ci(nightly-next): retry only signing and publish of a failed nightly from its saved unsigned app - #27034
Leo: "WHAT FUCKING FAILED RUNS HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU NOT JUST FUCKING INCREMENTALLY FUCKING RETRY WHTA HTE TUFK WE ALREADY FUCKING DEALT WITH INVESTIGATING HTE FUCKING CVACEHS WHY THE FUCK ARE WE ALWAYS REINVESTIGATING THIS IS THE FUCKING META QUESTION WHER ETHE FUCK ARE OUR FUCKING NOTES"
What
When a nightly-next run's signing, notarization, verification or publication fails after a good compile, the scheduled feed watch now retries only those steps. It does this by dispatching nightly.yml on nightly-next with nightly_next_unsigned_run / nightly_next_unsigned_attempt (#21161), which signs and publishes the saved unsigned app without compiling. Before this, only a person could dispatch that, so a failed signing waited for the next tick's full new build.
New step in nightly-next-feed-watch.yml (continue-on-error, after the continuation step): scripts/ci/nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py. On each 30-minute check it dispatches at most one resume, for the newest nightly-next push run that meets all of these:
it completed with failure or timed_out. A cancelled tip is left to the tick (nightly_next_cancelled_tip.sh);
build-nightly-app and build-nightly-ghostty-cli-helper both succeeded in the same attempt;
its build (run id plus the two-digit producer attempt) is above the newest build in the NEXT feed, so publication would not refuse it as superseded;
its unsigned inputs are still kept (cmux-nightly-unsigned-app is kept for one day), and it holds no cmux-nightly-notarization-recovery-* artifact. A recovery artifact is continue-nightly-next.sh's to publish once Apple accepts;
no resume is queued or running, and this run has had fewer than NIGHTLY_NEXT_MAX_UNSIGNED_RESUMES resumes (default 2; 0 turns this off).
Resumes are counted by title. The companion PR on feat-cmux-next (dep-fleet/nightly-resume-run-name) gives them the title Resume nightly-next run <id> attempt <n>. Until nightly-next's nightly.yml carries that title, this step only reports and dispatches nothing.
Nothing is cancelled. A resume runs in its own concurrency group (run-<id> on nightly-next), beside any build of the newer tip, and publication stays latest-wins. The dispatched run re-validates its source itself before signing (resume-unsigned-nightly.py plan). The step reads one run listing, plus jobs and artifacts for at most 3 failed runs newer than the feed. A run older than the feed costs no reads.
Decision on the current runs (dry run, read-only)
Feed newest build 4073801205901. The two recent failures, runs 40735210057 and 40724946461, both failed in publish-nightly › "Recheck the recovered build against both feeds" with nightly_version: build 4073521005701 is not above 4073801205901. A newer build had already published, so a resume would be refused too. Decision: nothing to resume, with no extra reads.
Risk
Medium-low. The step is continue-on-error. It writes only one workflow_dispatch and uses the actions: write the job already has. Repeated dispatches are bounded three ways: one resume at a time, a per-run cap, and the one-day lifetime of the unsigned app. It does not touch runs-on.
Testing
python3 tests/test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py: 16 tests. They cover the newest-run choice, superseded builds, a failed compile, mixed producer attempts, a re-run producer attempt, cancelled and live runs, one resume at a time, the per-run cap falling through to an older run, expired inputs, a pending notarization, the title gate, the off switch, the read bound, and the workflow step. Added to ci-guards' release-notary group.
python3 tests/test_nightly_next_feed_watch.py (77), tests/test_nightly_delivery_concurrency.py and tests/test_nightly_promotion_admission.py pass. actionlint is clean on the feed watch.

Summary by cubic
Retries the signing and publication of a failed nightly-next run from its saved unsigned app instead of waiting for the next full build.
Until now only a person could dispatch such a resume; a run that failed after a good compile at signing, notarization, verification, or publication came the next tick's whole new build. The feed watch now dispatches nightly.yml on nightly-next with nightly_next_unsigned_run / nightly_next_unsigned_attempt, which signs and publishes the saved app without compiling.
Details
Adds a continue-on-error step running scripts/ci/nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py to nightly-next-feed-watch.yml. Each 10-minute check dispatches at most one resume for the newest failed push run whose two producer jobs succeeded — naming the newest attempt where both did — whose build is newer than the newest build in the NEXT feed, and whose unsigned artifacts are still kept. Every failed run newer than the feed is judged, so a resumable run behind newer failed compiles is still found; runs older than the feed cost no reads.
Skips timed-out runs — the resume validator refuses a timed-out source — and runs that hold a notarization recovery artifact; the continuation publishes those once Apple accepts. Resumes are capped at NIGHTLY_NEXT_MAX_UNSIGNED_RESUMES (default 2; 0 disables), counted by title over the unsigned app's one-day lifetime, so nothing dispatches until nightly.yml on nightly-next titles them.
Nothing is cancelled: a resume runs in its own concurrency group beside the newer tip's build, publication stays latest-wins, and the dispatched run re-validates everything before signing. A running resume no longer counts as carrying the tip — in either carries_tip or next_carries_tip — so it cannot hold back a build of the newer tip.
On the current runs the decision is nothing to resume: the two recent failures were superseded by a newer published build, so a resume would be refused too. 16 unit tests added to ci-guards' linux-guard lane.
Written for commit 5838198. Summary will update on new commits.

Release Improvements
Failed nightly-next runs that complete the build but encounter signing or publication errors can retry those steps using the saved build, without rebuilding.
Retries are limited to the configured maximum, and another retry waits while one is queued or running. Setting the maximum to zero disables retries.
Nightly feed monitoring excludes retry runs when checking whether a run includes the latest changes.
…from its saved unsigned app
main's feed watch now dispatches nightly.yml on nightly-next with
nightly_next_unsigned_run/_attempt for the newest failed push run whose
compile succeeded, whose build is newer than the feed, and whose unsigned
inputs are still kept. One resume at a time, at most 2 per run
(NIGHTLY_NEXT_MAX_UNSIGNED_RESUMES), nothing cancelled.

…of the newer tip
The feed watch's starvation guard skips its tick dispatch while an active
nightly-next run may carry the tip. A resume dispatched on nightly-next
looked like one, though it signs an older run's saved app. carries_tip now
says no for a run titled as a resume, so the newer tip still builds beside it.

The nightly-next feed-watch workflow now invokes a script that checks failed runs and dispatches a bounded retry using saved unsigned artifacts. The change also adds test coverage and includes the new test in nightly push-throttle validation.

Summary
Identify and qualify failed runs scripts/ci/nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py, scripts/ci/nightly_next_feed_watch.py, tests/test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py
The script selects recent failed or timed-out push runs and checks producer job attempts, unsigned artifact availability, recovery artifacts, and the newest feed build. The feed-watch code excludes resume runs from tip-carrying checks. Tests cover run qualification and feed parsing.
Apply retry limits and dispatch scripts/ci/nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py, .github/workflows/nightly-next-feed-watch.yml
The script checks active resumes, per-run retry limits, and workflow naming before dispatching at most one retry. The feed-watch workflow supplies the retry limit, defaults it to 2, and continues on script errors.

The new retry step will not dispatch anything until the nightly workflow on nightly-next titles resume runs, so failed nightlies still need manual recovery. A rare commit-subject collision could also cause a duplicate build. Add the resume title to the workflow and restrict the title check to dispatch runs before relying on this.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the change: the nightly-next feed watch retries only the signing and publish steps of a failed nightly, using its saved unsigned app. It matches the main change in the summary and objectives. It is long (96 characters), but it is specific and not vague.
Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
The authoritative PR diff changes only nightly-next CI workflows, feed-watch logic, the unsigned-resume script, and its tests. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, PTY readiness, manual renderer admission, input ownership, or auth/idempotency/revision/lease handling. The custom check is therefore inapplicable.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflow YAML and Python CI/test files. It does not modify Sources/TerminalController.swift, the control-socket policy or worker router, or related policy tests. The changed files contain no browser automation, WebKit, main-actor, or socket-worker routing changes. The browser automation rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflow YAML, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. It adds no production Swift changes, so it cannot introduce an expensive synchronous Swift agent-history load.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
The changed production scripts introduce no fixed sleep, timer, polling loop, backoff, or lifecycle delay. nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py uses API pagination, a 26-hour resume-count window, and a 30-second HTTP request timeout; these are bounded reads and eligibility logic, not synchronization waits. The 30-minute cadence is existing GitHub Actions schedule orchestration, which the rule excludes. The changed carries_tip logic only filters resume runs.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The changed production code uses explicit small bounds. It examines at most 30 push runs, at most 300 resume listings, and at most 3 job pages per candidate (scripts/ci/nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py:60-68, 115-123, 141-153). The producer scan covers only two fixed producer names, and artifact checks cover five fixed artifact names. The candidate-specific job and artifact reads do not rescan one shared collection for each target. The added test also verifies the candidate read bound (tests/test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py:160-165). No hot UI, socket, search, persistence join, or roughly-1000-user-record path was introduced.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes only workflow files, Python CI scripts, and tests. The workflow changes add a Python test and an unsigned-resume step; they do not change SwiftPM dependencies, Xcode package references, or .gitignore rules. No Package.swift, Package.resolved, Xcode project, or package .gitignore file is changed, so the SwiftPM lockfile requirements are not triggered.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
PASS: The diff changes scheduled GitHub Actions workflows and CI scripts. Added messages go to workflow logs or internal dispatch diagnostics, and the workflow comments and tests are not cmux product surfaces. The feed watcher change only identifies resume runs and changes scheduling behavior. No changed text has a concrete path to the cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API, and no exposed secret or payload dump is introduced.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes only CI workflows, Python CI logic, operational comments/docstrings, logs, and tests. It adds no Swift UI text, app catalog or Info.plist entries, web UI/API/metadata copy, or locale-dependent user-facing data. The workflow step name and script messages are CI/operator text, which the rule allows as operational content not shown to end users.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflow YAML, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift, SwiftUI, Xcode project, or workspace files, so it introduces none of the specified SwiftUI state-layout violations.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflows, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift, Objective-C, or Objective-C++ files, so the Swift architectural failure conditions do not apply.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only workflow YAML, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or standalone cmux-owned window code, so the auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule does not apply.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
The diff changes only workflow configuration, hand-written CI scripts, and a test file. No local logs, screenshots, recordings, caches, build output, dependency checkout, temp folder, or broad artifact directory enters source control. The new test is intentionally added to the CI guard.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
The pull request changes only YAML and Python files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift file under a production Sources/ path, so it cannot introduce a test or debug seam covered by this check.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required template sections. Summary (What) explains the problem, the mechanism, and the resulting behavior. Testing lists the commands run and the results, and separates the 16 new tests from the existing suites. It has a Risk section, and it includes a Changelog-equivalent gap check. Several template sections are missing or not filled in: the Changelog section is absent (the change is CI-only, so it should read 'none'), the Proof section has no one-line reason why no screenshot applies, and the 'Observed / Not run' subsection is missing even though the change is a fix that the template asks to be labeled. The opening quoted line is a profane, unrelated message from a person named Leo and does not describe the change; it should be removed. The Checklist items are not marked or addressed.
Resolution
Remove the profane quoted message at the top of the description. It is not a summary of the change. 2) Add a Changelog section. For this CI-only change, write none. 3) Fill in the Proof section with one line on why no screenshot applies (CI only). 4) Because this is a fix, name the focused command that fails on the base and passes on the head, and add a ### Observed / Not run subsection under Testing that separates what was run and observed from what was only read or not run. 5) Address or tick the Checklist items, and state why any item does not apply (for example, the localization, socket policy, and iOS soak items). 6) Keep the Testing claims separate: state which tests were added and which were executed, and name the CI lane for the test runs.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 47.06% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 17 functions across 3 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review follow-up. The producer attempt is read from every attempt's jobs

resume-unsigned-nightly.py validates that exact attempt. Resumes are counted

kept one day), not only the 30 newest runs.

Add the resume title to the target workflow before enabling this retry.
The nightly-next workflow has no run-name branch for nightly_next_unsigned_run. ref_names_resumes() therefore returns false, and eligible failed runs exit without dispatching a retry. Add the matching resume title branch to .github/workflows/nightly.yml.

For more information on these basic components, see Understanding GitHub Actions.
Image: Diagram of an event triggering Runner 1 to run Job 1, which triggers Runner 2 to run Job 2. Each of the jobs is broken into multiple steps.
## Workflow triggers
Workflow triggers are events that cause a workflow to run. These events can be:
* Events that occur in your workflow's repository
* Events that occur outside of GitHub and trigger a `repository_dispatch` event on GitHub
* Scheduled times
* Manual
For example, you can configure your workflow to run when a push is made to the default branch of your repository, when a release is created, or when an issue is opened.
Workflow triggers are defined with the `on` key. For more information, see Workflow syntax for GitHub Actions.
The following steps occur to trigger a workflow run:
1. An event occurs on your repository. The event has an associated commit SHA and Git ref.
2. GitHub searches the `.github/workflows` directory in the root of your repository for workflow files that are present in the associated commit SHA or Git ref of the event.
3. A workflow run is triggered for any workflows that have `on:` values that match the triggering event. Some events also require the workflow file to be present on the default branch of the repository in order to run.
Each workflow run will use the version of the workflow that is present in the associated commit SHA or Git ref of the event. When a workflow runs, GitHub sets the `GITHUB_SHA` (commit SHA) and `GITHUB_REF` (Git ref) environment variables in the runner environment. For more information, see Store information in variables.
For more information, see Triggering a workflow.

L220: Unlike traditional GitHub Actions workflows that require you to script every decision as YAML job steps, GitHub Agentic Workflows use YAML frontmatter for triggers and configuration, but let you describe what you want in natural-language Markdown—so you don't need to anticipate and encode every scenario in advance. For more information, see 【103†Creating GitHub Agentic Workflows】.
L221: ## 【5†`name`】
L222:
L223: The name of the workflow. GitHub displays the names of your workflows under your repository's "Actions" tab. If you omit `name`, GitHub displays the workflow file path relative to the root of the repository.
L224: ## 【6†`run-name`】
L225:
L226: The name for workflow runs generated from the workflow. GitHub displays the workflow run name in the list of workflow runs on your repository's "Actions" tab. If `run-name` is omitted or is only whitespace, then the run name is set to event-specific information for the workflow run. For example, for a workflow triggered by a `push` or `pull_request` event, it is set as the commit message or the title of the pull request.
L227: This value can include expressions and can reference the 【104†`github`】 and 【105†`inputs`】 contexts.
L228: ### 【106†Example of `run-name`】
L229:
L230: `run-name: Deploy to ${{ inputs.deploy_target }} by @${{ github.actor }}
L231: `
L232: ## 【7†`on`】
L233:
L234: To automatically trigger a workflow, use `on` to define which events can cause the workflow to run. For a list of available events, see 【107†Events that trigger workflows】.
L235:
L236: You can define single or multiple events that can trigger a workflow, or set a time schedule. You can also restrict the execution of a workflow to only occur for specific files, tags, or branch changes. These options are described in the following sections.
L237: ### 【108†Using a single event】
L238:
L239: For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when a push is made to any branch in the workflow's repository:
L240:
L241: `on: push
L242: `
L243: ### 【109†Using multiple events】
L244:
L245: You can specify a single event or multiple events. For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when a push is made to any branch in the repository or when someone forks the repository:
L246:
L247: `on: [push, fork]
L248: `
L249:
L250: If you specify multiple events, only one of those events needs to occur to trigger your workflow. If multiple triggering events for your workflow occur at the same time, multiple workflow runs will be triggered.
L251: ### 【110†Using activity types】
L252:
L253: Some events have activity types that give you more control over when your workflow should run. Use `on.<event_name>.types` to define the type of event activity that will trigger a workflow run.
L254: For example, the `issue_comment` event has the `created`, `edited`, and `deleted` activity types. If your workflow triggers on the `label` event, it will run whenever a label is created, edited, or deleted. If you specify the `created` activity type for the `label` event, your workflow will run when a label is created but not when a label is edited or deleted.
L255:
L256: `on:
L257: label:
L258: types:
L259: - created
L260: `
L261: If you specify multiple activity types, only one of those event activity types needs to occur to trigger your workflow. If multiple triggering event activity types for your workflow occur at the same time, multiple workflow runs will be triggered. For example, the following workflow triggers when an issue is opened or labeled. If an issue with two labels is opened, three workflow runs will start: one for the issue opened event and two for the two issue labeled events.
L262:
L263: `on:
L264: issues:
L270: ### 【111†Using filters】
L271:
L272: Some events have filters that give you more control over when your workflow should run.
L273:
L274: For example, the `push` event has a `branches` filter that causes your workflow to run only when a push to a branch that matches the `branches` filter occurs, instead of when any push occurs.
L275:
L276: `on:
L277: push:
L278: branches:
L279: - main
L280: - 'releases/**'
L281: `
L282: ### 【112†Using activity types and filters with multiple events】
L283:
L284: If you specify activity types or filters for an event and your workflow triggers on multiple events, you must configure each event separately. You must append a colon (`:`) to all events, including events without configuration.
L285:
L286: For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when:
L287: * A label is created
L288: * A push is made to the `main` branch in the repository
L289: * A push is made to a GitHub Pages-enabled branch
L290:
L291: `on:
L292: label:
L293: types:
L294: - created
L295: push:
L296: branches:
L297: - main
L298: page_build:
L299: `
L300: ## 【8†`on.<event_name>.types`】
L301:
L302: Use `on.<event_name>.types` to define the type of activity that will trigger a workflow run. Most GitHub events are triggered by more than one type of activity. For example, the `label` is triggered when a label is `created`, `edited`, or `deleted`. The `types` keyword enables you to narrow down activity that causes the workflow to run. Restrict the resume-title check to workflow-dispatch runs.
recent_runs includes push runs without an event filter. GitHub uses the commit subject as the default title when this workflow's conditional run-name is empty. A push subject matching RESUME_TITLE can therefore make carries_tip ignore a run whose head_sha is the current tip and dispatch a duplicate build.

Restrict the resume-title exclusion in the `carries_tip` logic to runs whose
event is `workflow_dispatch`; push runs with matching commit-subject titles must
still count when their `head_sha` matches the current tip.

CI fast guards: FAIL 15.9s workflow-guard-tests / ci: Validate that the persistent-pool rescue watches every owned-pool workflow
Not re-run automatically: CI fast guards is not a machine failure.
Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.
Validate that the persistent-pool rescue watches every owned-pool workflow (red on main too, not this PR)
Main has failed this step since #27383 by @teamleaderleo (self-merged) (#27415). Merge main again once the fix lands there.
Agents: python3 scripts/ci/guard_attribution.py fix applies the mechanical fixes locally.
Merge receipt for 5838198f56, merged 2026-10-29 17:55:41 UTC
Not verified at merge: ci-status (failure), CI fast guards (failure), linux-preflight (failure), plan (in progress)
Verified: backend migrations applied, CI timing, Fast static checks, guards (19), merge freeze, web-validation
Skipped by policy: apply-production, apply-staging, browser, Claude wrapper regressions, close lapsed freezes, Dogfood build #${{ github.event.pull_request.number }}, GhosttyKit release check, macos, macOS admission gate, remote-daemon, suite-coverage, ui-tests, and 4 more
Full suite: runs on main after merge.
Labeled merged-unverified: if main breaks near this merge, look here first.
Orphaned: no activity for 12 h, and no lane holds a lease on it. The orphan sweep could not merge main in: conflicts in .github/workflows/ci-guards.yml, .github/workflows/nightly-next-feed-watch.yml. Listed for a lane to resolve.
Keeps main's 10-minute feed-watch schedule (drops the quarter-hour-off test it
supersedes) and carries the resume exclusion into next_carries_tip, which main
now uses for cmux NEXT: a resume runs on nightly-next's head but signs an older
run's saved app, so it never holds back a build of the newer tip.

Checked: run/attempt selection, the build-number comparison with the feed, the REST call shapes, the dispatch inputs against nightly-next's nightly.yml, the bounds on dispatches, the merge resolution, and the tests. Nothing blocking.
The dispatch inputs nightly_next_unsigned_run/nightly_next_unsigned_attempt and the run-name Resume nightly-next run {0} attempt {1} match origin/nightly-next's nightly.yml and its decide validation (^[1-9][0-9]*$ and ^[1-9][0-9]?$, the same shape as RESUME_TITLE).
The build number run_id*100 + attempt matches resume-unsigned-nightly.py's f"{run_id}{attempt:02d}", so the check against the feed is like for like. producer_attempt (filter=all, both producers succeeding in the same attempt) picks an attempt that the validator's per-attempt job check accepts.
The bounds hold. The watch workflow's concurrency group runs one tick at a time. A queued or running resume anywhere in the 26 h dispatch window stops any new dispatch. Each (run, attempt) gets at most --max-resumes resumes, and the window covers the 1-day life of the unsigned artifact. A build at or below the feed is skipped, and so is a run that holds a recovery artifact. --max-resumes 0 turns it off, and nothing dispatches until nightly-next's nightly.yml has the run-name. A resume runs in its own run-<id> concurrency group and nothing in it cancels.
The exits are safe: HTTPError is an OSError and JSON errors are ValueError, so a failed read prints a warning and exits 0, and the step also has continue-on-error.
Merge resolution is correct: main's 2-59/10 cron is kept, the stale quarter-hour cron and its test are gone, ci-guards.yml runs the new test, and the RESUME_TITLE exclusion is now in both carries_tip and next_carries_tip.
No test covers the exclusion the merge commit added to next_carries_tip for a resume run on nightly-next whose head is the tip or contains it. The existing test only covers a resume title on main. The code is a one-line early return.
continue-nightly-next.sh skips whenever any nightly-next workflow_dispatch started in the last 30 minutes, so a resume can hold back a notarization continuation for up to 30 minutes.
When a resume run's legacy-identity jobs fail, legacy_rerun maps the build to build // 100, which is the source push run, not the resume run. Those failed jobs are never re-run automatically. This predates the PR but will now happen more often.
The job has a 5-minute timeout and the new step has no timeout-minutes of its own. A slow API could use up the job's budget before the feed-stale check step runs.
The script's docstring still says "every 30 minutes". The schedule is now every 10 minutes.
This review covers the change from 4a55df5, which I passed in the comment above. All of its findings still apply.
5838198 changes one file. It adds a [[test]] entry to tests/test-execution.toml that puts tests/test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py in the linux-guard lane, which matches the ci-guards.yml step that already runs it. No other change.
I ran scripts/ci/validate_test_execution_registry.py on a copy of each tree. At 4a55df5 it flagged test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py; at 5838198 it no longer does.
At both 5838198 and main (4a55df5^2) the validator still reports the same 6 other files: test_normalize_pbxproj, test_signer_parity_compare, test_sync_test_wiring, test_ui_fuzzer_engine, test_ui_lab and test_wire_app_sources. That may be an effect of my partial copy, but either way none of them is this PR's.
test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py passes at the new head.
Adopted by the stall reconciler. Base merge done; final head 5838198f5672de5fc52903c525c69c038bfecd13.
Merge resolution: kept main's 10-minute feed-watch cron and dropped this PR's quarter-hour-off test, which that cron supersedes. Carried the resume exclusion into next_carries_tip, which main now uses for cmux NEXT, and added a test for it. Registered tests/test_nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py in tests/test-execution.toml (linux-guard).
The only red is base. CI fast guards › test_ci_owned_pool_sources.py::test_every_nightly_sign_verify_and_dmg_job_on_blacksmith_macos_is_rescued (tree origin/feat-cmux-next) fails with {'sign-nightly-identity-legacy-blacksmith': 'not in NIGHTLY_SIGN_ALTERNATES'}. It fails with the same assertion when run on main's tip 17d20420b0a. The job came into feat-cmux-next's nightly.yml with ci: owned-Mac signing accepts only listed glaeda hooks; a refused attempt signs on Blacksmith in the same run #27357 (2026-10-29 10:10Z), and main's last CI run (2026-10-28 19:39Z) predates that, so base_red_excuse.py read a stale green. This PR touches neither nightly.yml nor owned_pool_rescue.py. linux-preflight and ci-status only roll up fast-guards.

What
When a nightly-next run's signing, notarization, verification or publication fails after a good compile, the scheduled feed watch now retries only those steps. It does this by dispatching
nightly.ymlonnightly-nextwithnightly_next_unsigned_run/nightly_next_unsigned_attempt(#21161), which signs and publishes the saved unsigned app without compiling. Before this, only a person could dispatch that, so a failed signing waited for the next tick's full new build.New step in

The companion PR on feat-cmux-next (dep-fleet/nightly-resume-run-name) gives them the title
Resume nightly-next run <id> attempt <n>. Until nightly-next'snightly.ymlcarries that title, this step only reports and dispatches nothing.Nothing is cancelled. A resume runs in its own concurrency group (
run-<id>on nightly-next), beside any build of the newer tip, and publication stays latest-wins. The dispatched run re-validates its source itself before signing (resume-unsigned-nightly.py plan). The step reads one run listing, plus jobs and artifacts for at most 3 failed runs newer than the feed. A run older than the feed costs no reads.Decision on the current runs (dry run, read-only)

Retries the signing and publication of a failed nightly-next run from its saved unsigned app instead of waiting for the next full build.
Until now only a person could dispatch such a resume; a run that failed after a good compile at signing, notarization, verification, or publication came the next tick's whole new build. The feed watch now dispatches
nightly.ymlonnightly-nextwithnightly_next_unsigned_run/nightly_next_unsigned_attempt, which signs and publishes the saved app without compiling.Details
