What does this PR do?

Fixes #34069. Fixes #37968. Supersedes #40078, which found the cause.

  1. Bun.spawnSync stops pointing the VM at the loop it waits on.
  2. A child that nobody is going to wait for is ended and reaped, wherever that happens.
  3. What a direct stream's pull() throws is a failure whether or not it is an Error.
  4. The scopeguards of spawn_maybe_sync are RAII types.

2 to 4 came out of the debug assert that 1 adds and out of review.

1. spawnSync and the VM's loop

Bun.spawnSync waits on an event loop of its own. For the length of the call it also pointed vm.event_loop_handle at that loop, so everything that finds its loop through the VM found the wrong one. The only other code that runs in there is a garbage collection's finalizers:

A finalizer that did it on and then
releases a FilePoll or KeepAlive (an earlier test file's process.stderr, napi_unref_threadsafe_function) spawnSync's loop that loop's num_polls drifts down, and it is reused for the life of the process. Once the drift cancels the polls of a later call, the tick returns without polling: that call spins at 100% CPU until its timeout, or forever without one, and loses the child's output (#34069). The thread's loop keeps the ref, so the process never exits
unregisters a FilePoll spawnSync's epoll the thread's epoll keeps the entry. For a dup of stderr the open file never goes away, so the next dup to get that number fails with EEXIST: file already exists, epoll_ctl (#37968)
takes a KeepAlive (napi_queue_async_work from a NAPI_EXPERIMENTAL finalizer) spawnSync's loop its completion releases it on the thread's loop, which ends up a ref short: the process exits with work pending

In CI this is test/internal/build-toolchain-identity.test.ts failing with Cannot tell which …/current/clang this is after exactly 30,001 ms (its spawnSync timeout), in the --parallel batch only: 39 of the 85 main builds that completed since the test was added on September 20.

Cause. What the call makes for its child (the process poll, the stdout/stderr readers, the stdin writer) is already handed the jsc::EventLoop of spawnSync's loop, and EventLoopHandle::loop_() already answers with that loop. EventLoopHandle::as_event_loop_ctx() did not: it erased the EventLoop to its VM, and the ctx asked the VM for the loop. The swap existed to make that answer come out right.

Fix. prepare() no longer swaps vm.event_loop_handle on POSIX, so js_vm_ctx() and vm.uws_loop() always mean the thread's loop, for a release and for an acquire alike. What makes that possible is that a ctx made from spawnSync's EventLoop names its loop:

  • EventLoopCtx and AllocatorType get the third kind of loop a thread has, SpawnSync. AllocatorType is what a FilePoll already keeps in order to find its ctx again in deinit(). No new field anywhere.
  • EventLoop::event_loop_ctx() picks the kind from isolated_poster, the way js_poster() already does. Every other EventLoop gets the ctx it got before.
  • SubprocessPipeReader::loop_() was the one thing on the sync path that asked the VM. It uses the EventLoop it was given.
  • Process::close and PollerPosix::deinit released the waiter thread's KeepAlive through js_vm_ctx(). Not reachable for a sync call today, but it is the same mistake.
  • A call asserts in debug builds that it leaves nothing on the loop.

Windows keeps the swap. A libuv handle knows the loop it was made on and the counters there are always the thread's, so it does not have this bug.

Compared with #40078: it keeps the swap and has every owner record which loop was current when it took a counter, to resolve the loop from that at release. That cannot help a finalizer that takes a ref during the call (third row).

2. A child nobody is going to wait for

All of these are what happens when epoll_ctl or kevent fails (ENOSPC once fs.epoll.max_user_watches is used up, ENOMEM), or when setting up stdin throws. In each, the caller is told the child failed or is handed nothing at all, while the child ran on with nothing left to reap it.

Where Before Now
Bun.spawnSync, stdin writer cannot register threw at once: 3 fds, 2 registered polls and a running child left behind remembers the error, ends the child, goes through the same wait and finalize as every call, throws the same error
Bun.spawnSync, pidfd cannot register blocking wait4(): nothing serves the child's stdio and timeout does not apply, so a child that reads stdin or fills a pipe never exits child ended and reaped, error thrown
Bun.spawn, pidfd cannot register exited rejected for a child that was still running child ended and reaped first
Bun.spawn, stdin: "pipe" or a stream cannot be set up threw Out of memory, child left running throws the real error, child ended and reaped
Bun.spawn, buffer stdin writer cannot register sent killSignal, which the child may ignore, and its poll kept the parent alive SIGKILL
Bun.spawn with an onExit, neither the pidfd nor the buffer stdin writer can register onExit ran with the error already thrown and took the exception with it: Bun.spawn returned an empty value and the caller segfaulted (also in 1.4.3) the exit is reported first, then the error is thrown
bun run --parallel, bun run --filter, bun install scripts (tested), and the other callers of watch_or_reap: bun test --parallel workers, cron, git, the security scanner reported the script as failed and went on or exited, the script ran on as an orphan ended and reaped
Shell, pidfd cannot register await $`cmd` never settled exit code 1
Shell, stdio cannot start SIGTERM, then a zombie for the life of the parent ended and reaped

It is one function, Process::kill_and_reap(), called from on_wait_pid and from watch_or_reap's error branch, so no caller of watch_or_reap had to change.

  • A child that turns out to have ended by itself is reported with its own status and rusage, not with the error.
  • A child that was reaped already is left alone: its pid may be somebody else's.
  • A child that cannot be signalled (EPERM: it runs as another user by now) is not waited for, since that would block until it exits by itself. It is given up, which is what happened to every child before.
  • watch_or_reap closes the Process before it returns the error, so a caller's later kill() is a no-op instead of a signal to a recycled pid.

It is what already happens when pidfd_open itself fails with EMFILE (spawn-pidfd-emfile.test.ts): fail instead of blocking in wait4().

One change for the worse: a spawnSync child whose pidfd cannot register and that would have exited by itself without needing its stdio served used to be waited for, and the call returned normally. Unless it has already exited, it is ended and the call throws, like Bun.spawn.

3. What pull() throws

A direct stream is pulled from while a sink is attached to it. FileSink::assign_to_js_stream unwrapped the Exception cell it got back to the thrown value, and both of its callers then asked that value whether it was an error:

pull() { throw 42 } Before Now
Bun.write(file, stream) the promise stayed pending forever rejects with 42
Bun.spawn({ stdin: stream }) returned a Subprocess whose stdin never ended, so exited hung throws 42, child ended
pull() ends the worker (process.exit()) taken for a pump that ran to the end. A later catch-all threw, leaving the child, two sockets and the pidfd the same path as any other failure

It returns JsResult now. That made the has_exception() catch-all in spawn_maybe_sync unreachable (nothing between there and Writable::init runs JS), and its teardown was wrong anyway (kill is a no-op before the process is watched, and nothing can release a reader that was never started), so it is gone, with crate::Error::UnexpectedCreatingStdin.

4. RAII

  • SpawnSyncEventLoop::prepare() returns a guard whose Drop is what cleanup() was, and tick_with_timeout is a method of the guard. That removes two rare_data().spawn_sync_event_loop().expect("cached by …") lookups and their unsafe.
  • SpawnSyncEventLoop's methods take &self, with what changes in a Cell. A tick's callbacks reach the struct again (through the SpawnSync ctx, and on_uv_timer on Windows) while tick_with_timeout is on the stack, which &mut self did not allow for. The comments that explained how to stay clear of that are gone with it.
  • SpawnedTerminal and ReportUnwatchedExit replace the other two scopeguards.

Looked at and left

  • The waiter thread as the fallback when a pidfd cannot register, instead of ending the child. It would keep the child, its status and its rusage. It is not available for one process today: init() and reload_handlers() are gated on a process-wide sticky flag that also makes every later spawn skip pidfd_open, exits reach it through a process-wide SIGCHLD handler, rewatch_posix overwrites a live Poller::Fd without releasing it once the flag is on, and outside of Linux its loop is a sigwait on an empty mask. Ending the child would have to stay for macOS and FreeBSD, where no test could reach it. Worth its own PR.
  • The wait in kill_and_reap is a blocking wait4() on the JS thread. After a SIGKILL it is over at once, except for a child in uninterruptible sleep.
  • The Windows path where windows_configure_server fails after the child was started still leaves it running.
  • scopeguard in functions this does not touch (PipeReader::to_readable_stream, spawn_posix of bun run).

How did you verify your code works?

Every test below fails on main (c7b06d9, release) and passes here.

Test On main
spawnsync-isolated-event-loop.test.ts: what is finalized during spawnSync is released on the thread's loop exitedDueToTimeout: true, empty stdout
spawnSync.test.ts: a writer finalized during spawnSync leaves its fd number usable EEXIST: file already exists, epoll_ctl
napi.test.ts: async work queued by a finalizer during Bun.spawnSync keeps the event loop alive exits early, prints nothing
napi.test.ts: a threadsafe function unref'd by a finalizer during Bun.spawnSync lets go of the event loop never exits
spawn-pipe-start-error.test.ts: 16 cases, one or more for each row of the table in 2 children left, fds left, Out of memory, never returns, empty return value
spawn-stdin-readable-stream-edge-cases.test.ts: 6 cases of a direct stream that fails inside Bun.spawn child left, 3 fds left, or a Subprocess returned
bun-write.test.js: a direct stream whose pull() throws 42, "boom", { code: "E" }, undefined never settles

The GC tests are deterministic. They have to get a collection to run inside of the call and nowhere before it:

  • BUN_JSC_slowPathAllocsBetweenGCs=3 collects every third slow-path allocation.
  • The objects are dropped from the getter of maxBuffer, the last option spawnSync reads, so nothing is allocated between the drop and the part of the call that matters.
  • The getter calls Bun.gc(true) first, which empties every free list, so how many slow-path allocations follow does not depend on what the script did before. About 6 do (the tests start to fail at an interval of 7).
  • Each test asserts that the collection did run during the call, so none can pass by missing it.

Stress. Every changed test, held to 4 cores. Release, 6 at a time: 120 runs of each file (30 of napi.test.ts). Debug+ASAN, 3 at a time, which is what CI's --parallel=3 on 4 vCPUs does: 24 of each (6). Clean but for the flake described further down. These ran on the version before that flake's two-line fix, which itself was only measured as described there.

Also:

  • The CI failure itself: three garbage Bun.stderr.writer()s collected during a spawnSync, then the real toolIdentity() from scripts/build/tools.ts on a one-line /bin/sh script. main: Cannot tell which …/clang this is after 30,035 ms, 29,164 ms of it CPU. Here: 0.3 s.

  • The script from Bug: spawnSync never returns: child exit lost (child stays zombie), wait loop busy-spins at 100% CPU re-registering a finished pipe reader (macOS ARM64) #34069 (spawnsync-spin.test.mjs, unchanged): 8 copies, bun test --isolate --timeout 0, 3 such processes at once held to 4 cores, release builds, alternating between the two. main: wedged in 5 of 60. Here: 0 of 60.

  • 21 spawnSync variants (timeout with a grandchild holding the pipe, maxBuffer, large stdin with an early exit, ENOENT, bad cwd, aborted signals, extra fds, node:child_process) with pidfd, BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_FORCE_WAITER_THREAD, BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_DISABLE_MEMFD and BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_DISABLE_SPAWNSYNC_FAST_PATH, also in Workers, including terminate() during the call: the new assert holds.

  • No cost: 3,000 spawns of /bin/true with piped stdout and stderr, six interleaved runs each on the same 8 cores, Bun.spawnSync 387–405 µs on main and 388–402 µs here, Bun.spawn 395–410 µs and 391–410 µs.

  • bun run rust:check-all: 12 of 12 targets. Clippy is clean on the files touched.

  • 176 test files on a debug+ASAN build (spawn/, shell/, child_process/, io/, streams, workers, timers, process, terminal, cron, bun run, bun test --parallel): 156 clean. The other 20 were run again on this and on the previous head of this PR: they fail the same way on both (they need a non-root user, a network or FUSE, or a wall-clock bound does not hold on a loaded debug build), but for 4 timeouts in bun-write.test.js that pass 3 of 3 on both when run alone.

A flake this PR introduced on the way, and what it was. An intermediate version made Bun.spawn with a buffer stdin … releases the Subprocess, a test that is on main, report leakedWrappers: 1 about once in 100 runs under load. With main's copy of the file on release builds, 8 at a time on 4 cores: main 0 of 800, that version 5 of 800.

  • generateHeapSnapshotForDebugging() while the wrapper is retained: no incoming edge and no roots entry. As a control, a wrapper kept by its own pending activity shows an edge from StrongRootBlock.
  • The fixture then reads its own stack from /proc/self/mem. In all 28 captures (of 3,000 runs of bun-profile), two adjacent words hold the cell's address. The return addresses above them are the live chain that a top-level await's continuation runs under, and with it every Bun.gc() the fixture makes: TimerObjectInternals::fire, EventLoop::exit, VM::drainMicrotasks, MicrotaskQueue::drainImpl<true>, runInternalMicrotask. The two words are in the frame of runInternalMicrotask, which never writes them. Next to them are stale return addresses into Subprocess::on_process_exit (subprocess.rs:1216) and EventLoop::exit: they are callee-saved registers that EventLoop::exit pushed while on_process_exit held this_jsvalue, in an earlier turn of the loop that got to the same depth. Every later turn builds the same frames at the same addresses, so no number of collections from JS gets rid of them.
  • On a debug build, gdb says the same of another word: a hardware watchpoint on the cell's cellState shows it marked by SlotVisitor::appendJSCellOrAuxiliary from the conservative scan (Heap.cpp:3719), a breakpoint on ConservativeRoots::add finds one word of the 52,456 bytes scanned that points into the cell (cell+72, and genericAddPointer takes a pointer into the middle of a cell for one to the cell), and that word is in the frame of MicrotaskQueue::drainImpl<true>, which does not write it during the collection either.
  • What moved on_process_exit onto those slots: it is reached through Process::on_wait_pid, whose frame that version had grown by a (Status, Rusage) temporary for the error path.

kill_and_reap is #[cold] #[inline(never)] now and writes to the Rusage its caller already has. The fixture alone, 40 at a time on 4 cores, the three builds taking turns: that version 64 of 4,000, this PR 0 of 4,000, main 0 of 4,000. No test was changed for this.

Not verified: macOS, FreeBSD and Windows at run time, other than by CI. #37968's reproduction needs the reporter's repository and was not run; it is reproduced by its mechanism in the second test above.

Bun.spawnSync waits on a loop of its own, and for the length of the call it pointed vm.event_loop_handle at that loop. Everything that finds its loop through the VM then found the wrong one: a FilePoll or KeepAlive released by a finalizer, or a KeepAlive taken by one.

What the call makes for its child is handed the loop's EventLoop. The ctx made from that EventLoop now names its loop, so nothing needs the VM to be pointed anywhere.

Walkthrough

The PR adds a SpawnSync event-loop context and separates Unix and Windows loop-handle behavior. It updates subprocess cleanup and stream-error handling, and adds tests for process cleanup, event-loop polling, writer finalization, and Node-API finalizers.

Changes

SpawnSync event-loop ownership and subprocess behavior

EventLoopCtx now includes SpawnSync. Isolated loops provide their own context and allocator classification. A prepared-loop guard manages platform-specific state, and pipe readers select platform-specific native loops.
Subprocess setup and failure cleanup
src/runtime/api/bun/js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs, src/spawn/process.rs, src/runtime/shell/subproc.rs
Spawn setup retains errors while terminating or reaping children. Process watcher failures use kill-and-reap handling. Shell startup failures use the same cleanup path.
Stream setup and error propagation

Explanation

The POSIX loop-context change and regression tests address the lost child-exit notification in [#34069] and stale epoll entries in [#37968]. However, [#37968] also requires lazy process.stderr creation failures to be observable or catchable from JavaScript. The FileSink changes propagate direct-stream pull() failures; they do not establish that lazy process.stderr initialization failures reach JavaScript.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The loop-context changes and related regression tests support [#34069] and [#37968]. The PR also changes general asynchronous spawn and shell cleanup for child setup failures, and changes Bun.write() handling for direct-stream pull() failures. Those behaviors do not implement either issue's lost-exit or lazy-stderr epoll requirements.

A running child whose pidfd failed to register was reported as exited with that error and never reaped. Bun.spawnSync blocked in wait4() instead, where nothing serves the child's stdio and no timeout applies.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the waiter.disable() -> waiter.unref(ctx) swap in Process::close and PollerPosix::deinit (src/spawn/process.rs): disable left the KeepAlive at Done while unref leaves it Inactive, but both sites immediately detach or drop the poller, so nothing can ref_ it again and the counter stays balanced. The debug_assert added to SpawnSyncEventLoop::prepare is debug-only and reads counters the loop already owns, so it cannot change release behavior.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks how Bun.spawnSync's isolated event loop is identified on POSIX (new SpawnSync EventLoopCtx/AllocatorType kind, VM handle swap made Windows-only) and makes pidfd-registration failure SIGKILL and wait4 the child synchronously; it touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface. Three verified findings are posted inline and one further verified finding is unposted, so approval is not on the table; this note only records the additional sites examined and ruled out.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/api/bun/js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs — pre-existing: a Bun.spawnSync/Bun.spawn call with stdin: "pipe" whose writer cannot register still leaves its child running and never reaped, unlike the Buffer stdin path this PR fixes. The Writable::init Err arm at src/runtime/api/bun/js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs:1356-1419 closes fds and derefs the Subprocess but never signals the child, and try_kill is a no-op there because the poller is still Detached (src/spawn/process.rs:693). Fix: on every stdin-setup failure after a successful spawn (the Writable::init Err arm and the has_exception catch-all at :1483), SIGKILL the child by pid and reap it (wait(true)), as the new Buffer path now does at :1812-1822, so the comment at :2017 ("its stdin could not be set up and it was killed") becomes true for that arm too.

    Why this was flagged

A caller runs Bun.spawnSync({cmd: ["sleep", "1000"], stdin: "pipe"}) (or Bun.spawn with the same stdio) while epoll_ctl fails with ENOSPC (exhausted fs.epoll.max_user_watches, the condition the PR's own fixture injects). Writable::init at…

Verification: Pre-existing. Trigger: Bun.spawn/Bun.spawnSync with stdin: "pipe" when the writer's epoll_ctl ADD fails. The Err arm at src/runtime/api/bun/js_bun_spawn_bindings.rs:1359-1420 never sends a signal, and Process::kill is a no-op for Detached, so the child keeps running and is never reaped. The existing stdin-pipe case spawns true and cannot detect the running child.

… throws for a failure

- Process::kill_and_reap, called from on_wait_pid and watch_or_reap's error
branch, so bun run --parallel/--filter, install scripts and the shell get it
too. It leaves a reaped or unsignallable child alone, reports one that ended
by itself with its own status and rusage, and closes the Process after.
- Bun.spawn: report an unwatched exit before throwing (onExit took the pending
exception with it), SIGKILL instead of killSignal, the real error instead of
  "Out of memory".
- FileSink::assign_to_stream/pipe_stream return JsResult: a non-Error thrown by
a direct stream's pull() left Bun.write pending and Bun.spawn's child running.
- Shell: finish a command whose exit came with an error, reap one it gave up on.
- spawn_maybe_sync: RAII types instead of scopeguard. SpawnSyncEventLoop takes
&self and prepare() returns the guard that ticks.
- Tests: drop from the last option's getter so the GC lands inside the call, no
explicit timeout in the NAPI test.

On the finding in the review body (a stdin: "pipe" child is abandoned when its writer cannot register): confirmed for Bun.spawn and fixed in aae2448, the child is ended and reaped and the call throws the real error instead of Out of memory. Bun.spawnSync is not affected, stdin: "pipe" becomes ignore there. The has_exception() catch-all next to it turned out to be reachable (a direct stream whose pull() ends a worker) and to leak 3 fds: that failure goes through Writable::init's error path now and the catch-all is gone. The description has the rest.

From a poll callback the registration's ref is already the caller's to
release, and close() released it again while the status was still Running.
Only watch_or_reap's error return needs the close, where nothing registered.

Every test and fixture that ran a child with Bun.spawnSync now awaits an
asynchronous child through tests/fixtures/run-child.ts (Bun.spawn, output
read as text, exit awaited). The assertions are unchanged.

On Bun 1.4.2 a garbage collection inside a spawnSync call can leave the
call's private event loop miscounted; a later spawnSync in the same process
then misses its child's exit and spins until the test times out
(oven-sh/bun#34069, fixed after 1.4.2 by oven-sh/bun#44581). A
`bun test --parallel` worker runs many files in one process, so it hit this
on the Linux runner (#240). An asynchronous child never enters that loop.

* fix: take file locks with flock(2) instead of a flock child process

flock() in src/logins.ts ran Bun.spawnSync(["flock", ...]) with no
timeout. Bun 1.4.2 has oven-sh/bun#34069: a garbage collection
finalizer that runs during a spawnSync call releases its poll on the
call's private loop, the loop's poll count drifts, and a later
spawnSync call never sees its child exit. The test worker for
test/logins.test.ts hung that way in a lease and held CI until the job
timeout (#239). The upstream fix, oven-sh/bun#44581, is in no release.

flock() now calls flock(2) from libc.so.6 through bun:ffi on the same
descriptor, so the lock and the close-to-release behavior stay the
same for every caller. It retries on EINTR, returns null on
EWOULDBLOCK, and throws on any other errno. The options are typed as a
mode and a wait instead of flock(1) flags. The host no longer needs
the flock binary, so doctor drops its check and README names glibc
instead.

Fixes #239

* fix: use the typed flock options in the run-lock test

Bun 1.4.2's synchronous spawn waits on a process-wide isolated event
loop. A garbage collection during the call can finalize an earlier
object's poll there, for example a stdio writer from a test file that
`bun test --parallel` already discarded, and permanently lower that
loop's poll count. Every later spawnSync/execSync in the worker then
never reaps its child. It spins until the test times out, printing
"killed 1 dangling process", and its own `timeout` does not end it
(oven-sh/bun#43697, fixed by oven-sh/bun#44581 after 1.4.2). Shard 4
hit this in the fail-closed gate and no-source-string tests.

Add runCommand/commandOutput in scripts/shared/command.ts on top of
async Bun.spawn, which uses the thread's loop, and move every Workspace
synchronous spawn to it: test helpers, the no-source-string audit, and
the account visual capture scripts. The gate test now also fails if a
gate run times out rather than counting that as a non-zero exit.

…shard's step summary

Shard 7 of the Test run twice lost its tail to the same shape (run
38004627376 attempt 1 on d4dc2d4, run 37971386009 on c12e14a): inside
test/persistence-git-publication.test.ts a sync git spawn hangs until the
test deadline prints 'killed 1 dangling process', and from then on every
synchronous child spawn in the process (spawnSync, execSync, execFileSync)
times out with empty output while async spawns and in-process tests pass.
That is Bun 1.4.x's oven-sh/bun#34069: a GC finalizer that runs while
Bun.spawnSync waits drifts the runtime's private spawnSync loop for the life
of the process. Fixed upstream by oven-sh/bun#44581 (13a98b0, 2026-10-05), in
no release yet.

scripts/capture-test-log.ts recognises the signature (a dangling kill, then
at least three timed-out failures across at least two files and no other
kind of failure) and names it bun_spawnsync_poisoned in the step summary and
on stderr, with the Bun version and the upstream fix, so the shard's
remaining failures are read as a rerun and not as a test leak. It is a signal
only: nothing is resumed or retried. A single hung test with a dangling
child, timeouts with no killed child, timeouts confined to one file, or any
non-timeout failure after the kill are left for their own diagnosis. Both
real shard logs are named by the detector; the same shard's unrelated
recall-budget failure is not.

TODOS.md tracks the Bun bump: check the compare for 13a98b0, not the version
number. docs/TESTING.md describes the signal.

…no exit status fails loudly

Shard 7 of the Test workflow lost its tail three runs out of three at the
current composition (d4dc2d4 twice, c12e14a once), each time inside
test/persistence-git-publication.test.ts: a Bun.spawnSync git spun until the
deadline killed it, and from then on every synchronous child spawn in the
process timed out with empty output. That is Bun 1.4.x's oven-sh/bun#34069,
fixed upstream by oven-sh/bun#44581 (13a98b0) and in no release yet.

The file's git calls now run through Bun.spawn on the main loop (gitAsync,
gitFixtureAsync), removing the shard's densest run of spawnSync windows. The
synchronous helper stays for callers that cannot await; both throw on any
exit that is not 0, including a null exit code, which used to pass as success
and return '' (that is how the poisoned run became a bogus fixture and a
durability_not_enabled assertion). Both spawns pass the live process.env so a
test's PATH or GIT_* override reaches the child.

Probe: test/git-publication-helper.test.ts fails on the previous helper (the
signalled git returned '') and passes now.

The api lane comment tied leaving integration unisolated to the unit
lane soaking at four workers. Those are unrelated: the unit lane's
width rests on oven-sh/bun#44581, while integration stays out of
isolate mode because that machinery is what hangs the runner
(oven-sh/bun#39709, still open) and its files are spawn-heavy.
Restore the present tense and name the open issue as the gate.

Bun 1.4.0's Bun.spawnSync pointed the VM at its private wait loop for the length of
the call. A finalizer that ran during one call released its poll on that loop, the
cached loop's poll count drifted to zero, and a later call stopped polling for its
child: it spun past its own timeout until the 120 s batch deadline. That is how
Linux shard 1/4 batch 5 stalled inside release-version-sources.test.ts.
oven-sh/bun#44581 fixes it and first ships in Bun 1.4.3.

…hild exits (#4956) (#6986)

Squashed from #6986 for the 2.84.0 release train.

Linux CI shard 1/4 batch 5 kept hitting its 120 s batch deadline (#4956; runs 38146205183 and 38162375606). The batch did not stall after its tests passed: it stalled inside `tests/ci-workflows/release-version-sources.test.ts`, in a `Bun.spawnSync(..., { timeout: 15000 })` that never returned.
**Root cause (Bun 1.4.0, the CI test runner).** For the length of a call, `Bun.spawnSync` pointed the VM at its private wait loop. A finalizer that ran during the call (an earlier file's stdout/stderr sink, a stream reader) released its poll on that loop. The loop is cached for the life of the process, so its poll count drifted to zero. A later call then stopped polling for its child: the child became a zombie and the call spun at 100% CPU past its own `timeout`. In a multi-file `--isolate` process this depends on what earlier files left to finalize, which is why every file passed alone. Upstream fixed it in oven-sh/bun#44581, first released in Bun 1.4.3.
Evidence:
- **Hosted reproduction** (scratch branch, not part of this PR): running shard 1/4 batches 1–5 in sequence on Bun 1.4.0 stalled 8 of 252 batch-5 runs at the same test (run 38213764818). Each dump shows the same state:
  - the test process main thread in state R, symbolized as `spawn_maybe_sync` → `tick_with_timeout` → `tick_tasks_only`;
  - the CLI child a zombie;
  - its pidfd armed level-triggered in spawnSync's private epoll but never waited on.
- **Hosted A/B:** the same sequence on Bun 1.4.3 had 0 stalls in 280 batch-5 runs and no crash in 1,400 batches (run 38215466714). Running the 12-file batch alone never stalled in 450 runs (run 38213203939).
- **Local:** upstream's mechanism with one finalized poll hung past its own timeout in 10 of 12 runs on 1.4.0 and passed 12 of 12 on 1.4.3.
**Changes**
- `package.json` `testRunnerBun` 1.4.0 → 1.4.3. The shipped runtime (`dependencies.bun` 1.4.2) and Docker image are unchanged. The pin rationale is updated in the setup action, `ci.yml`, `Dockerfile`, `structure/runtime.md`, `CONTRIBUTING.md` and the docs-site contributing page, and the pin assertion in `install-scripts.test.ts` is updated.
- New `tests/ci-workflows/test-runner-spawnsync-finalizer.test.ts` (+ child fixture): reproduces the mechanism in a child of the test-runner Bun under a bounded async parent (10 s deadline, 3 s reap grace, settles even if exit or EOF never arrive). It fails on 1.4.0 (one writer: never returns; three writers: timeout with empty output) and passes on 1.4.3. Skipped on Windows, like upstream's case.

The production deploy contract row went silent until its 480 s bound in 12 of 48 runs through the tier's own entry on canary 9bd19c98e (#83): bun's main thread spun in user space with no syscall, its one pidfd naming a zombie git from a synchronous spawn (sources.ts's git ls-files, staging-loop.ts's git rev-parse). That canary is one commit before oven-sh/bun#44581 (13a98b0dbd), which closed oven-sh/bun#34069. Bun 1.4.3 carries it and #44279, which the canary pin was for; pinned to it (package.json, bun.lock), the row went silent in 0 of 96 runs. Armada's bootstrap Bun installs the same release, and release-config.test.ts holds the two equal. The anti-slop no-sync-spawn rule, its gate and isSpawnGoverned worked around the old Bun and go, as do the comments that cited the hang as live.

KINU_BUN_VERSION, core's and the daemon's copy in pc-agent/src/update.js, moves from 1.4.2 to 1.4.3, the release with oven-sh/bun#44581: on 1.4.2 a synchronous spawn could spin forever over a child that had exited, which the dropped no-sync-spawn rule guarded the CLI and daemon against. A machine on an older Bun gets 1.4.3 under KINU_HOME at its next launch; with KINU_INSTALL_BUN=0 it is refused. The protocol-2 fixture keeps the text that protocol shipped.
