📑 Summary

Event-modeling frame IDs are documented as unique, but a repeated ID is currently accepted. With tf 01 ui A, tf 02 cmd B, rf 01 evt C, the relation intended for C can point back to A, leaving C disconnected. The diagram now rejects the duplicate ID before rendering and reports its line number.

Resolves #8287.

📏 Design Decisions

The diagram database validates the frame IDs when receiving a parsed model. It clears any previous model first, so a failed parse cannot leave an earlier diagram available for rendering. The check covers both time and reset frames without changing how valid frame references resolve.

📋 Tasks

  • 📖 Read the contribution guidelines.
  • 💻 Added a regression test. It failed on the unmodified diagram and passes with this change; 39 related tests pass.
  • 📓 Clarified the uniqueness requirement in the event-modeling guide.
  • 🦋 Added a patch changeset.

Validation: pnpm lint, tsc --noEmit -p packages/mermaid/tsconfig.json, and documentation spellcheck pass.

Summary

  • Reject duplicate IDs across Time Frames and Reset Frames before storing the new model.
  • Report the duplicate ID and its 1-based source line.
  • Clear the previous model before validation, so a failed parse does not leave stale state.
  • Preserve comments during parsing so line numbers match the original source.
  • Add regression tests for duplicate IDs, line reporting, and failed-parse state cleanup.
  • Document the unique-ID requirement and add a patch changeset.

Validation

The PR objectives report passing lint, TypeScript checks, documentation spellcheck, and 39 related tests.

Reject duplicate time/reset frame IDs before they can silently redirect relations. Include the duplicate ID and line in the error, a regression test, documentation, and a patch changeset.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Event Modeling AST assignment now rejects duplicate frame IDs and reports the duplicate ID and source line when available. Tests cover duplicates across regular and reset frames, including line reporting when a comment is present. Documentation and the patch changeset describe the validation.

setAst clears the stored AST before checking frame IDs. It throws an error for a duplicate and includes the source line when available. Tests cover duplicates across frame types, line reporting with comments, and the state after an error. Both documentation files and the changeset describe the validation.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md: Added a documentation paragraph to the Timeline section noting that reusing a number for another Time Frame or Reset Frame produces an error and that each frame must have its own number before being referenced with ->>.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/eventmodeling/db.ts: setAst now resets store.ast to undefined before storing the new AST, and iterates ast.frames to detect duplicate frame names, throwing an Error with the duplicate ID and the frame's 1-based $cstNode start line (computed as line + 1, or with no line info when $cstNode is absent) when a duplicate is found.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/eventmodeling/db.ts: The exported db object now includes preserveCommentsWhenParsing: true.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/eventmodeling/eventmodeling.spec.ts: Adds an import of mermaidAPI from ../../mermaidAPI.js.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve comments when parsing Event Modeling diagrams.

preprocessDiagram removes comment lines from code.cleaned. Event Modeling does not enable preserveCommentsWhenParsing, so setAst receives CST positions from comment-stripped text. A comment before a duplicate frame can make the reported line earlier than the user's source line.

The Event Modeling grammar supports %% comments as hidden terminals. Enable source-preserving parsing on the Event Modeling database.

Keep comments in Event Modeling parser input so duplicate-frame diagnostics use the author's original line numbers. Add a public-API regression test with a comment before the duplicate frame.

What's working well 🎉

  • Correctly identifies and fixes the actual root cause described in #8287 (a duplicate frame ID silently redirecting a relation to the first frame that has it), not just a symptom patch.
  • Nice bonus fix: setAst now clears store.ast = undefined before validating (db.ts:140), so a failed re-parse can't leave a stale, previously-successful diagram's AST behind for getState() to render. That's a real correctness improvement beyond what the linked issue asked for.
  • Good reuse of the existing preserveCommentsWhenParsing mechanism (already used by agentflow) instead of inventing something new for line-accurate error reporting.
  • The "comments precede a duplicate frame" test in eventmodeling.spec.ts exercises the fix through the full mermaidAPI.parse() path, not just the db unit — solid end-to-end coverage of the trickiest part of this change (line numbers staying correct with %% comments in the source).
  • Responded to CodeRabbit's automated review point about comment-preserving parsing rather than leaving it unaddressed.
  • Clean, well-scoped changeset and doc update, and a clear PR description that made this easy to review.

Things to address

🟡 [important] — docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md:71 was hand-edited, but that file's own banner says "THIS IS AN AUTOGENERATED FILE. DO NOT EDIT. Please edit the corresponding file in /packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md." The source file was correctly edited too (packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md:57), so content-wise this happens to match what pnpm --filter mermaid docs:build would regenerate — the build-docs CI check is green — but it would be great to drop the generated-file edit and let the build regenerate it instead. The generator does more than a verbatim copy (e.g. it duplicates each mermaid code block into a matching mermaid-example block), so hand-edits here are an easy way to introduce silent drift down the line.

💡 [suggestion] — Just flagging for awareness, not asking for a change in this PR: the linked issue's suggested fix location was the Langium validator (event-modeling-validator.ts), which already has an established pattern for this diagram (checkSourceFrameTypes + ValidationAcceptor). Doing the check in db.ts instead works well and is thoroughly tested here, and the validator route may not have even been viable without extra plumbing — packages/parser/src/parse.ts's parse() currently only surfaces lexerErrors/parserErrors, not the validation-registry diagnostics event-modeling-validator.ts produces, so routing through it would've been a bigger, cross-cutting change. Might be worth a follow-up issue if there's appetite to make Langium validation diagnostics reach the render pipeline for this diagram generally — but out of scope here.

🟢 [nit] — The regression test covers a duplicate between a tf and an rf frame (the trickier cross-kind case, since it proves the check isn't accidentally scoped to one frame kind), which is great, but a plain tf/tf duplicate case would round out the coverage. Not blocking.

Security

A dedicated pass for XSS/injection issues found nothing to flag. frame.name — the only new user-influenced value interpolated into a thrown Error message — is constrained by the grammar's EM_FID terminal (/\d{1,3}/, 1–3 digits only), so it can never carry markup or script content. The preserveCommentsWhenParsing addition doesn't introduce a new sink either: encodeEntities() is still applied uniformly to whichever source string is chosen in Diagram.ts, and the grammar's comment terminals are hidden, so comment text never reaches AST fields like frame.name.

Verdict

No blocking issues, and CI (lint, unit, e2e, argos, build-docs) is fully green. Leaving this as a COMMENT given the one 🟡 above — happy to see it land once that's addressed, or folded into a maintainer's regeneration pass at merge time. Thanks for the careful root-cause work here, especially catching the stale-AST edge case — nice fix!

Updated: the generated docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md is no longer part of the diff. The documentation change remains only in packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/eventmodeling.md, so the build/autofix process can regenerate the published copy. The source and regression tests are unchanged.

Hi @pentaoa,
Thanks for addressing the comments from the previous review.

[sisyphos-bot]
Verdict: APPROVE — 0 🔴 / 0 🟡 / 1 🟢 / 3 🎉

🎉 [praise] Every actionable point from the prior two reviews was handled, including the subtle CodeRabbit line-number issue — addressed with the proper existing preserveCommentsWhenParsing mechanism and a public-API regression test
that proves the line number is right when a comment precedes the duplicate.

🎉 [praise] The clear-AST-before-validate ordering prevents a rejected re-parse from leaving a stale diagram renderable — a real correctness improvement, and it's explicitly tested via getState() throwing afterward.

🎉 [praise] Clean handling of the generated-docs feedback: reverted the hand-edit, documented why, and let the build own the generated copy (verified no drift).

🟢 [nit] The tf/tf same-kind duplicate case (the prior reviewer's nit) is still uncovered. A one-liner would round out coverage, though it's low-risk since the Set check is kind-agnostic.

Security: dedicated XSS pass — clean. frame.name is the only user value in the new error string and is grammar-constrained to /\d{1,3}/ (digits only); comment terminals are hidden so comment text never reaches AST fields; the thrown
message is never interpolated into SVG (the error renderer uses a static D3 .text()). The pre-existing sanitized .html() label path is untouched. No XSS or injection issues identified.

Self-check: ✅ ≥1 praise · no duplicates · tally 0 🔴 / 0 🟡 / 1 🟢 / 3 🎉 · APPROVE matches (no open 🔴/🟡) · not a draft · not posted to GitHub per request

Summary for you: Yes — the previous review comments have been addressed. Both 🟡 items (CodeRabbit's comment-preservation line-number fix and ashishjain0512's generated-docs edit) are fully resolved and verified. The only thing left on
the table is a single non-blocking 🟢 nit (a tf/tf duplicate test). The PR looks ready to land.

Release notes:
### Minor Changes

- [#8303](mermaid-js/mermaid#8303) [`9140716`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9140716) Thanks [@filipsajdak](https://github.com/filipsajdak)! - feat: add the `elk.orientFeedbackEdges` option, enabled by default. With the ELK layout, an edge from a node that a subgraph feeds back into that subgraph is now routed downstream instead of around the subgraph. This changes the layout of existing ELK diagrams that contain such edges; set `elk.orientFeedbackEdges: false` to keep the previous routing.

- [#8250](mermaid-js/mermaid#8250) [`fd4f5f2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@fd4f5f2) Thanks [@kartben](https://github.com/kartben)! - feat: add a `bitOrder` option to packet diagrams. It defaults to `ascending`, which is the current
behaviour, and `descending` mirrors every row so it reads from that row's highest bit down to its
lowest. Fields are still declared lowest bit first and keep their width, so switching a diagram
between the two conventions only means changing `bitOrder`.

### Patch Changes

- [#8330](mermaid-js/mermaid#8330) [`50c9e55`](mermaid-js/mermaid@50c9e55) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: upgrade chevrotain to 13 so mermaid no longer pulls in vulnerable `lodash-es@4.17.23`

- [#8259](mermaid-js/mermaid#8259) [`4c90f5c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4c90f5c) Thanks [@afonsojanu](https://github.com/afonsojanu)! - fix(sequence): allow whitespace between an actor name and its `@{ ... }` config object

`participant Bob@{ "type" : "database" }` parsed fine, but adding a single space before the
config object (`participant Bob @{ "type" : "database" }`) failed with a confusing parse error,
even though the plain form without a config object tolerates trailing whitespace just fine.

- [#8339](mermaid-js/mermaid#8339) [`c7fa1a5`](mermaid-js/mermaid@c7fa1a5) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: keep ELK class-diagram cardinalities off namespace frames

- [#8334](mermaid-js/mermaid#8334) [`d67331d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@d67331d) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix(class): place cardinality labels beside their relation ends on dagre's sides with ELK, centre dagre's end labels, and stop clipping their text

- [#8344](mermaid-js/mermaid#8344) [`99a050b`](mermaid-js/mermaid@99a050b) Thanks [@pbrolin47](https://github.com/pbrolin47)! - fix: with the ELK layout, an edge label could sit up to 16px beside its edge instead of centred on it, when the edge's terminal jog was straightened after the label's position was computed. The label is now re-projected onto the straightened route

- [#8276](mermaid-js/mermaid#8276) [`3101c7d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3101c7d) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(error): show the actual error message in the error diagram

When a diagram fails to parse, the error diagram now draws the real error message below the
"Syntax error in text" headline, wrapped to at most four lines. Hosts that only show the SVG
(GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, exported images) no longer hide what actually went wrong, e.g. that the
flowchart edge limit was exceeded and `maxEdges` needs raising via `mermaid.initialize`.

- [#8296](mermaid-js/mermaid#8296) [`aa29345`](mermaid-js/mermaid@aa29345) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: preserve explicit source relations on event modeling reset frames

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

- [#8337](mermaid-js/mermaid#8337) [`147f343`](mermaid-js/mermaid@147f343) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: a flowchart that declares the same subgraph id more than once now renders as one merged subgraph with the ELK layout instead of producing NaN geometry. Classes and `view: collapsed` set on a repeated subgraph now apply to it, whichever declaration they follow.

- [#8203](mermaid-js/mermaid#8203) [`40ef7b4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@40ef7b4) Thanks [@MFA-G](https://github.com/MFA-G)! - perf(frontmatter): replace the quadratic front matter regex on hot paths

`frontMatterRegex` backtracks polynomially on whitespace-heavy input, so a
diagram well inside the default `maxTextSize` could stall parsing for over a
second. `detectType` and `extractFrontMatter` now use a linear scanner that
matches the regex result exactly, leaving no document stripped differently.

- [#8254](mermaid-js/mermaid#8254) [`351d7d2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@351d7d2) Thanks [@galshir](https://github.com/galshir)! - fix: warn when a gantt task references an unknown `after`/`until` task id, or when its end value is neither a valid date nor a valid duration

- [#8249](mermaid-js/mermaid#8249) [`b657a2c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b657a2c) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(sequence): allow hyphenated actor and participant names when a config object is attached

- [#8300](mermaid-js/mermaid#8300) [`c38a565`](mermaid-js/mermaid@c38a565) Thanks [@filipsajdak](https://github.com/filipsajdak)! - fix: A partial override of an object-valued theme variable such as `xyChart`, `radar` or `cynefin` keeps the values the theme generates for the keys it leaves out

- [#8333](mermaid-js/mermaid#8333) [`8afd83c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8afd83c) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: upgrade the parser to langium 4.4 / chevrotain 13 so bundles no longer include `lodash-es@4.17.23`

- [#8285](mermaid-js/mermaid#8285) [`859f1f8`](mermaid-js/mermaid@859f1f8) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(sequence): allow actor-menu keywords as participant ids in messages

A participant declared as `Link` (or `Links`, `Properties`, `Details`) could not be used as a
message endpoint: the lexer matched the name as the `link` statement keyword and the parse failed.
The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

…s it (#353)

Adds a **Sort imports** workflow that a maintainer runs before merging:
give it a PR number and it sorts that PR's imports with ruff (`I001`)
and commits the fix to the PR branch, forks included. Start it from the
Actions tab or with `gh workflow run sort-imports.yml -f pr=<number>`.

The built-in Actions token cannot push to a fork, and every outside
contribution in the last 100 PRs came from one, so the push uses a
project-owned GitHub App. A third-party app like autofix.ci would hold a
write token for every branch except `main`, and triggering on every PR
would let a stranger start a job holding one. Here only someone with
write access can start the job, and the App key lives in an environment
only `main` can use.

The job reads the PR's head commit as plain files and runs `main`'s
locked ruff over them, so no PR code executes. The token is minted only
when there is a fix, with Contents write alone, and a plain push means a
branch that moved meanwhile rejects it. Closed PRs, deleted forks and
forks without maintainer edits are refused.

**One-time setup before the first run:**
1. Create a GitHub App with repository permission Contents: Read and
write and no webhook, and install it on this repository only.
2. Create a `sort-imports` environment limited to `main`, with the App's
client ID as variable `SORT_IMPORTS_CLIENT_ID` and a private key as
secret `SORT_IMPORTS_PRIVATE_KEY`.

**Verified.** A dispatch workflow only runs from `main`, so each step's
script ran locally, verbatim from the YAML:
- the lookup resolves fork PR #349's head, refuses closed, deleted-fork
and edits-off PRs, and keeps a branch name full of shell metacharacters
as data
- an unsorted import committed on #349's head comes back byte-identical;
a clean head is left alone
- a dry-run push fast-forwards onto this branch as the bot, and is
rejected once the branch has moved
- actionlint and zizmor, auditor persona with online audits, report
nothing

An App installed only upstream can push to fork branches: autofix.ci's
does on mermaid-js/mermaid#8297 and mermaid-js/mermaid#8276.

(GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, exported images) no longer hide what actually went wrong, e.g. that the

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

`participant Bob@{ "type" : "database" }` parsed fine, but adding a single space before the
config object (`participant Bob @{ "type" : "database" }`) failed with a confusing parse error,
even though the plain form without a config object tolerates trailing whitespace just fine.

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

`participant Bob@{ "type" : "database" }` parsed fine, but adding a single space before the
config object (`participant Bob @{ "type" : "database" }`) failed with a confusing parse error,

`participant Bob@{ "type" : "database" }` parsed fine, but adding a single space before the
config object (`participant Bob @{ "type" : "database" }`) failed with a confusing parse error,
even though the plain form without a config object tolerates trailing whitespace just fine.

- [#8339](mermaid-js/mermaid#8339) [`c7fa1a5`](mermaid-js/mermaid@c7fa1a5) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: keep ELK class-diagram cardinalities off namespace frames

- [#8334](mermaid-js/mermaid#8334) [`d67331d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@d67331d) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix(class): place cardinality labels beside their relation ends on dagre's sides with ELK, centre dagre's end labels, and stop clipping their text

- [#8344](mermaid-js/mermaid#8344) [`99a050b`](mermaid-js/mermaid@99a050b) Thanks [@pbrolin47](https://github.com/pbrolin47)! - fix: with the ELK layout, an edge label could sit up to 16px beside its edge instead of centred on it, when the edge's terminal jog was straightened after the label's position was computed. The label is now re-projected onto the straightened route

- [#8276](mermaid-js/mermaid#8276) [`3101c7d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3101c7d) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(error): show the actual error message in the error diagram

When a diagram fails to parse, the error diagram now draws the real error message below the
"Syntax error in text" headline, wrapped to at most four lines. Hosts that only show the SVG
(GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, exported images) no longer hide what actually went wrong, e.g. that the
flowchart edge limit was exceeded and `maxEdges` needs raising via `mermaid.initialize`.

- [#8296](mermaid-js/mermaid#8296) [`aa29345`](mermaid-js/mermaid@aa29345) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: preserve explicit source relations on event modeling reset frames

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

It defaults to `ascending`, which is the current
behaviour, and `descending` mirrors every row so it reads from that row's highest bit down to its
lowest. Fields are still declared lowest bit first and keep their width, so switching a diagram
between the two conventions only means changing `bitOrder`.

- [#8282](mermaid-js/mermaid#8282) [`b6d952d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b6d952d) Thanks [@belomaxorka](https://github.com/belomaxorka)! - fix(sequence): allow `Link` as a participant ID in messages and actor menus

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

- [#8345](mermaid-js/mermaid#8345) [`7917c1a`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7917c1a) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: xychart measures text in SVG units so legends no longer clip on wide charts scaled to fit their container, and the chart title is dropped instead of overflowing when the chart is too short for it

- [#8338](mermaid-js/mermaid#8338) [`4a722fb`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4a722fb) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: Centre the xychart title over the plot area instead of the whole chart

- Updated dependencies \[[`8afd83c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8afd83c)]:
    - @mermaid-js/parser@2.0.1
