Summary

Preserve deliberately set tmux pane titles on ssh-tmux mirror split surfaces while retaining #7836's window-name authority for default hostname titles.

The mirror now carries #{pane_title}, #{host}, and #{host_short} from the control-mode pane snapshot and a live per-pane subscription. A nonempty pane title that differs from both host defaults becomes the surface/control title; otherwise the tmux window name and deterministic pane suffix remain authoritative.

Reproduction

On the remote host:

tmux new -d -s demo; tmux split-window -t demo; tmux select-pane -t demo:1.1 -T build; tmux select-pane -t demo:1.2 -T logs

Attach with cmux ssh-tmux <host>. The mirrored splits now retain build/logs instead of only <window name> [1]/<window name> [2].

Tests

 • Added behavior coverage for deliberate split names and live retitling.
 • Kept the existing Fix remote tmux mirror pane titles #7836 window-name, single-pane, and single→multi coverage.
 • Test-only commit is separate from the fix commit so CI can demonstrate the regression.
 • Local checks: Swift syntax parse, git diff --check, pbxproj normalization check, and test-wiring lint. No local xcodebuild/XCUITest per task constraints.

Summary by cubic

Preserves deliberately set tmux pane titles on ssh-tmux mirrors. Previously panes always showed " [index]"; now mirrors use the pane's intentional title when it differs from tmux's host defaults, live retitles apply immediately, and stale snapshot replies no longer roll titles back.

 • Adds pane-title metadata to pane-rect replies and a per-pane live title refresh-client subscription.
 • Guards snapshot ordering so live title updates win over older pane-rect replies.
 • Batches reflow, cwd, header, and title subscriptions into one refresh-client; unsubscribes header and title together.
 • Leaves pane-border labels unchanged; only surface/tab titles use the deliberate title.
 • Keeps title metadata for pending and retained panes until topology settles, then prunes on teardown; tests cover deliberate titles, live retitles, snapshot precedence, and state pruning.
 • Makes the CLA trigger gate readable on macOS system Bash by replacing Bash 4-only lowercase expansion with a portable tr invocation.

Written for commit 157e34c. Summary will update on new commits.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0a465

The PR makes deliberate remote pane titles appear and update live in mirrored surfaces, but pane-title subscriptions are not removed when panes are torn down, creating a bounded risk of stale updates or resource retention during pane churn. Merge is reasonable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up to make cleanup symmetric.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

This pull request adds pane-title metadata storage and live subscription support to the RemoteTmux mirror system. A comprehensive review of the Swift actor isolation changes confirms no violations of the rules defined in .github/review-bot-rules/swift-actor-isolation.md. Key isolation findings: 1. New public value type: RemoteTmuxPaneTitleMetadata is a pure public struct conforming to Equatable and Sendable. It contains only value properties (String, String, String) and has no implicit MainActor binding. This is correct—pure value types need no explicit isolation. 2. New internal value type: RemoteTmuxPaneTitleSnapshotKey is an internal struct conforming to Hashable and Sendable, containing only Int values. Correct isolation. 3. Static constant isolation: paneTitleSubscriptionPrefix is properly marked nonisolated static let on the @MainActor class, avoiding unnecessary main actor coupling. 4. Mutable state in @MainActor contexts: - paneTitleMetadataByPane: [Int: RemoteTmuxPaneTitleMetadata] in RemoteTmuxControlConnection (@mainactor) inherits MainActor isolation. - paneTitleMetadataRevision, paneTitleMetadataLiveRevisionByPane, paneTitleMetadataSnapshotRevisions in the same @MainActor class inherit isolation. - paneTitleMetadataByPane in RemoteTmuxWindowMirror (@mainactor, @observable) inherits isolation and is correctly marked @ObservationIgnored. - paneTitleObservers in RemoteTmuxConnectionObservers (@mainactor) inherits isolation. 5. Observer callbacks: The new onPaneTitleChanged closure parameter is non-async and follows the same pattern as existing observer callbacks (onPaneCwd, onPaneReflow, etc.). All callbacks are captured with [weak self] and called from @MainActor contexts. 6. Helper methods: New surfaceTitle static method is correctly marked nonisolated and takes no self reference. 7. No UI-bound stores accessed from background contexts: All new code operates within established @MainActor scopes (RemoteTmuxControlConnection, RemoteTmuxSessionMirror, RemoteTmuxWindowMirror). The changes introduce no implicit MainActor value models, service protocols with async requirements implicitly isolated to MainActor, shared mutable Sendable reference types without isolation, or UI-bound stores accessed from background contexts. Existing MainActor isolation is preserved and properly extended.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS. The production Swift changes add metadata state, parsing, subscriptions, observer callbacks, and pruning logic. The per-commit diffs for the feature changes add no semaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, timer, main-queue sync, or manual-lock primitive. The existing ContinuousClock().sleep in RemoteTmuxControlConnection predates this pull request and was not changed. Test-only timing code is allowed by the check.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request does not change browser socket automation routing. The policy-scoped files Sources/TerminalController.swift and Packages/macOS/CmuxControlSocket/Sources/CmuxControlSocket/Wire/ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift have no diff. The only browser-named change is test-only run-loop ordering in cmuxTests/BrowserPanelViewIdentityTests.swift; no browser.* command, WebKit wait, worker router, or policy classification was added or moved.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

This pull request adds pane-title metadata handling to tmux mirror surfaces. The investigation confirmed that no expensive synchronous agent-history loads or file operations were introduced. The Swift changes involve: 1. RemoteTmuxPaneTitleMetadata (new public struct): Parses three separator-delimited tmux fields via string splitting and performs simple string comparisons to distinguish deliberate pane titles from host-default titles. All operations are lightweight string manipulation with no file I/O or external lookups. 2. Pane title metadata storage and updates: Dictionary entries mapping pane IDs to metadata, updated with in-memory string comparisons. The intentionalTitle computed property uses only String.split(), trimmingCharacters(), and caseInsensitiveCompare() — all O(n) string operations on short field values. 3. Observer callbacks and window-mirror updates: The handlePaneTitleChanged callback in RemoteTmuxSessionMirror (which is @MainActor) calls updatePaneTitleMetadata() on the window mirror. This method retrieves metadata from a dictionary and updates the pane title rendering with no file access, JSON parsing, or expensive operations. 4. Bash script changes: The .github/scripts/rerun-failed-cla.sh and .github/workflows/cla.yml changes replace Bash 4-only lowercase parameter expansion with portable printf | LC_ALL=C tr — not an expensive operation and not on any interactive path. No occurrences of RestorableAgentSessionIndex.load(), Data(contentsOf:), String(contentsOf:), JSONDecoder, JSONSerialization, FileManager, syscalls, or per-record file operations were found in the changed code. All metadata operations occur entirely in-memory during tmux control-stream message handling and window-mirror state reconciliation, where they have negligible performance impact. The custom check for expensive synchronous agent-history loads does not apply to this PR.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

The PR does not violate cache substitution correctness. The pane-title metadata implementation uses a revision-tracking mechanism that properly handles both cold cache (never-loaded) and stale cache (older-than-source) scenarios: Evidence: 1. Fresh Authoritative Sources: The code reads from tmux control-mode list-panes (snapshot) and per-pane refresh-client -B subscriptions (live updates). 2. Stale Cache Prevention: When a pane-rects reply arrives in handlePaneRectsReply, the code only applies snapshot metadata if the live revision is at or below the snapshot revision (lines 257-264 in LayoutPublication.swift): swift where (paneTitleMetadataLiveRevisionByPane[paneId] ?? 0) <= snapshotRevision This prevents newer live updates from being overwritten by older snapshots. 3. Cold Cache Handling: The nil coalescing operator ?? 0 on line 258 and 262 provides a default revision of 0 for panes that have never received a live update, allowing the initial snapshot to apply correctly. 4. Not Persisted: The paneTitleMetadataByPane cache is transient runtime-only state. It is not part of session persistence (no Codable, not serialized), and is discarded on control-process respawn (line 428) and window teardown (line 603). 5. Snapshot Cleanup: The snapshot revision keys are removed from paneTitleMetadataSnapshotRevisions on receipt (line 159), send failure (line 364), process respawn (line 428), and window cleanup (line 902). The revision-based ordering ensures that cached snapshot values cannot supplant authoritative live updates, which is the correct pattern for handling correctness-sensitive state.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The covered production shell change only replaces Bash lowercase expansion with printf | LC_ALL=C tr; it introduces no sleep, timer, polling, backoff, or wall-clock wait. The workflow YAML is explicitly out of scope, and the shell test changes are deterministic assertions. The Swift runtime changes are also outside this check.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The pull request adds pane-title metadata tracking to preserve deliberately set tmux titles on mirrored surfaces. The implementation introduces three new state dictionaries and associated algorithmic operations. Analysis of these operations against the algorithmic complexity rules in .github/review-bot-rules/algorithmic-complexity.md shows no violations: No nested full-collection scans: The metadata updates in handlePaneRectsReply (lines 257–264) loop over parsed panes with dictionary lookups—O(P) total, not nested scans. The prunePaneState function (lines 406–415) uses .filter() with Set.contains(), which is O(n) dictionary iteration with O(1) lookups per entry, totaling O(P) per dictionary. No per-target rescans for batch actions: prunePaneState is called once per topology event (list-windows reply, pane-rects reply, or window close), not in a loop over affected windows. The window-close snapshot cleanup (line 902–904) filters a snapshot-revision dictionary once per window close, not per-window-in-batch. No unbenchmarked slow algorithms on hot paths: Socket handlers execute single-pass operations. Title updates are on-demand via observer callbacks, not repeated on every frame. Dictionary operations and Set membership tests are O(1) per access. No in-memory joins that belong in data stores: Metadata lookups use dictionary subscripts by pane ID; no complex joins or filters iterate multiple large collections together. Operations scale linearly within Mac bounds: The pane-title metadata state grows with the pane count (~1000 max on one Mac), the snapshot-revision dictionary with (windowId, generation) pairs (~20–1000 entries under typical and extreme churn), and all algorithms are linear in these bounded collections. Reviewed algorithms include updatePaneTitleMetadata (O(1) update), paneIDsForStatePruning (O(P) union of pane sets), prunePaneState (O(P) per dictionary), the metadata-update loops (O(P) with O(1) lookups), window-close snapshot cleanup (O(G·W) where G ≈ 1–3 generations and W ≈ 20 windows), and UI title refresh (O(P) once per layout reconciliation).

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

PASS. The topic diff adds no DispatchQueue, DispatchGroup, custom queue, Combine, Task { ... }, Task.detached, or new completion-handler API usage. The existing stored Task instances and DispatchQueue.main UI/run-loop hops are unchanged. The new pane-title observer is an existing callback-based observation boundary, not a new completion-handler API or fire-and-forget task.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS: The feature diff adds no async/await functions or async call sites, and it adds no @concurrent annotations. The new nonisolated members in RemoteTmuxControlConnection+PaneSubscriptions.swift and RemoteTmuxWindowMirror+BonsplitLayout.swift are synchronous format-building and title-selection helpers. The changed title callbacks and metadata updates are synchronous methods on @MainActor types, which is intentional UI-bound work. Existing async tasks in RemoteTmuxControlConnection.swift were not changed by this feature diff.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request does not violate Swift package boundaries. RemoteTmuxPaneTitleMetadata, the primary domain type for pane-title metadata parsing, is correctly located in Packages/macOS/CmuxRemoteSession/ as a public, independently testable struct with Equatable and Sendable conformance. RemoteTmuxPaneTitleSnapshotKey, a trivial 2-field value type used as a dictionary key, appropriately resides in the app target as small app-level composition glue, which is an allowed case per the review boundaries rules. The two commits in the assessed PR (0a465ce and 4cac7aa) only modify existing files and tests; they do not introduce new domain logic into Sources/. The boundary remediation was completed in commit 18f21f3 ("fix: satisfy remote tmux review boundaries"), which moved the metadata type from Sources/ to the package and created the snapshot key as lightweight app-target glue.

Revalidated at 2fe07f54e001700d2cd935783a4be715b487ce1f after the normal merge of 594eb0461e0ae4d57a99180e19097cea5e5091e0. The pane-title cache finding is covered by prunePaneState(keeping: paneIDsForStatePruning()) and the rect-publication pruning tests; focused metadata/auth/retry tests pass. Existing review threads are resolved/outdated, and no new actionable finding was found. CLA identity/approval checks retain their human blockers.

Reviewed: pane titles set in tmux now carry through to the mirror. Stale snapshots can't roll them back, and the caches are pruned. The one failure in the earlier full-suite dispatch (mirrorReorderRejectedBySyncOwnerLeavesLocalOrderUnchanged) is in Workspace.reorderSurface, which this PR doesn't touch. I merged main in and turned on auto-merge, so fresh CI will settle it. Thanks :)
