Stacked on #44837, which must merge first.

Problem

  • bun --preload node:does_not_exist main.ts prints only Error occurred loading entry point: JSError. bun test exits 1 with no output. A Worker closes with no error event.
  • The module loader throws before a load has a promise. load_preloads (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:811) returned the bare JSError tag and left the exception pending.

Fix

Background

Downsides

Notes

No user reported this. It came out of the review of #44705, which lets a plugin filter throw on this path. The outputs by version:

Input 1.3.13 1.4.2 main this branch
bun --preload node:does_not_exist main.js (also --import, --require, bunfig) error: preload not found "node:does_not_exist" Error occurred loading entry point: JSError same as 1.4.2 error: No such built-in module: node:does_not_exist
bun test --preload node:does_not_exist a.test.js b.test.js a.test.js:, then preload not found a.test.js: and nothing else, exit 1 same as 1.4.2 the error under each file, then 0 pass, 2 fail
new Worker(file, { preload: ["node:does_not_exist"] }) the constructor throws TypeError close with code 1, no error event same as 1.4.2 error event, then close
A later preload for which a plugin's onResolve answers a path that does not exist the hook is not asked error: ENOENT reading "/absent/from-onResolve.js" the tag error: Cannot find module '/absent/from-onResolve.js' from ''

What changes and what does not.

Behaviour that changes.

Sites that stay on the error channel.

  • The two file resolver arms of load_preloads (jsc_hooks.rs:767-798): preload not found and <error> resolving preload. Under --hot they exit 1 (Fixes #15177 #15180). A question for a maintainer: should they be a rejected preload too? It is about 20 lines, and hot.test.ts (preload not found should exit with code 1 and not time out) then waits for a file that nothing watches.
  • VirtualMachine.rs:3487-3489: a Module.runMain override that returns a promise whose constructor getter throws still prints the tag. Node ignores the return value. node:module: check for an exception after wrapping a runMain override's return value #38113 is about that line.
  • VirtualMachine.rs:3474, :3524-3529 (HTML entry point), the macro entry point and the bun build --app config: no input found.

The two other arms that use the helper.

  • bun:main (VirtualMachine.rs:3520): reached in bun test by a Worker whose preload calls mock.module("bun:main", factory) with a factory that throws.
  • The untranspiled entry point (VirtualMachine.rs:3540): reached only with BUN_DISABLE_TRANSPILER=1. The test uses a Worker with an entry that is not a valid data: URL.

Alternatives.

Measurements. Release builds of #44837 and of this branch, same flags, same machine.

  • Four symbols differ: load_preloads +48 B, reload_entry_point +48 B, load_entry_point_for_test_runner -416 B, new JSModuleLoader::rejected_load 305 B. .text is 65,659,477 B in both. The stripped bun is 89,142,856 B in both (size -A, nm -S).
  • Instructions from a loader call's return to the next call, successful load (objdump, gdb stepi), before / after: preload 6 / 6, bun:main 14 / 14, untranspiled entry point 13 / 14, first test file 13 / 14, second test file 33 / 32. The difference of one is a movabs of a constant that the compiler moves across a branch.
  • Calls of the helper (one JSPromise cell each): 0 over 4 successful starts, 1 for each failing bun start, 1 for each failing test file (gdb hit counter).
  • load_preloads calls: 0 for bun main.ts before and after. One for each test file before and after.
  • onResolve calls for a later preload: 1 when it loads, 1 when it is refused.
  • BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1: 0 reports over 9 failing inputs.
  • Tests added: 21. Passing on main: 0. Passing on this branch: 21 on a release build, 19 on a debug build with 2 skipped.
  • The instruction and gdb counts are from the first build of this change, on bd599f5af9. The loader arms are the same in this branch.

Tests.

  • All tests are in preload-test.test.js and run one at a time. The file takes 3 s on a release build. On a debug build each process takes about a second to start, and a batch of them passes the 5 s timeout.
  • The two node:worker_threads tests are skipped on a debug build, where such a Worker takes about 4 s to start.
  • Also run on the debug build: plugins.test.ts (about a test file, is asked once about), worker.test.ts (preload), hot.test.ts (preload not found, should recover from errors), isolation.test.ts (preload), node-module-module.test.js (the Module.runMain block).

Found during this work, not fixed here. I did not find an issue for any of them.

  • A preload or entry file with a ? in its name: the loader reads the rest as a query. bun --preload './what?.js' main.js fails with Cannot find module, and runs what.js if that file exists. Node runs what?.js.
  • Debug builds only: debug_assert!(global.has_exception()) in Zig__GlobalObject__resolve (src/jsc/JSGlobalObject.rs:1458) fails when a Worker calls process.exit() inside onResolve. A release build closes the Worker with the exit code.
  • new Worker(url, { preload: ["./missing.ts"] }) throws TypeError: undefined from the constructor.
  • A ResolveMessage with no importer prints Cannot find module '<path>' from ''. It now shows for preloads, as it does for test files.
  • Under bun test, a Worker that ends on an uncaught error closes with code 0. Under bun run the code is 1.
  • With BUN_DISABLE_TRANSPILER=1, --preload is ignored.

`load_preloads` reads the length of the preload list once and ticks the
event loop while it waits for each preload. A hot reload that ran inside
that tick called `load_preloads` again, which cleared the list, and the
outer loop then indexed it: "index out of bounds: the len is 0 but the
index is 1". A first preload that saves a watched file while it
evaluates is enough.

`VirtualMachine::reload` now defers while `is_in_preload`, as it does
for a pending entry promise. The run loop starts the deferred reload
after the load.
`VirtualMachine::reload` panicked with "Failed to reload" on any error
from `reload_entry_point`. A preload that failed keeps the list of
preloads, so the next reload resolves them again, and a preload file
that is gone by then is such an error.

The reload now ends like a first start that fails the same way: it
prints `vm.log` (or the name of the error) and exits 1, through the
`entry_point_load_failed` of `Run::start`.
The module loader throws for a load before the load has a promise: the
specifier does not resolve, or a plugin hook for it throws, answers
what is not valid, or answers a promise that is still pending.
`load_preloads` returned the bare `JSError` tag for that and left the
exception pending. `bun run` printed "Error occurred loading entry
point: JSError", `bun test` exited 1 with no output and a Worker closed
with no 'error' event.

`load_preloads` now returns the preload's rejected promise, as it does
for a preload that throws while it evaluates. Every caller reports that
promise. The untranspiled entry point and `bun:main` take the same arm
through `JSModuleLoader::rejected_load`, and the test file arm from
#44473 uses it too.

Status: fix pushed, waiting for CI. Stacked on #44837.

Reproduced on main (9ed8d11b96) and on 1.4.2, with release builds on Linux x64:

  • bun --preload node:does_not_exist main.js prints only Error occurred loading entry point: JSError.
  • bun test --preload node:does_not_exist a.test.js b.test.js prints a.test.js: and exits 1.
  • new Worker(file, { preload: ["node:does_not_exist"] }) closes with code 1 and no error event.
  • On main only: a later preload for which a plugin's onResolve answers a path that does not exist prints the same JSError line.

PR: #44838

Walkthrough

Load failures in entry-point and preload paths now produce rejected promises. Reloads requested during preload processing are deferred. Entry-point reload errors are routed through a runtime hook to the CLI handler. New tests cover preload failures across runtime modes and hot-reload scenarios.

Changes

Preload and entry-point load handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rejected promises for load failures
src/jsc/JSModuleLoader.rs, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js
A shared helper creates handled rejected load promises. Entry-point, test-runner, and preload import failures use rejected promises. Tests cover missing and plugin-rejected preloads across runtime modes and workers.
Deferred reloads and error routing
src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js
Reloads during preload processing are deferred. Entry-point reload errors are sent through a registered runtime hook to the CLI handler. Hot-reload tests cover preload changes during reload attempts.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the fixed Bun.sleepSync(300) wait from the test.

The test depends on the reload arriving during a 300 ms busy wait. On a slow CI machine, the watcher can post the reload after second.js loads. In that case, the test no longer covers the deferred-reload path, and it can also fail intermittently. The test guidelines prohibit waiting for an arbitrary amount of time. Block in first.js until something observable confirms that the reload was queued. For example, poll for a marker that the watcher writes. If no such signal exists, document that the test is timing-dependent.

As per coding guidelines: "never wait for time to pass in tests. Always wait for the condition to be met instead of waiting for an arbitrary amount of time."

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the SAFETY claim at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:744 — every reload trigger (the HotReloadTask ctx in src/jsc/hot_reloader.rs:559 and the deferred re-run at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:4513) goes through VirtualMachine::reload, which now returns before touching vm.preload while is_in_preload, so the raw slice does not dangle; and the exit-0 outcome when an earlier preload's uncaughtException handler swallows a refused later preload, which matches Node and the PR's stated intent rather than a swallowed error.

Extended reasoning...

The change routes entry-point, bun:main, test-file and preload load refusals through one JSModuleLoader::rejected_load helper, adds an entry_point_load_failed hook that replaces a panic! on --hot reload failure, and defers hot reloads that land while preloads are loading; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Five confirmed findings are posted inline, so a human look is already signaled; this note only records what else was ruled out.

🟡 (optional) CI users of bun test --parallel --reporter=junit get no JUnit file at all when a preload is refused; main writes one with a (worker crashed) failure per file. src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:819 turns the refusal into a rejected promise, so each worker takes the Rejected arm at src/runtime/cli/test_command.rs:2949, which counts a fail but records no test case. With nothing recorded, write_to_file at test_command.rs:867 returns before writing. Fix: record a failing test case for a file whose load promise rejects, on the serial and worker paths alike, so the report names the file and the error; that also closes #44435. The PR lists this as a downside; the exit code is still 1 but the report consumers rely on is gone.

Why this was flagged

Run bun test --parallel=2 --reporter=junit --reporter-outfile=out.xml --preload node:does_not_exist a.test.js b.test.js. On main load_preloads returned Err(JSError), the worker hit handle_top_level_test_error_before_javascript_start (src/runtime/cli/test_command.rs:3077) and Global::exit(1); the coordinator treated that as a crash (src/runtime/cli/test/parallel/Coordinator.rs:630-637) and replay_test_records wrote a (worker crashed) failing testcase per file into out.xml. After this change src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:818-820 returns a rejected promise instead, so the worker's TestCommand::run reaches the Status::Rejected arm at src/runtime/cli/test_command.rs:2949-2988: it bumps summary().fail, and returns Ok with no record_test_case. JunitReporter::write_to_file (test_command.rs:866-869) returns early when contents.is_empty(), so out.xml is never created. The process still exits 1, but a CI step that uploads or requires the JUnit file now reports a missing artifact instead of two failures.

Verification: src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:816-819 turns the import_ptr Err into JSModuleLoader::rejected_load(...), so TestCommand::run takes the Status::Rejected arm at test_command.rs:2949-2988 and returns Ok(()). contents stays empty and write_to_file at test_command.rs:866-869 returns without creating the outfile. On base replay_test_records recorded a (worker crashed) testcase per file, so the JUnit file was written.

🟡 nit (optional): the deferral regression test passes vacuously whenever the watcher posts the reload later than the fixture's 300 ms sleep, so a future break of the is_in_preload guard can go unnoticed. The test only exercises the new arm at VirtualMachine.rs:4622 if the HotReloadTask runs in the same tick that fulfils first.js; if it lands while second.js is pending, the pre-existing Pending arm defers it and the expected output is identical. Fix: make the fixture hold the preload open until the reload has observably been posted (for example first.js awaits a signal written by the test after it sees first ran), or assert something only the new guard produces, so the test fails without the guard on every run. [also at: test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:446 - nit: maintainers get a regression test for the deferred-reload fix that can pass without ever exercising the deferral.]

Why this was flagged

The test at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:440-456 relies on Bun.sleepSync(300) in first.js so that the watcher thread posts the reload before the tick that evaluates first.js ends. load_preloads only ticks while a preload promise is Pending (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:846-850). If the watcher is slower than 300 ms (debug build, loaded CI), the HotReloadTask runs in the tick for second.js, where reload() already returns at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:4630-4632 because the pending promise is Pending, with or without the new is_in_preload check at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:4622. The expected stdout 'first ran\nsecond ran\nmain ran\nmain ran\n' is then produced on the base branch too, so the test cannot catch removal of the guard it was added for. No safeguard forces the reload into the first tick; the comment on the fixture names the timing dependence but does not bound it.

Verification: The test's own comment (test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:463-464) admits there is no observable signal and the 300 ms Bun.sleepSync is a timing guess. If the HotReloadTask lands while second.js's promise is Pending, the pre-existing arm at src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:4630-4633 sets hot_reload_deferred = true, so stdout is identical with or without the guard.

🟡 nit (optional): the ~21 new subprocess tests run serially, so this file now takes well past the ~10s budget on the debug/ASAN lane where each spawn is 10-100x slower. Every test under describe("a preload the module loader refuses") at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:254 spawns its own bun in its own tempDir and shares nothing, yet uses plain test/test.each. Fix: make the independent spawned-process tests concurrent (describe.concurrent on that block, or test.concurrent/test.concurrent.each), keeping only the --hot block serial if its watcher timing needs it.

Why this was flagged

test/CLAUDE.md requires test.concurrent/describe.concurrent when multiple tests in one file spawn processes, unless it is very difficult. The new block at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:254-421 holds about 17 tests (test.each at :268, :288, :334, :352 plus singles) that each call run() (:255) to spawn bunExe() in a fresh tempDir, with no shared state, and bun test with --parallel=2 at :352 spawns workers on top. The PR text itself says concurrent tests are 'Not done'. On the base branch the file had 4 spawning tests; after merging it has ~25 run one after another, so CI's default lane spends tens of seconds on this file and the debug+ASAN lane far more, where the repo's review rules say a correct but slow test still gets changes requested.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: whenever this file runs (every CI run, worst on the debug/ASAN lane). test/CLAUDE.md:22 states "Prefer concurrent tests over sequential tests". The new block at test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:254 uses plain test.each and test; every spawned case goes through run() (:255-266), which creates its own tempDir — no shared state between tests.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: Under bun test --hot, a save that lands while a test file's preloads load is now silently dropped until the next save; on the base a save after the preload settled in that tick reloaded at once. VirtualMachine.rs:4622-4624 sets hot_reload_deferred and returns, but the only consumer, report_exception_in_hot_reloaded_module_if_needed at :4512, is called solely from run_command.rs:1560-1568; test_command.rs:2300-2308 enables the same HotReloader with no equivalent call. Fix: run the deferred reload from the place load_preloads returns to (clear is_in_preload, then if hot_reload_deferred call reload) so every host of load_preloads, not only bun run, consumes the flag.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun test --hot (test_command.rs:2299-2308 installs HotReloader with VirtualMachine::reload as ctx) with any --preload; load_preloads (jsc_hooks.rs:701) runs for the first file and under --isolate for every file, ticking the loop at jsc_hooks.rs:850 between preloads. A file change posted by the watcher runs HotReloadTask::run (hot_reloader.rs:556-560) inside that tick; VirtualMachine.rs:4622 sees is_in_preload and sets hot_reload_deferred = true then returns. The dismissal cites run_command.rs:1560-1568 as the consumer, but grep shows report_exception_in_hot_reloaded_module_if_needed is only called from run_command.rs; test_command.rs never calls it and nothing in the test runner reads hot_reload_deferred. The next reload() at :4643 resets the flag to false without acting on the lost save. On the base, the same tick with the preload promise already fulfilled took the Fulfilled arm at :4640 and reloaded immediately. The remedy is to consume the flag where load_preloads' is_in_preload guard drops (jsc_hooks.rs:715-718) or in reload_entry_point after load_preloads returns.

Verification: pre-existing. VirtualMachine.rs:4622-4625 sets hot_reload_deferred and returns while is_in_preload; its only consumer (VirtualMachine.rs:4512-4514) is called solely from run_command.rs:1560-1568, never from test_command.rs:2299-2308, so under bun test --hot a save during load_preloads is parked until the next watcher event. The base either dropped the reload the same way or crashed.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a --hot session whose last load had a failing preload now exits 1 when a reload runs while a preload file is momentarily absent, e.g. mid atomic save. VirtualMachine.rs:4669-4672 sends every Err of reload_entry_point to entry_point_load_failed, which exits; the NotFound arm at jsc_hooks.rs:798 returns Err for a file a write-temp-then-rename save has just unlinked. Fix: on a reload, report an unresolvable preload like a rejected one and keep waiting with its path watched, so the next save reloads; the first-start exit that hot.test.ts pins can stay. Base panicked at the same site; the PR text measures it at 19 of 30 rename saves.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun --hot --preload ./first.js --preload ./second.js main.js where second.js threw or was refused on the last load, so load_preloads returned at jsc_hooks.rs:872 before the preload.clear() at jsc_hooks.rs:891 and the list is kept. The developer saves a preload with an editor that writes a temp file and renames it over the original. The watcher posts a HotReloadTask; Task::run (hot_reloader.rs:559) calls VirtualMachine::reload, which calls reload_entry_point while the file is unlinked. load_preloads hits ResolveResultUnion::NotFound at jsc_hooks.rs:785-798, logs preload not found and returns Err(ModuleNotFound). The new arm at VirtualMachine.rs:4669-4672 calls hooks.entry_point_load_failed (run_command.rs:1728): it prints the log and calls exit_with_unhandled_note (run_command.rs:1708), ending the process with exit code 1. The developer loses the hot session and must restart. The base branch reached panic!("Failed to reload") at the same line, so the termination is pre-existing; the PR turns it into an orderly exit.

Verification: pre-existing — acknowledged in diff: the PR description's "Downsides" section states "a save of another preload by rename can reload while that file is absent. With #44837 the process then exits 1 with preload not found (19 of 30 runs)", and the new test (test/cli/run/preload-test.test.js:481-491) pins exit 1. The base is strictly worse (panic), so merging does not regress it.
