Problem

  • In {guid}/app, bun ./index.html exits 1 with error: No HTML files found matching "/tmp/{guid}/app/index.html". With a second page, Bun serves only that page. Beside a/app, {a,b}/app serves the page of a/app.
  • src/js/internal/html.ts:79 reads process.argv[1], the resolved path, as a glob. pages_of in check_command.rs copies that test for bun --check.

Fix

  • New src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs answers both callers. An argument is the path of a page when a file has that path and the pattern cannot match it.
  • Correct: such a pattern finds only other files ({a,b}/index.html matches a/index.html). A pattern that matches its own text (pages/*.html) stays a pattern.
  • Verified: bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts (23 new, 16 fail on main), check.test.ts (11 new, 8 fail on main). Also entry-points.test.ts, as-node.test.ts.
  • Self-reviewed: 6 concerns raised, 6 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • bun ./index.html './pages/*.html' serves each page. Bun expands the quoted pattern. bun --check type checks their scripts first.
  • html_pages.bind.ts is the schema of the binding (One bindgen: replace bindgen v1 and v2, add classes, generate the Rust side #45104). A generator writes the code that converts the arguments.
  • Found by reading the code, not reported by a user. bun './*.html' works on main there.
  • Weighed: a stat before each glob (the rule stays written twice). Also a VM field for what the command line resolved (state for one race).

Downsides

Notes

The rule, case by case. text is the argument. html.ts passes process.argv[1] too, which is the resolved absolute path of the main module.

argument a file has that path matches its own text read as
./index.html any (no * or {) page, as before
/tmp/{a,b}/app/index.html yes no page (was: pattern)
./p{1}.html yes no page (was: pattern, served p1.html)
{about, none}.html no no pattern, as before
./pages/*.html yes or no yes pattern, as before
/tmp/st*r/app/index.html yes yes pattern, as before

Measured. Release builds (default profile) of main f0e4f6b and of that commit with the src/ diff of this PR at that time (7507472), same toolchain, source directory and build directory. Two things changed after that: the rebases (the branch is now on 91e7e3b), and names_file calls join_abs_string_buf_z_checked for steps that it wrote by hand. I did not build the release binaries again. Counts are size, nm, and gdb breakpoint and catch syscall hit counts. strace, perf, valgrind and bloaty are not on the machine.

  • Text: 106,414,641 to 106,419,816 bytes (+5,175). Data and bss: equal. The symbols that change size: the Rust half of the binding +2,042, the array conversion of the result +1,354, html_pages::pages_of +1,026, the C++ half of the binding +821 and +191, check_before -279, jsDollarLazy +6, two strings +9.
  • With $newRustFunction and a hand-written host function, the same function cost +3,128 bytes on an earlier base. One bindgen: replace bindgen v1 and v2, add classes, generate the Rust side #45104 names the binding generator as the mechanism that $newRustFunction moves to, so the binding uses it.
  • RunCommand::boot, check_main and VirtualMachine: unchanged. The diff does not touch run_command.rs, VirtualMachine.rs or context.rs.
  • Host calls for each plain .html argument: String.prototype.includes 4 to 1, the new function 0 to 1. For bun ./index.html in {a,b}/app: Bun.Glob constructions 1 to 0.
  • Path syscalls (open, openat, openat2, stat, lstat, statx, newfstatat, access, faccessat, faccessat2, readlink, readlinkat, getdents64). A preload replaces Bun.serve, so a run exits when the pages are known:
command main this PR
bun ./index.html 43 43
bun ./index.html ./about.html 43 43
bun './**/*.html' 57 57
bun ./index.html '{about,none}.html' 46 47
bun --check ./index.html 60 60
bun main.ts 41 41
in {a,b}/app beside a/app: bun ./index.html 62 47
in {a,b}/app beside a/app: bun --check ./index.html 79 69
  • The brace pattern row has one newfstatat more: the look for a file with that name.
  • In {a,b}/app, main serves a/app/index.html, and --check reports the TS2322 of a/app/index.ts. This PR serves and checks the page of {a,b}/app.
  • Wall clock: no claim. On the first version of this PR, interleaved A/B with 200 runs gave deltas from -0.55 ms to +1.4 ms between copies of the same two binaries.

Tests. On main, 15 of the 22 spawned cases in bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts fail. The 7 that pass are pins: patterns that never had the directory name in them, a brace pattern as the first argument (Module not found), a pattern in a missing directory (ENOENT), a missing absolute page, a pattern beside a page named *.html, and a pattern whose search meets a directory that cannot be read (EACCES, no page is served). The table test calls the new function through bun:internal-for-testing, so the file does not load on a build without it. In check.test.ts, 8 of the 11 new rows fail on main. The other three are pins: the *.html row, and two rows for a pattern whose search meets a directory that cannot be read. In the first, the page that was found has a type error, and the check reports it. In the second it has none, and the run that follows the check reports the EACCES of the search. The rows with a directory that cannot be read do not run as root or on Windows. I ran them as uid 65534, with this diff and with a debug build of main's src/ (d0831bc). The preload in the serve tests replaces Bun.serve, so a run prints its pages and exits, and it sorts the pages without localeCompare, which costs a second in a debug build.

Debug build with this diff on 91e7e3b: bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts 29 pass and 1 skipped as root, the --check page tests of check.test.ts 20 pass, entry-points.test.ts, as-node.test.ts, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts and build-codegen-declared-outputs.test.ts 298 pass, test/internal/source-lints 182 pass. The schema test of bun-types.test.ts does not run in a debug build. It passes with the release build on the machine. bun fmt --check, bun lint, rustfmt --check and cargo clippy -p bun_runtime pass for the changed files. The five tsc --noEmit projects of the Lint JavaScript check pass. bun run rust:check-all x86_64-pc-windows-msvc aarch64-apple-darwin passes. Nothing was run on Windows or macOS. The new code has no platform branch.

Review follow-up. The second commit answers two findings of the automated review:

  1. The look for a file gave up when the working directory plus the argument was longer than a path, although an absolute argument does not need the working directory. In a directory deeper than about 2,000 bytes, the page was read as a pattern again. The join now fails only when its result does not fit. A Linux test runs bun ./index.html under {a,b} in such a directory.
  2. When a walk met an error, bun --check checked no page of that pattern. Before this PR it checked the pages that were found before the error. The function now returns those pages with the error, and a test pins it. html.ts still throws the error.

Without the second commit, the three new tests fail.

The third commit only shortens the comments that this PR adds in src/ to one line each.

The fourth commit follows #45104, which landed on main after this PR opened. The binding was $newRustFunction with a hand-written host function. It is now the schema html_pages.bind.ts: the Rust body gets both arguments as bytes and returns the list, and the generated code converts them. Three things change with it:

  • The function returns the paths as a list, which bun --check takes without a copy.
  • The two arguments must be strings. The old binding converted any value to a string. html.ts passes strings.
  • The errors are those of Bun.Glob.prototype.scanSync (ScanError of glob.rs), as before.

A review of that commit found no defect. It renamed the Rust body to pages_of_from_js, the name that gc_from_js and prefetch_from_js use. The same commit applies a review suggestion to the test of a directory that cannot be read: isRoot from the harness, and one assertion.

The fifth commit repairs the Lint JavaScript check, which failed on the fourth with src/cli/html_pages.bind.ts(1,20): error TS2307: Cannot find module '../../codegen/bindgen-lib.ts'. src/cli is a link to src/runtime/cli. tsc walks the link first, and then skips src/runtime/cli as a directory that it has seen. So it read the schema at src/cli/, where that import does not resolve. The schema is the first TypeScript file in runtime/cli that is not a template. src/tsconfig.json now excludes cli/**, and tsc reads the file at its real path. cli alone is not enough: it excludes the files below the link, but tsc still walks it.

The sixth commit changes tests only. bun-types.test.ts lists every bindgen schema since #45794, and this schema is listed as not published. The test of bun --check with a directory that cannot be read has the second row that Tests describes. It answers a review question: bun --check does not pass without a check when the search for pages fails, because the run that follows reports the error, as on main.

The seventh commit answers three review notes. names_file calls join_abs_string_buf_z_checked. The comment on pagesOf in html.ts no longer names check_command.rs. The serve tests have the row for a search that meets a directory that cannot be read.

The branch was rebased two times after that, last onto 91e7e3b. #45682 moved the flags of html.ts to internal/serve_cli. It did not change the loop over the page arguments. The one conflict was the list of schemas in bun-types.test.ts, where main added entries.

Self-review. The first version of this change also recorded, in RuntimeOptions and in the VM, whether the command line had resolved the main module, and it matched an absolute pattern below the directories that it shares with the working directory. The review asked for the smaller shape that is here. Its six concerns, and what was done:

  1. The stored verdict changed no tested result. Its one effect was an entry that is deleted before it is served, started from above the {a,b} directory. Removed.
  2. A page named *.html hid the pattern that spells it: bun './pages/*.html' served 1 page where main serves 3. The rule now keeps a pattern that matches its own text. A serve test and a --check row pin it.
  3. The comparison with the working directory failed after cd through a symbolic link. Removed, see Not fixed.
  4. The Windows branches of that comparison ran in no test. Removed with it.
  5. Test gaps: --check rows from the project root, rows for a page named p{1}.html, a table that calls the function in process, temporary directories with a non-ASCII name.
  6. A comment said that serve and --check find the same pages. They share only this function. The comment now names what --check repeats.

Not fixed.

  • A path that matches its own text as a pattern stays a pattern. Under st*r/app, bun ./index.html serves that page, and also star/app/index.html if it exists, as on main. A fix needs to know what the user typed, which html.ts does not get.
  • A pattern that the user types with the directory in it: bun "$PWD/*.html" and node './*.html' under {a,b}/. Do not read the directory of a sideEffects glob or a --filter path as glob syntax #44939 adds bun_glob::literal_base_len for this class. A follow-up can use it once that lands.
  • A page that is missing, under {a,b}/, when a sibling has it: the argument is then a pattern and the sibling's page is served.
  • bun run ignore HTML files when they have a node_modules folder in path #24953: a page under node_modules still fails with No HTML files found matching. That rule is in html.ts and in check_command.rs, and Remove node_modules file exclusion in html execution for plain path #24981 changes it. Question for a maintainer: should a page that an argument names be served when it is under node_modules?
  • bun --check still ignores a walk error and joins the argument to the working directory, where html.ts calls Bun.resolveSync. So the two can still differ for an argument that tsconfig paths maps elsewhere.
  • bun './{index,about}.html' as the first argument is still Module not found. The command line looks for a file first and takes only * for a pattern.

Related. #44939 fixes the same class for sideEffects globs and --filter paths and lists this site as not fixed. #32902 makes a brace group without a comma literal in the matcher, which covers names such as {guid} from the other side. #43409, #35469 and #43495 change how the entry reaches html.ts. This diff does not touch those files.

Status: ready for review.

Reproduced on main (f0e4f6b, release build) and on the debug build:

mkdir -p '/tmp/h/{guid-1234}/app' && cd '/tmp/h/{guid-1234}/app'
echo '<!doctype html><html><body>index</body></html>' > index.html
echo '<!doctype html><html><body>about</body></html>' > about.html
bun ./index.html # error: No HTML files found matching "/tmp/h/{guid-1234}/app/index.html", exit 1
bun ./index.html ./about.html # serves only about.html, exit 0

In /tmp/h/{a,b}/app beside /tmp/h/a/app, bun ./index.html serves /tmp/h/a/app/index.html, and bun --check ./index.html type checks the script of that page.

With this PR, each command serves and checks the pages that the arguments name.

I re-reviewed after the second push and found no new bugs; commit 03ad001 addresses both points from my earlier inline comments (the --check walk-error path now keeps the pages found before the error, and names_file now sizes the probe on the joined path via join_abs_string_buf_checked), each with a regression test. Since this changes which bun <arg> and bun --check arguments are treated as a literal page versus a glob, and adds a new Rust host function on the HTML-entry startup path, a human look at the heuristic itself is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • html_pages.rs: the buf[..room] / buf[len] = 0 / ZStr::from_buf sequence is in-bounds (join_abs_string_buf_checked returns None when the joined path exceeds room, and buf.len() - 1 leaves the NUL slot); walker.walk() populates matched_paths before returning Ok(Err), so partial matches survive the mem::take.
  • js_pages_of: both to_utf8 calls propagate exceptions before use; the walk error is thrown via to_js, matching the previous Bun.Glob.scanSync failure mode in html.ts.
  • Tests: the Linux deep-directory case and the chmod-0o000 --check case exercise exactly the two clauses the follow-up commit changed, and the test.each matrices pin the "pattern that matches its own text stays a pattern" rule on both entry points.
Extended reasoning...

The PR adds src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs (a shared pages_of plus a #[bun_jsc::host_fn] wrapper), rewires src/js/internal/html.ts and the --check page finder in check_command.rs to call it, registers the file in the js2native path table and cli/mod.rs, exports a test hook in internal-for-testing.ts, and adds ~270 lines of tests. It touches no auth, crypto, or network surface; the only security-adjacent piece is a NUL-terminated path probe through the path-buffer pool, which I traced and found bounds-correct. The second commit resolved both of my earlier inline findings with tests, no third-party objection is outstanding, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files. I deferred rather than approved because the change alters user-visible CLI argument interpretation with a heuristic (bun_glob::match(text, text) plus a file stat) whose edge cases the author themself lists as open, which merits a maintainer's judgment rather than being a mechanical change.

I re-reviewed the current four-commit version and found no bugs; the two points from my first pass (the over-strict length check before the stat, and dropping pages found before a walk error) are both addressed in the code now. Because this changes which file bun <entry>.html and bun --check resolve for a user-typed argument via a new heuristic (exists as a regular file AND the text does not match itself as a glob), and introduces a new bindgen-backed binding, a maintainer look at the rule itself is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • html_pages.rs: names_file reserves one byte for NUL, join_abs_string_buf_checked returns None only when the joined result does not fit, and ZStr::from_buf preconditions hold; mem::take on matched_paths keeps partial results alongside the walk error.
  • Walker options passed to init_with_cwd match Bun.Glob.prototype.scanSync defaults (files only, non-absolute), so pattern arguments behave as before; pages_of_from_js maps errors to the same ScanError shapes html.ts previously got from scanSync.
  • html.ts now reaches the walker through $bindgen instead of the user-overridable Bun.Glob global; the undefined branch falls through to the unchanged Bun.resolveSync path.
  • The unreadable-directory --check test is deterministic: the root listing (which yields index.html) is fully iterated before the walker opens locked/, and the test uses isRoot/isWindows from harness with a combined assertion.
Extended reasoning...

The PR adds src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs (76 lines) with a bindgen schema html_pages.bind.ts, rewires src/js/internal/html.ts and the pages_of helper in check_command.rs to it, and adds about 260 lines of spawned tests across bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts and check.test.ts. It touches no auth, crypto, or network surface; the only new syscall is a single fstatat on a cwd-joined, NUL-terminated path from a pooled PathBuffer. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings, no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files, and the commits since my last review address every point I raised. I deferred rather than approved because the change alters user-visible entry resolution through a new heuristic that the author documents as still wrong for self-matching patterns like st*r/, which is a design trade-off a maintainer should weigh, and I could not build or run the suite in this session to confirm the bindgen generation and test claims.

I reviewed the latest push and didn't find any bugs; the points from my earlier passes (pages found before a walk error are now returned with it, the deep-directory join, the isRoot test) are addressed in this version. Because it changes how bun <page> and bun --check interpret CLI arguments and adds a new bindgen binding, a human look at the page-vs-pattern rule is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • html_pages.rs: names_file buffer sizing (join into len-1, NUL at len, ZStr::from_buf), walk() partial results taken from matched_paths, and the error mapping to the same ScanError variants scanSync throws.
  • html.ts and check_command.rs against the old inline glob code: same */{ trigger, same walker options, node_modules filtering unchanged.
  • The src/tsconfig.json cli/** exclusion (src/cli is a symlink to runtime/cli) and the PUBLISHED_AS registration in the bun-types test.
  • Optional: names_file re-derives bun_paths::resolve_path::join_abs_string_buf_z_checked step for step; calling it directly would drop a few lines.
Extended reasoning...

The change adds src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs and a bindgen schema html_pages.bind.ts, rewires src/js/internal/html.ts and check_command.rs::pages_of to a shared page-vs-pattern rule (a CLI argument containing * or { is a literal page when a file exists at that path and the pattern does not match its own text), adjusts src/tsconfig.json for the src/cli symlink, and adds subprocess tests for serve and --check. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the only new syscall is one fstatat on a user-supplied path, NUL-terminated inside a pooled PathBuffer with checked length. All three findings from prior runs are addressed in the code, no CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files, and the bug hunt ran dry. It is not approved outright because it changes user-facing CLI argument interpretation with a heuristic that a maintainer should weigh, and it introduces a new binding plus a tsconfig exclusion change.

Code review found no issues

`bun ./index.html` in a directory such as `{GUID}/app` exits with
`No HTML files found matching`, and with a second page it serves only
that one. Beside a directory `a/app`, `{a,b}/app` serves the page of
`a/app`. src/js/internal/html.ts read process.argv[1], the resolved
absolute path, as a glob pattern. `pages_of` in check_command.rs had a
copy of that test for `bun --check`.

Both now ask `pages_of` in src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs. An argument
with `*` or `{` is the path of a page if a file has that path and the
argument does not match its own text as a pattern. Such a pattern can
only find other files. Every other argument is read as before.
…d before a walk error

`names_file` compared the length of the working directory plus the
argument with the path buffer. An absolute page path in a deep directory
was then not looked at, and was read as a pattern. The check now fails
only when the joined path does not fit.

`pages_of` returns the pages that a walk found before an error, and the
error. `bun --check` checks those pages, as it did before the finder was
shared. html.ts still throws the error.
The binding is a schema in html_pages.bind.ts. The finder returns the paths
as a list, which --check takes without a copy.

The unreadable directory row of check.test.ts uses isRoot and one assertion.
src/cli is a link to src/runtime/cli. tsc walked the link first and then
skipped src/runtime/cli as a directory that it had seen, so it read
html_pages.bind.ts at src/cli/, where ../../codegen does not exist.
…ge search after --check

bun-types.test.ts lists every bindgen schema. The schema of this PR is not
for users.

The second row of the unreadable directory test has no type error. The check
passes, and the run that follows reports the EACCES of the search.
names_file wrote the same steps by hand.

The comment on pagesOf in html.ts no longer names check_command.rs.

bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts has a row for a search that meets a directory
that cannot be read: the run reports the error and serves no page.

I re-reviewed the rebased branch and found no bugs; the two things I raised earlier (pages found before a walk error being dropped for --check, and the cwd+arg length check rejecting a fitting absolute path) are both addressed in the code now. Because this adds a new Rust module and bindgen binding on the bun <page> / bun --check entry path and the page-vs-pattern rule is a heuristic with a known remaining counterexample (st*r/), a human look at the design is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • html_pages.rs: Matched { pages, error } now keeps matched_paths on a walk error; check_command.rs consumes them and pages_of_from_js still throws like scanSync, so html.ts behavior is unchanged on error paths.
  • names_file: join_abs_string_buf_z_checked fails only when the joined result does not fit, and exists_at_type follows symlinks (test covers the symlink case).
  • Checked that boot_standalone never sets MainEntryPoint::Html, so dropping scanSync's standalone-graph walker from this path loses nothing.
  • src/tsconfig.json cli/** exclude: html_pages.bind.ts is the first .ts directly under runtime/cli, so it would otherwise be seen twice via the src/cli symlink.
Extended reasoning...

The branch adds src/runtime/cli/html_pages.rs and a bindgen schema html_pages.bind.ts, rewires src/js/internal/html.ts and check_command.rs onto them, excludes the src/cli symlink in src/tsconfig.json, and adds table tests in check.test.ts and bun-serve-html-entry.test.ts. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the new syscall is one fstatat on a user-supplied path through a pooled path buffer. The rule (argument names a page when a file exists at that path and the pattern cannot match its own text) is a heuristic that the PR itself notes still misreads st*r/-style directories, and the author weighed but rejected a structural alternative (the VM recording which argv entry it resolved), which is a design call for a maintainer. Several coderabbit threads on html.ts were resolved by the author only, and the change is not mechanical, so approve is not warranted even though no defects were found.
