Summary

  • reject custom Git transports, unsupported schemes, URL credentials, and query/fragment sources before clone
  • deny Git protocol helpers while preserving explicit file, ssh, git, HTTP, and HTTPS transports
  • scrub common secret environment names and bound plugin build lifetime to five minutes with process-group cleanup

Verification

  • rustfmt --edition 2024 --check cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs
  • git diff --check
  • Rust build/tests not run locally per cmux-tui Blacksmith policy

Regression commits: 18e13975a77 (tests), 215e02af8aa (fix).

Summary by cubic

Hardens plugin Git source validation and build execution so malicious or misconfigured plugins can't run arbitrary commands or hang the CLI. Local paths, IPv6 literal hosts such as https://[2001:db8::1]/team/plugin.git, and plain SSH usernames like git@host:path remain valid sources.

  • Rejects Git URLs with custom transports, unsupported schemes, embedded credentials, query/fragment components, control characters, or leading dashes (including in SSH usernames and hosts).
  • Allows only explicit file, ssh, git, http, and https transports and disables Git protocol helpers.
  • Replaces the plugin build environment with an allow-list of safe variables instead of scrubbing known secrets, keeping the Rust toolchain (RUSTUP_HOME, CARGO_HOME, RUSTFLAGS, and similar) intact.
  • Limits plugin builds to five minutes and kills the process group on timeout.

Written for commit 21ace78. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security Improvements

    • Plugin installation rejects unsafe or unsupported Git source URLs, including embedded credentials, disallowed protocols, and malformed inputs.
    • Git operations restrict transport protocols to approved options.
    • Plugin build processes no longer receive sensitive environment variables and retain only approved build settings.
  • Reliability

    • Plugin builds are limited to five minutes and terminate descendant processes when the timeout is reached.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Plugin installation validates Git source URLs and restricts Git protocols. Plugin builds use a scrubbed environment, a Unix process group, and a 300-second timeout. Tests cover these controls.

Changes

Plugin installation hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Git source validation and protocol controls
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs
Installation rejects unsafe Git source forms before cloning. Git commands allow only file, SSH, Git, HTTP, and HTTPS protocols. Tests cover rejected and accepted source forms.
Controlled plugin build execution
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs
Build commands retain only approved environment variables, run in a Unix process group, and terminate after 300 seconds. Tests cover environment scrubbing, timeout configuration, and process termination.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 21ace

The change permits git:// and http:// sources to feed manifest-controlled builds running as the local user, while updates can alter the active plugin directory before verification. Additional gaps may break Windows builds and make timeout cleanup unsafe, so this PR is not ready to merge until the security, rollback, and test-isolation issues are addressed or explicitly accepted.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the security changes and records formatting and whitespace verification. It does not include the template's Demo Video, Review Trigger, or Checklist sections, but the core summary and testing information are present.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

PASS. The pull-request diff matching the supplied summary is the plugin hardening series from e199af9's parent to 21ace78. It changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs (+262/-12). It contains no Swift production changes, so it cannot introduce or worsen Swift 6 actor isolation mistakes.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request series changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs; it changes no .swift files. The added timeout polling uses Rust thread::sleep, which is outside this Swift-only check. The Swift blocking-runtime rule therefore does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request diff changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs. It does not modify Sources/TerminalController.swift, ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, socketWorkerMethods, or any browser/WebKit automation command. The browser automation off-main failure conditions are therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request change range adds only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs. It adds no production Swift files or Swift call sites, so it cannot introduce an expensive synchronous agent-history load on a Swift main-actor or interactive path.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The custom check applies only to production Swift, TypeScript, and JavaScript changes. The aggregate PR diff from the visible PR base contains only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs, a Rust file. Therefore, the check's cache-substitution failure condition is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The complete PR diff changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs, a Rust source file. Although it adds a Rust thread::sleep inside plugin-build timeout polling, the rule scope covers only TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts. No covered-language hacky sleep or timer was introduced.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS. The PR-series diff changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs, which is Rust. No Swift, TypeScript, JavaScript, or shell production file changed. The added Rust code performs string validation and one linear pass over environment variables; it adds no nested scalable-collection scan, per-target rescan, repeated sorting/filtering, or in-memory join covered by the rule.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs. The cumulative diff from 7de2d03c08d02866ded2efb7b787df822c6be107 to HEAD contains no .swift files, so it does not introduce or expand any Swift concurrency pattern.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS. The PR feature branch starts at 2c66ab98cb42ee628e94ffd7de85b78aa2b9dc57; the diff from that base to HEAD contains only cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs. It introduces no Swift changes, so the @concurrent check is not applicable. The Swift files visible in the wider repository history predate this PR branch.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request change under review is confined to cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/plugin_manager.rs, which is Rust. The isolated plugin-series diff from 0931ca2ad4^ to HEAD contains one changed file and no .swift or Package.swift paths. The Swift package-boundary check is therefore not applicable.

Mark is_sensitive_env_name as test-only.

No non-test caller exists, so the private function can trigger a dead_code warning in normal builds. Add #[cfg(test)] to the function.

Add coverage for scrub_plugin_build_environment.

This test exercises only is_sensitive_env_name and is_safe_plugin_build_env_name. The production behavior is in scrub_plugin_build_environment, which iterates std::env::vars_os and calls env_remove. No test proves that a secret variable is absent from the spawned build process.

Add a test that sets a secret variable, scrubs a Command that prints the environment, and asserts the variable is missing. Keep the current predicate assertions.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Set process_group(0) in the timeout test.

run_build_if_needed calls command.process_group(0) before spawning. This test omits it, so the child is not a group leader. kill_plugin_build_process then calls libc::kill(-child_pid, SIGKILL). If no process group with that id exists, the call fails with ESRCH and only the direct child.kill() takes effect. If a group with that id does exist, the test sends SIGKILL to an unrelated process group on the build machine.

Mirror the production setup so the test exercises the group-kill path and cannot signal unrelated processes.

547-548: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve allowlisted environment names on Windows.

On Windows, scrub_plugin_build_environment may remove the case-preserving Path variable because the allowlist matches only uppercase PATH. Build tools may then fail to resolve dependent commands.

Normalize names on Windows before matching. Keep Unix matching case-sensitive. Add a Windows regression test for Path.
