Why

Regression cover requested by the Codex review of #26237. That PR lets a nightly-next workflow_dispatch run, and a re-run that picks again, put the Ghostty CLI helper (cmux#26253) on an owned side Mac. A helper stuck there must never cancel the run while build-nightly-app is still running on Blacksmith. That is the rule "never cancel a started nightly", and #26192 enforces it on main.

What

Tests only. They run against tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py on current main:

  • A stuck helper on a nightly-next dispatch at attempts 1 and 2, and on a push at attempt 2, with the app build running on Blacksmith. Adopted through sweep_target() as the sweeper does, the run is never cancelled or force-cancelled.
  • A refused helper on a dispatch gets its failed jobs re-run with no cancel.

Tests

Ran cmux-ci test (Linux): 287 tests OK.

Risk: none. This adds tests only.

Summary by cubic

Adds regression tests ensuring a nightly-next Ghostty CLI helper on an owned side Mac never cancels a running app build, covering both stuck and refused helpers.

  • Verifies no cancel or force-cancel calls while build-nightly-app runs on Blacksmith across workflow_dispatch attempts 1 and 2 and push attempt 2.
  • Confirms a refused helper on a dispatch re-runs its failed jobs without a cancel.

Written for commit 0413c10. Summary will update on new commits.

Walkthrough

The change adds tests for nightly-next owned-pool rescue. They cover a helper that appears while the app build runs and a refused helper whose failed jobs are rerun.

Changes: Nightly owned-pool rescue

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fixture and rescue assertions
tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py
A fixture models a nightly-next app build and a helper that appears or becomes refused. Tests assert that cancellation waits until the app build completes and that refused helper jobs are rerun without cancellation.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the regression, test scenarios, scope, command run, result, and risk. It omits the template headings for Summary, Changelog, Proof, and Checklist, but the core information is complete for this tests-only change.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. The added code models nightly CI jobs and cancellation behavior for an owned Mac helper and a Blacksmith app build. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderers, PTY readiness, input routing, authentication, revision fences, or leases. The rule is therefore inapplicable.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, a Python test file. It introduces no production Swift changes and therefore cannot introduce or worsen Swift 6 actor-isolation mistakes.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. The added synchronization uses the test-only Clock.sleep, which advances virtual time. The diff contains no production Swift changes and no runtime blocking or timing changes.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, adding owned-pool rescue tests. No browser socket commands or WebKit/AppKit automation code changed, and no files in the rule's scoped paths changed.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, a Python test file. It introduces test fixtures and deterministic test-clock usage, not production TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or build/runtime code. The no-hacky-sleeps rule therefore does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. The added code is Python test and fixture code, not production Swift, TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or runtime code. The algorithmic-complexity failure conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, a Python test file. It adds test fixtures and assertions only. It introduces no cmux-owned Swift code or legacy Swift concurrency patterns.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. It adds Python test fixtures and test methods. It introduces no Swift production code or app-target feature logic, so the Swift package-boundary rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py (+52 lines). It changes no SwiftPM package, Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, workflow, dependency, or Xcode project package reference. The SwiftPM lockfile rules do not apply.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. The added strings are test fixtures, assertions, comments, and a test docstring. The rule explicitly allows tests and developer-only comments, and the diff adds no cmux user-facing error, alert, command output, API error body, or recovery copy.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py (+52 lines). The additions are test fixtures, assertions, comments, and a docstring. They do not add or change production user-facing text, localization keys, catalogs, or web messages. The rule explicitly allows tests and fixtures.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. It adds Python regression tests and test helpers. It introduces no Swift code or Swift lifecycle changes, and it does not trigger the architectural failure conditions.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, a Python test fixture and test methods. It adds no Swift code and no user-visible NSWindow, NSPanel, SwiftUI Window, or WindowGroup. The custom check explicitly passes test-only fixtures.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The PR changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, with 52 added and no removed lines. The additions are hand-written unittest methods and a test fixture for nightly-next rescue behavior. The path is an intentional test source file, not a log, cache, build output, temporary directory, or other source-control artifact.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

The pull request changes only tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py. It adds Python tests and changes no Swift file under a production Sources/ path, so it cannot introduce a production test or debug seam.

Replace this unreachable nightly-next fixture.

The current workflow places both nightly-next jobs on Blacksmith: the app uses the owned trusted pool only for main push or schedule attempt 1, and the helper always uses blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-15. The current side label is therefore unreachable.

Changing only side to Blacksmith would align the labels but remove every job from job_pool(). The stuck and refused assertions would then bypass the rescue classification. Model the actual all-Blacksmith workflow and assert its reachable behavior, or isolate the old picker-based scenario under an explicitly versioned workflow fixture.

Make the fake serve the selected attempt.

For the attempt-2 cases, FakeAPI.attempt remains 1. Its jobs(..., 2) therefore returns the default completed Blacksmith job, not the stuck helper. watch() can stop without assessing the helper, and both no-cancel assertions pass. Set the fake’s attempt to attempt and supply the helper fixture as rerun_jobs. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Compare the stalled-helper cancel time with api.first_cancel.

The final block checks clock.seconds, which is the clock value when the assertion runs. It does not check when the cancel happened. The fixture's app build runs until tick 400, so a cancel before tick 400 would break the rule that a started nightly is not cancelled. The check should use the recorded cancel time.
