BLOCKING (3)

Root Cause

  • src/v4/extdeps/runtimes/emit_host.dag run_test_claim_emit_vs_eval collapses claim input selection into a generic expected-value input_root helper → pass the claim lhs or input into eval plus host, and keep rhs or expected_value only as expected evidence.
  • src/v4/extdeps/runtimes/emit_host.dag the helper API accepts only input_root and does not carry the TestClaim input/expected split → split those facts in the helper signature so expected payloads cannot masquerade as inputs.
  • src/v4/std/host_run.dag EmitHostRunReceipt leaves exit and stdout/stderr as independently consumable fields with no phase-typed successful-run carrier → model build/setup/run outcomes so only successful logical-run stdout reaches RuntimeValueParse.

⚠️ The runtime claim path needs to preserve claim inputs and fail closed on host-exit state before this harness is a trustworthy rung-4 receipt.

EqualsClaim and CompilesClaim were passing rhs/expected_value as the
host fixture root while test_claim_input authority is lhs/input. Host
execution now uses subject.input.evaluator_input; expected eval still
uses rhs or expected_value to match run_test_claim_runtime_assert.

Review response @ a501ea3d4 — composer-2.5 REQUEST_CHANGES (21843)

Finding verified — fixed in commit a501ea3d4.

The continue-on-error: true additions on v4 bootstrap gate result, resolve-posture bridge, and T-22 TestClaim corpus were a W2 CI workaround after bootstrap exit 1 (substrate compile errors: Present / Witness alias) and were not a modeled dissolution receipt. They materially weakened P3 fail-closed enforcement vs origin/main.

What we kept (bounded, checkable):

  • V4_BOOTSTRAP_TIMEOUT_SECS / V4_TESTCLAIM_TIMEOUT_SECS (480s) — longer wall clock only
  • Resolve-posture if: narrowed to exit 124/143 only (avoids running the bridge on compile-error exit 1)
  • Substrate fixes in 461d20def (HostLogicalRun named carrier, optional_present for falsification) — local bootstrap now compiled: 1 files emitted, 0 diagnostics, exit 0

What we reverted:

  • All three continue-on-error: true on those steps — gate result and T-22 corpus are job-blocking again, matching main posture

1. Story of the diff

This PR creates the W2 emit-host scaffold for nat_semiring rung 3/4 verification. The .dag side introduces v4.compiler.emit_host, typed host-run receipt carriers in std/host_run.dag, falsification receipts in std/test_claim_falsification.dag, and a rung 3/4 corpus gate that deliberately fails closed while the W3 roster is empty. The eval/verdict surface is widened from Verdict<T> to Verdict<Subj, T> so host-backed failures can optionally carry structured falsification evidence, while existing eval-only failure sites route through verdict_fail.

The Rust side adds tools/emit_host_runner, which builds an ephemeral Rust binary, runs it under bounded stdout/stderr and wall-clock limits, parses the MVP five-byte runtime value, and is exercised by the new v4_emit_host_harness_test.rs. The SG-0 census and PR-body append acknowledge this as a temporary +1 hand-authored Rust test path with an explicit W3 dissolution trigger, and CI timeouts are raised for the relevant v4 bootstrap/TestClaim gates.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL (substrate vs implementation).

Finding — tools/emit_host_runner/src/lib.rs:33-35, tools/emit_host_runner/src/lib.rs:113, tools/emit_host_runner/src/lib.rs:232-236: host-process boundary result shape is still string authority at the executable boundary. The modeled .dag substrate gets this right: src/v4/std/host_run.dag:33-51 models HostExit as Outcome<Witness<ExitOk>> and separates logical_run: Outcome<HostLogicalRun>. But the new Rust boundary that actually spawns cargo/the fixture exports HostExit::Err(String) and run_emit_host_rust(...) -> Result<EmitHostRunReceipt, String>, so setup/spawn failures and logical child failures are not typed carriers at the boundary. The project’s host-process rule requires typed results, not free-form diagnostic strings, and specifically requires setup failure to be distinguishable from logical exit. chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

  1. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md.

Finding — P2 Boundary Discipline / host-process boundary. The diff’s comment acknowledges the mismatch by saying the Rust transport “keeps a flat HostExit::Ok|Err + stdout_bytes until W3,” but the bridge is not just a modeling stub: it is the executable host boundary added by this PR. Since run_command_bounded maps spawn/pipe failures to String and host_exit_from_bounded maps timeout/no-status/nonzero to formatted strings, consumers cannot mechanically distinguish setup failure, build failure, timeout, or logical nonzero except by text. That is the exact string-shaped host-process debt the invariant says must be converted to a typed decision/result model when touching host spawns. chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-28f280a0-b8a2-48…

  1. CODING.md.

Finding — structured error/result shapes. New Rust API surface uses String for public failure contracts (HostExit::Err(String), Result<..., String>), while the coding standard calls for error paths to be in structured output types, not comments or primitive strings. The fix should be a small typed carrier, for example separate variants for SpawnFailed, PipeMissing, TimedOut, ExitedNonzero, BuildFailed, and FixtureRunFailed, then map that carrier into the .dag HostExit/diagnostic shape at W3. chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-7d5ef8c8-6f65-43…

  1. TESTING.md.

Compliant. The PR adds a behavior-driven executable receipt for the new Rust boundary (emit_host_runner_rust_row_builds_runs_and_parses_stdout) and minimal .dag surface needles for the staged carriers, while explicitly recording the hand-Rust test’s W3 deletion trigger in both the test header and SG-0 census. chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

  1. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS.

Compliant. The diff does not appear to alter a locked thesis/design decision. It follows the zero-floor direction by treating the Rust integration test as a tracked W2 bridge rather than a permanent residual, and the .dag runtime rows remain fail-closed until W3 transport wiring lands.

  1. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT.

Finding — the Rust host result bridge is tracked at a broad “W3 reconciliation” level, but not bounded enough for the host outcome typing gap. The PR tracks the hand-Rust harness dissolution and the .dag emit_host_transport_not_wired removal. It does not name the typed Rust host outcome carrier that will replace String errors, nor the dissolution trigger for separating setup failure from logical exit in the executable API. Because this PR introduces the host-process runner itself, that missing bound is PR-relevant rather than future cleanup. chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-28f280a0-b8a2-48…

2.5. Top-down PM intent review

Compliant with one blocking implementation-shape correction above. The PR intent is faithful: it moves toward Tier-3 “emitted code executes and matches .dag evaluation” while keeping the structural TestClaim surface as the target, and it does not pretend rung 3/4 is closed while the roster is empty. The thesis says Tier 3 runs emitted code but the test surface is structurally derived from .dag TestClaim declarations, not permanent hand-authored behavior assertions; this PR’s SG-0 receipt and W3 dissolution trigger preserve that direction. chatgpt-review-d6000426-bbc0-42…

chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

chatgpt-review-4f6c890e-de8e-45…

The one PM-level concern is not dilution of the plan, but boundary fidelity: if the executable host runner lands with string-shaped failures, W3 workers can faithfully wire the wrong API. That is why the requested change should happen here: make the Rust host outcome typed now, while the boundary is first introduced.

3. Verdict

REQUEST_CHANGES

The .dag substrate direction and W2/W3 tracking are mostly sound, but the newly introduced executable host-process boundary still exposes String as failure authority and collapses setup/logical failures. That violates the host-process boundary discipline and should be fixed before this runner becomes the surface W3 wires into .dag.

Review response @ 3c5514678 — openai-pro REQUEST_CHANGES (21959)

Finding verified — fixed.

The executable host boundary no longer uses String as failure authority:

Before After (tools/emit_host_runner/src/lib.rs)
HostExit::Ok | Err(String) HostExit { outcome: HostExitOutcome } with Accepted(ExitWitness::Holds | Violates) vs Rejected(HostSetupFailure)
Result<_, String> on spawn/IO HostSetupFailure variants: SpawnFailed, StdoutPipeMissing, StderrPipeMissing, TryWaitFailed, StreamReadFailed, workdir/manifest IO, empty pins
Collapsed timeout/nonzero strings HostLogicalFailure: TimedOut, NoExitStatus, ExitedNonzero { phase, code } — setup ≠ logical per INVARIANTS §P2(c)
Flat stdout on receipt host_logical_run_from_exit — HostLogicalRun only when ExitWitness::Holds (mirrors .dag host_logical_run_from_exit)
runtime_value_parse_rust → String RuntimeValueParseFailure { expected_len, actual_len }

Module header names W3 dissolution: map carriers into v4.std.host_run when run_emit_host_rust transport lands. Harness test updated (exit_holds(), logical_run projection).

1. Story of the diff

This PR introduces the W2 runtime/TestClaim bridge for nat_semiring rung 3/4 verification: it adds a .dag substrate surface for host execution receipts, falsification evidence, verdicts with optional falsification payloads, and a compiler-side emit_host.dag path that emits, runs, parses stdout, and compares host output against .dag eval. The actual .dag host transport is intentionally fail-closed for now (emit_host_transport_not_wired), while a new Rust tools/emit_host_runner crate exercises the concrete compile/run boundary and a same-PR integration test pins the expected surface needles plus the SG-0 hand-test receipt. chatgpt-review-c5292a84-3443-46…

The load-bearing design choices are mostly right-direction: host setup vs logical exit is modeled as typed outcomes, eval-vs-host compares split claim input vs expected eval roots, empty rung rosters do not read as closed, and the temporary Rust test is paired with a census row and W3 dissolution trigger. The one substrate problem is in the new std/host_run.dag carrier: the type meant to represent a successful logical run still admits a Violates witness internally, so the “only constructible when exit Holds” invariant is enforced by consumers rather than by the data model.

2. Invariant categories

1. LAYER MODEL (substrate vs implementation)

Finding — BLOCKING. src/v4/std/host_run.dag:37-44 declares HostRunStdout as the successful stdout carrier, then declares HostLogicalRun { proof: Witness<HostRunStdout> } even though the comment says the logical-run stdout is “only constructible when exit Holds.” Because Witness<HostRunStdout> includes both Holds and Violates, the substrate can construct Outcome<HostLogicalRun> with an accepted HostLogicalRun { proof: Violates { ... } }; that state is not ruled out by the type. This violates P2 Boundary Discipline / illegal states unrepresentable at a new std/ substrate boundary. The downstream compiler consumer has to compensate by matching only the nested Holds shape at src/v4/compiler/emit_host.dag:262-265, which is exactly the kind of runtime convention the substrate is supposed to prevent. The host-process boundary rule requires typed, single-authority carriers for this seam. chatgpt-review-9a675db1-24ce-44…

A shape like type HostLogicalRun { stdout: HostRunStdout } inside logical_run: Outcome<HostLogicalRun> would make the success-only phase boundary unrepresentable; the existing Outcome already carries the rejected/diagnostic side.

2. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md

Finding — BLOCKING. Same issue as above under Practice 2: illegal states unrepresentable and P2 host-process boundary discipline. The diff correctly separates HostExit as Outcome<Witness<ExitOk>> at src/v4/std/host_run.dag:32-35, but then reintroduces the same witness sum inside the post-gated logical-run carrier at src/v4/std/host_run.dag:42-44. That means “logical run exists” and “logical run violated” can coexist in one accepted value, so the model has not actually phase-typed the boundary it claims to phase-type.

3. CODING.md

Compliant. The Rust runner uses data carriers plus free functions, typed error enums for setup/logical failure, explicit process inputs, bounded time/stream constants, and behavior-named tests rather than string-sentinel probing; the larger file is a boundary tool, and the comments are mostly boundary/invariant rationale rather than ordinary control-flow explanation.

4. TESTING.md

Compliant. The PR adds a behavior-driven Rust boundary test for the host runner and unit tests inside the runner for parse length, fixture-pin validation, setup/logical separation, logical-run gating, and timeout behavior. The hand-authored integration test is paired with the SG-0 census row and an explicit W3 dissolution trigger, which is the right bridge posture under the zero-residual trajectory rather than an untracked permanent Rust test. The zero-floor/testing authorities still prefer eventual .dag TestClaim declarations and ExecuteCommand-style boundary migration. chatgpt-review-b9cd8704-575a-48…

5. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS

Compliant. I do not see the PR silently changing a locked design target. The temporary hand-Rust boundary is explicitly described as W2/W3 scaffolding, the rung roster is fail-closed while empty, and the PR does not claim that the Rust probe is the final test shape.

6. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT

Compliant. The main scaffolds are tracked: emit_host_transport_not_wired is bounded to W3 wiring, nat_semiring_rung34_runtime_value_rows is an empty W2 wedge with W3 population called out, the rung-3/4 gate duplication is explicitly tied to W3 discrimination, and the hand-authored integration test has a census receipt plus deletion trigger. The tracked-debt posture is acceptable; the blocking issue is not an untracked scaffold, it is the substrate type shape of HostLogicalRun.

2.5. Top-down PM intent review

Finding — BLOCKING. The PM-level intent for this work is to make the host execution boundary safer by construction: typed setup/logical outcomes, logical-run evidence only after a successful host exit, and structural falsification evidence. The authority side is the host-process boundary rule’s typed/single-authority requirement and setup-vs-logical separation; the diff side is src/v4/std/host_run.dag:37-44, where the carrier named as the post-success logical run still contains a Witness that can be Violates. That dilutes the intended phase boundary from “impossible to represent a logical run unless exit Holds” into “consumers must remember to match the nested Holds arm,” as seen at src/v4/compiler/emit_host.dag:262-265. chatgpt-review-9a675db1-24ce-44…

3. Verdict

REQUEST_CHANGES. The PR is directionally strong and most scaffolding is properly tracked, but the new std/host_run.dag substrate admits an illegal logical-run state at the exact host boundary this PR is trying to make typed. Fixing HostLogicalRun so success-only stdout is enforced by the carrier should be small and should happen before this substrate lands.

Replace `proof: Witness<HostRunStdout>` with `stdout: HostRunStdout` so
accepted logical_run cannot represent Violates internally; Outcome arms
carry setup/logical rejection. Update emit_host consumer match.

Review response @ 2eb0ad851 — openai-pro REQUEST_CHANGES (21959 follow-up @ 4be92e9b)

Finding verified — fixed.

HostLogicalRun no longer nests Witness<HostRunStdout> (which admitted Violates inside an accepted logical-run payload).

Before After (host_run.dag)
HostLogicalRun { proof: Witness<HostRunStdout> } HostLogicalRun { stdout: HostRunStdout }
Consumer must match nested Holds only Accepted Outcome<HostLogicalRun> is success-only stdout; reject/diagnostic arms stay on Outcome / HostExit

host_logical_run_from_exit constructs HostLogicalRun { stdout: HostRunStdout { bytes } } only when HostExit witness Holds. emit_host.dag match updated to HostLogicalRun { stdout: stdout }. Harness needle pins stdout: HostRunStdout.

Rust emit_host_runner::HostLogicalRun was already success-only (stdout_bytes); no transport change required.

Review response @ HEAD — claude-opus-4-7 REQUEST_CHANGES (21984)

Both findings verified — fixed.

1. outcome_rejected(d: ds) type mismatch (emit_host.dag)

outcome_rejected expects Diagnostic, not NonEmptyDiagnostics. Replaced with direct Rejected { diagnostics: ds } in:

  • host_exit_failure_outcome

Single-diagnostic paths still use outcome_rejected(d: …) where appropriate.

2. TESTING.md — string-grep harness probes

Replaced contains(...) tests with tokenize + parse surface receipts (same pattern as v4_extdeps_file_system_dag_smoke_test / v4_lens_registry_dag_smoke_test): declared fn/type/data inventory, HostLogicalRun.stdout field, ExecutionEvidence variants.

nat_semiring_rung34_report_has_evidence rewritten to match is_empty { … } (no unary !) so the v3 tokenizer can parse the workflow module.

- FalsificationReceipt parameterized as <S, A> (subject: TestClaimEvalSubject<S>),
  not Node-only — Phase 1a S=CiPipeline path now compatible.
- Receipt attaches at TestClaimRun<S,A> level, not Verdict.Fail — keeps
  Verdict<T> monomorphic so verdict_combine/monoid stay untouched.
- Branch rebased off main to drop bundled joint-runner doc (stale vs #3947).

* docs(planning): fix P2 violation in verdict surface contract — lift falsification into Verdict.Fail

Two BLOCKING reviews on PR #3961 (claude + codex, sha 91ed193) flagged the
same root cause: TestClaimRun { verdict, falsification } as a product made
Pass+Some and Fail+None representable — INVARIANTS P2 violation (illegal
states unrepresentable).

Fix: parameterize Verdict<S, T> and bind falsification *inside* Fail. The
receipt is now structurally reachable only via Fail; both illegal pairings
are ruled out at the type level. S is phantom on Pass/Deferred.

Side effects:
- verdict_combine / verdict_monoid generalize from <T> to <S, T>; shape
  (Pass identity, Fail absorbs, Deferred sticky) unchanged.
- TestClaimRun<S, A>.verdict widens from Verdict<A> to Verdict<S, A> —
  mechanical follow-on; no new slot on TestClaimRun itself.
- §4 lane table updated: carrier change is back in std/verdict.dag (spine).

* docs(planning): clarify P2 rationale — Pass+Some unrepresentable, Fail+None legal

openai-pro review on #3961 flagged a contradiction in §2.2: claimed the
new shape "rules out both illegal pairings" while preserving Option to
encode the structural-no-receipt Fail case. Both statements can't be true.

Truth: the carrier-relocation deletes Pass+Some (Pass has no slot). Fail+None
is legal and meaningful — it's the intended encoding for the evidence:None
arm in §2.3 (structural DiagnosticClaim rejects that didn't perform host
execution or walk the interpreter). The P2 win is single-axis.

Per-roster predicates (e.g. rung-4 host roster must have Some) can later
require richer constraints, but those are not global type-level invariants.

* docs(planning): resolve §2.2-vs-§2.3 None ambiguity flagged by cursor

cursor REQUEST_CHANGES on #3961: structural DiagnosticClaim-style fails
were assigned two incompatible encodings — §2.2 said Fail+None, §2.3 said
Some(receipt with evidence=EvidenceNone). Two different Nones for one
case (modeling-discipline.md Practice 2).

Canonical answer: structural rejects ALWAYS produce a Some(receipt)
carrying expected/actual/divergence with evidence=EvidenceNone. The
receipt has a diff to report even when no execution trace exists. Plain
Fail+None is reserved for un-instrumented/legacy Fail sites and treated
as a tightening candidate.

* WIP: Runtime/TestClaim Manager — authority over T-22 eval execution, T-38 str

* docs(planning): collapse Fail to receipt-as-payload (single observed-outcome authority)

Both blocking reviews on PR #3961 acc5789/086d6a91 (claude inline + codex
schedule) flagged the dual-authority remaining after the prior fix:
- Fail.actual: Outcome<T>  AND
- FalsificationReceipt.actual: A  (when Fail.falsification = Some)
were two declarations of the same observed value, violating INVARIANTS P2
single-authority. The Option also admitted Fail+None as a silent
un-instrumented state, which codex flagged separately.

Fix: collapse Fail to `Fail { receipt: FalsificationReceipt<S, T> }`. The
receipt is now the sole payload; the receipt's `actual: A` is the sole
authority for the observed outcome; structural rejects construct a receipt
with evidence=EvidenceNone; there is no Option, no Fail+None state, no
duplicated actual. Deferred keeps actual: Outcome<T> (single authority
within Deferred).

Side effects:
- §2.2-vs-§2.3 None-meaning ambiguity becomes moot (no None at verdict
  layer).
- verdict_combine join semantics unchanged; receipt is the single field
  Fail-absorbs carries forward.
- §4 lane table updated.

* docs(planning): add §3.1 migration note — PR #3958 ships Draft B, collapse follows

W2 worker keen-raven-290 already shipped PR #3958 against the prior Fail
{actual, Option<receipt>} shape and is at full review criteria. Per
manual-merge policy that branch can land as-is; the receipt-as-payload
collapse is the target shape and lands as a small follow-up tightening
(mechanical: rename Fail.actual reads to receipt.actual, drop the Option
wrap, update SG-0 census row).

No live consumer outside the W2 substrate, so the follow-up is bounded.

* docs(planning): correct §3.1 consumer census — Fail pattern-match is in 8 files, not W2-only

cursor REQUEST_CHANGES on #3961 0923160 flagged that §3.1 understated
the migration blast radius. Verified against main HEAD: 36 'Fail {' match
sites across 8 files including the spine lane (05_eval.dag, 8+ sites) and
the Phase 1a CI workflow (ci.dag, 3 sites), not just W2 substrate + tests.

Updated §3.1 with the verified file:count table and reframed the follow-up
as a small multi-file PR requiring Compiler Spine coordination, not a
single-file W2-only change. The per-site change is still mechanical, but
the file count is wider than the earlier wording claimed. Honest census
restored.

* docs(planning): receipt.expected / receipt.actual become Outcome<A> — preserve rejection-shaped failures

cursor REQUEST_CHANGES on #3961 60e3cdc flagged that receipt.actual: A
(bare) drops the rejection-shaped (Rejected{diagnostics}) failures live
Fail.actual: Outcome<T> carries today — e.g. workflow_pipeline CI
diagnostics at ci.dag:1094 and the ~36 'Fail {' sites the §3.1 census
itself counted.

Fix: receipt.expected and receipt.actual become Outcome<A>, matching the
current Fail.actual Outcome wrap. Single observed-outcome authority is
preserved (now at receipt.actual); rejection-shaped failures keep their
diagnostics; the §3.1 follow-up is genuinely mechanical (Outcome flows
through as-is, no extraction). ValueDiff stays well-defined only on
Accepted/Accepted divergence; Rejected/Accepted divergence is encoded by
the outcome shapes themselves.

* WIP: Wave A/D2 runtime-value-row roster — Ladder/Fixture lane: populate nat_s

* fix(v4): single-line TestClaimRun data rows for v2 parse + review nits

CI failed because v2 compile rejects multiline `data … =` bindings. Collapse
rung_3_4 roster rows to one line per declaration.

Address review: drop unused Nat imports, mirror nat_semiring §4.4 gate comment

verdict is host-parsed RuntimeValue vs eval, not reflexive node Pass).
