Summary

  • Keep model-list and template reads responsive while Codex version and bundled-model probes refresh asynchronously. Serve the same selection's last confirmed catalog, discard late input/epoch changes, and bound subprocess/output waits and retries. Caller cancellation stays separate from shared refreshes; explicit synchronous CLI calls remain supported.
  • Dispose the HTTP owner's translator budget on client abort, including an unread response body. Keep producer cancellation, prepared response bytes/status/headers and Responses markers intact; late accounting callbacks cannot resurrect a disposed budget. Real isolated early-disconnect controls retained four budgets on stock 2.77.0 and zero on the patched copy. This establishes that ownership defect, not every historical production freeze or all external memory.
  • Preserve Windows fixture ownership across entire ACL flights, normal commands, command gaps, timeout survivors and physical/named aliases. Drain model-arrival producers and actual handles before deleting their fixture root. Move log-admission cases unchanged to a registered sibling file to honor the 2,000-line ratchet. Compare picker public metadata with bigint device/inode identities before credential access; distinct full-width file IDs must not alias through Number rounding.
  • Add portable credential-free Rust/Bun contract CI. Refs [Bug][Windows] live Bun 1.4.0 listener stalls health checks and escapes child-exit-only recovery on 2.77.0 #6671. External Rust recovery supervision is separate; this PR adds no request replay or service restart behavior.

Verification

  • Current head 39663ff31010dd1c1661f6dc005fd6ac6f36cf89 contains upstream dev e6c6e13a22e465812f509a423990e9f09e32b1d0 (zero missing commits at inspection). git merge-tree --write-tree origin/dev HEAD succeeds and equals the current tree. GitHub still reports conflicting mergeability; that server-side result remains unresolved and is not claimed cleared.
  • Final cargo nextest run --locked --manifest-path scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/Cargo.toml --workspace --no-fail-fast: 19 passed, 0 skipped, with the actual shipping Bun 1.4.2. cargo fmt --check and all-target Clippy -D warnings passed. This remains a binary-only package with no doctest targets.
  • New file-identity contract intercepts both stat calls and supplies 9007199254740992n / 9007199254740993n, which round to the same Number. The old code reaches the credential store and fails the expected pre-access refusal; bigint code rejects it with zero store calls. Earlier failed injection setup attempts are not behavioral-red evidence. This does not establish the precise NTFS IDs on the failed hosted runner.
  • Bun 1.4.0 focused verification: picker CA 20 passed / 2 existing POSIX-FIFO skips; moved log-admission cases 2 passed / 35 assertions; all model-arrival cases 5 passed. Test-layout tooling and layout checks passed. bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts and git diff --check passed.
  • Full-local-suite resource exception: earlier full runs exceeded 900 seconds amid shared-PC subprocess contention. This continuation ran the failed domains and the full Rust control package rather than repeating previously passing full suites. A combined focused run initially timed out in its repository scan (71 seconds with a 30-second Bun budget); the unchanged direct ratchet script subsequently passed. A missing import after moving cases was fixed and both relocated cases then passed. A stale shared test-lock PID had been reused by a later conhost process; creation/acquisition times and zero live members were checked before preserving/renaming only that stale record, without stopping the replacement process. The queued CA suite then completed successfully. These operational failures are not hidden or called passing runs.
  • Independent final Gemini 3.1 Pro delta review and explicit identity/security review: Must 0. Prior Claude reviews cover catalog cancellation, accounting/marker semantics, whole-flight ACL ownership and workflow security. All three existing CodeRabbit review threads were resolved at inspection; new findings will be checked before readiness.
  • Previous-head portable 3-OS contracts passed at 9149843fc: https://github.com/mashfromband/opencodex/actions/runs/37862664075 . That head's full CI https://github.com/mashfromband/opencodex/actions/runs/37863222160 failed the file-size scan, picker replacement and model-arrival teardown; the current patch addresses those failures. Those old-head results are not current-head CI evidence.
  • Current-head full and 3-OS CI have not run. GitHub rejects fork dispatch with HTTP 422 and displays "Workflows on this fork have been disabled" because of Actions usage, even though repository permissions report enabled and the relevant workflows active. Re-enabling every fork workflow was rejected by automatic approval review; no alternate route was used. Required trusted upstream CI, maintainer sponsorship and review remain necessary. The author has no upstream push/maintain/admin authority.
  • Earlier isolated catalog controls covered slow candidates, inherited stdout and pin changes: 1,297 held-process identity checks returned 200, maximum 1,078ms under shared-PC load. Model-list calls finished in 1,096/1,268/1,274ms and preserved pin bytes. Finite descendants were contained in a Rust Job. No arbitrary production orphan cleanup or simple speed ratio is claimed.
  • Real transport controls used an isolated copy, synthetic 8 MiB requests, four completed responses/four verified early disconnects and a loopback openai-chat provider, with no OAuth/TLS/real accounts. Stock retained four budgets after idle/GC, the final error-preserving patch zero. Remaining external memory was about 139 MB; another post-marker cancellation control retained zero budgets and about 72 MB external. These results do not explain all production external memory. Production source has not been patched by this PR.
  • Subsequent current-install controls use stock 2.81.0 / Bun 1.4.2, separated from the earlier 2.77.0 / Bun 1.4.0 result. In the isolated loopback openai-chat path, both post-marker and pre-response-read disconnects left zero live budgets after 30-second idle/GC (about 11.7–12.1 MB external); the patched-copy early case also left zero. Across those three controls all 484 held-process health probes returned 200. A separate temporary Rust extension exercised loopback openai-responses SSE with proper event names: four completed terminals, four post-marker disconnects and four upstream resets, zero remaining budgets and about 11.8 MB external. These negative reproductions narrow the investigation: the earlier retained-budget control is not a reproduction of all current-install memory growth. Subsequent synthetic TLS/HTTP2 controls are described below; real OAuth accounts and original production attribution remain untested. The temporary extension is not deployed or claimed as hosted-CI coverage.
  • Additional private Rust controls on stock 2.81.0 / Bun 1.4.2 used synthetic loopback TLS and validated HTTP versions per upstream request. HTTP/1.1 completed four terminals/four downstream marker disconnects with four upstream body drops, 144/144 identity-health 200 and ~16.5 MB external after GC before clearing application owners. HTTP/2 with corrected private fixture forwarding of Bun fetch init completed four terminals/four downstream marker disconnects, 145/145 health 200 and ~20.6 MB after that GC; all nine upstream bodies completed, so that marker condition alone does not establish an upstream abort. An early HTTP/2 case waited for actual upstream request bodies then closed downstream before response reading: 16 normal/16 early closes, 16 upstream pre-terminal body drops/active0, 287/289 health 200 (two observer-only 1.5s deadlines), ~14.8 MB external/budget0 after owner-preserving GC.
  • A larger openai-chat translation / TLS HTTP2 / store:true control used 8 MiB input, 8 MiB output, 16 clients and eight alternating waves: 64 completed terminals, 64 downstream marker cancellations, 64 upstream body drops/active0, >1 GiB total upstream input. Responses translation repeats full text in final frames (~42.1 MB read per completed response), so the diagnostic read cap was corrected to a finite 2–98 MiB range. Peak private memory was ~3.92 GB; external fell ~486 MB → 21.9 MB and live budgets were zero after full GC before owner clearing. 360/368 held-process health checks were 200; eight were ~1.5s observer deadlines, not 20s recovery-monitor failures. Exit0 and upstream shutdown were checked. This reproduced collectible allocation pressure in the synthetic current path; it does not identify every historical freeze, the full production-growth cause, or real-account behavior. Replay-owner accounting was ~20 KB at capture, so this is not a reproduction of the production's pinned ~65 MB store.
  • The temporary diagnostic also gained an independent owned-socket deadline. A real TLS/h2 client withheld receive credit: disabling only that independent timer left the body alive and failed the deadline assertion; restoring it released the body before server-wide shutdown. Latest private diagnostic 8/8 nextest (0 skip), all-target Clippy -D warnings, release and Gemini review Must0 passed. A 5-minute read-only observation of a new production process had 289/289 health 200, maximum 1,352ms; it supplied no 20-second stopped-stack attribution. These tools/evidence are separate from the PR source and are not deployed or hosted-CI coverage. No owner trust store, real account, credentials or paid API calls were used.
  • Workflow security: shipping Bun 1.4.2; immutable action pins; contents read; no checkout credentials, secrets, cache, artifacts, write permission or publication eligibility. Upstream unsponsored_surface correctly requires maintainer sponsorship of the restricted paths. No gate or security requirement was removed.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
  • My PR is ready for review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Codex catalog reads now use confirmed snapshots while asynchronous runtime and catalog refreshes run. Runtime persistence rejects stale observations. The pull request adds a Windows diagnostic harness, Rust-driven Bun contracts, cross-platform CI, and documentation for the catalog behavior.

Changes

Codex catalog refresh and diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cancellable runtime observations
src/codex/runtime.ts
Runtime probes accept abort signals and deadlines. Async observations track selection inputs and cache epochs. Persistence occurs only when those values remain current.
Asynchronous bundled-catalog loading
src/codex/catalog/bundled.ts
The loader shares eligible asynchronous work, cancels stale or expired work, and preserves confirmed catalog data when refreshes fail. Snapshot reads return data for the current selection and can start a background refresh.
Catalog consumers and contract updates
src/codex/catalog-auto-refresh-sources.ts, src/codex/catalog/effort.ts, src/codex/catalog/retained-sync.ts, tests/codex-integration/*, scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/tests/async_contracts.rs, structure/catalog.md, structure/runtime.md, structure/ops/*, docs-site/src/content/docs/troubleshooting/windows-memory.md
Scheduled refresh and retained sync use asynchronous loading or confirmed snapshots. Tests and documentation describe the updated catalog behavior.
Windows diagnostic harness
scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/Cargo.toml, scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/README.md, scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/src/*
The Windows-only Rust harness launches an isolated child and checks health and model responses around version lookups. It records process metrics and supports fixture scenarios and optional responsiveness assertions.
Cross-platform contract workflow
.github/workflows/catalog-async-contracts.yml
The workflow runs the Rust-driven Bun contracts on Linux, macOS, and Windows for configured source changes and manual dispatch.

…en (#6796)

Carry the runtime portion of #6723: cancellable bounded Codex probes,
same-selection snapshots, guarded persistence, shared flights and retry cooldown.
Release owned translator accounting on request abort without changing prepared
transport verdicts or awaiting producer cancellation.

Own subprocess abort/deadline handling rather than execFile's built-in observer.
Reject the caller promptly while the existing bounded-subprocess helper reaps
actual exit, escalating SIGTERM to SIGKILL after the shared 2-second grace.
Readiness-synchronized Bun children prove termination even when SIGTERM is
ignored; Windows keeps forceful termination and still asserts exit.

Keep Windows removal ownership, Rust diagnostics and workflow changes in their
separate lanes. Refs #6671; this does not establish the Windows leak is resolved.

Carry the read-only Linux/macOS/Windows contract workflow and optional Rust

wp4 APIs, and prove prompt async-executor rejection with independent reaping.
Exclude ACL removal contracts owned by wp1 and isolate fixture event reads

…ion test) (#6847)

* fix: carry remaining #6723 log admission split and fixture drain

39663ff's BigInt picker identity check is already on dev via #6772, so this
keeps that implementation. The rest of the commit that still applies moves the
log-cursor cases into a registered sibling under the current fixture drain,
waits for ACL work before model-arrival fixture removal, and records the
bigint file-id comparison in the Claude Desktop contract. The diagnostic-crate
hunks stay with #6806.

Co-authored-by: mashfromband <matsumoto.yukuhashi@gmail.com>

* fix: keep the test-layout map under the file-size ratchet

The new log-admission entry shares a line with the management-auth entry so
scripts/test-layout/layout.json stays at 1999 lines.

Adds .github/workflows/catalog-async-contracts.yml and the Rust contract crate under scripts/diagnostics/windows-version-control/, carrying the CI part of #6723. Portable contracts run the real Bun catalog modules on Linux, macOS and Windows; push runs are limited to dev/main/preview, PR runs cancel superseded runs, and the toolchain is pinned to 1.99.0.
