fix(#488): the consumer switch — replay skips are occurrence-bound via the emission projection - #515
Conversation
A stored row is exactly what was durably written: its replay identity never strips a summary-shaped prefix. The live verified-carrier strip stays as the opt-out default (strip_carrier) for its existing callers; occurrence-bound consumers switch to the emission projection in the following commits.
…n projection output_effective and native_summary_index come from one projection over the returned list (proof v4 plus its own descriptors): a proven emitted scaffold is excluded, a proven emitted prefix keeps its remainder, every other row keeps full identity. The loose shape classifier no longer decides proof output. "output" stays the full identity list that the output_multiplicity witness counts. Projection entries carry their recorded output position.
Every consumer that skips or maps a row reads one projection of the complete list (A2): the store-tail matcher, effective identities, the durable and process-local commit-proof walks, and the compaction head exclusion (projected once over the admitted list; subset callers look rows up, never re-project). - Only a v4 descriptor makes a summary/objective row scaffold; descriptor-less shape is content (full identity, store direction). Without a v4 proof in force (never compacted, legacy v2/v3) the rc4 contract applies unchanged (A5). - A standalone summary/objective match past its recorded output position is authored (N6): full identity, never a skip. - #499 tail 0: a host-merged scaffold row with a new suffix stops the durable proof before it; it is stored whole and later matched in full, never by a same-text row elsewhere (A6). - The source mapper maps a proven emitted occurrence by its remainder, any other row by its full identity when durable, else by the verified-carrier remainder.
The active-replay cache (remember, lookup, prefix reuse, per-index check) no longer collapses an authored summary-shaped row onto its remainder, so it never serves one list's replay view for the other. Keys only get stricter. The durable replay-snapshot digests are unchanged: they are persisted, and re-keying them would void rc4-era digests on upgrade.
Stored rows keep full identity, so messages[1] is admitted against the registered row in full (a carrier never sits there: it needs a second tail user, the anchor a sole real user). The mapper's anchor lookup matches the same way.
The 7 strict-xfail cells of test_issue_488_emission_proof.py pass, and so does the pre-existing #484 item 11l in-place cell in test_compression_boundary.py (its marker is removed). New consumer tests: an authored summary prefix past its emission is stored whole (emitted row present or gone); an identical authored summary after the emitted one is content; an empty-suffix descriptor the projection declines keeps full identity in the walks and the mapper, cached and after a durable reload; a carrier or folded carrier yields its remainder only when its recorded suffix matched, and a prefix extension stays new content.
… whole A #499 composite (a new user row the host merged into an emitted summary or objective row, or past a carrier's recorded suffix) is stored whole. The mapper and the store-tail walk fall back from the projected remainder to the row's stored (whole) identity when only that is durable, and the durable proof walk compares the composite in its stored form. Found by the #488 reviewer probes: without it the next compaction froze (unmapped head) and a restart persisted the composite again.

📝 SummaryPriority Level: P0–P4/NIT unavailable. No current review findings were supplied, so severity counts and merge-blocking status cannot be established. Confidence: 100% that the supplied context contains no review findings. The change bases replay-skip decisions on occurrence matches from a projection of the complete message list. Proven emitted occurrences use projected identity. Unmatched rows retain full or stored identity. The change updates commit-proof output, replay reconciliation, store-ID mapping, compaction, cache identity, and cursor remapping. The change adds regression coverage for authored summary-shaped rows, malformed or ambiguous descriptors, carrier suffixes, host-merged composites, legacy proofs, and single-projection behavior. Test results and merge-completion status cannot be confirmed from the supplied evidence. WalkthroughCompression and replay reconciliation now use emission occurrence projections to distinguish generated scaffolding from retained content. Replay identity comparisons preserve carrier distinctions where required. Tests cover authored summary-shaped rows, host-merged composites, and objective rows. ChangesReplay identity reconciliation

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Replay/scaffold consumers now derive identities from v4 emission projections instead of summary-shaped content alone.
- Carrier-aware comparisons use full identities in caches, anchors, host-rewrite matching, and store mapping.
- Native and durable commit-proof cursor calculations now consume projected occurrence identities.
Affected invariants:
- Every real user occurrence must retain its own identity and remain durably reachable.
- Generated scaffold skips must be bound to a specific emitted occurrence, not merely shared content or object identity.
- Compaction and restart reconciliation must not duplicate or omit host-merged content.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:563 keys projected occurrences solely by
id(m). - reconcile.py store mapping later consumes that object-id map for subset matching.
- The added occurrence tests cover identical content in distinct dictionaries but do not cover two list positions referencing the same dictionary object.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, or project code were executed.
- Unchanged helper implementations and external Hermes host behavior were not independently inspected.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, security, CI, or release regression was validated directly from the supplied diff.

A persisted v4 descriptor whose output_occurrence is not a mapping, or whose index is not a non-negative int, is declined by the projection (its row keeps full identity) instead of raising AttributeError on every reconciliation and compaction. Validated with the other descriptor fields, before any row match.
input and output are the full-identity multiplicity witness, so they are built without the verified-carrier strip (the proof identity of S+Y is S+Y, not Y); output_effective stays the projected identities. The three readers that compare a live list with input/output (the commit end, the post-compress cursor and the host-input cursor) compare full identities too. The carrier-rendering control now pins output as the carrier's full identity and output_effective as the original row's.
Under a v4 proof in force (F1): a row the projection did not bind keeps full identity in the store-id mapper (no DAG-verified remainder fallback), and folded lineage overrides only an occurrence the projection bound or a row no descriptor can bind (a tool-call fold); it no longer outranks a declined projection. A #499 composite (bytes past a proven occurrence's recorded suffix) is new content stored whole (F2): the mapper prefers its own whole row whenever that is stored, and the store-tail walk matches it only whole, so an older row equal to its remainder never proves replay of it. One projection of the complete list, by position (F5, F6): preflight subset callers slice the parent list's occurrences, compress() registers only rows at exactly one position (a copy or an aliased row is unproven), the store-tail walk gives every position its own object, and the output mapping in the commit proof reads THIS proof's emissions. Known red, reported for an orchestrator decision: the Phase-1 flip test_nested_authored_summary_is_not_recursively_stripped maps an unbound row through the DAG strip that F1 prohibits.
The durable variant of the declined empty-suffix test closes and re-opens the engine on the same database; the composite restart test first asserts NEW-0 was stored before the restart; the carrier-remainder cells ingest after a restart and count the stored row (store direction shown, not inferred). F3 (no v4 proof: full identity for user rows) is pinned as a strict xfail: implementing it breaks the #498 rc3-upgrade controls, reported for an orchestrator decision.
…head F3' (owner-delegate decision, fix round 2): with no v4 proof in force the rc4 path stays, except that an objective-prefixed row carrying any other suffix after its DAG-verified summary parts keeps full identity and is stored whole; the durable v2/v3 proof walk recognises that row as a composite of its recorded scaffold so a restart does not store it twice. The legacy summary-carrier DAG strip is unchanged (pinned as a strict xfail residual for the upgrade window).
Store direction: the mapper leaves the S+S+X row unmapped before ingest, then it is stored whole as its own row; the stored S+X row is untouched.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Replay and reconciliation consumers now use occurrence-bound v4 emission projections instead of identifying generated scaffolds solely by shape.
- Commit proofs retain full input/output identities while
output_effectiverecords projected user identities. - Store-ID mapping now accepts occurrence projections and handles host-merged composites using whole-row identities.
- Legacy v2/v3 proofs retain the prior replay contract with a bounded objective-head exception.
Affected invariants:
- Automatic reconciliation must never discard or make a real user occurrence unreachable.
- Malformed durable proof metadata must decline safely rather than establish replay identity.
- Emission descriptors must bind to the exact output occurrence they prove.
- Message chronology, multiplicity, and provenance must remain occurrence-specific.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:249-255 reads and validates descriptor output indexes but omits an upper-bound check.
- reconcile.py:280-285 explicitly falls back to
output_multiplicitywhen the index is outside the proof output. - reconcile.py occurrence projection subsequently uses the accepted index to decide whether a matching row is emitted scaffold.
- The added malformed-descriptor test covers non-mapping and non-integer indexes, but not a nonnegative out-of-range integer.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, or project code were executed.
- Unchanged helper implementations and runtime host behavior were not independently inspected.
No-finding rationale: Beyond the out-of-range descriptor gap, the supplied diff did not establish another current supported-path failure strongly enough to report.

Unmapped until stored otherwise. - Descriptors record the emitted output's length (output_occurrence.of); the projection declines an index at or beyond it (F7 follow-up), so a malformed persisted proof cannot bind a later row by index. - Tests: the older-remainder counterexample asserts the mapper leaves the composite unmapped; the malformed-occurrence test gains an out-of-range cell.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Replay/scaffold decisions now use occurrence-bound v4 emission projections instead of summary shape alone.
- Commit proofs retain full input/output identities while separately recording projected effective output.
- Compaction and reconciliation store-ID mapping now consume per-occurrence identities.
Affected invariants:
- Authored summary-shaped content must never be mistaken for emitted scaffold.
- Malformed durable history must fail safely without dropping user context.
- Replay mapping must preserve occurrence multiplicity and chronology.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:246-257 validates output occurrence metadata but does not require or cross-check the recorded output length.
- reconcile.py:281-283 falls back to descriptor multiplicity when the index is outside the actual proof output.
- reconcile.py:610-625 can convert an accepted empty-suffix emission occurrence into a skipped identity.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or PR code were run.
- The supplied head SHA was not independently verified.
No-finding rationale: Beyond the malformed occurrence-bound validation issue, the supplied diff did not establish another supported-path failure strongly enough to report.

…clined A present but non-integer output_occurrence.of no longer bypasses the round-3 bound; the projection also declines an index beyond the in-memory proof's own output and treats a malformed output list as absent (no bound, no multiplicity witness). Regression cell test_malformed_output_occurrence_declines_the_descriptor[non-int-of] (red at 4cdcb83). Closes the evaos-code-review-bot thread on 4cdcb83.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction proofs now record full identities for input/output while deriving effective output through the emission projection.
- Replay, cursor reconciliation, and store-ID mapping now distinguish individual projected occurrences instead of stripping summary-shaped rows by content shape.
- Emission descriptors now include an output index and recorded output length.
Affected invariants:
- Existing durable commit proofs must remain interpretable across upgrades without duplicating or losing message occurrences.
- Only a proof-bound emitted occurrence may be skipped; authored lookalikes must retain full identity.
- Malformed or internally inconsistent durable proof metadata must fail closed.
Evidence:
- compaction.py:652 changes version-4 proof identity encoding without a visible version transition.
- engine.py:3940 and engine.py:5272 compare persisted proof arrays using full identities.
- reconcile.py:260 validates the index against both lengths but does not validate equality between the recorded and actual output lengths.
- The added compatibility tests exercise downgraded v3 proofs, but no test constructs a pre-change v4 carrier proof and reloads it under the new reader.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied exact-head diff; no project code was executed and no additional checkout files were inspected.
No-finding rationale: No additional issue was reported without a direct failure mechanism visible in the supplied diff.

Dismissed with record (land-pr §0): this CHANGES_REQUESTED review (PRR_kwDOT3S3V88AAAABPL_g3w) was submitted at 5e015fe, four fix rounds before the current head be4a961. Its inline threads were addressed in fix round 2 (e7cb571) via the store direction rather than the suggested fallback restore: l49FC (legacy path re-store) = FALSE as measured + test L1 test_legacy_proof_replay_is_not_stored_again; l49FL (objective detection) = FIXED NOW by the F3' narrowing + test L2 test_legacy_proof_objective_with_a_merged_row_is_stored_whole_once (CodeRabbit auto-resolved it on the push). Both carry a User disposition reply. CodeRabbit posted no new review at e7cb571, 4cdcb83 or be4a961 and did not re-approve; the review no longer reflects the head. Receipt and review pointers are in the merge receipt comment on #515.

Summary
Phase 2 / PR-B, the consumer switch. The emission projection from PR-A (#510, merged at 809a80e) now decides every replay skip. Summary shape no longer does. A row keeps its FULL identity (store direction) unless the row is a proven emitted occurrence. Proven occurrences are projected from the complete list, once per call.
strip_carrier).output_effectiveandnative_summary_indexcome from the projection.outputstays full identity, because it is the multiplicity witness.Amendments honoured
retained_source) is treated like a carrier. It yields its remainder only when its recorded suffix matched.Fix round 1 (review of 5e015fe; commits below, pushed with fix round 2)
output_occurrenceis not a mapping, or whose index is not a non-negative int, is declined (its row keeps full identity). Nothing raises.input/outputarrays hold full identities (the multiplicity witness).output_effectivestays projected. The three readers that compare a live list with them (commit end, post-compress cursor, host-input cursor) compare full identities too.Fix round 2 (owner-delegate decisions on the round-1 STOPs; pushed head e7cb571)
test_nested_authored_summary_keeps_full_identity_under_a_v4_proof. Before ingest the mapper leaves S+S+X unmapped; after ingest it is stored whole as its own row, and the stored S+X row is untouched.Fix round 3 (Astra delta review #1 at e7cb571: one MERGE_BLOCKING; pushed head 4cdcb83)
_get_store_id_map_for_messagesnow maps a merged composite to its own whole row when stored, else to its remainder only when that remainder's digest is in the active proof's own effective output (_proof_output_effective_digests: the in-memoryoutput_effective, else the durableeffective_sha256) — a row Hermes merged behind the emitted one (the In-place compaction: same-id session end/start resets the frontier — later publications conflict and ~50 duplicate rows per turn #483 shape) still maps, a row outside the proof's output never does; otherwise the composite stays unmapped until it is stored. Attribution limit (Astra F2-R, unchanged since 809a80e): digest membership proves content, not a store id — among several stored candidates with the same bytes above the frontier the earliest is chosen.test_composite_is_not_skipped_by_an_older_remainder_rownow also asserts the mapper leaves it unmapped.output_occurrence.of(the output's length) and the projection declines an index at or beyond it; test cell[out-of-range], red at e7cb571.Fix round 4 (bot thread at 4cdcb83; pushed head be4a961)
output_occurrence.ofbypassed the round-3 bound (evaos-code-review-bot P1)._project_emitted_occurrencesnow declines it, declines an index beyond the in-memory proof's own output, and treats a malformedoutputlist as absent (no bound, no multiplicity witness). Test cell[non-int-of], red at 4cdcb83. +6/−1 non-test; envelope 343 vs 809a80e (recorded allowance 345). gpt-6-astra delta [P1] Keep historical instructions and recall policy outside user authority #2 at 4cdcb83: PASS 95, no MERGE_BLOCKING; this delta is covered by the orchestrator line-read and the re-run gates.Legacy-proof window
Sessions whose last compaction ran on an older build (a v2/v3 durable proof, no emissions), or that were never compacted under this build, keep the rc4 replay contract until their first compaction under this build writes a v4 proof. Inside that window the one narrowing above applies: a new row the host merged into the tail-0 objective head is stored whole, not skipped. The residual accepted for the window: an authored S+X whose X is already stored is still identified by the legacy carrier strip as X (pinned as a strict xfail,
test_legacy_proof_authored_summary_is_not_mapped_to_a_stored_remainder). An objective-only head (no summary parts to verify) keeps rc4's skip. This is an ACCEPTED TRADEOFF bounded to the upgrade window.Known behaviour
