Retained conversations can fail compaction when different conversations share a producer session, or replay stored rows when Hermes ends the original history after an in-place compaction. Source selection and publication used different ownership domains, and the end hook reused a cursor from the shortened projection. Reopening a finalized session could also discard its committed checkpoint.

This change uses one owner domain for source selection, publication and summary-root admission. Ordinary replay remains scoped to the current producer and owner. It restores a finalized checkpoint only for the same session with no reset, reconciles an original-history end flush after an exact cached-prefix match, and recognizes trusted engine-produced snapshots without requiring a system message. Generated summary carriers receive the existing Hermes marker. Exact retained-user proof survives until that occurrence leaves the active projection. Externalized content resolves only when the entire message is a placeholder.

After a fresh turn, the causal writer renews an existing exact snapshot only when the owned prefix is proven and the complete ordered suffix was appended without filtering or lossy identity. The proof and new rows commit together. The reconciled cursor and existing store lock prevent a stale boundary or concurrent read from creating an invalid renewal; missing readback preserves fresh ingestion and declines renewal.

Related to #247. The broader candidate in #458 remains frozen as a draft. This change adds no schema, metadata registry, generic cold-reader snapshot-extension inference, cancellation protocol or host API.

Validation at cb1dc6932d14f9e630fc173b84f822e644a9d9f7:

  • Ownership and finalize/reopen defects have failing unmodified-baseline fixtures and passing corrections.

  • The original-history end-flush fixture reproduces the released baseline failure: 121 stored rows become 160. System and systemless variants now add zero rows through compaction, end flush, same-session boundary and cold replay; fresh turns are admitted once.

  • Focused owner, frontier, lifecycle, retained-occurrence and callback checks pass, including direct post-compaction assistant append, missing readback, fresh repeated content/tool pairs and joint append/proof rollback. Independent preservation review covers the final production delta.

  • Exact-head CI passes Python 3.11–3.14, lint and workflow lint.

  • Three real Astra pressure → compaction → reply → cold-reopen cycles passed on a protected retained-conversation copy through Hermes 21091eb43914d7268239e0991563a7be861bc226. Context reduced from 210,091 to 41,999 tokens, 209,541 to 44,353, and 210,035 to 48,816. Each committed genuine LCM coverage, preserved all original rows and the exact recent 24-message tail, and added zero duplicate rows through compaction, session end and both cold reopens. Base Astra used a 272,000-token window; native fallback was disabled. Existing normal mode was used with threshold full sweep disabled.

  • A second retained-conversation copy also passed guarded recovery/adoption (52,978→45,954 tokens), an actual Astra reply and cold reopen with all five summary roots visible and zero duplicate ingestion. Every original source row remains; a malformed tool interval was genuinely summarized before retaining its protocol-valid 12-message raw suffix. This one-off recovery does not replace standard 24/32-tail regression gates.

  • The prior Hermes/LCM runtime read and wrote a candidate-touched disposable clone while preserving original content.

Current source head c6a1246b3f05191a0ca10e1d12173c167563e235 additionally:

  • Rejects overlapping historical roots without changing stored data; the overlap was produced through the unmodified main engine's A→B→A lifecycle.
  • Corrects an empty filtered-history cursor at an in-place boundary so the next fresh turn is stored once.
  • Preserves already-proven blank legacy ownership atomically before replacing a lifecycle binding. A real baseline-created database now keeps A's source lineage visible through A→B→C. Ambiguous bindings remain excluded; existing source IDs, producer sessions, content and explicit owners remain unchanged.
  • Supplies the existing safely quoted producer-qualified expansion hint for admitted cross-session roots, while preserving summary markers and current-session formatting.

Each changed surface has focused regression evidence and independent targeted acceptance/adversarial coverage. The predecessor d1 passed all required CI jobs; final c6 exact-head CI and protected review receipts are being checked. The copied provider evidence above remains bound to cb1 and is not automatically requalified at c6.

Late review claims were bounded and dispositioned: post-reset restoration is a preexisting excluded-path limitation; normal compression rollover already reassigns every node; the alleged fresh-ingest loss did not reproduce on the actual baseline overlap database, which has no registered compacted-active snapshot premise. No global node scan, producer registry or speculative renewal mechanism was added.

Separately, #457 has passing synthetic actual-Hermes cancellation/cold-retry/save checks for raw and existing-summary inputs, including fresh repeated tool pairs. The combined candidate passes 34 affected checks, but that interruption change is not part of this PR. RC/GA qualification and live installation remain incomplete. Existing service uses the native recovery workaround; this PR does not claim the installed LCM is repaired. No release or issue closure is claimed.

📝 Summary

Priority Level: P2

Review findings

No actionable P0–P3 issues identified from the available evidence.

The supplied validation reports pass focused ownership, lifecycle, replay, callback, and CI checks. Interrupted partial-publication recovery remains release-blocking, but the evidence assigns it to follow-up PR #457 and does not claim it as part of this change.

Confidence: 85%

Walkthrough

The change adds conversation-scoped ownership resolution, validates summary lineage and compaction mappings, supports in-place compression recovery, and extends replay, renewal, lifecycle, and legacy-owner coverage.

Changes

Conversation ownership and replay integrity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ownership and lineage contracts
lifecycle_state.py, store.py, tests/test_owner_core_v12.py, tests/test_legacy_bind_v18.py
Lifecycle transitions promote only unambiguous legacy rows, validate summary lineage, preserve frontiers, and use transactional ownership updates. Conversation-scoped history queries filter explicit and legacy ownership.
Engine ownership routing and boundaries
engine.py, compaction.py, tests/test_issue_3_*, tests/test_issue_5_contiguous_frontier.py, tests/test_lcm_engine.py
Engine paths use owned history and summary roots. Compression boundaries support in-place continuation. Compaction summaries carry a marker, and retained-anchor behavior is updated.
Replay reconciliation and snapshot renewal
reconcile.py, engine.py, tests/test_owner_core_host_callbacks.py, tests/test_native_carrier_replay.py
Replay identity extraction, snapshot ownership, lossless append checks, renewal metadata, cursor reconciliation, rollback handling, and cold replay behavior are updated.
Compaction publication integrity
compaction.py, engine.py, docs/operator-guide.md, skills/hermes-lcm/references/session-lifecycle.md, tests/test_owner_core_v12.py
Compaction rejects duplicate required source mappings and overlapping historical roots. Documentation describes the resulting operator state and legacy ownership rules.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to c6a12

Compaction can return provider-oversized context, and concurrent session resets can fail compaction or replay assembly. These major failures should be resolved before merge.

The bounded ownership and callback repair at cb1dc6932d14f9e630fc173b84f822e644a9d9f7 has independent acceptance and adversarial source reviews, each PASS with zero unresolved verified findings. Both bind protected base 7fb19f8d3518080c8d07408a2a28c3c66c15c51b. Their required review ratings are source assessments, not probabilities that a runtime is fixed. Receipts were submitted to the protected exact-head issuer.

Interrupted compaction after leaf publication RELEASE_BLOCKING Accepted follow-up in #457; release remains blocked on its correction Existing real Hermes dispatcher reproduces failure with full sweep disabled; isolated correction is in progress. This PR does not claim to fix it.

Protected-copy evidence now includes three real Astra compaction/reply/cold-reopen cycles on one retained conversation and recovery/adoption, Astra reply and cold reopen on the second. Original content, same conversation identities, unique coverage and zero duplicate ingestion were preserved. The prior runtime also passed read/write compatibility on a candidate-touched disposable clone.

Merge disposition: zero active source merge blockers and zero unresolved review threads on the last readback; the protected exact-head AI check and final live merge barrier remain required. Maintainer-authorized method is a merge commit pinned to this head, without bypass or auto-merge. The Eva recovery lane owns post-merge reconciliation, #457, release qualification and later installed-session acceptance. No issue closure, release or live installation is claimed here.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • Conversation history and summary selection now use logical conversation ownership, including narrowly admitted blank-owner legacy rows.
  • Same-session compression boundaries can reconcile replay cursors and renew compacted-snapshot proofs as new messages are appended.
  • Compaction publication now validates source ownership across conversation producers and fails open when a required source occurrence cannot be mapped.
  • Embedded archive references are expanded only when the entire content is an externalized placeholder.

Affected invariants:

  • Durable owned context must remain reachable after session transitions.
  • Summary lineage must cover each raw source without duplication or cross-conversation contamination.
  • Replay proofs must not suppress genuinely new message occurrences.
  • Publication must preserve contiguous, uniquely claimed source coverage.

Evidence:

  • lifecycle_state.py:86-167 producer discovery and summary-root admission
  • engine.py:4471-4490 logical-owner helpers
  • engine.py:6642-6797 owned summary assembly and replay snapshot registration
  • tests/test_owner_core_v12.py covers foreign ownership but not node-only producers aging out or overlapping legacy roots

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or arbitrary PR code were executed.
  • Callers and schema definitions outside the supplied diff were not inspected.

No-finding rationale: No additional issue was reported where the supplied diff did not establish a concrete supported-path invariant violation.

Risk Taxonomy

  • Data loss: 1
  • Migration: 1

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • History, summary admission, compaction publication, and replay reconciliation now use logical conversation ownership across producer sessions.
  • Same-session compaction boundaries can reconcile and renew exact compacted replay snapshots.
  • Compaction fails open when a required source occurrence cannot be mapped uniquely.
  • Embedded externalization references in native prose no longer replace the carrier content.

Affected invariants:

  • Durable context must remain reachable across session rollover and legacy migration.
  • Summary roots must have complete, non-overlapping, same-owner source lineage.
  • Replay renewal must not duplicate, omit, or cross conversation boundaries.

Evidence:

  • lifecycle_state.py:92-103 limits legacy producer admission to the lifecycle row's two retained bindings.
  • lifecycle_state.py:105-190 rejects roots whose raw sources are not explicitly owned or admitted through that limited legacy set.
  • store.py:797-816 uses the same limited legacy set for all conversation-history reads.
  • tests/test_owner_core_v12.py covers A→B→A overlap but not loss of a producer older than last_finalized_session_id.

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no commands, tests, builds, or arbitrary PR code were executed.

No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, security, CI, replay, or data-integrity defect was validated directly from the supplied diff.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • History, summary admission, publication checks, and mapping now use logical conversation ownership across producer sessions.
  • Same-session compression boundaries can reconcile and renew compacted replay snapshots as fresh turns are appended.
  • Embedded archive references in native prose no longer replace the full carrier content during replay.
  • Compaction fails open when a required source occurrence cannot be mapped uniquely.

Affected invariants:

  • Durable context must remain reachable across lifecycle rollover and legacy-data migration.
  • Summary roots must have complete, non-overlapping, same-owner source lineage.
  • Replay renewal must not duplicate, omit, or cross-contaminate stored occurrences.

Evidence:

  • lifecycle_state.py:97 derives legacy candidates from only the lifecycle row's current and last-finalized session slots.
  • lifecycle_state.py:102 passes only that bounded set to legacy ownership resolution.
  • store.py logical-owner reads depend on the resulting legacy session set.
  • tests/test_owner_core_v12.py covers one legacy-owner case and A→B→A overlap, but not retention across three or more producer generations.

Limitations:

  • No tests, builds, scripts, or arbitrary PR code were executed, per review constraints.
  • Review was limited to the supplied diff; broader checkout inspection was unavailable without prohibited shell access.

No-finding rationale: No additional defect was validated from the supplied diff with sufficient current-path evidence.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • Conversation-owned raw history and validated summary roots now span producer-session rollovers.
  • Legacy blank ownership is promoted transactionally before lifecycle pointers move.
  • Same-session compression replay can reconcile and renew persisted replay snapshots.
  • Embedded archive references no longer replace native carrier prose unless the entire content is an externalized placeholder.

Affected invariants:

  • Owned summary coverage must remain reachable across arbitrary lifecycle rollovers.
  • Independent summary roots must never claim the same stored occurrence.
  • Replay reconciliation must neither duplicate nor omit durable occurrences.
  • Ambiguous or foreign legacy rows must not be attributed to the active conversation.

Evidence:

  • lifecycle_state.py:90-101 bounds summary candidates to raw-message producers and two lifecycle pointers.
  • lifecycle_state.py:104 onward validates and detects overlap only among the candidates returned by that bounded producer set.
  • engine.py changes make cross-producer owned roots eligible for condensation, making summary-only intermediate producers relevant.
  • The added rollover test preserves a raw-producing A root but does not cover an intermediate producer that owns only a parent summary.

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; the final test-file patch was truncated.
  • No shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or PR code were executed, as requested.

No-finding rationale: No additional issue was reported because the remaining concerns could not be validated from the supplied diff strongly enough to justify a finding.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • Compaction and reconciliation now operate on conversation-owned history across producer sessions while admitting only unambiguous legacy blank-owner rows.
  • Lifecycle transitions promote proven legacy ownership atomically before replacing lifecycle pointers.
  • Summary assembly and publication validate complete owned lineage and reject overlapping historical roots.
  • Same-session compression replay can reconcile and renew exact snapshot proofs without duplicating appended turns.
  • Embedded archive references in ordinary prose are no longer treated as whole-message externalized placeholders.

Affected invariants:

  • Raw context remains stored when ownership or summary lineage is ambiguous.
  • Conversation ownership must not cross session/profile boundaries.
  • Compaction publication must cover every owned occurrence through its frontier exactly once.
  • Replay reconciliation must preserve occurrence identity and avoid duplicate ingestion.
  • Externalized payload restoration must not replace native carrier prose.

Evidence:

  • compaction.py required-occurrence mapping and conversation-owned exclusion scan
  • engine.py owner-history access, same-session boundary reconciliation, atomic snapshot renewal, and owned summary assembly
  • lifecycle_state.py legacy-owner promotion, lineage admission, and publication validation
  • reconcile.py exact snapshot-prefix ownership checks and whole-placeholder restoration guard
  • store.py conversation-owned history query
  • tests/test_legacy_bind_v18.py
  • tests/test_native_carrier_replay.py
  • tests/test_owner_core_host_callbacks.py
  • tests/test_owner_core_v12.py

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; the final test-file patch was truncated in the prompt.
  • Per instruction, no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or executable PR code were run.
  • Remote CI status and behavior outside the shown diff were not verified.

No-finding rationale: The inspected changes consistently fail open on ambiguous ownership or lineage, retain raw data, bind replay proofs to exact owned snapshots, and include focused regression coverage for the primary lossless-history and replay risks. No concrete current-diff defect meeting the finding threshold was validated.

Run the renewal proof once after the batch append. Confidence: 95%.

MessageStore._append_protected_batch invokes metadata_factory after each insert while holding _write_lock. For k messages, append_metadata repeats the lifecycle lookup and COUNT(*) query up to k times. The count guard limits the prefix and digest checks to the callback that sees the complete suffix. ON CONFLICT(key) DO UPDATE stores one metadata row, not k duplicate rows.

Do not use a first-callback guard. Later messages do not exist during the first callback, so the count check fails for multi-message appends and renewal metadata is omitted. Use a post-batch hook, or an equivalent final-callback mechanism, to run the lifecycle, count, prefix, and digest proof once after all messages are inserted. Keep scaffold metadata generation per message.

Materialize conversation-owned roots atomically. admitted_summary_roots() reads root IDs without SummaryDAG._db_lock, then _owned_summary_roots() fetches each node with separate unlocked get_node() calls. on_session_reset() can delete those nodes between the calls. Compaction, assembly, and reconciliation then dereference None through node.depth or node.node_id and can fail. Materialize roots under one DAG lock/transaction, or return a controlled result when a root is missing. Confidence: 95%.

Pass recovery_assembly_cap to the duplicate-source assembly call. When prior leaf passes exist, the branch uses 2**63 - 1 and marks the context assembled, so fail-open recovery skips its bounded path. The result can exceed the configured provider-facing limit. Pass recovery_assembly_cap; _assemble_committed_compaction_context forwards it to _assemble_context. Confidence: 98%.

Learning: In `engine.py`, do not treat `SummaryDAG.get_node()` returning `None` after `admitted_summary_roots()` as a supported concurrency defect without proving a reachable summary-node deletion path during active assembly or condensation. Background rollup maintenance does not delete summary nodes; reset deletion uses the exclusive lifecycle boundary; and opt-in doctor cleanup protects the active binding. Silently omitting an admitted root requires a preservation proof because LCM summary lineage is lossless.

Learning: In `lifecycle_state.py`, blank legacy `messages.conversation_id` occurrences require an unambiguous durable lifecycle binding. Explicit same-conversation rows from the same producer do not prove ownership of a blank legacy occurrence. `unambiguous_legacy_session_ids()` and `admitted_summary_roots()` must reject a mixed root when this durable proof is absent.

Document the positive ownership predicate.

LifecycleStateStore._promote_bound_legacy_rows derives candidates from the target lifecycle state's current_session_id and last_finalized_session_id. unambiguous_legacy_session_ids requires that durable target binding before checking foreign bindings or rows. An explicit row for the target conversation does not prove ownership of separate blank rows, so an operator may assign mixed legacy data to the wrong conversation.

Independent verification of this branch on your head c6a1246b3f05191a0ca10e1d12173c167563e235, using a 4-case regression suite built from a production reproduction of #247. Result: 3 pass, 1 fails. The failing one re-creates the same deadlock this PR is meant to remove, so it is worth a look before merge.

What passes on your head (the #247 fix works):

  • stale zeroed current_frontier_store_id + matching last_finalized_session_id → bind_session() restores the finalized frontier;
  • a genuinely different session still starts at 0;
  • an explicit record_reset() is still honoured (frontier stays 0).

What fails — cross-session rebind can rewind a newer committed checkpoint:

store.bind_session("sess-B", conversation_id=conv)
store.advance_frontier(conv, "sess-B", 500)
store.finalize_session(conv, "sess-B", frontier_store_id=500)

store.bind_session("sess-A", conversation_id=conv)
store.advance_frontier(conv, "sess-A", 900) # A has published up to 900

rebind = store.bind_session("sess-B", conversation_id=conv)
assert rebind.current_frontier_store_id == 900       # FAILS: got 500

Because existing.current_session_id is now sess-A, bind_session() takes the different-session branch, where resume_frontier is still 500 (last_finalized_session_id == "sess-B" and last_reset_at is None), and that branch assigns current_frontier = resume_frontier. The ON CONFLICT(conversation_id) DO UPDATE SET current_frontier_store_id = excluded.current_frontier_store_id then writes 500 over 900. The next leaf pass starts at 500, re-covers ids already claimed by A's published node, and stage_compaction_publication() refuses — i.e. the #247 loop returns.

Note the same-session branch already guards monotonicity (if resume_frontier > existing.current_frontier_store_id); the different-session branch has no equivalent.

Minimal guard (what we run in production, held as a local patch on top of 5505dd8; 900 then survives the rebind):

current_frontier = (
    max(resume_frontier, int(existing.current_frontier_store_id or 0))
    if existing.last_reset_at is None
    else 0
)

Also worth keeping in mind if you port only the same-session half: returning the result of the frontier advance without a fallback can hand the caller None. A shape like restored or existing avoids that dereference.

Happy to open a follow-up PR with the regression test (test_cross_session_takeover_does_not_rewind_a_newer_frontier, plus the three passing cases) if you would rather review it separately than fold it in here — say which you prefer and I will match it.

Thanks for the extensive investigation and the retained-conversation evidence here. The defects this PR targets (end-flush re-ingest after in-place compaction, finalized-checkpoint loss on reopen, and publication conflicts across compaction) were fixed on main a different way in v0.24.0/v0.24.1: #484 (compaction commit proof and same-id finalized-frontier resume), #462, #498, #504 and #510/#515. #247 is closed. Closing as superseded. If a retained-conversation case still fails on current main, please open a fresh issue with a reproduction against v0.24.1, and a new PR against main if one is needed.
