perf(cake_kda): auto grad, ship the BF16x3 half-width transfer walk on the context-parallel route - #7176
The Cake packed KDA kernels form a chunked training backend for documents packed into one sequence and come in two Cake variants: a single-device packed training variant, and a context-parallel (KCP) variant that splits the sequence over the ranks of a torch.distributed group, passes the recurrent state between ranks through FP32 affine state summaries, and supports contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag + ragged partition layouts with saved-context and checkpoint-replay backward. This PR gives the context-parallel variant a faster cross-rank state transfer: the transfer walk, which carries the FP32 recurrent state across fragment boundaries and ranks as the affine product S_out = M * S_in + B, now computes a half-width BF16x3 split product (each FP32 operand split into three BF16 parts, products on the tensor cores, FP32 accumulation) with two CTAs per (segment, head), each covering one half of the state's columns, in place of the previous full-width TF32 hi/lo split product with one CTA per (segment, head). M, B and the states keep FP32 storage, and every other kernel, the single-device path, the partition layouts and both backward modes are unchanged; results differ from the previous version only in the last bits of the transferred state (a different product rounding) and stay inside the family's FP64-referenced precision budgets, and forward and backward are bitwise reproducible run to run. Against the previous Cake version of the same kernels as merged in PR #7117, measured as an interleaved arm in the same sessions with the same protocol, the speedup ranges from 0.9498x to 1.0868x in session 1 and from 0.9812x to 1.0560x in session 2; 89 of 144 rows are faster by more than 2 % in both sessions, 39 of 144 stay within 0.98-1.02 in both, none of the 144 is slower by more than 2 % in both, and the remaining rows change band between the sessions. Two rows are slower than the previous version by more than 2 % in session 1 only and faster in session 2: Q2 CP8 contiguous B1 (0.9498x / 1.0268x) and Q4 CP8 zigzag B3 (0.9576x / 1.0127x). The transfer walk is a forward-side cost, so the gain shows most in B1, the module forward, which ranges from 0.9498x to 1.0868x across both sessions and is above 1.02x in every CP2 row, with the largest single-row ratios and the widest spread at CP8 / CP16, while B3, which adds checkpoint replay and the unchanged backward, ranges from 0.9576x to 1.0233x.
Measured on NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a) with CUDA 13.0, driver 580.159.03 and NCCL 2.30.7; latency in ms = median over steady iterations of the slowest rank, from two independent sessions s1 / s2 on different nodes, and speedup = previous version ms / this PR ms; CP2 / CP4 on one node of 4 GPUs, CP8 on two nodes, CP16 on four nodes of one NVL72 domain; B1 = module forward (conv halo + conv + KDA state passing + recurrence, communication included), B3 = forward + checkpoint replay + backward; previous version = the same kernels as merged in PR #7117, run as an interleaved arm in the same sessions with the same protocol.

The family's other Cake variants, neither changed by this PR, are the single-device packed training variant (forward + backward in saved-context and checkpoint-replay modes) and the halo variant of the width-4 causal conv1d + SiLU training backend that ships beside the context-parallel variant; the family covers sm_100a (B200 / GB200), sm_103a (B300 / GB300) and sm_107a (R200), the new transfer program is built for all three, and the table measures GB300.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The default transfer method for experimental KDA training now uses the half-width BF16x3 walk. The TF32 hi/lo walk remains available through explicit test selection.
Added prebuilt KDA training libraries for additional GPU architectures.
Bug Fixes
KDA training now rejects a head count below one with a clear validation error.
The rendered sources follow the pinned kernel tree (the ring-cursor wait
form of the tape, offset, transfer and merge programs); build.json and
build.test.json carry the refreshed entries. No registry or host change.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…xt-parallel route
The KCP transfer walk's shipped record becomes the BF16x3 program at value
width 64 (two CTAs per segment and head, 107520 B of dynamic shared memory);
the TF32 hi/lo walk it replaces moves to the test-only table as
kcp_transfer_walk_tf32_hilo (transfer_walk knob "tf32_hilo"), beside its
static precision_mode forms and the full-width BF16x3 walk. Library names
follow the kernel and its build keywords, so only the manifests move; the
registry's derived leaves are unchanged.
Host: the transfer_walk default is "bf16x3_hw64" (KcpOptions, KcpSaved, the
program provider); a non-zero precision_mode implies the TF32 hi/lo walk and
still refuses a BF16x3 walk beside it. The tests follow the new tables, the
knob order and the defaults; the README names the shipped walk.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
build.json lists the half-width BF16x3 transfer walk (cake_kda_train_9a3f306bacf8c8a1547d)
on the three architectures and build.test.json the TF32 hi/lo walk it replaces
(cake_kda_train_1ac972f0cb7cc7b13cf7); the rendered sources already follow the pinned kernel tree.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The KCP default changes from TF32 hi/lo to half-width BF16x3, with precision-mode routing preserved for TF32. The shipped and test-only records and AOT manifests are updated. Several generated CUDA kernels change barrier addressing, BF16 output packing, and tensor-memory deallocation. The binding also rejects num_heads values below one.

The default transfer walk is now bf16x3_hw64. When no walk is specified, nonzero precision modes select tf32_hilo. Tests cover defaults and incompatible combinations.
Transfer records and AOT build metadata flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/README.md, cake_kcp_jit.py, build.json, build.test.json, tests/experimental/test_cake_kda_train_kcp_build.py
The shipped record uses the half-width BF16x3 kernel. TF32 hi/lo and full-width BF16x3 remain test choices. Registry tests and generated build records reflect the updated records and architecture builds.
Kernel barriers and stage addressing flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/csrc/cake_kda_train_1c66573e87150245374b_kernel.cu, cake_kda_train_3808ea4d567b82ea21a4_kernel.cu, cake_kda_train_9a3f306bacf8c8a1547d_kernel.cu
Several kernels remove stage-indexed barrier and descriptor offsets. They use base barriers and stage-zero shared-memory offsets.
BF16 output packing and kernel resource updates flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train/csrc/cake_kda_train_*_kernel.cu, cake_kda_train_f227dd21f1f3cb464b29_binding.cu
Several output paths pack BF16 values into vector-store words. Kernel edits pass tensor-memory addresses directly to deallocation calls. The binding rejects num_heads values below one.

Use the two-CTA grid in the run_module fallback.
When a provider exposes only run_module, this branch selects the new shipped half-width kernel. KernelBackend._transfer_args supplies only one CTA per segment and head, and the fallback passes that grid through unchanged. For one segment and one head, only one of the required two CTAs runs, so part of the FP32 state remains unwritten. Apply the selected record’s CTA multiplier in this fallback; keep the one-CTA grid for TF32 records.

Remove the incompatible pointer read from BF16 packing.
_bf2 is a __nv_bfloat162, but this expression reads it through a uint32_t*. That read violates C++ strict aliasing and can make packed output depend on compiler optimization. The same new pattern appears in the other three stores in this file, in cake_kda_train_9cfe05bce78410f1304b_kernel.cu, and in cake_kda_train_f227dd21f1f3cb464b29_kernel.cu. Fix the packing emitter so all generated stores use a supported bit conversion or copy the object representation without an incompatible pointer dereference. NVIDIA documents which BF16 component occupies each half of the packed value. (docs.nvidia.com)
Based on learnings, dereferencing an incompatible pointer type to type-pun a value violates strict aliasing; memcpy is an allowed alternative.

Update the BF16 packing emitter that generates the _packed_0 store to avoid
reading _bf2 through a uint32_t pointer; use a supported bit conversion or copy
its object representation while preserving NVIDIA’s documented component
ordering. Apply the same fix to the other generated BF16 stores so none use
incompatible pointer dereferences.
