## `on`

To automatically trigger a workflow, use `on` to define which events can cause the workflow to run. For a list of available events, see Events that trigger workflows.

You can define single or multiple events that can trigger a workflow, or set a time schedule. You can also restrict the execution of a workflow to only occur for specific files, tags, or branch changes. These options are described in the following sections.

## `name`

The name of the workflow. GitHub displays the names of your workflows under your repository's "Actions" tab. If you omit `name`, GitHub displays the workflow file path relative to the root of the repository.

## `run-name`

The name for workflow runs generated from the workflow. GitHub displays the workflow run name in the list of workflow runs on your repository's "Actions" tab. # REST API endpoints for workflow runs

Use the REST API to interact with workflow runs in GitHub Actions.

## About workflow runs in GitHub Actions

You can use the REST API to view, re-run, cancel, and view logs for workflow runs in GitHub Actions. A workflow run is an instance of your workflow that runs when the pre-configured event occurs. For more information, see Managing workflow runs.

## Re-run a job from a workflow run

Re-run a job and its dependent jobs in a workflow run.

OAuth app tokens and personal access tokens (classic) need the `repo` scope to use this endpoint.

### Fine-grained access tokens for "Re-run a job from a workflow run"

This endpoint works with the following fine-grained token types:

  * GitHub App user access tokens
  * GitHub App installation access tokens
  * Fine-grained personal access tokens

The fine-grained token must have the following permission set:

  * "Actions" repository permissions (write)

The name is not case sensitive.
`repo` string Required The name of the repository without the `.git` extension. The name is not case sensitive.
Query parameters
`actor` string Returns someone's workflow runs. Use the login for the user who created the `push` associated with the check suite or workflow run.
`branch` string Returns workflow runs associated with a branch. Use the name of the branch of the `push`.
`event` string Returns workflow run triggered by the event you specify. For example, `push`, `pull_request` or `issue`. For more information, see "Events that trigger workflows."
`status` string Returns workflow runs with the check run `status` or `conclusion` that you specify. For example, a conclusion can be `success` or a status can be `in_progress`. Only GitHub Actions can set a status of `waiting`, `pending`, or `requested`.Can be one of: `completed`, `action_required`, `cancelled`, `failure`, `neutral`, `skipped`, `stale`, `success`, `timed_out`, `in_progress`, `queued`, `requested`, `waiting`, `pending`
`per_page` integer The number of results per page (max 100). For more information, see "Using pagination in the REST API."Default: `30`
`page` integer The page number of the results to fetch. For more information, see "Using pagination in the REST API."Default: `1`
`created` string Returns workflow runs created within the given date-time range. For more information on the syntax, see "Understanding the search syntax."
`exclude_pull_requests` boolean If `true` pull requests are omitted from the response (empty array).Default: `false`
`check_suite_id` integer Returns workflow runs with the `check_suite_id` that you specify.
`head_sha` string Only returns workflow runs that are associated with the specified `head_sha`.

### HTTP response status codes for "List workflow runs for a repository"

  * Fine-grained personal access tokens

The fine-grained token must have the following permission set:

  * GitHub App user access tokens
  * GitHub App installation access tokens
  * Fine-grained personal access tokens

The fine-grained token must have the following permission set:

  * "Actions" repository permissions (read)

This endpoint can be used without authentication or the aforementioned permissions if only public resources are requested.

For more information on these basic components, see Understanding GitHub Actions.

Image: Diagram of an event triggering Runner 1 to run Job 1, which triggers Runner 2 to run Job 2. Each of the jobs is broken into multiple steps.

## Workflow triggers

Workflow triggers are events that cause a workflow to run. These events can be:

  * Events that occur in your workflow's repository
  * Events that occur outside of GitHub and trigger a `repository_dispatch` event on GitHub
  * Scheduled times
  * Manual

For example, you can configure your workflow to run when a push is made to the default branch of your repository, when a release is created, or when an issue is opened.

Workflow triggers are defined with the `on` key. For more information, see Workflow syntax for GitHub Actions.

The following steps occur to trigger a workflow run:

  1. An event occurs on your repository. The event has an associated commit SHA and Git ref.
  2. GitHub searches the `.github/workflows` directory in the root of your repository for workflow files that are present in the associated commit SHA or Git ref of the event.
  3. A workflow run is triggered for any workflows that have `on:` values that match the triggering event. Some events also require the workflow file to be present on the default branch of the repository in order to run.

Each workflow run will use the version of the workflow that is present in the associated commit SHA or Git ref of the event. When a workflow runs, GitHub sets the `GITHUB_SHA` (commit SHA) and `GITHUB_REF` (Git ref) environment variables in the runner environment. For more information, see Store information in variables.

For more information, see Triggering a workflow.

Workflow syntax for GitHub Actions - GitHub Docs

<excerpt>citeturn1view1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; Content type: text/html; Source: open({"ref_id":"turn0search0","lineno":null}); Total lines: 2900
L220: Unlike traditional GitHub Actions workflows that require you to script every decision as YAML job steps, GitHub Agentic Workflows use YAML frontmatter for triggers and configuration, but let you describe what you want in natural-language Markdown—so you don't need to anticipate and encode every scenario in advance. For more information, see 【103†Creating GitHub Agentic Workflows】.
L221: ## 【5†`name`】
L222:
L223: The name of the workflow. GitHub displays the names of your workflows under your repository's "Actions" tab. If you omit `name`, GitHub displays the workflow file path relative to the root of the repository.
L224: ## 【6†`run-name`】
L225:
L226: The name for workflow runs generated from the workflow. GitHub displays the workflow run name in the list of workflow runs on your repository's "Actions" tab. If `run-name` is omitted or is only whitespace, then the run name is set to event-specific information for the workflow run. For example, for a workflow triggered by a `push` or `pull_request` event, it is set as the commit message or the title of the pull request.
L227: This value can include expressions and can reference the 【104†`github`】 and 【105†`inputs`】 contexts.
L228: ### 【106†Example of `run-name`】
L229:
L230:     `run-name: Deploy to ${{ inputs.deploy_target }} by @${{ github.actor }}
L231:     `
L232: ## 【7†`on`】
L233:
L234: To automatically trigger a workflow, use `on` to define which events can cause the workflow to run. For a list of available events, see 【107†Events that trigger workflows】.
L235:
L236: You can define single or multiple events that can trigger a workflow, or set a time schedule. You can also restrict the execution of a workflow to only occur for specific files, tags, or branch changes. These options are described in the following sections.
L237: ### 【108†Using a single event】
L238:
L239: For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when a push is made to any branch in the workflow's repository:
L240:
L241:     `on: push
L242:     `
L243: ### 【109†Using multiple events】
L244:
L245: You can specify a single event or multiple events. For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when a push is made to any branch in the repository or when someone forks the repository:
L246:
L247:     `on: [push, fork]
L248:     `
L249:
L250: If you specify multiple events, only one of those events needs to occur to trigger your workflow. If multiple triggering events for your workflow occur at the same time, multiple workflow runs will be triggered.
L251: ### 【110†Using activity types】
L252:
L253: Some events have activity types that give you more control over when your workflow should run. Use `on.<event_name>.types` to define the type of event activity that will trigger a workflow run.
L254: For example, the `issue_comment` event has the `created`, `edited`, and `deleted` activity types. If your workflow triggers on the `label` event, it will run whenever a label is created, edited, or deleted. If you specify the `created` activity type for the `label` event, your workflow will run when a label is created but not when a label is edited or deleted.
L255:
L256:     `on:
L257:       label:
L258:         types:
L259:           - created
L260:     `
L261: If you specify multiple activity types, only one of those event activity types needs to occur to trigger your workflow. If multiple triggering event activity types for your workflow occur at the same time, multiple workflow runs will be triggered. For example, the following workflow triggers when an issue is opened or labeled. If an issue with two labels is opened, three workflow runs will start: one for the issue opened event and two for the two issue labeled events.
L262:
L263:     `on:
L264:       issues:
L270: ### 【111†Using filters】
L271:
L272: Some events have filters that give you more control over when your workflow should run.
L273:
L274: For example, the `push` event has a `branches` filter that causes your workflow to run only when a push to a branch that matches the `branches` filter occurs, instead of when any push occurs.
L275:
L276:     `on:
L277:       push:
L278:         branches:
L279:           - main
L280:           - 'releases/**'
L281:     `
L282: ### 【112†Using activity types and filters with multiple events】
L283:
L284: If you specify activity types or filters for an event and your workflow triggers on multiple events, you must configure each event separately. You must append a colon (`:`) to all events, including events without configuration.
L285:
L286: For example, a workflow with the following `on` value will run when:
L287:   * A label is created
L288: * A push is made to the `main` branch in the repository
L289:   * A push is made to a GitHub Pages-enabled branch
L290:
L291:     `on:
L292:       label:
L293:         types:
L294:           - created
L295:       push:
L296:         branches:
L297:           - main
L298:       page_build:
L299:     `
L300: ## 【8†`on.<event_name>.types`】
L301:
L302: Use `on.<event_name>.types` to define the type of activity that will trigger a workflow run. Most GitHub events are triggered by more than one type of activity. For example, the `label` is triggered when a label is `created`, `edited`, or `deleted`. The `types` keyword enables you to narrow down activity that causes the workflow to run. When only one activity type triggers a webhook event, the `types` keyword is unnecessary.
L1004: This means that when a workflow run or job starts, GitHub will cancel any workflow runs or jobs that are already in progress in the same concurrency group. This is useful in scenarios where you want to prevent parallel runs for a certain set of a workflows or jobs, such as the ones used for deployments to a staging environment, in order to prevent actions that could cause conflicts or consume more resources than necessary.

Restrict the resume-title check to workflow-dispatch runs.

recent_runs includes push runs without an event filter. GitHub uses the commit subject as the default title when this workflow's conditional run-name is empty. A push subject matching RESUME_TITLE can therefore make carries_tip ignore a run whose head_sha is the current tip and dispatch a duplicate build.

Review comment at @scripts/ci/nightly_next_feed_watch.py around lines 375 - 376:
Restrict the resume-title exclusion in the `carries_tip` logic to runs whose
event is `workflow_dispatch`; push runs with matching commit-subject titles must
still count when their `head_sha` matches the current tip.

#!/usr/bin/env python3
"""Retry only the signing and publication of a failed nightly-next run.

A nightly-next push run compiles the app (build-nightly-app), then signs,
notarizes, verifies and publishes it. When a step after the compile fails,
nightly.yml can resume from that run's saved unsigned app without compiling
again: a workflow_dispatch on nightly-next with nightly_next_unsigned_run and
nightly_next_unsigned_attempt (scripts/ci/resume-unsigned-nightly.py, cmux
#21161). Until now only a person dispatched it, so a failed signing waited for
the next tick's whole new build. Leo, 2026-10-28: "HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU NOT
JUST FUCKING INCREMENTALLY FUCKING RETRY".

main's nightly-next-feed-watch.yml runs this every 30 minutes. It dispatches
one resume when all of these hold, newest failed run first:
- the run is a completed nightly-next push run that ended failure (the
resume validator accepts only failure or success; a cancelled tip is the
tick's: nightly_next_cancelled_tip.sh);
- build-nightly-app and build-nightly-ghostty-cli-helper succeeded, both in
the same attempt (the producer attempt the resume names);
- its build (run id and two-digit producer attempt) is above the newest
build in the nightly-next feed, so publication would not refuse it as
superseded;
- its unsigned inputs are still kept (cmux-nightly-unsigned-app is kept one
day) and it holds no notarization recovery artifact, which
continue-nightly-next.sh publishes once Apple accepts;
- no resume of any run is queued or running, and this run has been resumed
fewer than --max-resumes times (default 2; 0 turns this off).
A resume is told apart by its title, "Resume nightly-next run ID attempt N"
(nightly.yml's run-name). Until nightly-next's nightly.yml carries that title
nothing is dispatched, because the count could not see earlier resumes.

Nothing is cancelled. A resume runs in its own concurrency group beside any
build of the newer tip (the freshness rule), and publication stays latest-wins.
The dispatched run re-validates everything above it needs before signing.

usage: nightly_next_unsigned_resume.py --repo OWNER/NAME [--max-resumes 2] [--dry-run]
