ci(nightly-next): register the post-publish launch smoke on main (not a publish gate) - #26788
This puts the cmux NEXT post-publish launch smoke (#26723) on main. A schedule and a workflow_dispatch register only from the default branch.
This is not a smoke gate. Publishing never waits on it. Leo, 2026-10-23: "we want no smoke tests. No smoke tests, okay? Or at least, like, you know, previously we had the daemon with a smoke test literally block the entire nightly release, right? Like, that's unacceptable."
After a build is on the cmux NEXT feed, the workflow launches it from a fresh home.
pass: nothing happens.
cannot-run: nothing happens.
crash (on both attempts, with the harness's evidence that the app launched): it dispatches nightly-next-rollback.yml with bad_build and if_newest, so the feed serves the earlier Nightly build it keeps. It also files one issue per build with the evidence.
So a launch crash like 0c83363 never stays on the feed for more than one smoke run.
Changes
.github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml: the same file as on feat-cmux-next.
scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py: the workflow is added to SIDE_WORKFLOW_PATHS. Its Mac job takes an owned Mac's side label on attempt 1, so the sweeper re-runs a refused job; Blacksmith macOS comes after. This is the same as nightly-next-canary.yml.
Tests
These pass on this branch: test_ci_owned_pool_rescue, test_ci_owned_pool_sources, test_ci_runs_on_values, test_ci_no_github_hosted_macos, test_ci_workflow_run_sources, test_runner_label_policy, test_ci_fork_runner_routing and test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh. The behaviour tests (tests/test_nightly_next_launch_smoke.py) live with the code in #26723.
No new secrets. The crash job's permissions (actions: write, issues: write, contents: read) are the ones nightly-next-rollback.yml already uses.

Summary by cubic
Puts the cmux NEXT post-publish launch smoke on main so its schedule and dispatch register, without making it a publish gate. Runs take their smoke tooling from feat-cmux-next; a PR into feat-cmux-next tests its own head.
Every 10 minutes the workflow launches the feed's newest build from a fresh home; a crash on both attempts dispatches nightly-next-rollback.yml and files one issue per build with the crash evidence. The dispatch carries if_newest, so the rollback re-checks the build is still the newest and never pulls a build published meanwhile.
Passes are cached per build; a cannot-run is cached only for the rest of its UTC hour; a crash is never cached, so it is retried until its rollback lands.
Schedule and dispatch runs get a concurrency group of their own so a waiting run is never replaced; only a PR's runs share a group, per PR.
If the tooling ref lacks scripts/ci/nightly_next_launch_smoke.py (a PR into main before feat-cmux-next lands), nothing is judged: no rollback, no verdict cache, so the build is smoked once the tooling lands.
Adds the workflow to SIDE_WORKFLOW_PATHS in scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py so its Mac job takes an owned Mac's side label on attempt 1, matching nightly-next-canary.yml, and exempts the same job from the Xcode floor pin since it builds nothing.
Written for commit 85d7d38. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Chores
Nightly builds are checked for valid feed entries, successful downloads, and launches on macOS. Results and smoke-test evidence are recorded.
Scheduled checks skip builds that passed previously or could not be tested during the current UTC hour. Smoke tests retry once after a qualifying failure; crashes are not cached.
For non-pull-request runs, a crash can trigger a rollback request if the build is still newest, and creates or updates a tracked issue. Pull-request checks do neither.
A schedule and a dispatch register only from the default branch. Its runs take
their tooling from feat-cmux-next (#26723). The Mac job is a
side lane, so a refused job is re-run.

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.
CI fast guards passes on 85d7d38471 (run). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is ci-status.
Merge receipt for 85d7d38471: every check was green at merge (12 verified; 19 skipped by policy). Full suite runs on main after merge.
The PR adds a workflow that selects a nightly-next build and runs a Mac launch smoke. It retries the harness once when it exits with status 1, caches scheduled pass and cannot-run verdicts, and handles non-pull-request crashes with a conditional rollback request and a build-specific issue.

Summary
Triggers and build selection .github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml
Adds scheduled, manual, and pull-request triggers. The pick job selects and validates a feed build and checks scheduled-run verdict caches.
Mac launch smoke .github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml, tests/test_ci_macos_xcode_selection.py, tests/test_nightly_delivery_concurrency.py
Downloads the selected DMG and checks its size against the feed. Runs the fresh-home harness with one retry for exit status 1, records the verdict, and uploads available evidence. The tests register the smoke job as exempt from Xcode selection checks and document its concurrency-group behavior.
Crash rollback and issue handling .github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml
For non-pull-request crashes, checks whether the build is still newest before requesting rollback. Creates or comments on a build-specific issue with smoke evidence and rollback status.
Verdict caching and workflow registration .github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml, scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py
Caches scheduled pass verdicts per build and cannot-run verdicts per UTC hour, but does not cache crashes. Adds the workflow to the owned-pool side-workflow paths.

This workflow is meant to roll back a build that crashes at launch, but the rollback request may be rejected if the receiving workflow does not accept the newest-build input. A failed evidence download could also stop the rollback. Confirm that the rollback workflow on the nightly-next branch accepts and enforces that input, and make the evidence download non-fatal, before relying on automatic rollback.

PASS: The pull request changes a nightly-next GitHub Actions launch-smoke workflow, runner rescue registration, and CI policy tests. The diff does not create or modify Cloud terminal sessions, cmux-tui transports, Ghostty runtimes, PTY attachment, or input/auth/revision/lease handling. The cloud persistent-session rule is therefore inapplicable.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes only a GitHub Actions workflow and CI policy/test files. The diff contains no browser.* commands, WebKit/AppKit access, socket-worker routing, or browser policy changes. It does not touch the rule's target files, so it introduces or worsens no off-main browser automation issue.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The pull request changes only one GitHub Actions workflow and three Python test/CI files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift production changes, so it does not introduce or move an expensive synchronous agent-history load onto an interactive main-actor path.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions YAML workflow, Python CI code, and Python test files. It does not change production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript code, so the cache-substitution correctness condition does not apply.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
PASS: The PR adds timing and retry orchestration only in GitHub Actions YAML, which the rule explicitly excludes. The only changed non-workflow runtime file, scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py, adds a workflow path and comment; it introduces no sleep, timer, polling, or wall-clock wait. The test changes are scaffolding only.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The changed production paths do not introduce a prohibited complexity pattern. The workflow parses the feed in one linear pass, optionally filters once, and selects the maximum once at .github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml:88-97; these scans are sequential, not nested per target. The other loops cover two fixed launch attempts, two fixed attempt directories, or one crash-file glob. The rescue change only adds one path to a fixed frozenset. No changed code rescans scalable user-owned collections, performs in-memory joins, or adds a hot UI, socket, search, or process-sampling path.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python CI code, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift, Xcode project, or Swift concurrency code, so it introduces none of the prohibited legacy async patterns.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python code, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift or Swift interface files, so it introduces no @concurrent or nonisolated async change covered by this check.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
PASS: The reviewed diff changes only one GitHub Actions workflow, one Python file, and two Python test files. It contains no Swift production changes. Therefore, the Swift package-boundary rule is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes one workflow, rescue configuration, and tests. It does not change Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, cmux.xcodeproj, or dependency declarations. The new workflow only checks out Python and shell smoke tooling and launches a published DMG; it makes no SwiftPM or Xcode package-reference change. Therefore none of the rule's lockfile failure conditions applies.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python CI code, and Python tests. It adds no production Swift files or Swift logging changes, so the Swift logging conditions do not apply.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
PASS. The diff adds only internal GitHub Actions CI output: annotations, step summaries, artifacts, and crash issues for operators. It does not add text to the cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API. Provider names, workflow names, build identifiers, and recovery commands remain on internal CI and operator-diagnostic surfaces, which the rule allows.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python CI code, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift or SwiftUI files, so the SwiftUI state-layout check is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions YAML workflow, Python CI code, and Python tests. It adds no Swift, Objective-C, SwiftUI, or AppKit source. The Swift architectural rethink rule is therefore not applicable, and the changed diff contains none of its Swift lifecycle or synchronization patterns.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python code, and Python tests. It contains no changed Swift files and no standalone cmux-owned window changes. The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
The diff adds one hand-written GitHub Actions workflow and makes small source/test configuration updates. The workflow is intentional CI configuration; the Python and test changes are source and tests. No local output, generated logs, screenshots, recordings, caches, build output, dependency checkout, scratch directory, or broad artifact directory enters source control.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The failure remains. The new workflow adds user-facing GitHub Actions metadata at lines 1 and 35-37, runtime notices at lines 201 and 218-220, step-summary text at lines 216-218, and crash-issue title/body Markdown at lines 298-311. These strings do not use a locale-specific source. The workflow has no locale or message reference, and the PR changes no web/i18n or web/messages files. web/i18n/routing.ts lists 20 supported locales: en, ja, zh-CN, zh-TW, ko, de, es, fr, it, da, pl, ru, bs, ar, no, pt-BR, th, tr, km, and uk. The prior failure is therefore not addressed.
Resolution
Move the workflow metadata, notices, step-summary text, and crash-issue title/body to a locale-aware source. Add matching entries for en, ja, zh-CN, zh-TW, ko, de, es, fr, it, da, pl, ru, bs, ar, no, pt-BR, th, tr, km, and uk in the relevant locale message files. Keep workflow names, command names, protocol identifiers, and other exact tokens unchanged.

Make the evidence download non-fatal so it cannot block the rollback.
actions/download-artifact has no continue-on-error. If the download fails (the artifact is missing, the upload failed, or there is a service error), the job stops. The Roll the feed back step has no if: always(), so it is skipped. The crashing build then stays on the feed.
The failure is not self-correcting. Crashes are not cached, so each tick re-smokes the build. If the upload keeps failing, each tick fails the download again and never reaches the rollback.
The rollback does not need the evidence. The File the crash step already handles a missing evidence/evidence.md. Make the download non-fatal.

if_newest is not declared by nightly-next-rollback.yml, so GitHub rejects the first dispatch with Unexpected inputs provided. The fallback then dispatches without if_newest, allowing rollback of a build that is no longer newest.
Remove the fallback dispatch. This preserves the newest-build safety rule by failing instead of requesting an unguarded rollback.

Use the pull request head SHA for the feat-cmux-next case.

Do not dispatch the rollback without a newest-build guard.
If the dispatch with if_newest is rejected, the fallback sends bad_build without that guard. The rollback workflow reads the feed again and plans --bad, which pulls the requested build and every newer build. A newer publication between the smoke read and rollback read can therefore be pulled too. The compare-and-swap only detects changes after the rollback read.

In the “Roll the feed back” step, remove the fallback that dispatches
nightly-next-rollback.yml without if_newest; if the guarded dispatch is rejected
for unexpected inputs, fail closed instead of requesting an unguarded rollback.

…ot-run within the hour
The same file as on feat-cmux-next (#26723): no rollback
dispatch without if_newest, a cannot-run cached only for its UTC hour, and
the evidence artifact kept 3 days.

…cy group of its own
The scheduled ticks shared one 'feed' group, so GitHub could replace a
waiting run. Only a pull request's runs now share a group (per pull
request); ALLOWED_SHARED says so, since such a run delivers nothing.
Same workflow as on feat-cmux-next.

Add the newest-build guard to the receiving rollback workflow.
At the reviewed revision, nightly-next-rollback.yml does not declare if_newest or check it against its live feed read. This dispatch therefore supplies an unsupported input, so a confirmed crash cannot start the automatic rollback. Add the input to the registered workflow and enforce it in the rollback plan on nightly-next. Keep this dispatch guarded. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

After a build is on the cmux NEXT feed, the workflow launches it from a fresh home.
nightly-next-rollback.ymlwithbad_buildandif_newest, so the feed serves the earlier Nightly build it keeps. It also files one issue per build with the evidence. So a launch crash like 0c83363 never stays on the feed for more than one smoke run.
Changes
.github/workflows/nightly-next-launch-smoke.yml: the same file as on feat-cmux-next.scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py: the workflow is added toSIDE_WORKFLOW_PATHS. Its Mac job takes an owned Mac's side label on attempt 1, so the sweeper re-runs a refused job; Blacksmith macOS comes after. This is the same asnightly-next-canary.yml.Tests

Puts the cmux NEXT post-publish launch smoke on main so its schedule and dispatch register, without making it a publish gate. Runs take their smoke tooling from
