cmux wants a compact tab bar action cluster: "+", one split button and a "..." overflow, chosen per pane. Today the trailing action buttons only run one action on click: no menu, no Option-click and no per-pane list.

This adds, all opt-in:

  • SplitActionButton.menuBehavior: .secondary (click runs the action; right-click or a 0.35 s press-and-hold opens the menu) or .primary (click opens the menu). The host builds the menu through the new BonsplitDelegate.splitTabBar(_:menuForSplitActionButton:inPane:).
  • SplitActionButton.alternateAction: what Option-click runs (split down on a split-right button).
  • SplitActionButton.offersNewTerminal: keeps double-click on empty tab bar space creating a terminal when the plain new-terminal button is replaced by a "+" with a menu.
  • BonsplitController.setSplitButtons(_:forPane:) / splitButtons(forPane:): a per-pane button list; nil keeps the configured default. Setting an equal list is a no-op.
  • In a narrow pane, choosing a .primary button from the collapsed overflow menu opens its menu at the pointer.

Buttons that set none of the new fields keep the existing code paths, and encoding omits the new keys when they are at their defaults. Tests: Tests/BonsplitTests/SplitActionButtonMenuTests.swift.

Used by the cmux change that compacts the pane tab bar actions (cmux-next counterpart: manaflow-ai/cmux#17346).

Summary by cubic

Adds menus, Option-click alternates, and per-pane overrides to the tab bar action buttons.

  • SplitActionButton.menuBehavior (.none/.secondary/.primary) decides whether a click runs the action or opens a host-provided menu, and alternateAction runs on Option-click; .secondary also opens the menu on right-click or a 0.35 s press-and-hold while the pointer stays on the button.
  • BonsplitController.setSplitButtons(_:forPane:) lets a host show a different button list per pane; nil falls back to the configured defaults and equal values are no-ops.
  • offersNewTerminal keeps double-click-on-empty-tab-bar creating a terminal when the plain new-terminal button is replaced with a menu button.
  • In narrow panes the collapsed overflow menu lists a button's alternate action and menu, and a named "Show Menu" accessibility action (present only on menu buttons) opens the menu under the button.
  • Buttons without the new fields keep the existing code paths, and encoding omits the new keys at their defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Split-action buttons can now offer primary or secondary menus, alternate actions when Option is held, and new-terminal options.
    • Configure split-action buttons per pane, with the option to restore configured defaults.
    • Provide menus for split actions through a delegate callback.
    • Secondary menus open on right-click or a press-and-hold; primary menus open on press. Menu actions are also available from the overflow menu and accessibility controls.

…action buttons

SplitActionButton gains menuBehavior (none/secondary/primary) and an
optional alternateAction performed on Option-click. Buttons that use
either go through an AppKit overlay that handles click, right-click and
press-and-hold; the menu comes from a new delegate callback
splitTabBar(_:menuForSplitActionButton:inPane:). Buttons without these
fields keep the existing Button and mouse-down paths unchanged.

BonsplitController.setSplitButtons(_:forPane:) lets a host show a
different button list in one pane's tab bar.

offersNewTerminal marks a host button whose menu offers a new terminal,
so a host that replaces the .newTerminal button with a menu button keeps
double-click-to-create-terminal on empty tab bar space.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Split-action buttons now support alternate actions, menu behavior, and terminal-menu offers. The controller supports pane-specific button overrides and delegate-provided menus. The tab bar handles menu and mouse interactions, and tests cover configuration, overrides, and interactions.

The controller forwards menu requests to the delegate. The delegate callback returns an optional menu, with a default implementation that returns nil.
Mouse and menu action handling
Sources/Bonsplit/Internal/Views/TabBarView.swift, Tests/BonsplitTests/SplitActionButtonMenuTests.swift
The tab bar handles primary-menu mouse-down, secondary-menu right-click or hold, Option-click action selection, accessibility actions, and terminal requests from buttons that offer a new terminal.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2060a

Option-click on a menu-opening button that also has an alternate action opens the menu instead of running the alternate action. This is a narrow gap in a new opt-in feature, and existing buttons are unaffected. It is safe to merge with a small follow-up fix.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2060a

The additions are opt-in and reuse the application’s existing action authority. The main design risk is that pending menu interactions can survive changes to their pane or button configuration. Unauthorized execution is not demonstrated, and the effects of application-provided menu actions remain outside this review.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Pending menu interactions are not bound to the current pane and button lifetime. Positional button-row identity and callback replacement can retarget a pending hold after an override changes. Separately, a menu captured before reentrant pane removal or configuration replacement can still be presented by the deferred task. Initial interactivity checks and view-removal cancellation limit exposure but do not cover these transitions. This is a command-ownership gap, not demonstrated unauthorized execution.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly changed exposure is in-process pane action routing. Menu-item effects inherit the embedding application’s action authority; their maximum asset, service, or data exposure cannot be bounded from this package’s delegate interface alone.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The inspected paths do not establish an untrusted caller gaining new authority: local input selects host-configured actions or requests a host-provided menu. Authorization of custom and menu-item actions remains the embedding application’s responsibility; pane-button visibility should not be treated as an authorization guarantee.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Mouse-up and view detachment cancel pending holds, and menu retrieval rechecks interactivity. Overlay updates only replace callbacks, while deferred presentation uses an already captured menu without a subsequent ownership check. Tests cover ordinary encoding, override clearing, and click paths, but do not establish behavior during override replacement or pane closure with menu work pending.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind pending interactions to pane and button identity, invalidate them on configuration replacement, and revalidate ownership after delegate callbacks and before deferred presentation. Hosts with sensitive menu actions should also validate current target identity and authorization when an item executes.

…Over

The collapsed overflow menu lists a button's Option-click action and its
menu, a named Show Menu accessibility action opens the menu under the
button, and press-and-hold opens no menu once the pointer has left it.

after merging main, the menu and option-click buttons from #272 built their
own view without the half-gap padding, so next to the padded buttons they
lost their spacing (and a trailing one moved 2pt right) and had no hover fill.

both paths now share one chrome modifier for padding, fill and glyph color.
the menu overlay's nsview owns the pointer, so it reports enter and exit
from its own tracking area, gated by the bar hover like the plain buttons,
and clears it when the view leaves the window.
