Problem

  • Bun.Transpiler.scanImports() throws on syntax that scan() and transformSync() accept. class C { accessor x = 1 } gives AggregateError: Failed to scan imports (Expected ";" but found "x").
  • With emitDecoratorMetadata and trimUnusedImports it drops an import that the output keeps.
  • Cause: ParserOptions::init(jsx, loader) (src/js_parser/parse/parse_entry.rs:365) leaves features.standard_decorators at false, and scan_imports never set it. bun repl passes a constant for useDefineForClassFields.

Fix

  • ParserOptions::init takes a required TsconfigOptions: the two decorator options and useDefineForClassFields. A caller that omits them does not compile.
  • scan_imports passes its tsconfig. The scan pass marks a decorated member's type as used. bun repl passes the root tsconfig's useDefineForClassFields.
  • Verified: test/bundler/transpiler/transpiler.test.js (49 new tests, 35 fail on main), test/js/bun/repl/repl.test.ts (2 new, 1 fails on main), the decorator and snapshot suites.
  • Self-reviewed: 6 concerns raised, 6 addressed.

Background

  • Bun parses TC39 decorators by default, and TypeScript's legacy grammar when the tsconfig sets experimentalDecorators or emitDecoratorMetadata. accessor fields are TC39.
  • scanImports runs only the parse pass: no symbols, imports tracked by name.
  • Considered a helper per call site (Derive decorator options from tsconfig in scanImports and the REPL #33384): bun pm diff copied the formula. A parser default compiles when a caller forgets its tsconfig.

Downsides

  • scanImports with ts or tsx and no experimentalDecorators now rejects @dec()() class C {}, as scan() does. bun repl under useDefineForClassFields: false now assigns class fields, as bun run does.
  • With emitDecoratorMetadata and trimUnusedImports, a shadowed type name keeps its import where scan() drops it (4 of 36 shapes).
  • js and jsx scans run 10 more instructions per class member or parameter (+0.75%).
Notes

Also fixed. @dec class C {} with the js and jsx loaders gave Unexpected @ from scanImports.

What each producer of parser options states now

Producer Value Behaviour
Transpiler::parse (bundler/transpiler.rs, a struct literal) its ParseOptions fields, through set_tsconfig same
bundler ParseTask the task's three values same
JSTranspiler::scan_imports the tsconfig of the instance fixed
bun repl (cli/repl.rs) legacy decorators, no metadata, and the useDefineForClassFields that the module loader uses class fields fixed
bun pm diff (cli/pm_diff_normalize.rs) legacy decorators for TypeScript, as its standard_decorators = !loader.is_typescript() did same
inline snapshot rewrite (test_runner/snapshot.rs) NONE, then the legacy grammar it has same
.snap file (snapshot.rs), HTML lazy export (bundle_v2.rs) NONE no class is parsed
parse_only_text (parse_entry.rs: bundler output, --banner, --footer) and print_for_coverage (sourcemap_jsc/CodeCoverage.rs: a // @bun file) NONE, then no decorator grammar: JavaScriptCore has none same

parse_only_text (#46021) and print_for_coverage (#46161) landed on main after this PR opened, each with the two-argument init. With the required argument, such a call does not compile until it states its options.

Measurements. Taken at e2db4d6, before the merge of main and before the REPL line. Release builds of the merge base 5866b5f13d and of this PR, in one build directory. Tools: llvm-size, llvm-nm -S, llvm-objdump 23, the execution log of qemu-x86_64 10.0.13 (-d in_asm,exec,nochain) summed per symbol, gdb breakpoint counters. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed, and perf_event_open returns ENOENT here.

  • scanImports against scan() on one instance: 0 of 400 cells differ (main: 200). The cells are 4 loaders, 4 tsconfig states, trimming on and off, 12 shapes (13 for ts and tsx).
  • Metadata shapes (ts, trimming, experimentalDecorators and emitDecoratorMetadata): 10 of 36 differ (main: 25). scanImports misses an import that scan() keeps in 1 shape (main: 23, NestJS and Angular constructor injection among them). That shape uses a decorator before its import, and it is the same on main. The other 9: a shadowed or redeclared name keeps its import (5), scan() throws "Foo" has already been declared (1), ./dec is reported for a declare, abstract or overload member (3).
  • Release text: 106,357,577 to 106,355,017 bytes (-2,560). data and bss: no change.
  • Per symbol (llvm-nm -S): Options::init +86, TranspilerPrototype__scanImports +96, skip_type_script_type_with_opts::<true> of the TypeScript scan pass +29, pm_diff_normalize::parse_js -16, Transpiler::parse_maybe_return_file_only_allow_shared_buffer::<false, false> -21, P<true, true>::find_symbol_with_record_usage -3,230 (the scan pass no longer instantiates it). No change: the four P::init, both _scan_imports, parse_worker::get_ast, Repl::transform_for_repl, FunctionIdentities::of_text, and skip_type_script_type_with_opts of the full parse (0 differing instructions).
  • bun run of one module: 513 to 512 instructions executed in Transpiler::parse_maybe_return_file_only_allow_shared_buffer. set_tsconfig has no symbol: it is inlined. bun build of one module: 604 to 604 in parse_worker::get_ast.
  • Runtime transpiler cache: 0 of 18 cache files differ (diff -r; js, jsx, ts, tsx under no tsconfig, experimentalDecorators, and both options). EXPECTED_VERSION stays 35.
  • Per scanImports call (gdb, calls 51 to 53): 75 to 75 allocator calls and 0 to 0 syscalls on bench/scanner/remix-route.ts (tsx, no tsconfig). With emitDecoratorMetadata and 100 decorated methods: 1,296 to 1,302, for the two imports it now returns. Calls of find_symbol in the scan pass: 0.
  • Classes with no decorator (50 classes, 10 methods each, 3 parameters each), parser instructions per call: js 2,665,888 to 2,685,911 (+20,023, 10.0 per member or parameter). ts 2,914,526 to 2,914,547 (+21).
  • bun repl (no tsconfig, and both decorator options) and bun pm diff (7 file pairs): the output is byte-identical on both builds.
  • Since then: the REPL line reads one field of vm.transpiler.options per input where it passed a constant. No allocation, no branch. Not measured again.

The scan pass and a shadowed name. With trimUnusedImports, scanImports on main keeps ./foo for import { Foo } from "./foo"; function f() { const Foo = 1; return Foo; }, and scan() drops it. The same holds for a parameter, a local class and a catch binding. A type name in decorator metadata now follows that rule. scanImports does not drop an import that scan() keeps.

Not fixed here

Found on the way, separate

Other open PRs on these lines. #40405 moves the ParserOptions::init call of scan_imports. #40405 and #38719 each carry { jsx, experimental_decorators, emit_decorator_metadata, use_define_for_class_fields }. TsconfigOptions is the parser's view of the last three. #43321 makes experimental_decorators an Option<bool>: one line in scan_imports. #42433 and #37601 edit JSTranspiler.rs.

Before the merge. Update the branch and let CI run. A caller of ParserOptions::init with two arguments that lands on main after the last CI run here merges without a text conflict and breaks the build of main. That happened twice while this PR was open (see above), and this repository has no merge queue.

Question for a maintainer. ParserOptions::init has taken (jsx, loader) since 2021, and this PR adds a required third argument to a shared constructor. If you prefer the signature change alone first, with no behaviour change, I split it.

Self-review. The first version of this branch also changed the decorator grammar of bun repl, bun pm diff and the inline snapshot rewrite, and it fixed the panic above. A review found that the panic fix made a TypeScript parse quadratic and that bun pm diff in the TC39 grammar hid a changed parameter decorator. Both parts are out of this PR. The review also asked for useDefineForClassFields in the required argument, for the split, and for the #43321 note above.

Supersedes #33384, which a stale sweep closed. Its formula helper became set_tsconfig, and its tests are the base of the new table.

no test proof · iteration 2 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/repl/repl.test.ts

`Bun.Transpiler.scanImports()` threw on an `accessor` field with every loader
and on a decorator with the `js` and `jsx` loaders, where `scan()` and
`transformSync()` parse the same source. For TypeScript it parsed decorators
with the legacy grammar when the tsconfig did not ask for it. With
`emitDecoratorMetadata` and `trimUnusedImports` it dropped an import that the
transpiled output keeps.

`ParserOptions::init(jsx, loader)` left the decorator grammar at a mode that
the runtime never uses, and each caller had to correct it. `scan_imports` did
not. `init` now takes a required `TsconfigOptions` argument: the two decorator
options and `useDefineForClassFields`. `Options::set_tsconfig` is the one home
of the formula. `Transpiler::parse` builds its options as a struct literal, so
it calls the setter.

`scan_imports` passes the loader of the call and the tsconfig of the instance.
The scan pass binds no symbols, so it marks the type name of a decorated
member as used by name. The full parse resolves it with `find_symbol`.

Every other caller states the value it had: `bun repl`, `bun pm diff`, the
inline snapshot rewrite and `FunctionIdentities` behave as before.

Walkthrough

Parser options now receive decorator and class-field settings through TsconfigOptions. Bundler and runtime call sites pass configuration or defaults. Tests cover decorator scanning, metadata-related imports, and REPL class-field behavior.

Status

Reproduced on bun 1.4.3 and on a build of main at 5866b5f13d:

const t = new Bun.Transpiler({ loader: "ts" });
t.scan(`import "./a"; class C { accessor x = 1 }`);        // imports: ./a
t.scanImports(`import "./a"; class C { accessor x = 1 }`); // AggregateError: Failed to scan imports
new Bun.Transpiler({ loader: "js" }).scanImports(`import "./a"; @dec class C {}`); // Unexpected @

With the debug build of this PR both calls return ./a. Of the 49 new tests in test/bundler/transpiler/transpiler.test.js, 35 fail on bun 1.4.3 and all pass with this PR.

bun repl in a directory whose tsconfig.json sets useDefineForClassFields: false:

class A { x: number }
Object.hasOwn(new A(), "x") // 1.4.3: true. This PR: false, as `bun a.ts` prints.

test/js/bun/repl/repl.test.ts has a test for both values. The false case fails on bun 1.4.3.

Before the merge: update the branch and let CI run. This PR adds a required argument to ParserOptions::init. A new caller with two arguments on main merges without a text conflict and breaks the build of main. #46021 and #46161 each added one while this PR was open. The branch has both as of 38afee6c84.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two call-site changes and ruled them out: the .snap file parse in src/runtime/test_runner/snapshot.rs now gets standard_decorators = true where the base had false, but a .snap file contains only exports[...] template-string assignments, so no class or decorator is ever parsed there; and scanImports with ts/tsx and no tsconfig now rejecting @ dec()() class C {} matches what scan() already does for the same input, so it is a consistency change rather than a new divergence.

Extended reasoning...

The PR adds a required TsconfigOptions argument to ParserOptions::init, centralizes the standard_decorators/emit_decorator_metadata/use_define_for_class_fields derivation in Options::set_tsconfig, updates nine call sites, and changes the scan-only pass in parse_skip_typescript.rs to mark metadata type names used via store_name_in_ref instead of find_symbol. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Two confirmed findings are posted inline (shadowed-name import retention in scanImports with emitDecoratorMetadata, and repl.rs hard-coding experimental_decorators without reading the project tsconfig), so a human should weigh those; the ruled-out items above are the additional checks performed.

Preserve define semantics for legacy-decorated fields.

When the REPL copies use_define_for_class_fields: true, lower_class still removes an initialized decorated field and emits this.field = initializer without checking that option. This can invoke an inherited setter and omit the own field, which violates useDefineForClassFields semantics.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve forward decorator-metadata imports during scan

When the metadata type appears before its import, store_name_in_ref finds no entry and records no pending use. The later import is inserted with used: false, so scanImports marks it unused and removes it when trimUnusedImports is enabled. An import declared before the type is retained because its map entry already exists.

The dotted metadata path has the same root cause. Apply the fix to the scan-pass usage bookkeeping so both metadata branches retain pending names.

The last automated review lists two findings outside the diff. Both are behaviour of main that this PR does not change.

Legacy-decorated field with an initializer (src/js_parser/p.rs:7391). The lowering of a legacy decorator moves the field to this.x = value in the constructor, for both values of useDefineForClassFields:

// experimentalDecorators: true, useDefineForClassFields: true, bun 1.4.3
class C extends B { @d x = 1; y = 2 }
// output: constructor() { super(...arguments); this.x = 1; }  y = 2;

Every parse does this (bun run, transformSync, the REPL). The REPL passed true before this PR, so its output for the default is the same. A change to that rule affects each project that uses experimentalDecorators, so it is not part of this PR.

A type name before its import. The scan pass has this limit for every identifier on main:

const t = new Bun.Transpiler({ loader: "ts", trimUnusedImports: true });
const source = `console.log(foo);\nimport { foo } from "./foo";`;
t.scanImports(source); // []
t.scan(source).imports; // [{ path: "./foo", kind: "import-statement" }]

For the type of a decorated member, scan() drops the import too, so scanImports and scan() agree there. The PR body lists the limit under "Not fixed here". The general case needs its own change to the bookkeeping of the scan pass, with the cost per identifier measured.

print_for_coverage landed on main with the two-argument ParserOptions::init.
It parses JavaScript that JavaScriptCore runs as written, so it keeps the
grammar it had.
