DO NOT MERGE. Throwaway PR to watch the new "⏳ Running" reservation
comment (osac-test-infra#551 /
osac#977, both merged)
resolve into a real AI diagnosis end to end, covering both failure
classes the pipeline is meant to handle:

  • Build-stage failure (before provisioning): an unused "unicode"
    import in osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go breaks
go build. echo-adapter is built by VMaaS and CaaS but not by
BMaaS (confirmed by diffing each suite's own component list in
.github/workflows/e2e-*-full-install.yml), so this fails VMaaS's and
CaaS's "Build and load component images" step before either ever boots
    a cluster.
  • Test-stage failure (after provisioning): an always-false assertion
at the top of test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle, before any real
resource creation, fails BMaaS during actual test execution -- BMaaS
doesn't build echo-adapter, so its build stays intact and it reaches
    this point normally.

Both are obviously-deliberate, easily-revertible breaks (a clearly
commented unused import; an assert False with an explanatory message),
not real product regressions.

Closing this PR without merging once observed.

Summary

  • CI/build: Added an unused unicode import to echo-adapter/main.go, which causes the Go build to fail.
  • Tests: Added an always-false assertion to test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle, which fails before bare-metal resource creation.
  • Affected areas: CI and tests only. No API, controller, database, authentication, deployment, or documentation changes.
  • Compatibility: No runtime compatibility impact is expected. The intentional failures make the PR non-mergeable.
  • Validation: Test results and review finding counts are unavailable.

Risk classification

risk:ask — based on the intentional build and test failures and the stated need to observe diagnostics before closing the PR. The supplied labeling criteria do not define an exact mapping. risk:show was not selected because the changes block validation rather than only showing a runtime behavior.

DO NOT MERGE. Throwaway PR to watch the new "Reserve" comment (posted
when a suite starts) resolve into a real AI diagnosis end to end, now
that osac-test-infra#551/osac#977 are merged -- covering both failure
classes the pipeline is meant to handle:

- Build-stage failure (before provisioning): an unused "unicode" import
  in osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go breaks `go build`.
echo-adapter is built by VMaaS and CaaS but NOT by BMaaS (confirmed by
diffing each suite's own component list in .github/workflows/e2e-*-
full-install.yml), so this fails VMaaS's and CaaS's "Build and load
component images" step before either ever boots a cluster.
- Test-stage failure (after provisioning): an always-false assertion at
the top of test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle, before any real resource
creation, fails BMaaS during actual test execution -- BMaaS doesn't
build echo-adapter, so its build stays intact and it reaches this
  point normally.

Both are obviously-deliberate, easily-revertible breaks (a clearly
commented unused import; an assert False with an explanatory message),
not real product regressions. Close this PR without merging once observed.

Verified locally before committing:
- `go build ./cmd/echo-adapter/...` reproduces the exact intended
"unicode" imported and not used error.
- Diffed .github/workflows/e2e-{vmaas,bmaas,caas}-full-install.yml's own
containerfile lists to confirm echo-adapter's suite asymmetry.

❌ E2E CaaS Full Install -- AI Diagnosis | Category: UNKNOWN

The run failed during the "Build and load component images" step because an unused import ("unicode") intentionally added by the PR in osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go caused a fatal Go compiler error. This aborted the workflow during the build phase before any cluster provisioning or tests could execute.

To see the full run, check the workflow run.

**Causal chain**
  • The GitHub Actions workflow initiated the "Build and load component images" step to compile the PR's code.
  • During the container image build for the echo-adapter component, the Go compiler was executed.
  • The Go compiler encountered the unused "unicode" import and immediately failed.
  • The workflow step exited with an error, preventing the cluster from being provisioned and the E2E tests from running.
**Evidence**

GitHub Actions job log:

# github.com/osac-project/osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter

❌ E2E BMaaS Full Install -- AI Diagnosis | Category: TEST_FLAKE

The PR author intentionally injected a dummy assert False failure into the test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle test specifically to exercise the AI diagnostic pipeline, meaning there is no actual product bug or regression in this run.

To see the full run, check the workflow run.

**Causal chain**
  • The PR code changes included a hardcoded assert False statement at the very beginning of the test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle test function.
  • When the pytest E2E suite executed, it hit this statement immediately before attempting to create any real resources.
  • The test threw an AssertionError with the message "DUMMY FAILURE (NO-ISSUE)", causing the overall GitHub Actions workflow step to fail.
**Evidence**

junit.xml:

❌ E2E VMaaS Full Install -- AI Diagnosis | Category: UNKNOWN

The test run failed during the CI setup phase because the PR intentionally introduced an unused unicode import in osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go, causing the component image build to fail.

To see the full run, check the workflow run.

**Causal chain**
  • The PR modified osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go to add a dummy unicode import to exercise the CI pipeline.
  • The GitHub Actions workflow attempted to compile the code and build the osac-metering image during the "Build and load component images" step.
  • The go build command threw a fatal compiler error due to the unused import.
  • The build step immediately failed and exited, meaning the OSAC deployment was never completed and the pytest E2E suite never ran.
**Evidence**

Walkthrough

The pull request adds an unused Go import that breaks compilation and an unconditional assertion that stops the bare-metal lifecycle test before resource creation.

Changes

Go build failure

Layer / File(s) Summary
Echo adapter compilation
osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter/main.go
Adds an unused unicode import, causing the Go package to fail compilation.

Bare-metal test failure

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lifecycle test interruption
tests/e2e/bmaas/sanity/test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle.py
Adds an unconditional assertion before resource creation, so the lifecycle test fails immediately.

Change: Other

Suggested labels: risk:ask

Suggested reviewers: amito

Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to f6cb2

As it stands, this change cannot be shipped: the echo adapter no longer compiles, and the bare-metal lifecycle test fails immediately without exercising instance creation, provisioning, power transitions, or cleanup. Both edits are intentional test scaffolding and must be reverted before this change can be merged.

Remove the unused unicode import.

Go rejects unused imports during compilation. This makes osac-metering/adapters/cmd/echo-adapter fail type checking and blocks the build stage. Remove this import when the failure injection is no longer required.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the unconditional failure before merging.

assert False runs on every invocation, so test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle always fails before cli.create_baremetal_instance(...) on Line 103. The test never exercises resource creation, provisioning, power transitions, or deprovisioning. The PR objective identifies this as intentional, but this assertion must be removed or moved to a dedicated diagnostic test before merging.
