The bundler (target bun), Linker::link and the concurrent runtime transpiler dropped the `bun:` prefix of every specifier the builtin table does not know. An import of `bun:x` then named the package `x`. The three sites now leave such a specifier as written. `bun:<name>` still resolves to `<name>` when `<name>` is a bare Node.js builtin name (`bun:fs`), because programs depend on that.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the dropped path.namespace = b"bun" assignment at all three rewrite sites: nothing downstream reads a bun namespace on an externalized import record (the printer and metafile use path.text, and the only namespace == "bun" comparison in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs normalizes plugin onResolve results), so leaving the default namespace is not a behavior change. I also looked at the no-log exit-0 outcome for a misspelled bun: name under --target=bun and ruled it out as pre-existing: the base code externalized those records silently too.
Extended reasoning...
The PR changes three import-record rewrite sites (bundler, legacy linker, runtime transpiler worker) to keep an unknown bun: specifier as written via a new Alias::bun_prefixed_builtin lookup in src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs, and bumps the transpiler cache version. It touches module resolution and auto-install reachability but no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The inline findings already flag user-visible regressions for bun:ws/bun:undici and installed packages imported through a bun: alias, plus the bundler still silently dropping side-effect-only unknown bun: imports, so a maintainer decision on the intended compatibility policy is needed before merge.

🟡 (optional) Programs that import an installed package through a bun: alias, such as import "bun:dotenv", stop at startup after upgrading with Cannot find package 'bun:dotenv', and nothing points them at the cause. This follows from the stated purpose: src/bundler/linker.rs:409-413 and src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs:1030 now leave any bun: name outside NODE_ALIAS_MAP as written, so the runtime resolver looks for a package literally named bun:dotenv. Fix: keep the specifier as written, but when a bun: name fails to resolve and its suffix is not a builtin, add a note: to the resolve error saying bun: names only Bun builtins and naming the suffix to import instead, so the 8 known public importers and private code like them can recover in one step.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: a program with a literal import x from "bun:dotenv" (or bun:yaml, bun:semver) and that package installed under node_modules, run with bun file.js or bundled with bun build --target=bun. On the base branch src/bundler/linker.rs:409 stripped the prefix unconditionally, so the import record became dotenv and the installed package loaded. After this change Alias::bun_prefixed_builtin at src/resolve_builtins/HardcodedModule.rs:945-953 returns None for dotenv (not a key in NODE_ALIAS_MAP), the record stays bun:dotenv, and the runtime resolver in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5099-5170 finds no alias and no node_modules entry, so the user sees Cannot find package 'bun:dotenv' imported from ... with no hint. The same happens at src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs:1030 and src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs:6681. The PR text rejects a hint line because ResolveMessage::fmt has none; the consequence is a hard startup failure for previously working programs, so a note on the error is the safeguard still missing.
Verification: Conflicts with stated purpose; acknowledged in diff: the PR description lists under "Downsides" that "A literal bun:x that loaded an installed package x now fails with Cannot find package 'bun:x'", and the new test in test/js/node/missing-module.test.js pins exactly this: node_modules/missing is installed and import("bun:missing") is asserted to yield ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND.

Not in this PR.
The error now names the specifier as the source wrote it (Cannot find package 'bun:dotenv'). Before, it named a package that the source did not write.
A note: line is new user-facing text in a path that has none today. ResolveMessage::fmt returns only the message, and its two callers in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs build a Msg without notes. #39744 and #39246 change the wording of the errors for unknown builtins in the same code.
The description lists this break under Downsides. If a maintainer wants the note here, I will add it.

The runtime transpiler can return cached output before this loop, and its cache key has no feature-flag state. Gate the bundler and linker paths, and make the runtime-transpiler cache flag-aware or otherwise prevent cached output from bypassing the gate.

Both names are builtins only with --experimental-stream-iter. Without the flag, `bun:stream/iter` became `stream/iter`, which is a file of the package `stream`. The rule for `bun:` + a bare Node.js name reads no flag, so a name that needs one is not kept.

I re-reviewed the latest push (a54a3aa) and found no new bugs; a maintainer should still decide on this one because it deliberately changes which bun: specifiers load at run time and in bundles.
What was reviewed:
- The stream/iter commit:
is_stream_iter_aliasis now a flag-free predicate shared bystream_iter_alias_gatedandbare_node_builtin, sobun:stream/iterstays as written with or without--experimental-stream-iter, and the cached transpiler output no longer depends on that flag. - The dropped
path.namespace = b"bun"at the three sites: no reader insrc/compares an import record's namespace tobun(the onlyb"bun"checks are thebun:wrap/bake runtime records and theonResolveplugin result), and the siblingAlias::getbranch never set it, so nothing changes downstream. stringsimports inlinker.rsandRuntimeTranspilerStore.rsstill have other callers; theEXPECTED_VERSIONbump matches the changed printed output.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces an unconditional bun: prefix strip at three import-record sites (bundler, main-thread linker, transpiler thread) with a shared Alias::bun_prefixed_builtin helper that keeps only bun: + bare Node builtin names, bumps the transpiler cache version, and adds bundler and subprocess tests covering ESM/CJS, CLI/API, require/import/dynamic import, the registry, bun test aliases, the cache, and plugins. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the security-relevant effect is that an unknown bun: name no longer triggers auto-install of the suffix package. The code is small and self-consistent, and the latest commit closes the stream/iter gap flagged earlier. Deferring rather than approving because the PR intentionally breaks existing user code (bun:dotenv-style imports of installed packages, and bun:ws/bun:undici), a product decision the author's own description hands to a maintainer, and two inline threads from earlier runs on exactly that point remain open with author replies only.
