📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe shell integrations now record the parent shell’s process start time and validate both PID and start time before continuing detached watchers. A regression test covers bash and zsh guard behavior, injected loops, shipped polling loops, and CI execution. ChangesWatcher PID identity guard

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The PR improves shell-watcher cleanup for recycled parent PIDs, but Bash can still stop a live watcher when its identity provider changes format, and a narrow cleanup path may later signal an unrelated same-user process after PID reuse. These bounded correctness and local safety issues should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 24 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Add an explicit check=False to satisfy the lint rule.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fail when the recorded start time cannot be read.
shell_start_time returns "" when the helper fails. Line 212 then substitutes FAKE_START_TIME, which turns case 3 into a duplicate of the PID-reuse mismatch case and hides a broken helper. Record a failure instead.

Close write_fd before waiting, so the negative case ends on a real signal.
spawn_loop calls wait_ready(read_fd) while the finally block still holds write_fd open in the Python process. The reader can therefore never observe EOF. In the PID-reuse case the watcher exits without writing READY, so wait_ready always blocks for the full 5s timeout instead of returning as soon as the watcher exits. Close write_fd immediately after run_shell returns; the child already holds its own copy, so EOF then means "watcher exited without a first identity check". This also removes the leak of read_fd if run_shell raises TimeoutExpired.
As per coding guidelines, tests should "Prefer, in order, a real completion signal, an injected virtual clock, or a deadline-bounded poll of a real predicate".

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Use one process-identity representation across Bash, Zsh, and the regression test. Bash currently emits a 16-digit seconds-plus-microseconds token from sysctl and a 14-digit calendar token from ps, while Zsh and the test use epoch seconds. If sysctl succeeds during capture but later fails, a live Bash watcher can compare incompatible formats and exit incorrectly. Make both Bash providers emit epoch-second tokens, accept the shared 10–11 digit format in validation, and keep FAKE_START_TIME plus its comment accurate for both shells. Extend the Bash assertions so the provider-switch path remains alive until the expected mismatch case.

Red on purpose: asserts _cmux_watcher_parent_start_time and _cmux_watcher_parent_alive exist and that a watcher whose recorded parent PID now points at a live process with a different start time exits within a bounded time, for both the zsh and bash integrations. Also covers the normal paths: parent alive keeps the watcher running, dead unreused parent PID reaps it. Uses a scratch HOME, a private unix socket, and unique panel ids; never touches /tmp/cmux-debug.sock.
The per-iteration kill -0 guard in the disowned watcher loops (zsh PR poll, zsh git HEAD watch, bash PR poll) is defeated by PID reuse: once macOS recycles the recorded shell PID onto any live process the guard returns true forever, so watchers accumulate (793 orphans / 2.1 GB / 208 concurrent gh after 20 days in the issue). Record a stable parent identity at spawn: PID plus /bin/ps -o lstart= start time, whitespace-normalized so lstart's padded day-of-month compares stably. The shared per-iteration guard _cmux_watcher_parent_alive treats a start-time mismatch (recycled PID) or a failed ps as parent-dead and exits the watcher. An empty recorded start time (ps failed at spawn) degrades to the old liveness check. Cost is one /bin/ps per second per watcher, matching the subprocess cadence the loops already have. Fish and nushell integrations have no disowned-watcher pattern and are unchanged. Closes #10926
The first cut ran /bin/ps once per second per watcher and once per preexec (git HEAD watch spawn), adding steady-state forks to a fix for an idle-CPU problem. Tiered guard instead: cache the shell's own start time once per shell in _CMUX_SHELL_START_TIME (lazy, $$ never changes, only non-empty values cached so a transient ps failure heals), keep the builtin kill -0 every iteration, and run the full ps identity comparison only every Nth iteration via _cmux_watcher_guard_tick (default 30, override with _CMUX_WATCHER_IDENTITY_INTERVAL). Plain parent death is still caught within one iteration; PID-reuse detection latency is bounded by N seconds instead of never. The test pins the interval to 1 for its bounded-exit legs and asserts the deferral cadence directly.

Fixes #10926.
The disowned watcher loops (zsh PR poll, zsh git HEAD watch, bash PR poll) guard parent liveness with a bare
kill -0 $watch_shell_pid. macOS recycles PIDs within days on a busy machine, so once the recorded shell PID is reassigned to any live process the guard returns true forever and the watcher never exits. Combined with zshexit hooks not running on the untrapped-SIGHUP pane-close path, this accumulated 793 orphaned watchers holding 2.1 GB and spawning up to 208 concurrentghprocesses over 20 days. The fix is principled: it replaces the raw PID with a stable process identity.
_cmux_watcher_parent_start_timerecords the parent's/bin/ps -o lstart=start time at watcher spawn (whitespace-normalized, since lstart pads single-digit days), and the shared per-iteration guard_cmux_watcher_parent_aliverequires both PID liveness and a matching start time. A mismatch means the PID was recycled and the watcher exits; a failed ps also counts as parent-dead. Cost is one/bin/psper second per watcher, the same subprocess cadence the loops already have. Residual risk: lstart granularity is 1 second, so a recycled PID whose new process has an identical start time string could still fool the guard; that requires the exact PID to be recycled within the same wall-clock second the original shell started, which is far outside observed reuse timescales. The bash integration had the same pattern in its PR poll loop and gets the same helpers; its git probe is a one-shot, not a loop. The fish and nushell integrations have no disowned-watcher pattern and are unchanged. Commit 1 adds the failing regression test (
tests/test_issue_10926_watcher_pid_reuse_guard.py, red without the helpers), commit 2 adds the fix (green); the test injects a live not-the-parent PID with a mismatched start time and asserts bounded-time exit, plus the parent-alive and parent-dead-unreused paths, for both shells, without touching any running cmux or/tmp/cmux-debug.sock.Summary by cubic
Fixes #10926 by pairing each disowned watcher's PID with the parent shell's start time, so a recycled PID no longer keeps the watcher alive — previously watchers accumulated (793 orphans / 2.1 GB after 20 days). Watchers now fail closed: a missing, malformed, or mismatched start time counts as parent-dead, and a watcher skips starting if the start time can't be captured.
