Summary

  • bump the standalone usage CLI from 6.1.0 to 6.2.0 and refresh every platform URL/checksum in mise.lock
  • bump usage-argv, usage-derive, usage-lib, usage-rs, usage-test, and usage-validation to 6.2.0
  • regenerate the usage spec, CLI docs, manpage, task docs, and shell completions with usage 6.2.0
  • update the task-help e2e expectation for 6.2.0's description-column alignment

Upstream review

Usage 6.2.0 adds explicit built-in help metadata, compact Markdown references, improved help wrapping/alignment, completion metadata and tracing improvements, and new parser/spec capabilities. Mise compiles without source adaptation; the checked-in generated outputs reflect the new renderer behavior.

The update was started only after both upstream publication workflows completed successfully:

Tests

  • cargo check --locked
  • cargo test --locked --bin mise cli:: (228 passed)
  • mise run render
  • mise run test:e2e e2e/cli/test_help_without_tasks e2e/cli/test_usage_completion_shim_offline e2e/cli/test_completion_avoids_project_config e2e/tasks/test_task_help e2e/tasks/test_task_usage_cmd
  • mise run lint-fix
  • mise --locked x usage@6.2.0 -- usage --version
  • mise lock usage --dry-run --json

AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: openai/gpt-5; version: unavailable.

Note

Low Risk
Dependency and generated-artifact update only; no mise command logic changes. Completions gain extension filtering, so shell UX should be smoke-tested.

Overview
Bumps the usage toolchain from 6.1.x to 6.2.0 (usage-rs/usage-lib crates, standalone usage tool in mise.lock, and Cargo.lock). Mise source does not need adaptation.

Regenerates shell completions so file completion can filter by extension (bash/zsh/fish/PowerShell). Regenerates CLI markdown, manpage, and related help output in the compact 6.2.0 format (inline flags, -h --help on commands). Tweaks the task-help e2e expectation for the new description-column alignment.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds extension-aware file completion for Zsh, Bash, Fish, and PowerShell. It adds explicit help flags across the CLI specification and regenerates CLI documentation, the man page, task documentation, and related expected output.

Changes

Completion behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extension-aware file suggestions
completions/_mise, completions/mise.bash, completions/mise.fish, completions/mise.ps1
Completion parsers read extension metadata. Directories remain available. Files must match the supplied extensions. PowerShell also parses display text and completion-kind metadata.

CLI specification and generated output

Layer / File(s) Summary
Built-in help flags
mise.usage.kdl, mise.toml
The CLI specification adds -h --help across commands and converts selected single-line declarations to block form. The usage dependency changes from 6.1.0 to 6.2.0.
Generated CLI references
docs/cli/*, tasks.md, docs/public/llms.txt
CLI references use compact usage, argument, and flag lists. Help flags and selected aliases are documented.
Generated man page and expectations
man/man1/mise.1, e2e/generate/*, e2e/tasks/test_task_help, e2e/tasks/test_task_info
The man page includes the expanded command and help-option data. Expected documentation and task-help output match the regenerated format.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4bca0

This update changes generated CLI documentation and metadata, but the current output still contains inconsistent or incomplete option descriptions and aliases that could mislead users or be lost on regeneration. The change is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up on these documentation inconsistencies.

Poem

I’m a rabbit with tabs in a row,
Matching file types as they go.
Help flags bloom wide,
Docs list options side by side,
And clean completions now show.
