bun test --coverage did not list a line whose only code is a brace of an object literal. A function that never ran had gaps in its uncovered lines, and LF missed lines that run.

Before and after

The number is how often the line ran. - is a line that is not listed.

main  here
   1     1 | export const never = () =>
   -     0 |   ({
   0     0 |     z: 1,
   -     0 |   });
   1     1 | const list = [
   -     1 |   {
   1     1 |     one: 1,
   -     1 |   },
   1     1 | ];
   1     1 | for (const item of list) {
   2     2 |   twice(item.one ?? 0);
   -     - | }

The cause and the fix

Coverage lists a line if the source map has code on it. The printer maps three kinds of brace: of a block, of a class body and of an object literal. Only the last is code. The { of a loop body shares a line with a header that runs once, and after a return JSC has the } in a basic block of its own that never runs. Coverage sees a character and cannot tell the three apart, so since #45677 no brace counted.

The printer can tell. bun test --coverage already sets code_coverage in the options of the transpiler, and nothing read it. With it, the printer marks the mappings of the two braces of an object literal, and coverage counts a brace that is marked. Every mapping is as it is without coverage.

The marks are a list of positions at the end of the InternalSourceMap, so they go where it goes: to the table of source maps, and into the transpiler cache. The flag is in the key of the cache, since the blob differs. Without the flag the blob is the same as before, and has no marks: when node:inspector turns the profiler on, no brace is listed, as on main.

A // @bun file is not printed when it is loaded. With --coverage it is parsed and printed, only for the marks. JSC compiles the file as it is written, so the original positions of the marked mappings are its braces. A file that Bun's parser rejects, as it does function f(a, a) {}, is listed as on main.

Four positions were wrong, in every source map, with or without coverage.

  • The AST had no position for else, so the printer gave it the one of the statement after it. With else and { on two lines, the line of the { was listed and the line of the else was not. S.If now has else_loc.
  • An object pattern had no position for its }. Bun turns a var pattern in a block into an assignment, whose { was mapped and whose } was not. B.Object now has close_brace_loc.
  • The name of an async method was mapped before the space in front of it was printed, so the space had the mapping. It is now in the order esbuild has.
  • What is in an object or an array from --define had the position it has in the text of the define, which the printer took for a position in the file. It now has none, and the value has the position of the name it replaces.

What changes

More lines are listed, so % Lines, LF, LH and the list of uncovered lines move, and with them the result of a coverageThreshold.

A bug, now right

Case main this PR
A line with only the start of an object literal: {, ({, ? {, : {, ...{, } = { after a type not listed the count of the object
A line with only the end of one: }, },, };, }); not listed the count of the object
The two above in a // @bun file, or with coverageIgnoreSourcemaps. Without a source map every character counts, so there it is a brace alone on its line not listed the count of the object
A line with a brace of an object literal that ran more often than the rest of the line: for (const item of list) ({ and two items, or })) || [] after the callback of a map the count of the rest the count of the object
A line with only a brace of an object pattern in an assignment: the second and the fourth of the lines [, {, a: first,, },, ] = list; not listed listed, as the [ and the ] are on main
A line with only async and the name of a method, and the ( on the next not listed the count of the method
A line with only a brace of an object pattern that Bun turns into an assignment: var { in a block or in the head of a for, export const { in a namespace not listed listed
A line with only a name that --define replaces with an object not listed listed
A file with a name that --define replaces with an object or an array that is not empty lines at the start of the file are listed, comments too they are not
else on a line of its own and the { of its block on the next the line of the { is listed the line of the else is
else or } else at the end of a line and a statement that is not a block on the next the line of the else is not listed it has the count of the statement, as } else { has
else in a source map the position of the statement after it its own
The if of else if in a source map no mapping: it has the position that else took its own position
The name of an async method in a source map the space before it has the mapping the name has
The } of an object pattern that Bun turns into an assignment, in a source map no mapping its own position
What is in an object or an array from --define, in a source map a position at the start of the file no mapping

A bug, still a bug in another way

Case main this PR
A line with only a brace of an object literal in the test of a case that is compared and does not match: the second and the fourth of the lines case same(, {, a: 1,, }, ): not listed did not run, as the other three on main

Not a bug before, a bug now: none.

Right before and after, but different

Case main this PR
A // @bun file that bun test --coverage loads is not parsed is parsed and printed once

The cost

Instructions in user space, release builds from CI of 55cce26 and of 2d6d445, the main it is merged with. The least of 5 runs, with useJIT=0, useConcurrentGC=0 and no transpiler cache. The copy is a copy of the binary of main.

Nothing but loading: one test that calls one function bun test --coverage The copy bun test The copy
400 files, 3.3 MB +1.06% +0.05% +0.23% +0.01%

One file, 15 MB, with no object literal and no else -0.88% -0.71% -0.33% -0.33%

Each function of the first three has two object literals and an else in its 14 lines.

A // @bun file is parsed and printed where it was only scanned: the same functions in one of 15.6 MB are +76% with --coverage. With bun test they are -0.88%, and the copy -0.89%.

bun test --coverage that loads one // @bun file, cef2f35, the least of 7 runs main Here

0.5 MB 10 ms, 25 MB 20 ms, 40 MB
15.6 MB, in node_modules, which coverage leaves out 270 ms, 127 MB 270 ms, 131 MB

With 40 tests that parse and transpile a file of 77 KB with that bundle, it is +4.5% of the instructions.

Tests

  • braces.ts in source-positions-corpus.ts, in the six variants of every program there: object literals, and next to them the braces that stay unlisted, of blocks, bodies, a method in an object, a pattern, a switch, a class, and after a return. On main 31 of its 111 lines differ. One line of types.ts changes.
  • coverage.test.ts: one program as a // @bun file, as a // @bun file with a source map from bun build, and with coverageIgnoreSourcemaps. All three fail on main. The first also has a top-level await and an object in dead code.
  • coverage.test.ts: the same report from a second run, which takes the file from the transpiler cache and does not write the entry again.
  • coverage.test.ts: a file with a macro that returns objects and a name that --define replaces with one. Its own lines are listed and no other. On main four lines at its start are, and three of its own are not.
  • coverage.test.ts: an error from a using has the same position with and without --coverage.
  • coverage.test.ts: with the profiler turned on by node:inspector, a transpiled file and a // @bun file are listed as on main.
  • "maps a word to the same word" in source-positions.test.ts, over the source map of each kind of bundle, left out else. It no longer does, and fails on main in all five.
  • source-positions.test.ts decodes each source map once, where the bundle is made, and not in each test. With the programs of this PR, "maps a word to the same word" timed out in a debug build on a busy machine.
  • "maps finally and the { after it to the same" took any {. It now takes the one that follows that finally: with the position of the { after try in its place, it passed in all five and now fails in all five.
  • With each part of the change undone in turn, one of these fails: the mark of the { and of the }, the count of the marks in the blob, the option in the transpiler and in the print of a // @bun file, which of the two a file is taken for, which of the two positions of a mark each takes, a second run that does not take the entry from the cache, the position of the } where a pattern becomes an assignment, and the order of the space and the name of an async method.

Not in the PR

Six files with a { or a } on a line of its own: the block or the body of each kind of statement, function and class member, JSX, enum, namespace, decorators, parameter properties, patterns, import and export lists, type literals, and object literals after operators and keywords. TypeScript's parser says what each brace is. The same two builds:

More lines listed, each with a brace of an object literal Other changes A brace of an object literal on a line that is not listed A listed line with only other braces
Transpiled 104 the else above 0 0
The same as // @bun files 49 none 0 0

The test suites of five projects. The results of the tests are the same on both.

Lines More lines listed, each with a brace of an object literal More lines listed with else No longer listed A brace of an object literal on a line that is not listed A listed line with only other braces
valibot 7,166 227 0 0 0 0
zod 20,955 564 1 0 0 0
hono 9,782 156 0 0 0 0
date-fns 7,099 132 0 0 0 0
elysia 10,624 302 32 0 0 0

Of the lines that both list, one of valibot and one of elysia have another count, each after the callback of a map: })), 13 to 15, and })) || [] 3 to 5. date-fns has none. zod has 50 and hono 93, and 50 and 135 between two runs of main.

Walkthrough

The coverage scanner now classifies opening braces by context and tracks line comments across whitespace and line boundaries. Tests cover object, block, and comment-following brace cases in source-position counts and LCOV output.

Changes

Brace coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Contextual brace classification
src/sourcemap_jsc/CodeCoverage.rs
The scanner skips whitespace, tracks line-comment state and the preceding code unit, and counts { only after selected code units. It continues to exclude }.
Brace coverage regressions
test/js/bun/sourcemap/source-positions-corpus.ts, test/cli/test/coverage.test.ts
The source-position corpus records expected counts across object, type, control-flow, and class syntax. The LCOV test excludes block-opening braces after sentence-ending comments or numeric literals and includes the function line.

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked the redesigned path: the current_if.unwrap() at src/js_parser/parse/parse_stmt.rs:253 is unconditionally assigned a few lines above in the same iteration, so it is an invariant, not a user-reachable panic; every S::If constructor site (parser, both react_compiler codegen and lint converter) sets else_loc; both C++ callers of ByteRangeMapping__generate pass the new alreadyBundled argument; and code_coverage is in the runtime-transpiler hash with EXPECTED_VERSION bumped, so cached maps from older builds cannot be reused. A failed parse in print_for_coverage falls back to listing no braces, which matches the pre-PR behavior.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push replaces the previous-character brace heuristic in src/sourcemap_jsc/CodeCoverage.rs with printer-driven mappings (a new code_coverage printer flag, a re-parse-and-print path for // @ bun files, and a bool added to the ByteRangeMapping__generate C ABI), plus a new else_loc on S::If. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The items above were examined from the diff and ruled out; the remaining nit about else mapping coverage in the bundler word test is posted inline.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/js_printer/lib.rs — nit: the new else mapping is not checked for bundler output, because the source-map word test still skips else. src/js_printer/lib.rs:6624 now maps else to s.else_loc for every printer, including Bun.build, yet test/js/bun/sourcemap/source-positions.test.ts:472 keeps word === "else" with the comment that else has the position of what follows it, which this change makes false. Fix: drop the else exclusion and its comment so "maps a word to the same word" asserts the keyword position for every build variant, and keep the corpus 0|else lines for the coverage path. [also at: src/js_printer/lib.rs:6635 - nit: maintainers get no source-map test of the new else mapping, because the word check still exempts it with a comment that is now false. test/js/bun/sourcemap/source-positions.test.ts:471-472 says "else has the position of what follows it" and skips word === "else"; after lib.rs:6635 maps else to s.else_loc, a bundle's else maps to the word else, so the exemption only hides a regression of else_loc.]

    Why this was flagged

    The diff changes src/js_printer/lib.rs:6624 to self.add_source_mapping(s.else_loc.to_nullable().unwrap_or(no_block.loc)), so the else keyword maps to the else token of the source whenever the parser made the S::If (parse_stmt.rs:253 sets else_loc = p.lexer.loc() at the TElse token).…

    Verification: nit. Any Bun.build bundle containing else. src/js_printer/lib.rs:6635 now emits the else source mapping unconditionally, so else maps to its own keyword position in every printer, including the bundler. Yet test/js/bun/sourcemap/source-positions.test.ts:472 still skips word === "else", so the "maps a word to the same word" test never asserts else mapping for bundler output.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/js_printer/lib.rs — pre-existing: a using disposed inside an else { } block reports its error at the wrong source line, because that block's } gets no mapping while the if block's does. src/js_printer/lib.rs:6649 passes None as the close brace to print_block, whereas the yes branch at lib.rs:6600 passes Some(block.close_brace_loc). Fix: map the } of every S::Block the printer prints, so else blocks behave like if, do and case blocks; concretely pass Some(block.close_brace_loc) at lib.rs:6649. The PR description states the error map keeps the braces of blocks for using, which does not hold here.

    Why this was flagged

    A TypeScript module holds if (x) { ... } else { using t = { [Symbol.dispose]() { throw new Error("d"); } }; Object(t); } and a test calls it. JSC positions the disposal error at the } that closes the else block, as the PR's own test shows for a bare block (test/cli/test/coverage.test.ts:1262-1296 expects lib.ts:5:3, the block's }). The printer emits that } on its own generated line with no mapping: src/js_printer/lib.rs:6649 calls print_block(no_block.loc, ..., None), and print_block at lib.rs:2191-2195 only maps the brace when close_brace_loc is Some. The sibling yes branch at lib.rs:6597-6601 passes Some(block.close_brace_loc), and S::Block carries close_brace_loc (src/ast/s.rs:17). With the } line unmapped, the frame shows the previous statement's line or the untransformed generated line instead of the } line. This is the same on the base branch; the diff changes the neighbouring else mapping at lib.rs:6643 and the PR text claims the error map keeps block braces for using.

    Verification: pre-existing. A TS/transpiled module throws from a using disposal inside an else { ... } block. src/js_printer/lib.rs:6649 passes None for the close brace, while the if branch at lib.rs:6597-6601 passes Some(block.close_brace_loc). The frame keeps the generated (transpiled) line/column. Line 6649 is unchanged context in the PR's diff, so the base branch fails identically.
