunk and the body takes options: &ZlibCompressionOptions<'a>. A generated dictionary is not Copy, since nothing copies it, and neither is a union that holds one. So no lint about the size of a Copy type has a say at either end: BracesOptions is 2 bytes, and clippy refuses a Copy type of 8 bytes or less by reference. No allow of either lint is added, and the three are gone. That is for an argument that is a dictionary, with .default() or without, Inside a union, as for Glob#scan and password.hash, inside .optional or in an array it is held by value.

Against the generator of main (c814409) on the same schemas: 15 calls pass &options, 17 types lose #[derive(Clone, Copy)] (16 dictionaries and the union of Glob#scan), and nothing else differs. That is in the 2 generated Rust files; the other 47 generated files are byte for byte the same. The 15 bodies change their signature, and so do the two helpers they hand the options to. Nothing else changes but what follows from that: inflate_sync and gunzip_sync pass options on where they passed &options, and one match in the test bindings borrows a nested dictionary that it moved out.

What it found

Each is the same in 1.4.3 as on main.

Published At run time Now published
Bun.mmap(path: PathLike) a Buffer, an ArrayBuffer and a URL throw path: string
No byteLength on an instance of MD4, MD5, SHA1, SHA224, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, SHA512_256 new Bun.MD5().byteLength is 16 readonly byteLength: number
Bun.hash(data, seed?): number | bigint always a bigint bigint
memLevel and strategy of Bun.gzipSync and Bun.deflateSync the same bytes whatever they are as it was: they now work

memLevel and strategy

Published since 2022 and described in docs/runtime/utils.mdx. The wrapper around zlib had both fields and gave them to deflateInit2_; gzip_or_deflate_sync never filled them in. The schema's dictionary now has the two members and the body passes them on. Each is an integer in its range, b.i32.validateInteger(1, 9) and (0, 4): anything else is refused by name and never turned into another value, so { strategy: "Z_RLE" } is not the default strategy.

Bun.gzipSync(data, …), 29880 bytes main Now
no options 19183 bytes 19183 bytes
{ strategy: 2 } 19183 19191
{ strategy: 3 } 19183 19192
{ memLevel: 1 } 19183 24039
{ memLevel: 9 } 19183 19409
{ level: 9 } 20016 20016
{ level: 9, strategy: 1 } 20016 19194

libdeflate has neither, so with library: "libdeflate" they change no byte.

The JSDoc of strategy, and its copy in docs/runtime/utils.mdx, named five constants and not where they are. It now gives the number of each, says they are constants of node:zlib, and says that any other value throws. The type stays number: @types/node has Z_RLE: number, which 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 would refuse.

The output can be longer than deflateBound()

The output starts with the room deflateBound() asks for: in zlib-ng the input, an eighth of it, 3 bytes and the wrapper, whatever memLevel and strategy are. { memLevel: 9, strategy: 4 } can need more. Z_FIXED has no tree of its own, and a block of 32767 symbols that the window has slid past cannot be stored, so bytes from 144 up cost 9 bits each and every block 10 more.

ZlibCompressorArrayList::read_all on main has a branch for that, and it is wrong in three ways:

  • The length of the Vec is still 0 there. Reserving 4096 more does nothing, zlib is handed the start of the buffer again, and the length is then set past the capacity. Nothing reaches it on main, where both options are the defaults, but for the next.
  • The room is given to zlib as capacity as uInt, the low 32 bits of it. From an input of about 3.82 GB the bound is over 4 GiB, so zlib gets a small part of the buffer and that branch has to carry on.
  • The place in the output is read from zlib's total_out, a c_ulong, which is 32 bits on Windows.

It now does what step in that file does. Each pass hands zlib the spare capacity of the Vec, at most u32::MAX of it, and adds what zlib used of it to the length. The length is the only record of the place, and it grows when there is no spare capacity. src/zlib/lib.rs is 34 lines shorter.

Bun.deflateSync(input, { memLevel: 9, strategy: 4, level: 2 }), 168099840 bytes
deflateBound() 189112323
node:zlib, which grows its output 189112331
The loop of main with the two options passed on, on a debug build panic: Vec::set_len requires that new_len <= capacity()
Now 189112331, and it decompresses to the input

An input has to be that long. The first block is always stored, which leaves 4092 bytes of the bound to spare, and each block after it uses up less than one: 5120 blocks of 32768 bytes are the fewest that pass it.

Making the first argument of which optional in the published types does not fail it, rightly: the schema has it optional, and Bun.which() is null on main.

By reference. cargo clippy passes on bun_runtime and bun_jsc. On a debug build, the tests of all 15 functions pass: test/internal/bindgen.test.ts (117), zlib.test.js (457), zstd.test.ts (100), csrf.test.ts (40), which.test.ts (8), mmap.test.js (26), brace.test.ts (47), os.test.js (59), open-in-editor-gc.test.ts (4).

memLevel and strategy. 39 new tests in test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js. For each option the bytes of the 29880 are those node:zlib gives for it, are not those without it, and decompress to the input. 35 of them fail on 1.4.3 and on main; the other 4 say that libdeflate ignores both and that the defaults are 8 and 0. The file passes on a debug build: 457 pass, 2 skip.

The output longer than the bound. One of the 39 is the call in the table above. It asserts that the output is longer than the bound, so it fails if it stops reaching the branch. Without the step that grows the Vec it is the only one of the 39 that fails, with buffer error. The same work through node:zlib takes 1.6 s and 564 MB on the release binary of main. It has a timeout of its own only on a debug build, as leak.test.ts beside it does.

The input over 3.82 GB. By hand, since it takes a 3.9 GB input and as much output: both functions, each under a limit of 20 GB of memory, on 1.4.3, on main and on a debug build of this branch. The first two are killed at the limit, and the third returns 3900297555 bytes (deflateSync) that decompress to the input. 3700000000 bytes are right on main and on this branch. 4294967295 bytes, whose output is too long for an ArrayBuffer, throw RangeError: Out of memory. There is no test of it, and nothing of it was run on Windows.

The same bytes. 960 calls with neither option, on main and on a debug build of this branch: both functions, no options and each level from -1 to 9, 20 lengths from 0 to 5000011 around the sizes of blocks, of bytes that compress and of bytes that do not. The length, the length of the ArrayBuffer and the CRC of each are the same.

The cost of a call. Two more members are read from an options object. Instructions in user mode for each call, on 16 bytes so that the call itself shows, from the release binaries of CI for main (c814409) and for this branch (86e3fe9, which has the loop of main with the length set before it grows; the dictionary and the thunk are those of the head). The same binary measured twice differs by at most 20.

main Now
gzipSync(data) 19875 19876 +1
gzipSync(data, {}) 20149 20291 +142
gzipSync(data, { level: 1 }) 9566 9722 +156
gzipSync(data, { library: "libdeflate" }) 38340 38479 +139
deflateSync(data) 19540 19559 +19
deflateSync(data, {}) 19822 19969 +147
deflateSync(data, { level: 1 }) 9257 9424 +167
deflateSync(data, { library: "libdeflate" }) 38246 38401 +155

The matrix. 792 calls of the four functions: 37 values for each of memLevel, strategy, level and windowBits, and every level with every strategy, through a Proxy that records what is read, on 1.4.3, on main (c814409, the release binary of its CI build) and on a debug build of this branch. 310 are identical, among them every call of gunzipSync and inflateSync. A script puts each of the other 482 in exactly one row above and fails on one it does not know.

Walkthrough

Bindgen now types coercing conversions as any and passes dictionary arguments by reference. An integration test compares published Bun types with generated schemas. Bun declarations and workflow filters are updated. Zlib compression applies memLevel and strategy options, with added validation and output tests.

Changes

Bindgen Type Compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Coercion type spellings
src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts, docs/project/bindgen.mdx
Coercing conversions use any in generated TypeScript spellings. UnitType derives type details from its null or undefined kind. The documentation describes these spellings.
Dictionary arguments by reference
src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts, src/jsc/bindgen_test.rs, src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs, src/runtime/api/csrf_jsc.rs, src/runtime/node/node_os.rs, docs/project/bindgen.mdx
Generated Rust bodies and runtime functions borrow option structs. Generated dictionary structs no longer derive Clone or Copy. Documentation and examples describe borrowed dictionaries.
Published type compatibility check
test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts, .github/workflows/bun-types.yml
The integration test maps generated schemas to published types and checks compatibility. Bun declarations update Bun.hash, Bun.mmap, and CryptoHashInterface. Workflow path filters include bindgen sources.

Zlib Compression Options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Zlib option parsing and compression
src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts, src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs, src/zlib/lib.rs, test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js, docs/runtime/utils.mdx, packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts
Compression options add memLevel and strategy. The zlib path applies supplied values. Tests check valid and invalid values, output comparisons, round trips, and output buffer sizing. Documentation describes accepted values and defaults.

Beyond the inline findings, I also traced every reader of tsType in src/codegen: only the Bindgen.d.ts emitter (bindgen-emit.ts) and error-message strings consume it, so the any/null | undefined changes in bindgen-lib-internal.ts cannot alter the generated C++ or Rust. The Bun.mmap narrowing to path: string matches the schema (b.string.utf8, strict), so a Buffer or URL that already threw at runtime is now refused at type-check time, which is the intended tightening rather than a regression.

Extended reasoning...

The PR adds a types-vs-schema comparison test, makes coercing bindgen argument types any in the generated Bindgen.d.ts, and narrows one published signature; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Six inline findings cover gaps in the comparison (one-directional leaf checks, no reverse member walk, diagnostics only on published.ts, no CI path trigger, namespace call signatures, BytesType), so a human should weigh those before merge; the ruled-out notes here record that the codegen change is confined to the .d.ts output and that the mmap narrowing is schema-accurate.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts — Maintainers get a types check that cannot flag a published optional or mistyped password, hash or data argument, although the runtime throws on undefined. BytesType.tsType at src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts:740 spells any for every otherwise: "toString" schema, including ones with refuse: ["undefined"] (PasswordObject.bind.ts:24, HashObject.bind.ts:5, every parse input). The new refusal check at bun-types.test.ts:349 then accepts undefined and anything else. Fix: spell what the conversion takes for every coercing type, here {} | null or {} when undefined (and null) are refused, so a published password?: fails the test like a strict string does. [also at: src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts:371 - Maintainers get a types check that cannot flag a published optional or mistyped parameter for a .loose integer or .enforceRange() argument, though calling it with undefined throws. bindgen-lib-internal.ts:371 spells both as any, so the undefined the test substitutes for a missing argument (bun-types.test.ts:347) is always assignable.]

    Why this was flagged

The PR's rule (bindgen-lib-internal.ts:170) is that tsType is any where the conversion coerces, and the test relies on it: refusal() at test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts:347-349 passes undefined for a published parameter the published signature leaves out and checks it is assignable to the schema's tsType. BytesType.tsType at src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts:740 returns any whenever otherwise === "toString", before looking at refuse. PasswordObject.bind.ts:24 (copied, refuse: ["undefined"]) is used by Bun.password.hash and verify; HashObject.bind.ts:5 (refuse: ["undefined", "null"]) by every Bun.hash function. At runtime the C++ converter (refuseUndefined at :732) throws for them. So a published change that makes password, hash or data optional, or types it undefined, passes this test. Remedy: in BytesType.tsType compose the type from refuse ({} for both refused, {} | null for undefined refused, any otherwise) and add a test break for it.

Verification: nit — the new test has a blind spot for every b.bytes({ otherwise: "toString", refuse: [...] }) argument, triggered whenever a published signature for such an argument is made optional or given a wrong type. src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts:740 if (this.#options.otherwise === "toString") return "any"; returns any before refuse is consulted, so no refusal is ever reported.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I checked the latest push: the generated ZlibCompressionOptions with two i32 members is 56 bytes, under clippy's 64-byte pass-by-value limit, so the by-value signatures of gzip_sync, deflate_sync and gzip_or_deflate_sync in src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs are fine; validateInteger(1, 9) / validateInteger(0, 4) reject NaN, fractions, strings and null before the cast, and the new zlib tests exercise those plus incompressible input at memLevel: 1.

Extended reasoning...

The PR adds a types-vs-schema integration test, changes three published declarations in bun.d.ts, makes bindgen emit any for coercing conversions, and wires memLevel/strategy of Bun.gzipSync/deflateSync through to zlib with range-validated i32 members. No security-sensitive surface. The latest commit addressed the earlier inline findings (struct size, NaN/fraction casts, incompressible-output coverage); the one remaining confirmed finding is a pre-existing windowBits drop posted inline.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the growth path the new zlib test exercises: read_all in src/zlib/lib.rs now syncs len to total_out before try_reserve, so reserve_expand_tail(0) hands zlib the real tail and the later set_len stays within capacity. The test.skipIf(isDebug) on the new bun-types case matches every other typecheck case in that file, so it is not a new skip.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push adds the set_len fix in ZlibCompressorArrayList::read_all and the 177 MB regression test for it; I read the fixed growth path against the initial reservation and found it consistent. The isDebug skip on the new bun-types test follows the file's existing pattern at lines 126, 502 and 534.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the growth branch of ZlibCompressorArrayList::read_all in src/zlib/lib.rs as it now stands: the Vec's len is set to total_out before try_reserve(4096), reserve_expand_tail(0) hands zlib the tail from that len, and StreamEnd truncates back to total_out, so the earlier set_len-past-capacity path is closed. The by-reference emitter change borrows only a bare or .default()-wrapped dictionary, and every body in the diff takes & to match.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push shrinks the zlib bound-overflow test and leaves the growth fix in src/zlib/lib.rs and the memLevel/strategy plumbing in src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs unchanged. The one inline finding this run is a pre-existing u32 truncation on multi-gigabyte inputs, not introduced here.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/zlib/lib.rs — pre-existing: callers of Bun.gzipSync or Bun.deflateSync on inputs of about 3.82 GB or more get "Zlib returned an error" once the output passes 2^32 minus the bound, where the base silently returns corrupted bytes. deflateBound() of such an input exceeds 2^32, and as uInt at src/zlib/lib.rs:745 and :818 keeps only the low 32 bits of the room, so after the first fill the repaired growth path hands zlib avail_out of exactly 2^32, which truncates to 0 and trips the ShortRead return at :821. Fix: clamp the room handed to zlib to uInt::MAX at both sites (and the reader's :328 sibling) and keep looping until StreamEnd, so a buffer larger than 4 GiB is filled in several passes.

    Why this was flagged

A user calls Bun.deflateSync(data) with data of 3.9e9 bytes, which fits an ArrayBuffer (src/jsc/array_buffer.rs:164, MAX_SIZE = c_uint::MAX). init_with_list_allocator reserves deflateBound(), about 1.125 times the input, so capacity B is about 4.39e9, and src/zlib/lib.rs:745 sets avail_out = capacity() as uInt, which is B - 2^32, about 100 MB. If the compressed stream is longer than that, deflate returns Ok with avail_out 0 and read_all enters the growth branch. try_reserve(4096) is a no-op since capacity already exceeds len + 4096, and reserve_expand_tail(0) at :816 returns a tail of exactly B - total_out = 2^32 bytes. avail_out as uInt at :818 makes that 0, so :821-822 returns Err(ZlibError::ShortRead), which read_error at src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:1869 reports as "Zlib returned an error". On the base branch the same input takes the old branch, which re-handed zlib the start of the buffer with the same truncated avail_out, so deflate overwrote the first bytes repeatedly and the caller got a Uint8Array of the right length with wrong contents.

Verification: The truncation is pre-existing: src/zlib/lib.rs:745 capacity() as uInt keeps only the low 32 bits of a bound above 2^32, so after the first fill :816 reserve_expand_tail(0) returns exactly 2^32, :818 avail_out as uInt truncates it to 0 and :821-822 returns ZlibError::ShortRead, thrown as "Zlib returned an error" at src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:1869. On base c814409 the same :745 truncation silently corrupted output instead.

I reviewed the latest push and didn't find any bugs. Because it changes the calling convention of every generated dictionary argument and rewrites the unsafe output loop in src/zlib/lib.rs, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The new read_all in src/zlib/lib.rs: the written count now comes from the avail_out delta, not total_out, so the earlier 32-bit total_out concern on Windows no longer applies; commit_spare is only ever given room - avail_out, which is within the spare slice it was handed, and the only caller (gzip_or_deflate_sync) passes an empty Vec, so try_reserve_exact(bound) on top of len is the same reservation as before.
  • The rustBorrow change in src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts: the & is applied to both the declared parameter and the call site from the same predicate, and class setters keep by-value at both ends, so declaration and call cannot drift apart.
  • mem_level/strategy flow from the validateInteger(...).default(...) members straight into deflateInit2_; the zlib test matrix covers both compressors, the four strategies, both memLevel extremes, the rejection cases, and the past-deflateBound() growth path.
Extended reasoning...

The diff touches the bindgen emitter (dictionary arguments now passed by reference, Copy derive removed from generated dictionaries, tsType of coercing conversions changed to any), the fifteen Rust bodies whose signatures follow from that, the ZlibCompressorArrayList output loop, the published bun.d.ts, docs, the bun-types workflow paths, and two tests. No security-sensitive surface is involved beyond the unsafe buffer handling in the zlib compressor, which was checked by hand. Deferring rather than approving because the change is broad (generated ABI for every schema dictionary) and the correctness of the unsafe loop and of the generator depends on a compile and CI run I cannot perform here; this run found no new issues and the item raised on the previous version was addressed by the latest commit.
