🚀 Pull Request Checklist

Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Before we review your pull request, please make sure the following items are complete.

✅ Pre-commit Checks

  • I have installed pre-commit by running pip install pre-commit (or used your preferred method).
  • I have installed the hooks with pre-commit install.
  • I have run the hooks manually with pre-commit run --all-files and fixed any reported issues.

If you are unsure about how to set up pre-commit, see the pre-commit documentation.

🧪 Tests

  • Tests have been added or updated as needed.
  • All tests are passing (unittest, etc.).

🔬 Experimental Track

  • This PR is experimental: it adds or changes code under flashinfer/experimental/ and/or an @flashinfer_experimental_api. Tracking issue: #
    • The tracking issue names an owner, the reason for the experimental path, and a graduation plan with a target release.
    • Core changes are limited to a thin entry point (signature, shared validation, feature-gate check, backend selection, handoff).
    • Tests live in tests/experimental/ and were validated on the intended hardware; a runnable example is included.
    • Nothing is registered in flashinfer/aot.py, and no experimental backend is reachable from backend="auto" without FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1. (Calling an @flashinfer_experimental_api or naming a backend explicitly is itself the opt-in and needs no environment variable.)
    • Test scope declared below. The experimental CI lane runs exactly these targets, so keep them as narrow as the change allows.
# One target per line: a directory or a file. (A pytest ::selector is not
# supported -- the sharding runner cannot consume one.) Must be under
# tests/experimental/ and must exist. Delete these comment lines and add yours, e.g.
#
# tests/experimental/test_my_backend.py
# tests/experimental/my_backend/
#
# Declaring the whole tree (tests/experimental/) is allowed but means every
# experimental PR pays for every other feature's tests, in every matrix cell.

Walkthrough

SM120 MXFP8 × MXFP4 cuDNN Frost templates now set 128-byte TMA L2 promotion on data descriptors. The multi-GEMM footprint calculation budgets A and B rows separately. Selected-kernel records and documentation reflect updated configurations, export revisions, and shortlist measurements.

Changes: SM120 mixed-format kernel updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-operand shared-memory budgeting
flashinfer/fused_moe/backends/cudnn_frost/device.py
The multi-GEMM footprint calculation uses separate A- and B-side row sizes, including the 64-byte packed E2M1 side of a mixed pair.
TMA L2 promotion
flashinfer/fused_moe/backends/cudnn_frost/artifacts/mxfp8_mxfp4/sources/*
The listed SM120 MXFP8 × MXFP4 FC1 and FC2 source variants explicitly set 128-byte L2 promotion on A and B data descriptors.
Selected kernels and export records
flashinfer/fused_moe/backends/cudnn_frost/artifacts/mxfp8_mxfp4/cudnn_frost_selected_kernels.json, flashinfer/fused_moe/backends/cudnn_frost/README.md
The manifest updates source hashes and tile dimensions and adds a producer revision. The README records export revisions, promotion settings, and shortlist remeasurement details.

Explanation

The title "Resolve MXFP8 x MXFP4 Performance Issue" names the主要 focus of the changeset: the SM120 MXFP8 x MXFP4 kernel artifacts and documentation changes that set explicit 128-byte L2 promotion and correct shared-memory footprint sizing. It is concise and specific. It does not name the mechanism (L2 promotion or footprint fix), but it is not vague or off-topic, so it passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description contains only the unfilled PR template. The Description section has no text explaining what the PR changes or why. Related Issues has no link. The checklist items are all unchecked, and the experimental-tests fence still holds its placeholder comments. The changeset covers many files, including L2 promotion changes, shared-memory footprint changes, a manifest update, and remeasured benchmark notes, and none of this is described. The description is largely incomplete, so the check fails.

Resolution

Fill in the Description section with the change summary and reason. Summarize the L2 promotion change for SM120 MXFP8 x MXFP4 TMA descriptors, the shared-memory footprint fix in device.py, and the updated kernel artifact manifest. Link the related issue under Related Issues, or state that none exists. State the benchmark setup and results, including the cold-L2 remeasurement and the 1024-token bucket. Check the pre-commit and test items that apply, or explain why they do not. Remove the placeholder comments from the experimental-tests fence, or mark the experimental track as not applicable.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 9.09% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 11 functions across 9 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

The SM120 MXFP8 × MXFP4 shortlists were re-measured after the promotion fix
(the ranking changed: the shipped tables, measured on the unpromoted kernels,
kept narrow tiles that had been fastest), cold in L2, through the complete
MoE pipeline with the other stage fixed to its autotuned winner: every legal
FC1 kernel (SwiGLU for the gated class, ReLU2 for the non-gated one, the other
activations taking their class's tiles) ranked by its stage time plus the
requantization launch it does or does not need, every FC2 kernel by its stage
time, uniform routing at every bucket and skewed routing at 128, 512 and 2048
tokens, geometric mean of the per-routing normalized latencies, two per stage
and profile, with a 1024-token bucket added to the eight shipped ones.

Scope the generic shortlist rules.

This section specifies cold-L2 measurements, skew routing only at 128, 512, and 2048 tokens, and an added 1024-token bucket. Later, the unqualified selection section says every dtype uses the original eight-token list, uniform/skew routing, and warm-L2 timings. Scope the later rules to the other dtypes or update them for MXFP8 × MXFP4 so the documented procedure is reproducible.

Reviewed e0f905671b74 against base 182159eb7af0.

Reviewed the SM120 MXFP8 x MXFP4 TMA hint, operand-specific shared-memory accounting, and refreshed shortlists. No P0 or high-risk P1 found. GPU numerical and performance validation remain unverified in this session; the notes below concern the performance record and benchmark documentation.

[P2] Record the measured performance change and reproducer in the PR description

The Description and Tests sections are still empty, although this PR changes 393 existing shortlist profiles and adds 50 profiles at 1024 tokens. The README gives one RTX PRO 6000 FC1 result (343 to 253 microseconds for E=12, H=7168, I=3072, T=16), but the PR description does not record it or provide the command, compiler/runtime versions, routing/top-k, or full-pipeline comparison used to select the new tables. Fill in the description with the measured before/after result and a reproducible benchmark command, and record what numerical/graph validation was run for the new stage counts and selected pairs. This is required by the repository review guidance for a performance change.

Evidence: Current PR body retains an unfilled template; README lines 921-927 contain one FC1 timing and lines 969-979 describe a revised cold-L2 selection procedure. The shortlist data contains identities, not measurement results. Attribution: New documentation finding from the PR body and checked-in benchmark description.

Validation: Catalog comparison: all 754 expanded kernel records preserve their contracts, tactics, and parameter values; only the 320 SM120 source hashes change. The eight changed source ASTs differ only by 24 l2_128b TMA hint arguments. Checked all 850 shortlist profiles against their referenced kernel contracts. All 400 SM107 profiles are unchanged; the 50 added profiles are SM120/1024-token entries. Independent aligned-buffer accounting fits the 99 KiB SM120 budget for 844 block-scale records across MXFP8, NVFP4, and MXFP8 x MXFP4. The mixed-input change increases stage counts in 135 records, covering 27 distinct tile variants. Ten offline SM120 compilations passed, covering every increased stage count represented by the gated normal BF16, normal quantized, and swap BF16 source families. Each compiled result contains a GPU module; none was launched. CPU suite: 238 passed, 913 skipped, one environment-dependent failure. Both cases of the failing CUDA Graph capability test pass after supplying only the missing get_currently_capturing_graph API in the probe process. The complete test file and cache.py are byte-identical to the parent. Reviewed producer/consumer ring indexing and barrier phases for variable stage counts, generated-source integrity, source-derived tactic cache identity, and next-token-bucket selection. Current trusted main CI files were checked at 182159e; no substantive CI run exists on this head. The two failed summaries have skipped setup/test jobs.

Limitations: No local GPU tests or timing: the shared GPU remains occupied by other work. Offline compilation used the installed CuTe DSL 4.8.1 CUDA 12 compiler component and does not qualify execution on the required CUDA 13.4+ MoELayer stack. The README timing is author-supplied. No independent speedup or numerical accuracy claim is made here. The CPU-only PyTorch build lacks CUDAGraph.get_currently_capturing_graph. The unmodified retain_object-negative test fails because that earlier prerequisite is missing; the focused API shim checks host error handling only.

Approved: no P0 or high-risk P1 found. Remaining findings stay with the owner; merge timing stays with the owner.

Supplementing the independent review with native SM120 validation of e0f905671b74. Thank you for your contribution!

No additional correctness blocker found on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition (188 SMs):

  • 62 focused checks passed, including 22 native grouped-GEMM cases covering all ten FC1 activations plus FC2 in both operand orientations, numerical extremes, uneven/empty groups and graph replay. The 22 TMA-store cases were skipped because SM120 uses STG.
  • 13 full-pipeline checks passed, zero skipped: SwiGLU/ReLU2/SwiGLU-step, BF16 versus fused FP8 intermediate, linear/swizzled scales, replay after changing routing and scale data, and graph ownership after plan/weight-cache eviction. These ran on PyTorch 2.14.1 with the required graph-retention APIs; no compatibility shim was used. The lower-level checks used PyTorch 2.13. Both used CuTe DSL 4.8.0.
  • An independent comparison exercised 20 candidate pairs from the actual old/new packaged pools at E=12, H=7168, I=3072, top-k=2, SwiGLU and uniform routing. All matched a quantized reference (all rows at T=16; 16 sampled rows at T=1024, maximum relative L2 error 1.8e-5). Five output-poisoned replays per pair were bitwise repeatable over the complete output.

For the best measured candidate in each pool, prepared full-MoE pipeline timings were:

Tokens GPU replay, 256 MiB flush before each call Warm GPU replay CPU enqueue
16 473.5 → 368.0 µs 413.2 → 307.6 µs 21.7 → 18.8 µs
1024 700.2 → 543.7 µs 673.8 → 527.4 µs 26.1 → 25.7 µs

GPU measurements use CUDA events and medians across three rounds; CPU submission is measured separately. The controlled baseline restores the parent frozen sources, catalog, shortlists and SMEM calculation while keeping the common runtime and environment identical. This measures routing, FC1, intermediate quantization, FC2 and finalization after preparation, not serving end-to-end latency. The two flushed-replay cases improved by about 22%, with no observed CPU-overhead regression.

This fills the missing SM120 execution evidence for these cases. It does not qualify every shape/device or promise bitwise agreement across different tactics/batch sizes. The existing performance-record and README comments remain with the author; the independent approval is unchanged.

The focused CI run passed on e0f905671b74: all six AOT builds passed; H100 reported 225 passed, 927 skipped, 0 failed, with all 1,152 collected cases finalized.

Catalog hashes, all packaged shortlist profiles, SM120 source round trips, and both graph-ownership capability tests passed. The 913 SM107/SM120 GPU cases skipped on H100; 14 compiler fault-injection cases skipped because the image lacks the required compiler API. This validates packaging and host selection, but does not establish SM120 numerical correctness or the claimed performance change.
