Problem

  • import "path?v=2" and require("path?v=2") run the npm package path: node_modules/path, or the one auto-install fetches. Exit 0, no message. Node: Cannot find package 'path?v=2'.
  • The builtin table misses the full text. VirtualMachine::_resolve (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5130) then cuts the query and gives path to the resolver.
  • Preloads and macro: imports do the same with no query.

Fix

  • _resolve tests the name that the cut leaves. A builtin's name with a query is module-not-found, as in Node.
  • Preloads (--preload, bunfig, Worker) and macro: imports give a builtin's name to the module loader, which loads the builtin.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/resolve/import-query.test.ts, test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js, test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts (16 new tests that fail on main). Also the resolve, plugin and module suites.

Background

  • A builtin's name is a key of the alias table (src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs): path, node:fs, bun:sqlite, replaced packages (ws).
  • Bun cuts a ?query from a specifier before it resolves it.
  • Considered a resolver rule: a lookup for each bare import, and a preload needs the builtin where a query needs not-found. No cut for bare names (resolver: reject ?query on a bare package root that resolves via node_modules #36275) breaks pkg?v=1.

Downsides

  • The resolver's file for a builtin's name (node_modules, tsconfig paths, NODE_PATH) is no longer reached: not found with a query, the builtin for a preload.
  • This includes replaced packages: ws?x loaded the installed ws, and --preload ws ran it. A maintainer must rule (Notes).
  • Cost: 187 instructions fewer per resolve with no query, 9 more with one. Binary text: no change.
Notes

Origin. Found by inspection, from the "Still open" line of #44879. There is no user report. The silent case needs no node_modules up the tree (auto-install is on there), or a file that the resolver has for the builtin's name. With a node_modules and no such file, main already gives Node's error for the query, and --preload path fails with preload not found "path".

What a builtin's name is. A key of the alias table, or an internal/ module under --expose-internals. This is what a bare import consults. It is 19 names wider than module.isBuiltin(): the replaced packages (node-fetch, isomorphic-fetch, @vercel/fetch, utf-8-validate, abort-controller, abort-controller/polyfill, ws/lib/websocket, next/dist/compiled/*), ffi, bun:app, and the gated internal/* keys and bun:internal-for-testing.

Rows, against a loopback registry (main is e655c58):

Input main this PR Node v26.3.0
import "path?v=2", no node_modules asks the registry for path, runs it, exit 0 no request, Cannot find package 'path?v=2' ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND
require("path?v=2"), node_modules/path installed runs the package MODULE_NOT_FOUND MODULE_NOT_FOUND
require("constants?x"), tsconfig baseUrl has constants.js runs that file MODULE_NOT_FOUND MODULE_NOT_FOUND
--preload path, no node_modules asks the registry for path, runs it loads the builtin -r path loads the builtin
--preload path, node_modules without path preload not found "path" loads the builtin loads the builtin
--preload bun:sqlite preload not found "bun:sqlite" loads the builtin n/a
Worker preload: ["util"] beside ./util.ts runs ./util.ts loads the builtin n/a
import { basename } from "macro:path" Macro "macro:path" not found, or the installed package the builtin, like with { type: "macro" } n/a
require("ws?x"), node_modules/ws installed runs the package MODULE_NOT_FOUND MODULE_NOT_FOUND
--preload ws, node_modules/ws installed runs the package loads Bun's ws -r ws runs the package
require("lodashy?v=1"), installed loads loads MODULE_NOT_FOUND

All 12 ways to name a module behave the same for the query rows: static import, export from, import(), require(), require.resolve(), createRequire(), import.meta.resolve(), Bun.resolveSync(), in the entry file and in an imported file, and bun -e.

Rulings for a maintainer. No maintainer has ruled on a ?query on a bare name.

  1. A replaced package with a query (ws?x, undici?x, node-fetch?x) is module-not-found, like a Node builtin. The docs said only "Bun matches the whole specifier". The other choice: not-found for Node and Bun builtins only, and a replaced name with a query stays with the resolver, as on main.
  2. A preload of a replaced package (--preload ws, -r abort-controller) loads Bun's module, as import "ws" does. Main and Node run the installed package.
  3. Worker preload: ["util"] beside ./util.ts ran the file, through the ./name arm of the entry-point resolver (bundler: reject a builtin entry point on every target, and resolve --external matches on entry points normally #39811). It now loads the builtin, as --preload util does, and as the documentation of the option says ("Equivalent to passing the --preload CLI argument"). preload: ["./util"] names the file.
  4. lodashy?v=1, a package that is no builtin, still loads, and a test pins it as the control. Node and bun build reject it, and resolver: reject ?query on a bare package root that resolves via node_modules #36275 proposed to reject it.

Measurements. Release (LTO) builds of main and of this branch, counted with gdb.

  • Alias::get calls per 100 require.resolve('./x.js'): 305 -> 204. Empty script: 4 -> 3. (gdb breakpoint counts, release builds. A debug build keeps one for the debug_assert!.)
  • Instructions per relative / bare resolve: 5,559 -> 5,372 / 14,783 -> 14,565. With a query: require.resolve('./x.js?v=1') 5,777 -> 5,786, import('./x.js?v=' + i) 5,682 -> 5,734. (gdb stepi over the 41st call of resolve_without_on_resolve, callees included. libc clock_gettime counts as one.)
  • load_node_modules entries: 100x require.resolve('path?v=2') 100 -> 0. --preload path 1 -> 0.
  • Alias rows that ask the registry: 0 of 84 query cells, 0 of 5 preload rows (main: 84, 5).
  • Extra Alias::get per preload entry: 1. Per Worker preload entry: 2 (the parent, then the worker). Per macro call: 0.
  • Per 100 require('path?v=2') with node_modules/path installed: resolver entries 100 -> 0, file syscalls (openat, getdents64) 9 -> 1.
  • Release binary text: 88,976,455 bytes on both (llvm-size). Two earlier builds of this branch were 1,280 and 1,024 bytes smaller than main, so the layout moves more than the change does. By function (nm -S): _resolve 1,917 -> 1,954, load_preloads 2,241 -> 2,284, WebWorker__create 8,120 -> 8,167, new is_builtin 103.
  • bench/module-loader import.mjs median: 740.8 -> 727.6 ms (noise floor 13.8 ms, 40 interleaved runs). require.js: 397.3 -> 404.3 ms (noise floor 11.9 ms, 20 interleaved runs).
  • perf, valgrind and strace are not in the container, so every count is from gdb. The numbers compare e655c58 with this branch before its last commit, which changes one argument in load_preloads.

Tests. The two tests that show that a preload loads the builtin use _tls_wrap, which warns when it loads. They do not run in a debug build, where node:tls takes seconds to load. The other 14 run in every build.

Deleted. The alias lookup inside _resolve. Its one caller does the same lookup first, so it never hit. _resolve is private now and a debug_assert! states what it expects.

Not changed. Open PRs own the first three. Nothing tracks the others.

Related PRs. Precedent for a name that Bun owns and that reached resolve_and_auto_install: #44492, #29719. #31216 added the node: test for preloads that this PR widens. Neighbours on the same lines: #44833 gives the alias lookup of the caller a cfg (alias_cfg()), and is_builtin must take the same cfg when the two meet. #40383 and #42620 edit the same files. #42491 adds a retry without the ?query to the bundler, which would accept path?v=2 in bun build.

macro:. This is the legacy spelling. The attribute form and bun build already loaded the builtin. The change is for a file that bun <file> runs.

… a preload, for a macro: import

A builtin alias with a query ("path?v=2") missed the builtin table on the
full text, lost its query in VirtualMachine::_resolve and went to the
resolver as "path": node_modules/path, or with auto-install the package
of that name in the registry. The name the cut leaves is now tested
against the table, and a builtin with a query is module-not-found, as in
Node.

--preload, --import, --require, bunfig preload, the Worker preload option
and macro:-prefixed imports handed a bare builtin name to the resolver
with no test. They now give it to the module loader, which loads the
builtin.
`bun --preload file://path` lost its scheme and went to the resolver as
`path`: node_modules/path, or the registry's package. What the strip
leaves is tested like what the ?query cut leaves, and is "preload not
found" (Node: ERR_INVALID_FILE_URL_HOST).

Tests: one spawn per test and no test.concurrent for the new preload and
query tests, so that a loaded machine does not push one past the default
timeout.
… test more sources of a name

- load_preloads does not refuse `file://path` any more. That strip hands
any bare name to the resolver, not only a builtin's.
- `_resolve` asserts in debug builds that its caller answered a builtin's
  name.
- `preload_is_builtin` becomes `preload_skips_resolver`: a `node:` name
that is no builtin skips the resolver too.
- `ModuleLoader__isBuiltin` is as it was.
- Tests: a Worker preload beside `./util.ts`, tsconfig `baseUrl` and
`paths`, a package and a file URL that still preload, and `_tls_wrap`,
whose warning shows that the builtin loads.
- Docs: a replaced specifier with a query does not resolve, and a preload
of one loads the built-in module.
…/util` for a Worker

`_tls_wrap` warns only when the builtin loads, so a preload that was
skipped fails the test. It is in one CLI row and in the Worker row,
because it loads `node:tls` and that takes seconds in a debug build.
A file:///C:/... preload does not resolve on Windows today.

Status

Reproduced. A registry stub on loopback records each request. In a directory with no node_modules, import "path?v=2", await import("path?v=2") and require("path?v=2") ask it for /path, download the tarball and run it, with exit code 0 (main at e655c58, and 1.4.3-canary.1). With node_modules/path installed, the same specifiers run that package. Node v26.3.0 reports Cannot find package 'path?v=2'.

Fix. This PR.

  • After the ?query cut, a builtin's name is module-not-found. Preloads and macro: imports give a builtin's name to the module loader.
  • 16 new tests fail on main and pass on this branch. 14 of them run in a debug build.
  • Self-reviewed: 25 concerns raised, 23 addressed. Not taken:
  • No tracking issue exists for the places that this PR does not change. The list is in the Notes of the PR body.
  • Review comments: the two test timeouts are gone, and a preload tests the name without file:// again, so file://node:fs loads as on main. The preload of a replaced package (--preload ws) is open for a maintainer.

Walkthrough

Builtin module resolution now rejects query-suffixed builtin specifiers. CLI and Worker preloads bypass resolver lookup for builtin names. Macro imports strip the macro: prefix before hardcoded alias lookup.

Builtin module resolution and preload

Layer / File(s) Summary
Builtin alias and query resolution

🟡 (optional) Users who preload a replaced npm package (--preload ws, -r abort-controller/polyfill, bunfig preload = ["undici"]) now get Bun's replacement module instead of the package they installed, silently. src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:213 makes preload_skips_resolver true for every alias-table key, including the 19 third-party replacement names, so src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:755 never calls resolve_and_auto_install and node_modules/ws is never read. Node -r ws runs the installed package; the base branch did too. Fix: limit the resolver skip to Node/Bun builtins (node_builtin keys, bun: keys, exposed internals) and keep replaced package names on the resolver path, at both src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:755 and src/jsc/web_worker.rs:331.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun --preload ws ./app.ts, bun -r abort-controller/polyfill ..., or bunfig preload = ["undici"] with the package installed in node_modules; this is the Node -r <pkg> migration pattern. On the base branch src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:753 only skipped the resolver for node: names, so the installed package resolved and ran. After the change HardcodedModule::Alias::has at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:207 is true for ws, undici, node-fetch, abort-controller/polyfill, utf-8-validate, next/dist/compiled/* (src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs:747-802), so preload_skips_resolver at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:213 returns true and src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:756 passes the raw name to JSModuleLoader::import, which loads Bun's replacement. A patched or pinned ws/undici the user deliberately installed is bypassed with no message; Node and base Bun ran it. Remedy: skip the resolver for node_builtin / bun: / exposed-internal names only, leaving replaced package names on the resolver path.

Verification: src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:206-208 is_builtin is HardcodedModule::Alias::has(name, Target::Bun, ..), and BUN_ALIAS_MAP includes the "Thirdparty packages we override" entries at src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs:747-802. src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:212-213 preload_skips_resolver returns true for those, so src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:755-756 hand the raw name to JSModuleLoader and node_modules/ws is never read.

Not changed. The Notes of the PR body list this row as ruling 2 for a maintainer.

The reason for the current choice: a preload of ws now loads the module that import "ws" loads in the same program. The documentation says that Bun loads its own module for these specifiers "even when the package is installed in node_modules", so the program does not use the installed ws, patched or not. With no node_modules, main asks the registry for ws for the preload, runs it, and then the program imports the module of Bun.

The other choice keeps a replaced name with the resolver, for a preload and for a ?query. It needs a way to tell a replaced package from a builtin, and the alias table has no such field today. It is a small follow-up if a maintainer prefers it.

…ests that load _tls_wrap

- `load_preloads` tests the name without `file://`, as it did for `node:`.
`file://node:fs` loads as before, and `file://path` is the builtin, not
  the package of that name.
- The two tests that show the load with `_tls_wrap` have no timeout. They
do not run in a debug build, where `node:tls` takes seconds to load.

🟡 nit (optional): Maintainers now carry two copies of the "is this name a builtin" predicate that can drift apart. The new is_builtin at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:206 and the existing ModuleLoader__isBuiltin at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:221 compute the same answer, one through the BUN_ALIAS_MAP hash lookup and one through the linear bun_aliases_get scan flagged "PERF" at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:171. Fix: have ModuleLoader__isBuiltin return is_builtin(str) so require.resolve.paths and Module._resolveLookupPaths share the single predicate; bun_aliases_get stays for its one remaining caller at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:4677, which needs the Alias value.

Why this was flagged

The diff adds is_builtin at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:206-209 as HardcodedModule::Alias::has(name, Target::Bun, Default::default()) || exposed_internal_tag(name).is_some(). The pre-existing C++ entry point ModuleLoader__isBuiltin at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:218-222 evaluates bun_aliases_get(str).is_some() || exposed_internal_tag(str).is_some(). bun_aliases_get at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:174-190 linearly scans BUN_ALIASES after the same stream_iter_alias_gated gate that Alias::get applies at src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs:928, and BUN_ALIAS_MAP at src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs:900 is built from the same BUN_ALIASES tables (line 830), so the two predicates are semantically identical today. No runtime behaviour differs; this is a duplicate-implementation concern under the repository's one-implementation rule, and the comment at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:171-172 already asks for the hash-map form that is_builtin now provides. Nothing on the base branch prevents it, because the base had only the scan-based predicate.

Verification: nit. The PR adds a second "is this name a builtin" predicate beside an existing one that gives the identical answer. New is_builtin at src/jsc/ModuleLoader.rs:206-209 looks up BUN_ALIAS_MAP; the unchanged ModuleLoader__isBuiltin at ModuleLoader.rs:218-222 uses bun_aliases_get, which linearly scans the same BUN_ALIASES tables. Nothing breaks today, so this is cleanup-grade.

🟡 nit (optional): The file://path preload test drops stderr and exitCode from its assertion, so a nonzero exit or a stray warning on that path goes unnoticed. test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:268-269 destructures only { stdout, requests } while every sibling test in the block asserts the full { stdout, stderr, exitCode, requests } object. Fix: assert the combined object with stderr: "" and exitCode: 0, as the --preload does not ask the registry test at :259 does, or state in a comment why those two fields cannot be asserted here.

Why this was flagged

The test at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:263-270 spawns bun --preload file://path main.js through the run helper, which returns { stdout, stderr, exitCode, requests }. Line 268 keeps only stdout and requests, and line 269 compares only those. If load_preloads at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:755 later regressed to print a warning to stderr or main.js exited nonzero after printing, the test still passes. The sibling tests at :248-252 and :259 assert stderr: "" and exitCode: 0; the base branch has none of these tests, and REVIEW.md asks for the combined { stdout, stderr, exitCode } object. No comment explains why the two fields are omitted.

Verification: nit. Trigger: any future regression on the --preload file://path path that prints to stderr or exits nonzero after "main ran" goes undetected by this test. The run helper at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:227-228 returns { stdout, stderr, exitCode, requests }, but the test at :268-269 keeps only const { stdout, requests } = await run(...).
