Addresses discussion #8269.

The report

mise watch --clear=reset --restart <task> leaves the terminal without echo after Ctrl+C — you type blindly until you run reset. --clear=clear is fine. Reported on 2026.2.17, confirmed by a second reporter on 2026.3.9.

The underlying reset is watchexec's, not mise's. watchexec --clear=reset --restart -- tail -f, with no mise involved, loses ECHO ECHOE ECHOK IEXTEN on Ctrl+C on both Linux and macOS. mise runs watchexec, so mise puts the terminal back.

What was wrong with the existing fix

#8273 added a save/restore around the watchexec call the same day the report came in. Two problems.

The restore was on a path Ctrl+C did not take. Until 2026.7.16, mise called std::process::exit from the signal path, so the process was gone before the line after cmd.run() was reached — the restore never ran, and the report stayed reproducible for five months after it was closed. That is what the second reporter hit. Bisecting releases under a pty:

--clear=reset, Ctrl+C
2026.2.17 (as reported) ECHO lost
2026.2.21 (first with #8273) ECHO lost
2026.3.9 (second reporter) ECHO lost
2026.7.15 ECHO lost
2026.7.16 ok

2026.7.16 is #11440, "defer process termination", which replaced that std::process::exit with an unwinding exit. So the fix started working as a side effect of an unrelated refactor, and nothing near the code says so. run_with_exit_signal still drops the command future when the ctrl-c branch wins — exit_signal_drops_command_future_before_returning asserts exactly that — so the straight-line restore only survives because cmd.run() blocks without yielding. Restoring from Drop covers a normal return, ?, and a dropped future alike, without depending on that.

It saved the wrong terminal. It read stdin, but the flags watchexec changes belong to the controlling terminal. Running watchexec with stdin on /dev/null and stdout on a second pty, the terminal left without echo is still the controlling one — the second pty is untouched. And tcgetattr(stdin) simply fails when stdin is not a terminal, so mise watch --clear=reset < /dev/null, and the same command with a pipe on stdin, captured nothing and restored nothing. This one still reproduces on 2026.8.10. The guard now prefers /dev/tty, falling back to the standard streams only when there is no controlling terminal to open.

Verification

Under a pty: send ^C to the foreground process group, then compare the line discipline's flags before and after. The harness was checked in both directions first — plain tail -f reports no change, and sh -c 'stty -echo; sleep 30' is caught.

2026.8.10 this change
one terminal, stdin = tty ok ok
one terminal, stdin = /dev/null ECHO lost ok
one terminal, stdin = pipe ECHO lost ok
two terminals, stdin = ctty ECHO lost ok
two terminals, stdin = /dev/null ECHO lost ok

Four unit tests cover the descriptor search and the restore-on-drop against real ptys, including two at once, so neither half can regress silently the way the last fix did. cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean.

One thing worth knowing

The root cause is upstream: watchexec's --clear=reset does not restore the line discipline it resets when it is interrupted. mise papering over it is the right call regardless — mise spawned the process — but if you would rather this were fixed there, it is a watchexec issue and I can file it.

The watch CLI now uses usage_rs for argument parsing and help rendering. Unix watch execution captures terminal attributes through TerminalState and restores them on guard drop. Tests cover parsing, terminal discovery, and restoration.

Greptile Summary

This PR replaces straight-line terminal restoration with a Unix drop guard that captures the controlling terminal and restores its attributes whenever the watch execution scope ends.

  • Prefers /dev/tty, with standard-stream fallback when no controlling terminal can be opened.
  • Retains owned descriptors until restoration.
  • Adds PTY-backed tests for redirected descriptors, restoration on drop, and multiple terminals.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains.

`mise watch --clear=reset` can leave the terminal without echo after
Ctrl+C: watchexec's reset clears termios flags and does not put them back
when it is interrupted, so you type blindly until you run `reset`.

#8273 added a save/restore around the watchexec call for this. Two things
were wrong with it.

The restore sat on the straight-line path after the child exits, which
the ctrl-c path did not take. Until 2026.7.16 mise called
`std::process::exit` from the signal path, so the restore never ran at
all — the report was still reproducible five months after it was closed,
which is what the second reporter hit. Replacing that exit with an
unwinding one (#11440) is what made it start working, incidentally.
`run_with_exit_signal` still drops the command future when the ctrl-c
branch wins, and there is a test asserting exactly that, so the ordering
this depends on is not stated anywhere near the code that needs it.
Restoring from `Drop` covers a normal return, `?`, and a dropped future
alike.

It also saved the wrong terminal. It read stdin, but the flags watchexec
changes are the *controlling* terminal's — with stdin on /dev/null and
stdout on a second terminal, the controlling terminal is still the one
left without echo. `tcgetattr(stdin)` simply fails when stdin is not a
terminal, so `mise watch --clear=reset < /dev/null`, and the same command
with a pipe on stdin, captured nothing and restored nothing. Still
reproducible on 2026.8.10. Now `/dev/tty` is preferred, falling back to
the standard streams only when there is no controlling terminal to open.

Measured under a pty, sending ^C to the process group and comparing
termios before and after:

                                    2026.8.10 this change
one terminal, stdin = tty ok ok
one terminal, stdin = /dev/null ECHO lost ok
one terminal, stdin = pipe ECHO lost ok
two terminals, stdin = tty ECHO lost ok
two terminals, stdin = /dev/null ECHO lost ok

The last row is why the fallback captures every terminal it finds rather
than the first: restoring one terminal twice is idempotent, so the common
case where the standard streams share a terminal needs no deduplication.

Four unit tests cover the descriptor search and the restore-on-drop
against real ptys, including two at once.

Discussion #8269.
