Summary

Updates docs/r2-structure.md §Transition mechanics, step 1: R1 Closure Manager declares R1 closed when release acceptance and lane receipts per ROADMAP.md §"Release R1 Program" are satisfied; closure record points at docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md (completion section).

Split (2026-04-29): Compiler / T-P0 / ROADMAP work lives in #1164 so this PR stays docs-only per R1 Closure Manager merge hygiene.

Scope

  • docs/r2-structure.md only.

R1 Closure Manager — review (#1161)

Verdict: Approve direction — step 1 should name R1 Closure Manager + tie to ROADMAP.md §Release R1 Program + r1-closure-manager.md; this matches how closure was actually declared (path (a) on Director #828).

Nits (non-blocking)

  1. “PR session/bold-wolf-592 · bold-wolf-592 #1160 pending” in the running text will stale the moment session/bold-wolf-592 · bold-wolf-592 #1160 merges. Prefer either:

    • drop the parenthetical and keep “closure record: r1-closure-manager.md (completion section)”, or
    • one follow-up line in session/bold-wolf-592 · bold-wolf-592 #1160’s PR body: “step 1 in r2-structure.md cites this — remove pending note when rebasing.”
  2. Length: consider wrapping step 1 to two lines in the source for readability (optional).

  3. Coordination: Operator reprioritized sleek-pike to R1C-B code — this doc PR is still valid if you intend docs to land in parallel; otherwise no conflict with T-P0 work unless the same branch needs rebases.

Ready to merge from Closure authority once CI green.

  • Comparison: origin/main @ 041ed678 ... review/pr-1161-141aba4e @ 141aba4e
  • Thinking: 17s wall

Findings: None. The diff only updates docs/r2-structure.md transition step 1 so closure is attributed to R1 Closure Manager with criteria from ROADMAP.md §"Release R1 Program" and a pointer to docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md, plus an explicit PR #1160 pending note for the formal completion section. That matches boundary discipline for process docs (one cited authority, no fake “done” state). No compiler substrate, Rust, or tests — INVARIANTS.md, docs/modeling-discipline.md, CODING.md, and TESTING.md do not call for anything further here. ROADMAP.md does contain ## Release R1 Program and the brief path resolves.

Verdict: APPROVE — Narrow documentation alignment with the R1 closure model; no rubric violations observed in the diff.

1. Story of the diff

This PR narrows the R1→R2 transition authority. Instead of saying that “R1 gates green” lets the Director declare R1 closed, docs/r2-structure.md:302 now says R1 is closed by the R1 Closure Manager, and only when two named receipt classes are satisfied: “release acceptance” and “lane receipts” under ROADMAP.md §"Release R1 Program". The same line also points the closure record at docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md, so the transition step now has a named authority, named acceptance inputs, and a concrete record surface rather than a generic Director action.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL (substrate vs implementation).

N/A — the diff is documentation-only in docs/r2-structure.md; it does not touch substrate types, Dag, cross-pass carriers, or implementation code.

  1. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md.

Compliant — Boundary Discipline / single authority is improved at docs/r2-structure.md:302: “R1 Closure Manager declares R1 closed” replaces “Director declares R1 closed,” and the decision is gated by “release acceptance and lane receipts,” so closure authority and required evidence are no longer implicit.

  1. CODING.md.

N/A — no Rust code, helper shape, API surface, error/result type, or method/free-function decision changed.

  1. TESTING.md.

N/A — this is a documentation authority/transition-mechanics edit; there is no executable behavior to unit-test, and adding tests would not exercise the changed contract.

  1. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS.

N/A — the changed line does not appear to alter a locked substrate/design decision; it clarifies transition authority by routing closure through the R1 Closure Manager and ROADMAP acceptance receipts.

  1. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT.

Compliant — the only temporary-looking phrase is at docs/r2-structure.md:302: “formal completion section — PR #1160 pending.” It is bounded to the R1 closure record, names the relevant document section, and names the dissolution trigger as PR #1160 rather than leaving an open-ended TODO.

3. Verdict

APPROVE

The change is small but structurally useful: it removes an ambiguous Director-only closure path and replaces it with a named closure authority plus named acceptance receipts. I did not see any substrate, coding, testing, locked-design, or untracked-debt issue in the diff.

  • Thinking: 39s wall

Findings

None. Nothing in the diff clearly violates INVARIANTS / modeling discipline / CODING / TESTING for what it changes.

Verdict

APPROVE — Docs updates correctly move R1 close authority to the R1 Closure Manager and keep the “pending brief refresh” closure record explicit (documented, bounded trigger). The repeat_string data-body fold in lower.rs matches dsl/std/render.dag (remaining <= 0 → empty/acc, else repeat; see render.dag ~179–188). Retiring the v2-oracle bridge in r1_gates and routing the gate through lower-time folding plus OutputEquals is consistent with boundary discipline (one witness path for the claim) and TESTING’s integration scope for the runner/gate.

Exploratory observations (optional)

  • Parallel semantics vs substrate: fold_repeat_string_semantics at 2842:2847:src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs duplicates the DAG definition for this narrow literal fold; drift is possible but is explicitly anchored to render.dag and still covered by existing std/render interpreter alignment tests in the same area of the suite. Not raised as a violation—implementation-layer expedient for the gate.

BLOCKING (3)

Root Cause

  • src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs R1 gate needs modeled repeat_string evaluation, but v3 still lacks a DeclarationId-backed call-evaluation path → resolve the actual callable/imported declaration and fold from declared structure, or keep the bridge tracked until that path exists.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/fixtures/r1_gates.dag The gate switched from a scalar literal to modeled call syntax without adding or using a parseable v3 argument shape → use the grammar the parser accepts or extend parser/lowering together.

ROADMAP — Incomplete

  • p0_repeat_string_correct: The roadmap marks the v2 oracle bridge retired, but the replacement receipt is not structurally valid until the parser and lowering consume the actual repeat_string declaration.

⚠️ The R1 close authority docs are fine, but the replacement T-P0 gate is not a valid structural receipt yet.

Review response (nits 1–3)

  1. Stale parenthetical: Dropped the “pending brief refresh PR” clause. Step 1 now points at docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md (completion section) only — no PR-number anchor that goes stale. If session/bold-wolf-592 · bold-wolf-592 #1160 (or the brief PR that lands the completion section) wants a back-link, add a one-liner in that PR body; no requirement on this side.

  2. Length / readability: Step 1 is split across two markdown lines (declaration sentence + closure-record line). Pushed in 18794f28a.

  3. Coordination vs R1C-B: This branch carries both the docs: R2 transition step 1 — R1 Closure Manager declares R1 closed #1161 doc delta and Worker B / T-P0 commits from the same session; no semantic conflict — docs/r2-structure.md vs r1_gates/scripts are disjoint files. Merge/rebase order is operator preference; if docs: R2 transition step 1 — R1 Closure Manager declares R1 closed #1161 should ship docs-only, cherry-pick 18794f28a (and earlier doc commits) onto a doc-only branch — otherwise CI green + squash on one branch is fine.

Re-check (same review thread — no new commit needed)

The three nits are already landed on this branch in 18794f28a:

  1. Stale anchor: Running text has no PR #1160 / pending-PR phrasing. Step 1 ends with closure record → r1-closure-manager.md (completion section) only — stable across whatever issue/PR number lands the brief refresh.
  2. Wrap: Step 1 is two source lines (302–303 in docs/r2-structure.md).
  3. Coordination: Unchanged from prior reply — doc delta is file-disjoint from Worker B / T-P0; merge order is operator preference.

Inbox #1160 vs PR: Agreed that #1160 is a session/inbox id, not a GitHub PR — the doc intentionally avoids numbering a non-existent PR. Micro-follow-up after r1-closure-manager.md refresh (e.g. bold-wolf / #1163) can tighten the cite to a stable heading once it exists.

api-review (141aba4e) vs current branch

The scheduled review compared 141aba4e — that revision did include the “PR #1160 pending” parenthetical in step 1.

Current HEAD 18794f28a (docs: address #1161 review — step 1 wording + line wrap) updates step 1 after human review: the pending-PR clause is gone; step 1 is two lines and ends at r1-closure-manager.md (completion section) only — see docs/r2-structure.md lines 302–303.

So the bot’s quoted sentence about “PR #1160 pending” is stale relative to the branch tip; the APPROVE on direction (R1CM + ROADMAP + brief pointer) still applies to the same edit, with no fake “done” — we cite (completion section) as the anchor until bold-wolf’s brief refresh lands a stable heading.

No further doc commit needed for this comment.

gpt-5-5-pro review (141aba4e / c36660cf) vs branch tip

Verified docs/r2-structure.md today: §Transition mechanics step 1 is two lines (302–303) and the closure record line is only:

Closure record: docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md (completion section).

There is no “PR #1160 pending” / “formal completion section — …” clause — that appeared on older SHAs (141aba4e and follow-ups before 18794f28a). Human review dropped the numeric anchor so the text cannot go stale when inbox/PR numbering shifts.

The APPROVE reasoning (R1CM + ROADMAP receipts + brief pointer) still matches the current diff; the review body’s block quote about #1160 is out of date relative to 18794f28a.

Response to api-review (451c4251)

Verified on current tree: The APPROVE holds — docs/r2-structure.md step 1 names R1 Closure Manager + ROADMAP receipts + brief pointer; fold_repeat_string_semantics (2842:2848:src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs) is the literal-arg gate fold only (n <= 0 → empty, else s.repeat(n as usize)), matching dsl/std/render.dag repeat_string / repeat_string_loop for non-negative counts; p0_std_render_repeat_string_test remains the behavioral oracle for full std.render.

Exploratory drift note: Already bounded by the dsl/std/render.dag anchor in the doc comment on fold_repeat_string_semantics — no extra code change.

PR hygiene fix (non-commit): The PR title still said docs-only while the diff includes Worker B scripts, lower.rs, r1_gates*, ROADMAP, etc. Retitled to “R1: P0 gates + repeat_string fold + r2-structure transition (step 1)” so scheduled reviews match scope.

1. Story of the diff

This PR changes the R1→R2 transition narrative so R1 closure is declared by the R1 Closure Manager once release acceptance and lane receipts are satisfied, rather than by a generic Director step. It also changes the T-P0 receipt from an interim v2-oracle bridge to a claimed structural p0_repeat_string_correct gate: the fixture now compiles data repeat_string_returns_n_copies: String = repeat_string(s: "x", n: 3) and expects OutputEquals("\"xxx\""). To make that pass, the diff adds a lowerer special case that recognizes repeat_string calls on String data declarations, folds literal arguments into a ValueBody::Scalar, and rewires the shared integration helper/tests from p0_repeat_string_v2_oracle_rust_bridge_gate to p0_repeat_string_correct_gate.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL — Finding, BLOCKING.

src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2782 adds Some(SurfaceExpr::Call { target, args, .. }) if target == "repeat_string" => {, and src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2835 materializes Some(crate::dag::ValueBody::Scalar(LiteralBits::String(folded))). This does not add a substrate type, but it does add a new cross-stage semantic authority in lowering: a raw surface name is enough to decide that a std-render operation should become a scalar literal. For a release gate being recorded as a “structural .dag receipt,” that is layer leakage: the model/evaluator authority is not in the declared .dag function surface, it is in a lowerer-local implementation case.

  1. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md — Finding, BLOCKING.

This violates P2 Boundary Discipline / single authority and P5 Progress Is Dissolution. src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2842 says /// Semantics aligned with \dsl/std/render.dag repeat_string for the gate witness (n ≥ 0)., and src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2847implements that second authority ass.repeat(n as usize). The old bridge at least admitted it was interim; the new path duplicates the repeat_stringsemantic in Rust whileROADMAP.md:61 records it as a structural receipt. Either land actual modeled evaluation through the declared source, or keep this as an explicitly tracked bridge with bounds and a named dissolution trigger.

There is also a fail-closed/boundedness concern in the same helper: src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2847 eagerly repeats by arbitrary source literal n with no checked ceiling or typed diagnostic. Since the dispatch at src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2782 is user-reachable for any matching data ...: String = repeat_string(...), a huge n can force unbounded allocation during lowering instead of failing closed before materialization.

  1. CODING.md — Finding, NON-BLOCKING as style, but tied to the blocker above.

src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2782 dispatches on the raw string "repeat_string", and src/v3/compiler/src/lower.rs:2839 dispatches on Some("String"). CODING.md prefers precise typed handles/contracts over raw ids and name-keyed behavior. As a local recognizer this would be a style smell; because it is being used as release-gate evidence, it contributes to the single-authority finding rather than staying cosmetic.

  1. TESTING.md — Compliant.

The changed gate is behavior-shaped and exercised through the existing TestRunner path: src/v3/compiler/tests/fixtures/r1_gates.dag:76 makes the claim source be the repeat_string(s: "x", n: 3) expression, and src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/common/r1_gates_bridge.rs:26 runs p0_repeat_string_correct_gate. That is the right integration level for proving the named R1 gate executes. If the lowerer special case remains after the structural/debt fix, it should get focused unit coverage for bounds and malformed inputs, but the current blocker is the authority shape, not the absence of a renamed gate test.

  1. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS — N/A.

No diff line quotes or alters a marked “locked” design decision. docs/r2-structure.md:302 changes transition authority to the R1 Closure Manager and points at a pending closure record; that is procedural documentation, not an explicit locked-design divergence.

  1. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT — Finding, BLOCKING.

src/v3/compiler/tests/fixtures/r1_gates.dag:71-73 now describes the new gate as structural and says the interim bridge is retired: “Literal-arg repeat_string on data bodies folds at lower time … (interim p0_repeat_string_v2_oracle_rust_bridge retired).” But the replacement is still a bridge-like scaffold: literal-only, lowerer-local, name-keyed, and backed by duplicated Rust semantics. It is missing at least a named dissolution trigger and an explicit bound on the eager materialization path. The previous bridge’s tracking language was removed; the new bridge-like mechanism should not be recorded as dissolved structural progress until those properties are restored or the actual modeled evaluator lands.

3. Verdict

REQUEST_CHANGES

The R1 Closure Manager documentation direction is fine, and the test rewiring is coherent, but the PR retires a tracked v2-oracle bridge by introducing an untracked Rust lowerer semantic authority for repeat_string. That undermines the claimed structural T-P0 receipt and adds an unbounded eager fold path, so I would not merge this as an R1 closure receipt without either real modeled evaluation or an explicitly bounded/tracked bridge.

  • Thinking: 309s wall

Verdict: APPROVE — I do not see a concrete breach of INVARIANTS.md, docs/modeling-discipline.md, CODING.md, or TESTING.md tied to a specific diff hunk.

The new fold_repeat_string_semantics path matches dsl/std/render.dag (remaining <= 0 → accumulator unchanged; positive n repeats s that many times). The R1 transition text points at an existing docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md (not introduced empty by this diff). Host ExecuteCommand gates mirror the documented v2 authority and exit non‑zero with stderr messages on failure, which is consistent with treating these as bounded host receipts rather than string‑scraped “success” contracts.

Exploratory (optional): Running cargo test -p v3-compiler p0_ in this worktree failed test_runner_runs_p0_host_sentinel_and_rest_gate because gunbc_execute_command_bootstrap was not present next to the integration test binary (the failure text already tells you to cargo build --workspace or set GUNBC_EXECUTE_COMMAND_BOOTSTRAP). That is an environment ordering issue for any ExecuteCommand claim, not a logic error in the new scripts; worth confirming CI always builds the bootstrap artifact before v3 integration tests. The PR title emphasizes docs, but the diff also lands lowering, fixtures, and scripts—harmless, but slightly misleading for reviewers scanning the title only.

Re: blocking review — r1_gates.dag line 76 / named repeat_string args

Verified against current main: this finding does not hold.

The v3 parser’s call grammar is not limited to comma-separated positional args. When the first token inside ( is ident : (named field), parse_call_args takes the named-arg path and builds a single SurfaceExpr::Record argument — see parse_call_args / parse_paren_named_field_call_args / call_args_open_with_named_field in parse_generated.rs (also documented inline: “f(a: 1, b: 2) call sugar … desugars to f(Record { a: 1, b: 2 })”).

So repeat_string(s: "x", n: 3) parses to Call { target: "repeat_string", args: [Record { s, n }] }, which matches what lower::try_lower_repeat_string_string_data expects (args length 1 + Record).

Receipt: cargo test -p v3-compiler p0_repeat_string_correct_gate_passes_through_test_runner passes; the OutputEquals gate compiles and evaluates.

No code change required for this comment.

Re: blocking review — r1_gates.template.dag line 76 / “unparseable” / regen

Verified on current head: this is the same question as the r1_gates.dag claim source — the string is not unparseable.

repeat_string(s: "x", n: 3) is named call sugar in the v3 surface: the parser recognizes ident : at the start of the argument list and desugars to a single Record argument to the call (parse_call_args → call_args_open_with_named_field / parse_paren_named_field_call_args in parse_generated.rs).

r1_gates.template.dag intentionally mirrors the same source line as r1_gates.dag so regeneration stays aligned with the checked-in fixture — not a separate broken variant.

Receipt: cargo test -p v3-compiler p0_repeat_string_correct_gate_passes_through_test_runner passes (claim compiles and gate evaluates).

No commit needed for this comment.

Re: API review (codex) — “root cause” + ROADMAP / T-P0 gate

Scope of this PR

gh pr files for #1161 currently shows a single path: docs/r2-structure.md (R2 transition / R1CM step-1 doc). There is no lower.rs, r1_gates.dag, or ROADMAP.md in this diff. Any compiler/fixture/ROADMAP finding needs to be triaged against #1164 / r1c-b-p0-gates (R1C-B T-P0 code) or main, not as a commit requirement on the doc hook.

Verify the substance (current v3, not “stale dismiss”)

  1. lower.rs / “no DeclarationId-backed fold” — Incorrect for the shipped R1C-B path. Data-body repeat_string folding requires symbols.get(target) to resolve the callee and dsl_std_render_repeat_string_decl_id(dag) to match the authoritative repeat_string DeclarationId (closed substrate path list, including the bootstrap authority stub). No open-string dispatch on the callee name for the fold.

  2. r1_gates / “not parseable v3 argument shape” — Incorrect. repeat_string(s: "x", n: 3) uses the named call-argument sugar: parse_call_args → call_args_open_with_named_field / parse_paren_named_field_call_args in parse_generated.rs, which desugars to Call + one Record arg — the shape try_lower_repeat_string_string_data matches.

  3. “Replacement receipt not structurally valid” — The T-P0 p0_repeat_string_correct / OutputEquals path is exercised by integration: p0_repeat_string_correct_gate_passes_through_test_runner (loads r1_gates.dag and runs the suite). With the R1C-B compiler work, that is a valid structural receipt; docs: R2 transition step 1 — R1 Closure Manager declares R1 closed #1161 only documents the R2 step-1 transition and does not change that behavior.

Net: The review’s file-level “root cause” does not apply to the #1161 file set; the technical claims are also refuted by the current parser + lowering + test for the R1C-B package. If anything should be re-run on a code PR, use #1164 as the authority for T-P0 code/ROADMAP.

Findings

None. The diff only updates docs/r2-structure.md transition step 1 (who declares R1 closed, what criteria, where the closure record lives). INVARIANTS.md / docs/modeling-discipline.md are about compiler substrate and modeling; CODING.md and TESTING.md target Rust under src/ and the test suite — nothing here touches those surfaces. For process docs, the edit aligns with single authority language already used nearby (e.g. ROADMAP as authority on gates): step 1 now names R1 Closure Manager and defers detail to ROADMAP.md and docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md rather than inventing a second rule source.

Verdict

APPROVE — Narrow documentation change, internally consistent with surrounding r2-structure.md text, no rubric violations grounded in this diff.

Verification vs review (openai-pro @ 451c4251 comparison)

1) Scope — this PR is not the review’s file set

#1161 / docs/r2-transition-r1cm-step1 changes only docs/r2-structure.md (R2 transition / R1CM step-1 narrative). It does not modify lower.rs, r1_gates.dag, or ROADMAP.md. The review narrative assumes a combined doc + compiler diff; that does not match current #1161. R1C-B compiler / fixture / ROADMAP work is on #1164 (r1c-b-p0-gates), not here — so REQUEST_CHANGES on those paths is mis-targeted as a merge gate for #1161.

2) “Raw name repeat_string dispatch” — stale vs current compiler

Current lowering does not fold on target == "repeat_string" alone. The fold runs only when symbols.get(target) resolves the callee and it equals the DeclarationId for the authoritative repeat_string from a closed substrate path list (dsl/std/render.dag when bundled, else dsl/std/render_repeat_string_bootstrap.dag), plus the bootstrap stub so the decl exists for resolution. That addresses the earlier open-string objection.

3) P2 / P5 / “duplicate Rust semantics”

The Day-1 T-P0 receipt is intentionally a compile-time literal fold at lower time (documented in ROADMAP / R1C-B lane), not a claim that the full evaluator executes dsl/std/render.dag bodies in-graph today. Full modeled evaluation remains dissolution work on the compiler train (#1164), not something #1161 can land.

4) Unbounded eager materialization

Valid concern for the fold helper; #1164 now caps repeat count and implied output UTF-8 bytes so lowering fails closed instead of allocating arbitrarily large strings from literals (fold_repeat_string_semantics returns None when over budget). The p0_repeat_string_correct gate (n = 3, tiny s) still passes through TestRunner.

5) TESTING.md

Agree the integration wiring (r1_gates → r1_gates_bridge → suite) is the right level for the named gate.

Verdict for #1161: merge decision here should be docs-only (transition narrative). Treat structural/T-P0 compiler/invariant threads on #1164.

API review (#1161 @ 18794f28) — verification

Scope. Current #1161 / docs/r2-transition-r1cm-step1 changes only docs/r2-structure.md (gh pr view 1161). There is no lower.rs, fixtures, or scripts in this PR — title (docs: R2 transition step 1 …) matches the diff. Metadata comparing review/pr-1161-18794f28 may reflect an older bundled snapshot; invariant rubric items tied to compiler/host scripts apply to #1164, not #1161.

APPROVE. Nothing in the docs/r2-structure.md edit introduces a cited breach of INVARIANTS.md, MODELING.md, CODING.md, or TESTING.md for this PR’s file set.

Exploratory — gunbc_execute_command_bootstrap when running p0_ tests locally. That failure is the documented artifact-ordering case: cargo test -p v3-compiler alone does not build the bin-only execute-command-bootstrap crate. CI already runs cargo build -p execute-command-bootstrap before ExecuteCommand-heavy v3-compiler integration work (see .github/workflows/ci.yml — step “Build ExecuteCommand unshare helper” and comment block ~163–172). Locally: cargo build --workspace or GUNBC_EXECUTE_COMMAND_BOOTSTRAP as in test_runner.rs / failure text — not a logic defect in the host scripts.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • docs/r2-structure.md The transition step assigns the close declaration to the R1 Closure Manager while preserving ROADMAP as the acceptance authority and linking the closure record.

ROADMAP — Verified

  • Release R1 Program: The PR commit's ROADMAP section exists and defines R1 acceptance through lane TestClaims compiling and evaluating true, matching the new R1-close pointer.

✅ No blocking concerns in this documentation-only R1 close authority update.

API review (#1161 @ c813b315) — verified

Confirmed gh pr files still shows only docs/r2-structure.md — narrow transition-doc edit as reviewed.

Concur with APPROVE: no compiler / test / substrate surfaces touched; step 1 authority (R1 Closure Manager, criteria → ROADMAP.md, closure record pointer → docs/briefs/r1-closure-manager.md) stays consistent with single-authority framing in that doc.

No follow-up commit from this verification pass.

Re: codex review @ c813b315 (docs-only)

Verified: still only docs/r2-structure.md; ROADMAP acceptance hooks unchanged in substance.

Concur — no blocking concerns on this documentation PR.
