astral-sh/ruff-pre-commit (pre-commit) v0.16.1 -> v0.16.4

Risk: 🟢 Safe

The Deep Dive

Update Scope

The single-file PR updates the Ruff pre-commit revision from v0.16.1 to v0.16.4, installing Ruff 0.16.4 for both ruff --fix and ruff-format. Hook arguments, other hooks, Nix/Python pins, and deployed infrastructure are unchanged. The upstream wrapper diff changes the exact Ruff dependency, README examples, and an upstream-only mirroring action; its executable hook definitions are unchanged.

Performance & Stability

  • Faster native builds: 0.16.3 enables profile-guided optimization for Linux x86-64/ARM64, Windows x86-64, and macOS ARM64 and reduces expression-node size. These improvements activate automatically with the matching binaries; the repository’s Linux CI uses the affected platform, but no repository-specific speedup was measured. Release details.
  • Parser and CPU resilience: 0.16.4 guarantees parser stack space, checks packed AST indices, and fixes s390x release assembly. It also reverses the intermediate 0.16.3 mimalloc-v3 change that crashed older Windows CPUs without POPCNT; the proposed version uses mimalloc v2. These are automatic stability changes, with no remaining platform failure observed in successful Ruff CI run; contributors’ Windows CPU models are not visible in CI mode. Stack handling, AST bounds, s390x, Windows fix.

Features & UX

  • Optional lint improvements: Preview adds UP048 (while 1 → while True), a PTH116 autofix, and safer detection for negative-number PLR6104, list-only FURB131, and file-descriptor FURB101/FURB103. Using these requires preview and the relevant rules; hook configuration enables neither explicitly, and no project-owned tracked Ruff configuration was found. External developer settings remain unknown. 0.16.3, 0.16.4.
  • Editor and terminal conveniences: The bundled server avoids offering TOML formatting, supports notebook-cell pull diagnostics, and exposes display-only fixes while preferring safe fixes; statistics output gains rule hyperlinks. These require an editor using the updated binary or an explicit --statistics invocation. The configured hooks run only check/format, so this PR does not establish an editor upgrade or activate statistics output. Server registration, notebooks, code actions, statistics, hook configuration.

Key Fixes

  • More accurate diagnostics without a migration: Duplicate call keywords and parameters declared nonlocal are now detected; semantic errors in string annotations honor F722 instead of bypassing its selection. These corrections automatically affect parsing and selected checks, and the existing tracked corpus passes successful Ruff CI run. Duplicate keywords, nonlocal parameters, string annotations.
  • Fewer false positives in enabled rules: Fixes cover PYI041 singledispatch functions, Pylint continue/finally handling and percent-format checks, and RUF012 ctypes subclasses. These rules appear in the 0.16.4 default selection; they need no hook change, although the repository has not demonstrated every triggering construct. 0.16.2, 0.16.3, ctypes exception.
  • Opt-in rule corrections: Subprocess security rules now inspect keyword arguments; NumPy NPY201 fixes preserve older-version compatibility; PLC2701 allows os._exit. These are not selected by the default rule list or explicitly by hook configuration, so their corrections do not establish a new check in this PR. Keyword arguments, NumPy fix, private imports.

Newer Versions

  • 0.16.5 and 0.16.6 are available: Released August 27 and September 3 respectively, after the proposed August 20 release. They add preview rule-selection capabilities and further diagnostic fixes. Their existence alone does not make this delayed patch unsafe. 0.16.5, 0.16.6.
  • Later fixes do not establish a new regression here: 0.16.6 fixes a B031 match/groupby panic reported against 0.15.20, predating both endpoints. A formatter corruption report explicitly reproduces on 0.16.1 as well as 0.16.4. An isolated stdin probe reproduced the SIM401 lambda-default false positive in both 0.16.1 and 0.16.4, with no diagnostic in 0.16.5; its suggested fix is unsafe and the configured hook does not request unsafe fixes. These pre-existing issues do not raise this update’s risk. B031 report, formatter report, SIM401 fix.

Hazards & Risks

None identified that requires targeted validation beyond the normal workflow. Both configured hooks passed the successful Ruff CI run, and the exact upstream hook diff adds no executable hook, permission, credential access, or runtime download mechanism. The upstream mirroring workflow switches setup-uv 8.3.2 → 9.0.0; its cache-pruning default change affects upstream automation, not this repository’s hook execution. Ruff’s Python requirement remains ≥3.7 and its Rust build requirement remains 1.95; no application state or schema migration is involved in the PR.

Sources

🟢 Verdict: Safe

Routine update for the configured lint/fix and formatting hooks: the exact wrapper diff preserves execution behavior and both hooks passed successful Ruff CI run. No unresolved introduced regression or migration concern was identified in the release range.
