This PR now also contains two stacked PRs, squash-merged into this branch:

Each PR's description has its details and tests. The folder-import fixes below are this PR's own changes.

Folder uploads of nested Word/PowerPoint/Excel files had six problems. I reproduced them by running the real upload extractor code over zips built by the web app's zip worker.

Changes

  1. Uppercase extensions failed the upload. REPORT.DOCX parsed as docx, but the extractor rebuilt the on-disk path as REPORT.docx and reported "Not a file". It now uses the stored full_name.
  2. One failed file hid the whole tree. Only fully Completed uploads were marked uploaded, so a partial failure left every project uploadPending, even though the websocket still said "completed". PartiallyCompleted uploads are now marked uploaded and reported as partial, and the web app shows a toast.
  3. Junk files were imported. Office lock files (~$Report.docx), Thumbs.db, ehthumbs.db, desktop.ini, Icon\r, __MACOSX, and anything inside hidden folders (e.g. .git/) are now skipped.
    • root_dir_common_filter was being applied to absolute paths, where it never matched.
    • The picked root folder is kept even if its own name starts with ..
  4. .doc and .xlsm were not file types. They are now recognized (FileType::Doc, FileType::Xlsm).
  5. The folder picker renamed the upload. handleFolderSelect stripped the picked folder from the zip paths. When the picked folder held a single subfolder, the server took that subfolder as the root, so the import was renamed and lost a level. Zip paths now keep the picked folder, as drag-and-drop already did.
  6. Empty folders were dropped.
    • The zip worker now writes folder entries.
    • A dropped folder with no files still uploads.
    • The extractor reports every folder.
    • UploadFolderRequest gets an optional folders list, which build_file_system turns into folder nodes, so each one becomes a project.
    • The folder picker (webkitdirectory) cannot see empty subfolders; that is a browser limitation.

Also:

  • Regenerated the web service clients and SDK for the new file types and the folders field.
  • Added the new types to fileTypeMap.ts and the channel attachment list.
  • ContentType::from_str now parses MIME types case-insensitively, so the mixed-case .xlsm MIME type round-trips.
  • Updated two tests that used .doc as their example of an unknown file type.
  • Documented folder uploads in the agent guide.

Not changed: .docx still converts to PDF. It does so for single uploads too, and .pptx/.xlsx never did. Search indexing, AI document reads and citations read that PDF, so removing it is a separate change.

Testing

  • cargo test -p upload_extractor_lambda_handler -p projects -p model -p model_file_type -p document_storage_service_client -p item_filters -p soup-filter-cache-adapter, against a local migrated Postgres.
    • New tests: browser-shaped zips through extract_zip_file + build_file_system (nested Office tree with junk files, uppercase extensions, empty folders, a folder holding one subfolder); ignore rules; uppercase path lookup; folder-tree building with empty folders; .doc/.xlsm parsing; MIME round trip for every file type.
  • cargo clippy on the changed packages: no new warnings.
  • vitest:
    • new folderUploadPaths.test.ts and zipWorker.test.ts, which runs the real worker;
    • the full core + service-clients projects (2,331 tests) pass.
  • tsc --noEmit clean.
  • biome/oxlint/ast-grep on changed files, as just check runs them.
  • Not exercised in a browser: the unzip runs in the upload extractor Lambda, which the local stack does not run, and this environment cannot sign in to dev. The worker was run directly in vitest instead.

- Find extracted files by their on-disk name so uppercase extensions
(REPORT.DOCX) no longer fail the upload.
- Mark partially completed folder uploads as uploaded and report them as
partial, so one failed file no longer hides the whole tree.
- Skip Office lock files (~$*), Thumbs.db, desktop.ini, __MACOSX and
  anything inside hidden folders.
- Recognize .doc and .xlsm as file types.
- Keep the picked folder as the zip root for folder-picker uploads so a
folder holding one subfolder keeps its own name.
- Upload empty folders as projects: the zip worker writes folder entries,
the extractor reports every folder, and the upload API accepts them.
Also lists .doc and .xlsm in the frontend file type map and channel
attachment types, reports partially completed folder uploads, and lints
the folder upload changes.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Folder uploads now preserve empty subfolders and retain the selected folder structure.
    • Added support for .xlsm and .doc files.
    • Upload extraction skips hidden files and common system and metadata files.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Partial bulk uploads now display an alert when some files could not be uploaded.
    • File extensions are handled without changing their original capitalization.

Walkthrough

The changes add DOC and XLSM file type support across web, service, and SDK declarations. Folder uploads now carry folder paths through browser ZIP creation and storage requests, allowing extraction and filesystem construction to retain empty folders. The extractor filters hidden and common metadata entries, preserves original filename case, and handles partially completed uploads. Tests and documentation cover the updated behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b1a65

The XLSM MIME type cannot be parsed back into a content type. No affected production path was found, so this is a small follow-up fix rather than a merge blocker.

…les filter

ContentType::from_str lowercased its input but compared it with literal
MIME types, so the canonical .xlsm type
(application/vnd.ms-excel.sheet.macroEnabled.12) never parsed. Compare
case-insensitively and test that every file type's MIME type parses back.

The assoc:other document filter snapshot now includes .xlsm and .doc.

The web Test job failed on 4601bfb, but every test passed: 1,520 files and 13,382 tests. Vitest exited non-zero because of one unhandled rejection: ws does not work in the browser, raised by jsdom's WebSocket while src/features/block-fig/queries/fig-comments.test.ts ran.

That test isn't related to this PR:

  • This PR doesn't touch block-fig or WebSockets.
  • 4601bfb changes only Rust (model_file_type, the item_filters snapshot).
  • The same job passed on the previous head, b1a658e, with identical frontend code.

No fix exists for it yet. I couldn't re-run it: this integration gets a 403 on re-run. A maintainer needs to re-run the failed job (run 37485004380). The next push to this branch will also re-run it.

.doc is now a known file type, so the test that unknown fileType filter
inputs are rejected uses .docm instead.

The web Test job failed twice, on 150b738 and on 782fcb2. Each time, every test passed except scripts/agent-fold.test.ts. Its beforeAll runs just build-agent-fold-wasm, and that build hit Vitest's 300 s hook timeout.

  • The web Test job doesn't cache that build, so every run compiles the release WASM from scratch. That took 198 s on an earlier run and over 300 s on these two.
  • agent_fold's dependency tree doesn't include any crate this PR changes.

Update: b71e95d raises that hook's timeout to 600 s. The push also re-runs every check, including cargo-deny, which had failed while downloading the Rust toolchain. No maintainer re-run is needed any more.

cargo-deny failed on 782fcb2 before it checked anything. The job's container could not download the Rust toolchain: component download failed for rustc-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl ... rustc-1.94.0-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.xz. That is an infra failure, unrelated to this PR's dependencies.

Run locally on 782fcb2 with the same cargo-deny version (0.19.8), cargo deny --all-features check passes: advisories ok, bans ok, licenses ok, sources ok.

Update: the push of b71e95d re-runs this check, so no maintainer re-run is needed.

CI builds the release agent_fold WASM from scratch in this suite's
beforeAll on every run. It took 3-5 minutes on recent runners and hit
the 5-minute hook timeout on two runs of this branch, failing the job
even though every test passed.
