perf(cake_kda): two-CTA records of the context-parallel state walks, selected per launch - #7436
The Cake packed KDA chunked training backend, for documents packed into one sequence (head dim 128, chunk 64, 1 to 64 heads per call, BF16 q/k/v/beta/out, FP32 gate, FP32 recurrent state), has two Cake variants: a single-device packed training forward and backward with a saved-context and a checkpoint-replay backward, and a context-parallel variant that splits the sequence over the ranks of a torch.distributed group, passes state across ranks through affine state summaries in FP32, supports three partition layouts (contiguous, zigzag, per-document zigzag + ragged) with both backward modes, and includes the halo variant of the width-4 causal conv1d + SiLU training backend. This PR delivers the context-parallel variant with faster fragment state walks. Its four fragment state walks (the forward and the backward state recurrence over each fragment's chunk chain, each in an offset form that carries the state from segment to segment and a tape form that writes the per-chunk state tape) gain a two-CTA record beside the previous full-width record: two CTAs per (segment, head), each over one 64-column half of the FP32 128 x 128 recurrent state and two resident per SM, in place of one full-width CTA per (segment, head) and per SM. The two tape walks always launch the two-CTA record (the full-width tape records remain as test-only programs); the two offset walks select the record per launch by a fit rule on the chain lengths, so launches of one or two long chains per rank split and launches of many short chains keep the full-width record. M, B, the states and the tapes keep FP32 storage; every other kernel, the single-device path, the partition layouts, the transfer walk and both backward modes are unchanged, and results are bitwise identical to the previous version. The baseline is the previous Cake version of the same kernels, the context-parallel variant as merged in PR #7176, measured as an interleaved arm in the same sessions. Across the 144 table rows (one per pack, CP degree, partition layout and boundary), the speedup over that baseline ranges from 0.9906x to 1.0742x in session 1, from 1.0143x to 1.0754x in session 2 and from 0.9906x to 1.0754x over both sessions. In both sessions, 102 of 144 rows are more than 2 % faster than the previous version, 31 of 144 are within 0.98-1.02 and 0 of 144 are more than 2 % slower, and the remaining rows are more than 2 % faster in one session and within 0.98-1.02 in the other. Over both sessions, the 72 B3 rows (forward, checkpoint replay and backward) range from 1.0158x to 1.0512x and the 72 B1 rows (module forward) range from 0.9906x to 1.0754x.
All latencies are in ms on NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a, 152 SMs) with CUDA 13.0, driver 580.159.03, NCCL 2.30.7 and PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130. Each latency is the median over steady iterations of the slowest rank, with the two arms interleaved in one process group, and each cell gives the values of two independent sessions, s1 / s2; the speedup is previous version ms / this PR ms in each session. CP2 and CP4 run on one node of 4 GPUs, CP8 on 2 nodes and CP16 on 4 nodes of one NVL72 domain. B1 is the module forward (conv halo, conv, KDA state passing and recurrence, communication included) and B3 is forward plus checkpoint replay plus backward. The previous-version column is the previous Cake version of the same kernels, the context-parallel variant as merged in PR #7176, run as the interleaved arm with its full-width records for every walk launch and every other kernel identical.

The kernel's other Cake variant is the single-device packed training forward and backward with saved-context and checkpoint-replay backward, and the family ships on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a, with the two-CTA records built for all three.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added automatic, full-width, and split walk options for KDA training, with selection based on workload characteristics.
Added training kernel variants for additional GPU architectures.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of oversized tensor dimensions and stride calculations by reporting errors instead of allowing integer overflow.
Corrected panel indexing in a training kernel’s data-loading path.
The K1 / K2 walk programs (kcp_fwdh_offset / _tape, kcp_dhu_offset / _tape) gain a two-CTA record:
two CTAs per (segment, head) over 64 value columns each (grid_rule ctas_per_head 2), bitwise equal to
the full-width record. The offset programs ship both records and the registry picks one per launch
(select_rule walk_form, cake_kcp_jit.walk_form): the two-CTA form when the launch list-schedules
within its longest chain at two CTAs per SM, counting a two-CTA step at 0.9 of a full-width step
(WALK_FORM_FIT_STEP_RATIO), the full-width form for multi-wave launches. The tape programs ship the
two-CTA record alone (rule "split"; their per-step tape stores halve with the CTA's columns and move
to TMA bulk stores); their full-width records are test-only, selected by the walk_form knob. The host
passes the form through the launch path; a two-CTA tape launch is not bracketed by the
one-CTA-per-SM cache preference. The test knob walk_form ("full" / "split") forces one form for the
A/B record and the call logs (program, form, n_walk) per launch.

…ble set
The record form of a K1 / K2 state-walk launch (full-width or two-CTA) is
the registry rule on the launch's chains, head count and SM count under the
walk_form knob. The host evaluated it on every launch; the fit rule of the
offset programs list-schedules the chains in Python (lpt_makespan over
2 x SMs machines), a flat host cost per eager call that grows with the
segment count. The rule's inputs are static per (ctx, H): the table set now
holds a per-(program, walk list, H, SM count, knob) form table, filled on
first use and looked up afterwards. Same decision for every launch; the
walk_form_log and the knob semantics unchanged; no kernel or record change.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The one-CTA-per-SM cap applies to the full-width launches of the tape
programs; a two-CTA launch runs uncapped. The bitwise graph-replay test
assumed every tape launch full-width (eager cache_config "bracket", one
capture skip or one node attribute per tape launch), which no longer holds
when the registry's rule takes the two-CTA form on its one-rank shape. The
call's inventory now carries the launched forms (LAST_CALL[kind]["walk_forms"],
a copy of walk_form_log) and the test derives the bracket, skip and
node-attribute expectations from them; a walk_form="full" parametrization
keeps the capped paths covered.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The ``_Tables.walk_form`` docstring now says that the first launch per
(program, walk list, H, SM count, knob) of a context pays the registry rule
once (milliseconds of Python for the ``fit`` rule on long chain lists) and
that every later launch pays a dictionary lookup, so an eager first call's
cost is not read as a per-launch regression. Docstring only.

…tage ready ring
The two vh = 64 tape records with TMA tape stores, cake_kda_train_6fac4410ba86c48541c4 and
cake_kda_train_32b1aa657b082f2f4cb7, are re-rendered from the kernel sources whose operand-ready
barriers follow the two-stage panel ring: the MMA warp and the TMA warp both consume them, and a
single stage the TMA warp polled late could complete twice, alias its parity bit and deadlock.
The ring changes no arithmetic; the library names and build keywords stay. Every other walk unit
is re-rendered from the same pins; a unit whose generated sources did not change stays bitwise.

The KCP implementation now selects full or split K1/K2 walk forms per launch, with an option to force either form. The change adds CUDA kernel and binding variants, checked TMA stride calculations in generated bindings, updated build artifacts, and tests for selection, caching, and graph replay.
Changes: Cake KDA KCP execution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Walk forms and kernel records flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/cake_kcp_jit.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_kda_train_kcp_build.py
The JIT registry defines full and split walk records, auto-selection rules, and test-only full-width tape records. Tests cover record selection, grids, and walk-form rules.
Per-launch form selection and launch wiring flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/cake_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_kda_train_kcp.py
KCP resolves and caches a walk form per launch, passes it through launch paths, and uses the selected record and grid. Graph-replay tests cover auto and full forms.
CUDA kernels, bindings, and new build records flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/csrc/cake_kda_train_{32b1aa657b082f2f4cb7,5a20cd12bb62bb6f3ac5,6fac4410ba86c48541c4,afe02fb600500ba3556f}_{binding,kernel}.cu, flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/build.json, flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/build.test.json
New kernels and bindings implement chunked KDA state and adjoint work. The bindings validate inputs, encode tensor maps, and launch the kernels. Build records add architecture-specific artifacts. Two existing kernel transfer loops also change their panel handling.
TMA arithmetic checks and refreshed artifacts flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/csrc/*_binding.cu, flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/build.json, flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/build.test.json
Generated bindings check int64 overflow in TMA byte-stride calculations. Related manifests refresh hashes; some sm_107a test records now require CUDA 13.4.

This change adds two-CTA state-walk forms and chooses between them per launch. Shipped usage through the built-in program provider is unaffected. A custom program provider that does not accept the new walk_form keyword could fail on its first K1/K2 launch, so update the provider contract or pass the keyword conditionally. The risk is small and easy to fix.

Add walk_form to the program-provider contract.
KernelBackend.run() forwards walk_form to programs.launch(...) for every K1/K2 walk. _FiPrograms.launch() accepts it, but the documented provider contract does not. A compatible non-_FiPrograms provider with no walk_form or **kwargs can raise TypeError on the first K1/K2 launch.
Update the provider contract and its implementations, or add walk_form only when the provider supports it.
