📑 Summary

The lexer rule that matches an actor/participant right before an attached config object used a narrower character class than the plain and alias rules, so any name containing a hyphen failed with Expecting 'ACTOR', got 'INVALID' even though the same name parsed fine without the @{...} object:

sequenceDiagram
    actor kebab-case5@{ "type" : "database" }
    actor kebab-case6@{ "type" : "database" } as Kebab-Cased6
    participant kebab-case7@{ "type" : "database" }
    participant kebab-case8@{ "type" : "database" } as Kebab-Cased8
Loading

All four lines now parse. The token's character class is aligned with the alias rule ([^<>:\n,;@\s]), so the three ACTOR forms accept the same names.

Resolves #8085

📏 Design Decisions

The lookahead (?=@{) already scopes this rule to the config-object case, so nothing else changes: plain and alias matching already allow hyphens, and message parsing keeps its own arrow-aware rules. The grammar already supports participant/actor with a config object, with and without an alias, so only the token definition needed to change.

Heads-up on the red E2E / e2e-required check: it's a CI timeout, not a test failure.

The scoped e2e job was cancelled at the workflow's 30-minute limit — run 34519006327 shows the annotation e2e (1): The job has exceeded the maximum execution time of 30m0s. The job had completed 1070 of 1280 tests with zero failures when it was cancelled; no test in this PR failed.

I also verified the full scoped suite locally on the PR branch (b657a2c0):

  • vitest sequenceDiagram.spec.js — 147/147 pass (incl. the new hyphenated-actor specs)
  • playwright e2e/rendering/sequence/ — 44/44 pass
  • mmd-snapshots --grep sequence — 153/153 pass
  • the snapshot groups CI never reached (state-diagram-v2, timeline, venn, xychart, usecase, wardley, zenuml, treemap, …) — all pass locally too

For context: scripts/e2e-diagram-scope.mjs always adds the full mmd-snapshots runner (~1240 fixtures) to any diagram-scoped PR, and scoped runs execute on a single container (E2E_SCOPED_MATRIX: '[1]'), which no longer fits the job's timeout-minutes: 30 — #8220 and #8229 are hitting the same wall. #8236 (sharding scoped runs into two containers) fixes this class of failure for all diagram PRs.

Everything else is green (unit, lint, CodeQL, autofix, codecov: all modified lines covered). Happy to re-run E2E once #8236 lands, or rebase if preferred.

[sisyphus-bot]

Thanks for picking this up so quickly after filing #8085 — a tight, well-scoped fix with a clear explanation of why the old rule was narrower. Let's get it in.

What's working well

  • 🎉 [praise] The diagnosis is exactly right. The old class [^\<->\->:\n,;@\s] was silently a range <–> (so <, =, >) plus a literal -, which is why hyphens died only on the config-object path. Aligning it with the alias rule on the next line (sequenceDiagram.jison:35-36) makes the three ACTOR forms consistent and is a strict superset of what matched before, so no previously-valid input can change meaning.
  • 🎉 [praise] The unit test in sequenceDiagram.spec.js:2510 covers all four shapes (actor/participant, with/without alias) and asserts both type and description. I verified it fails on the pre-fix grammar with Expecting 'ACTOR', got 'INVALID' and passes with the fix.
  • 🎉 [praise] Changeset is present, patch, fix:-prefixed, and describes the user-visible behavior. PR body links the issue.

Verification

Run locally on the PR branch:

  • vitest run packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/sequence/sequenceDiagram.spec.js — 147/147 pass.
  • pnpm lint:jison — clean.
  • Extra probes beyond the spec: the exact reproduction from #8085 (including the hyphenated aliases Kebab-Cased6 / Kebab-Cased8), a name containing = (now also accepted, matching the alias rule), and create participant my-svc@{ "type" : "database" } all parse. Arrow-like names such as a-->b@{...} still fail, consistent with the plain participant a-->b form.

Security

No XSS or injection issues identified. The widened class still excludes < and >, and downstream the actor id is only used as a Map key, via D3 .attr()/.text(), and never in element ids or selectors (those use a numeric counter). DOMPurify's final pass is untouched.

Things to address

  • 🟢 [nit] Optional: since the issue's reproduction uses hyphenated aliases (as Kebab-Cased6), one assertion with a hyphen in the alias text would make the test mirror the report exactly. I checked that it already works, so this is purely about documenting the behavior in the spec.
  • 💡 [suggestion] Out of scope for this PR, but worth noting for a follow-up: participant my-svc @{ ... } (space before @{) is still rejected because the config rule requires the name to abut the brace, while the plain form tolerates trailing whitespace. Not something this PR needs to address.

Verdict

APPROVE — 0 blocking / 0 important / 1 nit / 1 suggestion / 3 praise.

The report in mermaid-js#8085 aliases a hyphenated actor as "Kebab-Cased6".
Use a hyphenated alias ("Kebab-Cased") in the config-object spec so the
test mirrors the issue exactly; the space-separated alias stays to
document that both forms work.

Thanks @knsv-bot for the thorough review — nit addressed in a3ca63f: the config-object spec now aliases kebab-case as Kebab-Cased, mirroring the as Kebab-Cased6 shape from the issue repro exactly. The space-separated as Web UI alias stays in the test so both alias forms are documented.

For the follow-up suggestion: filed #8255 for the space-before-@{ case — participant my-svc @{ ... } still errors with Expecting 'ACTOR', got 'INVALID' because the config rule requires the name to abut the brace. Happy to pick that up separately if wanted.

Re-ran the sequence unit suite locally on a3ca63f: vitest run packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/sequence/sequenceDiagram.spec.js — 147/147 pass (test-only change, no parser/lexer diff). The red e2e-required is still the known scoped-e2e 30-minute timeout described upthread, unchanged by this commit.

Hi @mir-ashiq,
Please fix the conflict, and I'll can revisit this PR.
Cheers,

Upstream mermaid-js#8259 fixed the space-before-@{} case (mermaid-js#8255) by widening the
lookahead on the config-object actor rule, but kept the old narrow name
class from before the hyphen fix. Both changes landed on the same lexer
line, so this merge combines them: [^<>:\n,;@\s]+(?=\s*\@\{).

lint:jison clean, sequence suite 148/148 (ours + upstream's new
whitespace spec), full unit suite no failures.

Conflict resolved in e538b3e. Upstream #8259 and this PR both touched the config-object actor rule, so the merge combines them: the widened name class from here plus their (?=\s*\@\{) lookahead. lint:jison is clean and the sequence suite passes 148/148 (upstream's new whitespace spec included).

Develop picked up mermaid-js#8236 (shard scoped e2e runs across two containers),
which fixes the 30-minute timeout that has been cancelling the scoped
e2e job on diagram-scoped PRs like this one. No source changes — only
.github/workflows/e2e.yml — so the parser and specs are untouched from
the previously verified state (lint:jison clean, sequence suite 148/148).

Also pulled in #8236 in 784ae82 so the scoped e2e runs are sharded now — e2e-required is green on this PR for the first time. Everything is passing; nothing left on my side.

Release notes:
### Minor Changes

- [#8303](mermaid-js/mermaid#8303) [`9140716`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9140716) Thanks [@filipsajdak](https://github.com/filipsajdak)! - feat: add the `elk.orientFeedbackEdges` option, enabled by default. With the ELK layout, an edge from a node that a subgraph feeds back into that subgraph is now routed downstream instead of around the subgraph. This changes the layout of existing ELK diagrams that contain such edges; set `elk.orientFeedbackEdges: false` to keep the previous routing.

- [#8250](mermaid-js/mermaid#8250) [`fd4f5f2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@fd4f5f2) Thanks [@kartben](https://github.com/kartben)! - feat: add a `bitOrder` option to packet diagrams. It defaults to `ascending`, which is the current
behaviour, and `descending` mirrors every row so it reads from that row's highest bit down to its
lowest. Fields are still declared lowest bit first and keep their width, so switching a diagram
between the two conventions only means changing `bitOrder`.

### Patch Changes

- [#8330](mermaid-js/mermaid#8330) [`50c9e55`](mermaid-js/mermaid@50c9e55) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: upgrade chevrotain to 13 so mermaid no longer pulls in vulnerable `lodash-es@4.17.23`

- [#8259](mermaid-js/mermaid#8259) [`4c90f5c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4c90f5c) Thanks [@afonsojanu](https://github.com/afonsojanu)! - fix(sequence): allow whitespace between an actor name and its `@{ ... }` config object

`participant Bob@{ "type" : "database" }` parsed fine, but adding a single space before the
config object (`participant Bob @{ "type" : "database" }`) failed with a confusing parse error,
even though the plain form without a config object tolerates trailing whitespace just fine.

- [#8339](mermaid-js/mermaid#8339) [`c7fa1a5`](mermaid-js/mermaid@c7fa1a5) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: keep ELK class-diagram cardinalities off namespace frames

- [#8334](mermaid-js/mermaid#8334) [`d67331d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@d67331d) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix(class): place cardinality labels beside their relation ends on dagre's sides with ELK, centre dagre's end labels, and stop clipping their text

- [#8344](mermaid-js/mermaid#8344) [`99a050b`](mermaid-js/mermaid@99a050b) Thanks [@pbrolin47](https://github.com/pbrolin47)! - fix: with the ELK layout, an edge label could sit up to 16px beside its edge instead of centred on it, when the edge's terminal jog was straightened after the label's position was computed. The label is now re-projected onto the straightened route

- [#8276](mermaid-js/mermaid#8276) [`3101c7d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3101c7d) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(error): show the actual error message in the error diagram

When a diagram fails to parse, the error diagram now draws the real error message below the
"Syntax error in text" headline, wrapped to at most four lines. Hosts that only show the SVG
(GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, exported images) no longer hide what actually went wrong, e.g. that the
flowchart edge limit was exceeded and `maxEdges` needs raising via `mermaid.initialize`.

- [#8296](mermaid-js/mermaid#8296) [`aa29345`](mermaid-js/mermaid@aa29345) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: preserve explicit source relations on event modeling reset frames

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

- [#8337](mermaid-js/mermaid#8337) [`147f343`](mermaid-js/mermaid@147f343) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: a flowchart that declares the same subgraph id more than once now renders as one merged subgraph with the ELK layout instead of producing NaN geometry. Classes and `view: collapsed` set on a repeated subgraph now apply to it, whichever declaration they follow.

- [#8203](mermaid-js/mermaid#8203) [`40ef7b4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@40ef7b4) Thanks [@MFA-G](https://github.com/MFA-G)! - perf(frontmatter): replace the quadratic front matter regex on hot paths

`frontMatterRegex` backtracks polynomially on whitespace-heavy input, so a
diagram well inside the default `maxTextSize` could stall parsing for over a
second. `detectType` and `extractFrontMatter` now use a linear scanner that
matches the regex result exactly, leaving no document stripped differently.

- [#8254](mermaid-js/mermaid#8254) [`351d7d2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@351d7d2) Thanks [@galshir](https://github.com/galshir)! - fix: warn when a gantt task references an unknown `after`/`until` task id, or when its end value is neither a valid date nor a valid duration

- [#8249](mermaid-js/mermaid#8249) [`b657a2c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b657a2c) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(sequence): allow hyphenated actor and participant names when a config object is attached

- [#8300](mermaid-js/mermaid#8300) [`c38a565`](mermaid-js/mermaid@c38a565) Thanks [@filipsajdak](https://github.com/filipsajdak)! - fix: A partial override of an object-valued theme variable such as `xyChart`, `radar` or `cynefin` keeps the values the theme generates for the keys it leaves out

- [#8333](mermaid-js/mermaid#8333) [`8afd83c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8afd83c) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: upgrade the parser to langium 4.4 / chevrotain 13 so bundles no longer include `lodash-es@4.17.23`

- [#8285](mermaid-js/mermaid#8285) [`859f1f8`](mermaid-js/mermaid@859f1f8) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(sequence): allow actor-menu keywords as participant ids in messages

A participant declared as `Link` (or `Links`, `Properties`, `Details`) could not be used as a
message endpoint: the lexer matched the name as the `link` statement keyword and the parse failed.
The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor

The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

- [#8282](mermaid-js/mermaid#8282) [`b6d952d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b6d952d) Thanks [@belomaxorka](https://github.com/belomaxorka)! - fix(sequence): allow `Link` as a participant ID in messages and actor menus

message endpoint: the lexer matched the name as the `link` statement keyword and the parse failed.
The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

- [#8345](mermaid-js/mermaid#8345) [`7917c1a`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7917c1a) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: xychart measures text in SVG units so legends no longer clip on wide charts scaled to fit their container, and the chart title is dropped instead of overflowing when the chart is too short for it

The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

- [#8282](mermaid-js/mermaid#8282) [`b6d952d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b6d952d) Thanks [@belomaxorka](https://github.com/belomaxorka)! - fix(sequence): allow `Link` as a participant ID in messages and actor menus

- [#8338](mermaid-js/mermaid#8338) [`4a722fb`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4a722fb) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: Centre the xychart title over the plot area instead of the whole chart

A participant declared as `Link` (or `Links`, `Properties`, `Details`) could not be used as a
message endpoint: the lexer matched the name as the `link` statement keyword and the parse failed.
The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

(GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, exported images) no longer hide what actually went wrong, e.g. that the
flowchart edge limit was exceeded and `maxEdges` needs raising via `mermaid.initialize`.

- [#8296](mermaid-js/mermaid#8296) [`aa29345`](mermaid-js/mermaid@aa29345) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: preserve explicit source relations on event modeling reset frames

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

- [#8337](mermaid-js/mermaid#8337) [`147f343`](mermaid-js/mermaid@147f343) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: a flowchart that declares the same subgraph id more than once now renders as one merged subgraph with the ELK layout instead of producing NaN geometry. Classes and `view: collapsed` set on a repeated subgraph now apply to it, whichever declaration they follow.

- [#8203](mermaid-js/mermaid#8203) [`40ef7b4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@40ef7b4) Thanks [@MFA-G](https://github.com/MFA-G)! - perf(frontmatter): replace the quadratic front matter regex on hot paths

`frontMatterRegex` backtracks polynomially on whitespace-heavy input, so a
diagram well inside the default `maxTextSize` could stall parsing for over a
second. `detectType` and `extractFrontMatter` now use a linear scanner that
matches the regex result exactly, leaving no document stripped differently.

- [#8254](mermaid-js/mermaid#8254) [`351d7d2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@351d7d2) Thanks [@galshir](https://github.com/galshir)! - fix: warn when a gantt task references an unknown `after`/`until` task id, or when its end value is neither a valid date nor a valid duration

- [#8249](mermaid-js/mermaid#8249) [`b657a2c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@b657a2c) Thanks [@mir-ashiq](https://github.com/mir-ashiq)! - fix(sequence): allow hyphenated actor and participant names when a config object is attached

The `link`, `links`, `properties` and `details` keywords are now only recognized when an actor
follows them on the same line, so participant ids that happen to spell these words work in
messages, while the statements themselves keep parsing as before.

Preserve the ID's case and alias while keeping the `link` and `links` menu commands supported.

- [#8297](mermaid-js/mermaid#8297) [`967bbde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@967bbde) Thanks [@pentaoa](https://github.com/pentaoa)! - fix: reject duplicate event modeling frame IDs before rendering

- [#8337](mermaid-js/mermaid#8337) [`147f343`](mermaid-js/mermaid@147f343) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix: a flowchart that declares the same subgraph id more than once now renders as one merged subgraph with the ELK layout instead of producing NaN geometry.
