Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 SummaryPriority Level: P4/NIT No current review findings were supplied. No actionable issues or supported P0–P3 priority can be confirmed. Review severity counts are unavailable. No new code review was performed. There are no findings to classify as required or optional for merge. The change adds v4 compaction-emission descriptors scoped to the Hermes home, session, conversation, and reset epoch. It adds a pure projection API that adjusts effective identity only when the proof establishes a unique matching occurrence. Legacy v2/v3 proofs remain descriptor-empty. The change also carries or transfers descriptor provenance through compression and session rotation. It does not switch projection or reconciliation consumers. The supplied summary reports byte-identical returned messages and host-visible behavior, and passing tests, lint, and diff checks. These results are author-reported; no independent validation evidence was provided. The stated validation boundary does not establish merge, release, installed-runtime, fleet, or customer readiness. PR-B is intended to switch consumers. Confidence: 95% for the change summary. No confidence claim about code correctness. WalkthroughThe change records generated-context emissions, binds descriptors to version-4 compaction proofs, and validates projections against returned message occurrences. Session rollover and reset update or clear emission state. Tests cover descriptor generation, projection, proof validation, and ingestion scenarios. ChangesEmission-bound replay identity

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This change adds scoped emission descriptors to compaction proofs without changing what the host sees. One bounded robustness gap remains. If a saved proof row contains a malformed emission entry, each later compression drops its commit proof and never repairs that row. For the affected session, commit skipping and cursor remapping then stop working. This requires prior corruption, and isolating the carry-forward step is a small fix that could land before or shortly after merge. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to A generated-context proof can potentially follow an authored message after the message list changes. Current use appears limited to carrying proofs into later compactions, so this is a provenance risk rather than a demonstrated access-control bypass. Retained concerns

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction proofs are upgraded to version 4 and now persist scoped descriptors for generated summary, objective, and carrier spans.
- Projection can derive an effective message identity by removing a proof-bound generated prefix while retaining the full identity.
- Emission descriptors are carried across compactions, session rotation, and durable proof persistence, and cleared on reset.
- Generated ignored-placeholder objects are retained alongside their object IDs.
Affected invariants:
- Authored message bytes must never be mistaken for generated context.
- Emission provenance must remain bound to one exact occurrence across host rewriting, compaction, restart, and session rotation.
- Tests should be hermetic and independent of unrelated local checkouts.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:216-269 implements descriptor projection.
- compaction.py:596-641 finalizes and carries projected descriptors into new proofs.
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_descriptors.py covers duplicates and prefix collisions but not disappearance followed by ordinal substitution.
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_proof.py:27-28 supplies an absolute ambient checkout default and pinned HEAD.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or PR code were executed.
- No behavior outside the provided files was inspected.
No-finding rationale: No additional defect was validated from the supplied diff without relying on unsupported assumptions about omitted callers or runtime behavior.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction proofs move to version 4 and persist scoped generated-emission descriptors.
- Generated summary, objective, and carrier prefixes can be projected away from effective occurrence identity while retaining the full stored identity.
- Emission descriptors are carried across compactions and compression-boundary session rotation.
- Generated ignored-placeholder objects are strongly retained for the current replay snapshot to prevent object-ID reuse.
Affected invariants:
- Generated spans must never be projected from an authored occurrence.
- Proofs must remain bound to the exact Hermes home, session, conversation, and reset generation.
- Durable or cached proof degradation must fail closed rather than widening generated-content authority.
- Message chronology, retained-source provenance, and session isolation must remain lossless.
Evidence:
- compaction.py:591-677 descriptor finalization, carry-forward, and cache construction
- engine.py:3314-3362 rotation and session binding
- reconcile.py:115-303 descriptor validation and occurrence projection
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_descriptors.py:191-214 occurrence-provenance test
Limitations:
- Review used only the supplied checkout diff as requested.
- No shell commands, project tests, builds, package scripts, or PR code were executed.
- Unchanged callers and runtime behavior outside the supplied diff were not independently inspected.
No-finding rationale: Other possible collision, ordering, persistence, and placeholder-lifetime concerns were not reported because the supplied diff did not validate a supported-path failure beyond the findings above.
Risk Taxonomy
- Release regression: 1
- Runtime correctness: 2

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction proofs advance to version 4 and persist session-, conversation-, home-, and reset-scoped emission descriptors.
- Generated summaries, objectives, and carriers can be projected to effective identities that retain only their proven authored suffix.
- Emission descriptors can survive compression-boundary session rotation and subsequent compactions, while resets and incompatible rebinds clear them.
- Strong references now preserve generated-placeholder object identity while bounding retention to current replay snapshots.
Affected invariants:
- Generated spans must be removed only from the exact proof-bound occurrence; ambiguous or malformed descriptors must fail closed.
- Authored suffixes, retained-source provenance, chronology, tool-bearing rows, and duplicate occurrences must remain distinguishable.
- Proofs must not cross Hermes home, session, conversation, or reset boundaries.
- Legacy version 2/3 proofs must never authorize generated-span projection.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py: version-4 descriptor finalization and occurrence projection validate scope, role, prefix digest, ordinal, and suffix digest.
- compaction.py: descriptors are finalized against returned rows, carried forward only for unique surviving identities, and persisted with binding metadata.
- engine.py and reset_state.py: rotation rekeys descriptor scope; rebind and reset paths invalidate incompatible cached proofs.
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_descriptors.py exercises collisions, host merges, carry-forward, binding invalidation, immutable provenance, and placeholder retention.
Limitations:
- No tests, builds, scripts, shell commands, or arbitrary PR code were executed, as requested.
- Review was limited to the supplied diff; the final test-file patch was truncated and the surrounding checkout could not be inspected without using prohibited shell access.
- The repository review skill could not be loaded without violating the no-shell constraint.
No-finding rationale: No supported-path correctness, security, data-loss, CI, or release regression was validated from the supplied production diff. The new projection path generally fails closed when scope, occurrence, prefix, suffix, or legacy-version evidence is insufficient; unresolved scenarios explicitly retained as strict xfails belong to the stated additive PR-A boundary rather than demonstrating a regression introduced here.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction proofs advance to version 4 and persist session-scoped descriptors for generated summary, objective, and carrier spans.
- Reconciliation can project a proven generated prefix out of an occurrence's effective identity while retaining its full provider-visible identity.
- Emission descriptors can be carried across later compactions and compression-driven session rotation.
- Generated ignored-placeholder objects are retained while their identity-based provenance remains live.
Affected invariants:
- Generated-span projection must remain occurrence-specific and must never strip or misattribute authored suffix content.
- Emission proofs must remain bound to the exact Hermes home, session, conversation, and reset epoch.
- Retained-source provenance must identify the same authored occurrence after host merging, copying, or restart.
- Legacy proofs must not authorize generated-span projection.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:168 defines descriptor finalization and suffix binding.
- reconcile.py:198 discards suffix evidence for all summary/objective descriptors.
- engine.py:7119 creates summary/objective descriptors with retained sources for folded tail carriers.
- reconcile.py:202 projects descriptors using the recorded suffix digest and length.
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_descriptors.py covers carrier replacement rejection but lacks the equivalent folded summary/objective retained-source case.
Limitations:
- No tests, builds, package scripts, shell commands, or PR code were executed, as requested.
- Review was limited to the supplied diff; the prompt truncates part of tests/test_issue_488_emission_proof.py.
- Downstream behavior not present in the supplied diff was not independently executed or proven.
No-finding rationale: Beyond the reported retained-suffix binding defect, the visible descriptor validation generally fails closed on legacy versions, malformed fields, scope mismatches, tool-bearing rows, duplicate identities, and reset/rebind boundaries; no additional high-confidence regression was established from the supplied diff.
Risk Taxonomy

…lerate malformed durable proof history - reconcile: a summary/objective descriptor that carries retained_source is a folded carrier (generated context + a real stored row); its suffix witness is now hashed like a carrier's instead of forced empty, so a same-prefix rewrite of the authored text is not projected onto the old retained source. - reconcile/compaction: the finalizer always hashes the bound row's CURRENT suffix; a carried-forward descriptor no longer inherits the prior witness, so a carrier that absorbed a host-appended turn does not admit a later replacement of that turn. - compaction: a malformed compaction_commit_proof metadata row read as prior emissions no longer aborts proof recording; the fresh proof is written and its durable twin replaces the bad row. Three regression tests, each red on 7bdd778. Refs #488.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Compaction now records version-4, scope-bound descriptors for generated summary, objective, and carrier spans.
- Descriptors are persisted, transferred across compression session rotation, projected onto later message occurrences, and carried into subsequent proofs.
- Generated ignored-placeholder objects are strongly retained only while they remain in active replay snapshots.
Affected invariants:
- Generated spans must be removed or projected only for the exact proven occurrence.
- Retained-source provenance must not survive an authored replacement or unsupported suffix mutation.
- Proofs must remain scoped to Hermes home, session, conversation, and reset epoch.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:272 validates only a hash of
normalized_suffix[:suffix_length], allowing arbitrary trailing bytes. - compaction.py:609-632 uses projected entries to carry descriptors into a fresh proof.
- The added tests cover exact replacement and delimiter-based Hermes append, but not a same-prefix extension without the Hermes delimiter.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; the patch excerpt for tests/test_issue_488_emission_proof.py was truncated.
- No tests, builds, scripts, shell commands, or PR code were executed.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, security, data-loss, CI, Unity, or release-regression issue was validated directly from the provided diff.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Commit-proof version 4 now persists scope-bound emission descriptors for generated summaries, objectives, and carriers.
- Generated prefixes can be projected away from effective identities while retained suffixes remain attributed to their source.
- Emission descriptors are carried across compactions and compression-driven session rotation.
- Generated ignored-placeholder objects are retained strongly and pruned to live replay snapshots.
Affected invariants:
- Authored content must never be classified as generated solely because its bytes resemble a prior emission.
- Proof scope must remain bound to Hermes home, session or conversation, and lifecycle reset epoch.
- Generated placeholder identity tracking must remain bounded without allowing object-ID reuse to alter provenance.
Evidence:
- reconcile.py:225-298 projection matching and suffix validation
- compaction.py:591-681 descriptor finalization and carry-forward
- engine.py:3342-3364 proof-binding validation
- engine.py:4801-4864 placeholder-retention refresh
- tests/test_issue_488_emission_descriptors.py singleton, collision, rotation, and retention coverage
Limitations:
- The supplied patch was truncated within tests/test_issue_488_emission_proof.py.
- Per instruction, no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or arbitrary PR code were run.
- Unchanged call sites outside the supplied diff were not inspected.
No-finding rationale: No additional issue was reported without a concrete failing state transition or invariant violation visible in the supplied diff.
Risk Taxonomy
- Proof gap: 1
- Runtime correctness: 1

272-275: Suffix check still accepts any extension of the recorded suffix (confidence 80%)The check only confirms that
normalized_suffixstarts with the recorded suffix. Any extension passes, not only the Hermes\n\nmerge. For example, span + "retained"rewritten tospan + "retained but edited"still projects. It keeps the oldretained_source.
_record_compress_commit_proofthen carries that projection forward and records the edited suffix as the new witness. The wrong attribution becomes durable. This was raised in an earlier review and I see no fix or reply. Accept only an exact suffix match, or an extension where
normalized_suffix[suffix_length:]starts with\n\n.Proposed tightening

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
A bad saved emission entry blocks every later commit proof (confidence 75%)
Where the error comes from: only _durable_commit_proof_payload() is inside a try (Lines 609-612). Projecting the prior proof and carrying descriptors forward are not. Both can raise on a saved v4 emission that has the right scope but a bad shape:
(descriptor.get("output_occurrence") or {}).get("index")in_project_emitted_occurrencesraisesAttributeErrorwhenoutput_occurrenceis a truthy value that is not a dict, such as a list.retained_sourceis passed through unchanged when it is not aMapping.dict(entry.retained_source)at Line 626 then raisesTypeError/ValueErrorwhen it is an int or a string.
Impact: the outer except Exception sets _compress_commit_proof = None and returns before _persist_compress_commit_proof. The bad durable row is never replaced. Every later compress() loads the same row and loses its proof again. As a result, session-end commit skipping and host-merge cursor remapping stop working for that session.
This breaks the PR's stated goal of replacing malformed prior proof metadata with the fresh proof. The existing test only covers a JSON parse error ("{not json").
Fix: put carry-forward in its own try. On failure, drop the carried descriptors and keep the fresh ones.

What
Add PR-A's scoped v4 compaction-emission descriptors and a pure projection API for summary, carrier, and objective occurrences.
Why
PR-B needs exact, persisted proof of which returned spans LCM generated before it can safely distinguish them from authored content. Indexes remain advisory; scope, order, span length, and SHA-256 bind each descriptor.
Changes
Disclosure
Fix round 2 addresses F1–F3. Fix round 3 addresses N1's cross-role path. Fix round 4 closes the same-role residual by preferring the constructed row object and requiring a unique identity fallback after copies; it also closes N2 by making finalization and projection count the same tool-free population. Ambiguous copies and Hermes merges that remove the required occurrence fail closed with no descriptor. No projection consumer or reconciliation matcher was switched. Returned messages and host-visible behavior remain byte-identical.
