Summary

Main's app-host shards 2, 3 and 5 have been red on every run since #20248 merged. This fixes the causes and four intermittent failures seen in the same runs.

Real regression from #20246: a stale Codex record could resume a dead session on restore. #20246 treats an agent as running when the session index isn't authoritative, so a cached quit index can't mark a live session stopped. It read that authority from isComplete(). For Codex, that is also false whenever the panel's recorded checkpoint fails verification. So a fresh index holding only a rejected stale record left wasAgentRunning nil, and restore queued the dead current binding's resume command (SurfaceResumeAgentBindingGenerationTests: hasInitialInput: true). Authority now comes from whether the kind's hook store was observed (observesEveryLiveSession(forKind:)) in both the workspace and Dock snapshot paths, which is what #20246 meant. A cached markingIncomplete() index and an unreadable store still count as not authoritative, so #20246's Claude liveness case is unchanged.

Stale tests:

  • MuseVaultRegistrationTests expected an unquoted muse resume …. Registered agents have quoted each argument and added a cd -- prefix since August. It now asserts the exact command, like the Pi, RovoDev and Hermes vault tests.
  • GhosttyMinimumContrastLayerBackgroundTests.darkTextOnLightThemeStaysDark never renders on Blacksmith (draws=0 visible=false): the app-host process isn't the active app there, so the window is never key or reported visible. It passes on owned minis. ScrollbackTestTerminal can now opt into a window that reports .visible occlusion, as SimulatorPanelThemeTests already does.

Intermittent failures:

  • cmuxd-remote dispatch could return context.Canceled instead of the queued attach write error, because the select could see the cancellation first (TestStdioRPCAsyncAttachWriteFailureInterruptsReadLoop).
  • TestWebSocketPTYReplacedAttachmentCannotWriteInput: macOS sh can print a job-control warning between SIZE: and stty's output. One printf now writes both.
  • repeatedWorkerPastesPreservePayload: four jobs share one FIFO whose 5s deadline starts at admission, so a slow runner expired the fourth. This test checks payload fidelity, so its deadline now ends only on cancellation.
  • testUnreadChangeUpdatesOnlyAffectedSidebarRow: an unrelated Workspace update inside the measured window re-evaluated WorkspaceContentView. The test now counts those updates and allows exactly that many. The ContentView and sidebar checks stay strict.

Cloud window test: CloudWorkspaceCreationRevealTests "Closing the window during ⌘N releases its manager…" failed because of when the test checked, not because of a leak. The Cloud create path holds the manager only weakly. The test checked it in the same main-actor job as commitMainWindowClose, while the close's own notification (whose object is the manager) and the cleanup it queued on the main queue still held it. It now runs the close in an autorelease pool and waits one main-queue turn, with the create still blocked, before checking.

Claude project-directory fixtures: claudeRestorableIndexMapsNestedTranscriptPathToProjectCwd failed on runners whose temp path contains _. The fixture built the Claude project directory name by replacing only / and ., but Claude replaces every character that isn't a letter or digit. Four test files now share one slug helper that matches Claude's rule.

Testing

  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py: 17/17 checks passed. App-host tests and Go tests run in this PR's CI; local test runs aren't allowed here.
  • The red results on main are in run 38511822800.
  • This PR at c217589: all 64 checks pass. The changed-suites job ran 832 tests in 48 suites, all passing, including the Cloud window test (both cases), the Muse vault test, darkTextOnLightThemeStaysDark on Blacksmith, the sidebar unread test, and the Claude project-directory test. remote-daemon-macos-tests passed with the dispatch fix. SurfaceResumeAgentBindingGenerationTests is in a full app-host shard, not the changed-suites job, so its first run will be on main after merge.

Changelog

Fixed: A restored Codex terminal no longer re-runs an ended session's resume command when its saved checkpoint couldn't be verified

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

austinywang and others added 4 commits October 13, 2026 23:05
#20246 made a restore treat the agent as running when the session index
was not authoritative, so a cached quit index could not mark a live session
stopped. It read authority from isComplete(), which for Codex is also false
whenever the panel's recorded checkpoint fails verification. A fresh index
holding only a rejected stale record then left wasAgentRunning nil, and
restore replayed the dead current binding's resume command.

Base authority on whether the kind's hook store was observed, which is what
#20246 meant; per-panel checkpoint gaps no longer count.

The Muse vault test expected an unquoted resume command, but registered
agents have quoted each argument and prefixed a cd since August; assert the
exact command as the sibling vault tests do.

The minimum-contrast test never rendered on Blacksmith runners: the
app-host process is not the active app there, so its window is never key
and never reported visible, and the renderer stays released. Let it opt
into a window that reports on-screen occlusion, as the simulator theme
tests already do.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- cmuxd-remote: a failed async attach write queued its error and then
cancelled the connection, and dispatch could observe the cancellation
first and return context.Canceled. Report the queued error instead.
- ws_pty_test: macOS sh can print a job-control warning between the SIZE
marker and stty's output; write both with one printf.
- Repeated pastes: four jobs share one FIFO whose deadline starts at
admission, so a slow runner expired the fourth. The test checks payload
fidelity, so its deadline ends only on cancellation.
- Unread sidebar test: allow WorkspaceContentView re-evaluations caused by
unrelated Workspace publishes in the measured window, counted directly.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
This test fails on every main run since Cloud was enabled for it (#19988),
and reading the code did not find the owner. Report whether the shared
controller or app state holds it, and whether it is freed after the create
completes or after those are reset, so the next run names the holder.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes refine agent-session observation checks, preserve queued attach errors when cancellation occurs, and update tests for manager retention, window occlusion, resume commands, deadline cancellation, workspace view updates, and Claude project-directory slugs.

Changes: Agent-session observation checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Codex observation authority
Sources/RestorableAgentSession.swift, Sources/DockSplitStore+SessionSnapshot.swift, Sources/Workspace.swift
The index tracks Codex evidence that was not inspected separately. Both snapshot paths use the per-kind observation check, which distinguishes inconclusive evidence from inspected-and-rejected records.

Remote attach cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attach cancellation error selection
daemon/remote/cmd/cmuxd-remote/main.go, daemon/remote/cmd/cmuxd-remote/ws_pty_test.go
The dispatcher returns a queued asynchronous attach error when available after cancellation, and otherwise returns the context error. The test combines its size probe and marker in one shell builtin.

Test helper and assertion updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manager retention and workspace view checks
cmuxTests/CloudWorkspaceCreationRevealTests.swift, cmuxTests/WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests.swift
The creation test records manager retention and ownership at several stages. The workspace visibility test counts selected-workspace publications and allows the workspace view body count to be bounded by that count.
Test window and deadline controls
cmuxTests/ScrollbackTestTerminal.swift, cmuxTests/GhosttyMinimumContrastLayerBackgroundTests.swift, cmuxTests/TerminalImageTransferConcurrencyTests+Timeouts.swift, cmuxTests/TerminalImageTransferConcurrencyTests+RepeatedPastes.swift
The terminal test helper can create a window that reports visible occlusion, and the contrast test enables it. The preparation-service helper accepts an injectable deadline sleep, which the repeated-paste test sets to wait for cancellation.
Resume command and Claude slug expectations
cmuxTests/MuseVaultRegistrationTests.swift, cmuxTests/RestorableAgentSessionIndexTests.swift, cmuxTests/AgentSessionAutoResumeSwiftTests.swift, cmuxTests/CMUXCLISessionsListTranscriptPidTests.swift, cmuxTests/CompletedRestoredAgentGenerationTests.swift
The Muse test compares the full resume command. Claude-related tests use a shared slug expectation that preserves ASCII letters and digits and maps other Unicode scalars to hyphens.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The prior boundary finding remains unresolved. The diff adds non-UI session-authority logic to the app target in Sources/RestorableAgentSession.swift: observesEveryLiveSession and the Codex inconclusive-evidence state at lines 1184, 1276-1300, and 1863-2179. The predicate is independently testable and has no AppKit, SwiftUI, Ghostty, or lifecycle dependency. Sources/Workspace.swift:621 and Sources/DockSplitStore+SessionSnapshot.swift:69 use the shared decision from two app surfaces. The pull request changes no package target or package source. Existing package code also documents RestorableAgentSessionIndex as app-target code. This violates the rule for reusable domain logic in the app target.

Resolution

Extract the authority decision into a small SwiftPM target, such as CmuxAgentSessionRestoreCore. Expose AgentSessionObservationAuthority with observesEveryLiveSession(forKind:) over global completeness, incomplete kind IDs, Codex inconclusive panel IDs, verified panel IDs, and unbounded incompleteness. Keep RestorableAgentSessionIndex as an app-side adapter and keep only Workspace/Dock snapshot wiring in Sources/. Add package tests for complete, incomplete-kind, cached-incomplete, inspected-and-rejected, inconclusive, and unspecified-kind cases.

CI fast guards passes on c217589161 (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/38526535125). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is the ci-status check, and the CI failure attribution comment names any failing test.

Tours are picked by the paths globs in dogfood/scenarios/*.json; a Dogfood-tours: a, b line in the description picks them instead (none turns this off). Look at every frame before merging: a green tour only means no step failed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the unread-invalidation assertion independent of workspace publications.

If one workspace publication and one unread-induced WorkspaceContentView evaluation occur, this assertion passes. The publication count cannot identify what caused that evaluation. Isolate the unread update from workspace publications, then assert that its body count is zero.

Review follow-up: the previous commit made every per-panel Codex gap
authoritative, including records outside the bounded verification pass or
whose verification was unavailable. Those can really miss a live session.
Track them separately, and let only an inspected, rejected checkpoint count
as observed.

Correctness review (subagent)

No blocking findings.

  1. Risk, fixed in e098a88: the first version made every per-panel Codex gap authoritative. That included records outside the bounded verification pass, the batch limit, and verification that was unavailable, all of which can miss a live session. Those are now tracked separately, as inconclusiveCodexPanelKeys, and stay non-authoritative. Only a checkpoint that was inspected and rejected counts as observed. A panel with a live tracked runtime PID was already treated as running before this check.
  2. Fix agent restore after relaunch: liveness at quit, admission starvation, fork attribution #20246 preserved: markingIncomplete() still leaves every kind non-authoritative, so its Claude cached-index cases are unchanged. Restore admission and gating still use per-panel isComplete.
  3. ScrollbackTestTerminal: calling NSWindow.Type.init(contentRect:…) compiles, because imported Objective-C designated initializers don't need required.
  4. cmuxd-remote: the error is queued on asyncErrors before cancelConnection(), so connectionError() always sees it. No caller tests dispatch for context.Canceled. The quoting in the test string is correct.
  5. Paste deadline: resume(), fail and replaceDeadline cancel the deadline task on every completion path, so the test can't hang. Nit, accepted: the never-ending AsyncStream relies on the stream staying open, and a long Task.sleep would be plainer but is a sleep.
  6. Unread test: Workspace is an ObservableObject. Nit, accepted: the relaxed bound would also hide a regression that routes unread state through a @Published property on Workspace. The ContentView and sidebar checks stay strict.
  7. Cloud test: same assertion point as before. It points at TerminalController.tabManager, a strong reference the test sets, as the likely holder. The new message reports it as controller=.
