The exported Dropdown prop alias introduces a compile-time breaking change, and the new fail-closed Turbo parser has an untested option-parsing hole.

bulma-ui/src/components/Dropdown.tsx:411
- This changes the exported bare
DropdownItemPropsfrom accepting all three supportedasvalues to accepting only the default anchor. Existing wrappers or objects typed asDropdownItemPropswithas: 'div'/'button'will therefore stop compiling even though the component still supports them. Preserve the previous public alias surface with a distributive default union (and teach the extractor that shape) rather than pinning this new breaking change as an expected error.
scripts/check-conformance.mjs:3614 - This new non-trivial command parser has no automated test, despite the repository rule in
.github/CLAUDE.md:336-345requiring parsing inscripts/*.mjsto have anode --testsibling. Add fixture-driven coverage for direct tasks, root-script indirection, value-taking and boolean flags, and a missing task so the fail-closed behavior cannot regress.
bulma-ui/src/elements/Icon.tsx:52 - Formatting the text as “DEPRECATED” does not mark this prop deprecated to TypeScript tooling; the generated structured API data consequently still reports
deprecated: false. Add an actual@deprecatedJSDoc tag to bothicondeclarations and regenerate the docs/MCP index so editor diagnostics and machine-readable metadata agree with the public documentation.

- The PR description explicitly says
typecheck:testsis deliberately not part of the React 18/19 matrix because both legs use the same@types/react, but this adds it to that matrix anyway. Remove this step or update the stated design decision; as written, the implementation and review contract disagree and CI pays for a duplicate check.
# `pin-react.mjs` pins react/react-dom and never @types/react, so today
# both legs read one set of types and this adds no signal the
# single-version job lacks — but that is equally true of the step above,
# and running one without the other reads as an oversight. If the types

- This makes the deprecated
iconpath part of Icon's public prop contract, butIcon.stories.tsxis unchanged and does not expose or exercise that path. The component anatomy rule requires prop-level changes to update both the Storybook story and API docs (bulma-ui/CLAUDE.md:20-30); add a deprecated-path story or equivalent story metadata alongside the generated docs update.

`DropdownItemProps` pinned every prop to `React.HTMLAttributes<HTMLElement>` while `as` offered `'a' | 'div' | 'button'`, so `href` and `target` under `as="a"`, and `type` and `form` under `as="button"`, were rejected although all of them have always worked at runtime and the docs page shows the anchor form. This is #641 in the narrower shape a constrained `as` takes; #661 fixed the eight components with an open `React.ElementType`. The item is now generic over its three allowed tags, through a constrained variant of the ref-less polymorphic component type. A union of the three prop shapes would have read as equivalent and let `<Dropdown.Item as="div" href>` through: against a union target an object literal's excess-property check passes if the key exists in any member, so the check has to run after `T` is inferred from `as`. `__typetests__` pins both halves -- each member compiles, and every HTML intrinsic outside the three does not. Refs #663
`IconProps` was a union of `name` and `children`, with no member for the deprecated `icon` class string -- so `<Icon icon="fas fa-star" />` failed both members and every consumer still on that prop got a type error. The runtime has always accepted it, parsing the library prefix off the string and falling through to the `name` path; the implementation even carried a cast for "legacy callers that bypass the type", which is a deprecation announced only to whoever tries it. `IconDeprecatedProps` declares the path instead. It stays deprecated and goes when the prop does. Three tests in `Icon.test.tsx` were exercising this path and were the evidence that it works. Refs #663
…tches Each of these was invisible because nothing type-checks a story. `Sidebar` asked a `SubTitle` for `size="7"`, but Bulma's subtitle sizes stop at 6, so `is-7` styled nothing. `useBulmaClasses` asked four columns for `size="one-half"`; the Bulma modifier is `is-half`, so those columns fell back to full width. The date and time stories passed `gap` to a `Block`, which is a `Grid` prop -- it reached the DOM as a stray attribute and spaced nothing, so it goes: the stacked Bulma fields already space themselves, which is what those stories have always rendered. A raw `is-gap-4` would style it, but stories space with `m*`/`p*` here, and a hardcoded helper class skips the `ConfigProvider` prefix. The `Dialog` types story compared its type against `'default'`, a member its own list omitted. The true branch was dead, so the neutral dialog the story means to show has never rendered; the list now has it. Refs #663
Twenty unused `React` imports go -- the jsx runtime is `react-jsx`, so nothing needed them. The rest were each hiding something. `prefix-sweep` gave `Tab` a `label`, which `Tab` does not have and which reached the `<li>` as a stray attribute; it takes `index`, which is required. `Card.test` called `renderFooter` with one argument of two. `Rate.test` typed its `customIcon` mock with no parameters, so `mock.calls` was an empty tuple and every property read went through a cast; typing the mock deletes the casts and checks the shape. `Autocomplete.test` cast an item to a type it still did not satisfy, when the point is an item satisfying neither `field` nor `value`. `Content.test` passes three invalid Bulma values to prove they are dropped, so each gets its own `@ts-expect-error` -- which now fails loudly if one of them ever becomes valid. `Menu.test` already had a directive for its `<span href>` case, spread over two lines, which suppressed nothing: TypeScript anchors `@ts-expect-error` to the line a comment STARTS on, so a multi-line one never lands on the line below it. The reason keeps its own comment and the directive gets a single line. Refs #663
Nothing looked at either, for two independent reasons. ts-jest gates its language service on `isolatedModules`, which the root tsconfig sets, so `pnpm test` transpiles types away rather than checking them; and `bulma-ui/tsconfig.json` excludes `__tests__`, `*.test.tsx` and `*.stories.*`. Storybook's vite builder does not type-check, and typescript-eslint's type-aware rules do not surface compiler errors. Sixty-one had accumulated, and an `@ts-expect-error` in a test file suppressed nothing because nothing looked. `tsconfig.test.json` is a second project rather than a lifting of those excludes: that file is also the build's program, through `@rollup/plugin-typescript` with `declaration: true`, and tests and stories do not belong in the published declaration emit. `types/assets.d.ts` is outside `src/` for the same reason -- it tells tsc what Vite resolves an `.svg` import to, without joining the emit program. `isolatedModules` stays as it is. A separate tsc pass is a better gate than making every jest run pay for the language service, and it is what gives an `@ts-expect-error` in a test file its meaning back. Closes #663
…r of IconProps
Declaring the deprecated path on `IconProps` made `{ icon: '…' }` a legal icon
config, and three places that consume that type had not been told.
`Control` and `IconText` discriminate an icon config from a custom node by
testing `'name' in value || 'children' in value`. The new member matched
neither, so it fell through to the node branch and React threw "Objects are not
valid as a React child" — a blank screen, not a warning, reachable from
`Control`, `Input`, `Select`, the three date and time inputs, `Field`,
`Autocomplete` and `IconText`. Both guards now name every member, with a
comment saying why a missing one is a crash rather than a fallthrough.
`Panel.Icon` re-declares the union by hand and had to gain the member too:
without it the deprecated path compiled on `Icon` and failed on `Panel.Icon`
with an error naming `children`, while this PR's own regenerated panel.md
advertised the prop there.
The TSDoc example was also wrong in the other direction: `icon` names the
glyph, it does not select the library, so `'mdi mdi-rocket'` alone renders an
`fa` class. It said so on six surfaces including the MCP index. Corrected at
the source, which is why `Icon.test.tsx` has to pass `library` beside it.
Refs #663
…nchor
Deriving `href` from `as` gave the item an attribute it had never declared, and
nothing stopped that attribute reaching a `<div>` or a `<button>`, where it is
invalid HTML and does nothing. The type stops a direct caller; a plain-JS one,
a loose `{...props}` spread and a `React.memo` wrapper all get past it. Menu
carries the same guard and says deriving `href` from `as` must not quietly
widen where it lands — that rule became applicable here the moment the props
followed `as`. The condition is shorter than Menu's because `as` is closed to
three intrinsic tags, so no custom component can arrive.
Two claims in the same change were overstated and are now pinned rather than
asserted in prose. Genericity closes the excess-property hole for a LITERAL
`as`; a union-typed one infers `T` as the union and lands back in the
permissive check, which is the open-`as` behaviour too and deliberate there.
And the bare `DropdownItemProps` alias is the default element's shape, not the
union it used to be — the #667 limitation Button already carries, now with
its own directives so the day #667 lands they go unused and say so.
The docs extractor learned the difference as well: it promised "the element or
component selected by `as`" on a component whose `as` takes no component,
which the typetest here explicitly rejects.
Refs #663
`turbo run <task>` exits 0 printing "0 total" when nothing in scope implements the task, so `typecheck:tests` — which only bulma-ui has — would have gone green in `pnpm all`, in its new CI step and in the root script at once if the script were ever renamed. A gate that passes having checked nothing is the shape this repo rejects everywhere else. The check reads the tasks out of the root `all` chain rather than keeping a second list, so a task added there is covered without a step to remember. Refs #663
…uard
`'icon' in value` was too loose. A Font Awesome `IconDefinition` is
`{ prefix, iconName, icon: [w, h, …, path] }` — an `icon` key whose value is a
path array, not a class string — so the guard claimed it and rendered a blank
icon container that still reserved layout, where before it reached React and
said what was wrong. Testing the member's value rather than its presence keeps
the deprecated path and sends that object back to the node branch.
The guard also existed twice, byte for byte, and the previous fix had to be
typed into both copies. It now lives once in `elements/iconProps.ts` — its own
module rather than `Icon.tsx`, because `src/index.ts` wildcard-exports that file
and everything published there is public forever; `polymorphic.ts` makes the
same call for `isCustomElement`. `Control`'s test mock no longer stubs it, since
stubbing the discriminator means testing the stub.
Refs #663
…s in `as="button"` rendered a `<button>` with no `type`, so it inherited the HTML default `submit` and posted any enclosing form on every click — a sort or filter menu inside a settings form is ordinary. Defaulted to `type="button"`, spread before `rest` so an explicit one still wins. Avatar does exactly this, and Dropdown's own trigger already set it; deriving the button's props from `as` made the gap reachable by more callers, not fewer. The runtime guard withheld only `href`, while the type had started deriving the whole anchor surface, so `target`, `download`, `ping` and the rest still reached a `<div>`. `bestax-migrate` strips exactly that set when it migrates onto a non-anchor, which left the codemod stricter than the component it migrates to. Two corrections to prose that pointed the wrong way. The HOC note said erasure makes the checks looser and gave an example that does not compile; erasure takes the LAST call signature, so a wrapper collapses onto the default element and gets stricter — `React.memo(Dropdown.Item)` renders neither a `<div>` nor a `<button>`. Pinned both directions. And `Content.test` had a fourth invalid attribute that raised no error only because three others on the same element absorbed the report, so it now stands in its own render with its own directive. Refs #663
The turbo-tasks check stopped scanning a segment at its first flag, so `turbo run --filter=X <task>` contributed no tasks at all — a fail-open inside the check written to close one. It also read only the literal text of `all`, which reaches `lint` through one `pnpm run` hop, leaving the repo's own lint task outside the contract the check states. Flags are now skipped rather than terminal, and one level of indirection is followed. The docs extractor's constraint reader had the same shape of problem: it returned a boolean, and the false branch selects the LONGER promise, so a constraint it could not read over-promised — the exact defect it was added to fix, and the opposite of what its own comment claimed. It reports a kind now, with both recognized kinds detected positively, and a test holds every polymorphic component to one of them. Verified by moving `DropdownItemElement` to another file: the reader's same-file alias hop fails, and the test says so instead of the docs and the MCP index quietly regressing. Refs #663
Root CLAUDE.md listed the quality gates without `typecheck:tests`, and that file asks to be kept accurate — it is also what CodeRabbit and the @claude action read. It now carries the two consequences a contributor acts on: a directive in a test or story is live and fails as TS2578 once it stops being needed, and in JSX it must sit in its own single-line comment. The React matrix gains the same step. It adds no signal today — `pin-react.mjs` pins react/react-dom and never `@types/react` — but that is equally true of the `typecheck` step beside it, and running one without the other reads as an oversight rather than the decision it was. The contributor skill now names `ConstrainedPolymorphicComponentWithoutRef` and the two consequences of reaching for it: the exported alias is the default element's shape, and a wrapping HOC collapses onto that default rather than loosening. For example, turbo run build && turbo run --filter=@scope/ui buildpasses this check when some other package ownsbuild, even if@scope/uihas nobuildscript and the second command runs zero tasks. Track unfiltered ownership separately from the union of filtered scopes and validate both; the test that currently says the unfiltered run “wins” should be updated accordingly.

…loses it The note explaining why the deprecated `icon` path had no type said "nothing type-checks tests or stories" in the present tense, which the same PR makes false. Rewritten as history, and pointed at what that gap actually cost: the three `Icon.test.tsx` cases exercising this path proved the runtime and said nothing at all about the type. Refs #663

The migration remedy currently recommends placing an anchor inside an iframe, whose HTML content model permits no children.

iframecannot contain an anchor: its HTML content model is “nothing,” so markup between its tags is not a usable child/fallback. Becauseiframeis only classified as non-wrappable here, nestOrClick('iframe', true)falls through to “put it on an inside”; the new test atspecials.test.ts:713-718explicitly locks in that invalid migration advice. Please classifyiframeas disallowing anchor children too and update that test to expect the click-based remedy.

Splitting the rule in two was right; the membership was still guessed rather than read. `iframe`'s content model is "nothing" — markup between its tags is not a usable child — so it refuses an `<a>` child as firmly as a `<button>` does, and belonged in both sets rather than only the wrapper one. `label` is the mirror image: interactive, so no `<a>` may wrap it, but its content model is phrasing content excluding labelable controls and nested labels, and an `<a>` is neither — so nesting is valid and was being suppressed. The two sets now differ by exactly `details` and `label`, which is the evidence that two questions really are being asked. Both reviewers flagged the `iframe` half; the `label` half came with the spec citation. Refs #663

- This guidance contradicts the implementation and its type tests.
DropdownItemPropsdefaultsTto the fullDropdownItemElementunion, so its bare form exposes only keys shared by the three tags; only the component call/derivation overload defaults to<a>. The PR description repeats the same incorrect “default element’s shape” claim, so contributors following this shipped skill would encode the wrong contract.

The guide told contributors to expect the exported `*Props<T>` alias to be the
default element's shape. That was true of an earlier draft of this branch and
is the shape it deliberately does NOT ship: narrowing the alias breaks
`const p: SomeProps = { as: 'div' }` for existing consumers, so `T` defaults to
the whole union instead.
Worth correcting carefully rather than deleting, because this file is a shipped
product — bundled into create-bestax and served by the MCP server — so a
contributor following it would have encoded the contract this PR rejected.

…eached The branch that tells `meta`, `col`, `source` and `track` to stop being the link was the only one of the four with no test: the existing cases covered interactive tags, wrappable void tags and ordinary containers, so both of its messages could have regressed unnoticed. `area` is deliberately not among the tags exercised. It is in the set for correctness, and is unreachable through this path because it really does take `href` and `target` — the element check keeps them and the remedy never runs. Refs #663

The broad cross-package API, codemod, generated-data, CI, and release-order implications warrant final human verification.

Closes #663.
Important
Do not squash-merge this. The PR title becomes the squash commit, and
bestax-migrate/release.config.jsopens with{ scope: '!(bestax-migrate)', release: false }— so afix(bulma-ui)squash commit publishes bulma-ui and silently suppresses thebestax-migraterelease. The codemod fix would land in the repo and never reach users, while the library change it depends on does ship. Merge with rebase or a merge commit so both scoped commits reachmainand each package's semantic-release picks up its own.The two halves cannot be separate PRs:
bestax-migrate's e2e tests typecheck its tables against the built library, so the library change alone fails them and the codemod change alone fails them too. Verified both directions. The change is atomic across the two packages; only the merge method can express that.Nothing type-checked the tests or the stories, for two independent reasons: ts-jest gates its language service on
isolatedModules, which the root tsconfig sets, sopnpm testtranspiles types away; andbulma-ui/tsconfig.jsonexcludes__tests__,*.test.tsxand*.stories.*. Storybook's vite builder doesn't type-check either, and typescript-eslint's type-aware rules don't surface compiler errors. 61 errors had accumulated, and an@ts-expect-errorin a test file suppressed nothing because nothing looked. The gate
bulma-ui/tsconfig.test.jsonis a second project rather than a lifting of those excludes — that file is also the build's program, via@rollup/plugin-typescriptwithdeclaration: true, and tests and stories don't belong in the published declaration emit.types/assets.d.tssits outsidesrc/for the same reason.typecheck:testsruns inpnpm all, in CI, and in the React 18/19 matrix. The matrix leg adds no signal today —pin-react.mjspinsreact/react-domand never@types/react— but that is equally true of thetypecheckstep beside it, and running one without the other reads as an oversight. Both
typechecksteps stay, for a reason worth stating because it is not obvious:tsconfig.test.jsonextends the build config and replaces its include/exclude rather than merging, so its program is a strict superset and the narrow step cannot change an outcome on file coverage alone. What it asserts is that the shipped program type-checks withouttypes/assets.d.ts— and itsdeclare module '*.svg'— in scope. That matters more than it sounds:@rollup/plugin-typescriptreports semantic errors as warnings, sopnpm buildsucceeds on source that does not type-check. These two steps, not the build, are what stands between a type error and a published package. The real bugs behind the 61
Sidebar.storiesasked aSubTitleforsize="7"; Bulma stops at 6, sois-7styled nothing.Dialog.storiescompared its type against'default', a member its own list omitted — the true branch was dead, so the neutral dialog the story means to show had never rendered.Dropdown.Itempinned every prop toReact.HTMLAttributes<HTMLElement>whileasoffered'a' | 'div' | 'button', rejectinghref/targeton the anchor andtype/formon the button — all of which have always worked at runtime, and the docs page shows the anchor form. This is [Bug] bulma-ui: props and ref types do not follow the polymorphicas#641 in the narrower shape a constrainedastakes.Icon's deprecatediconprop had no union member, so every consumer still on it got a type error. The implementation carried a cast for "legacy callers that bypass the type" — a deprecation announced only to whoever tries it.Two more the sweep found that the issue didn't name: four columns asking for

Three rounds of review (Copilot ×3, plus two local
/code-reviewpasses) each found real defects in the previous round's work. Worth listing, because they are the substance of the branch rather than the type errors:{ icon: '…' }crashed two components. Declaring the deprecated path made it a legal icon config, butControlandIconTextdiscriminated on'name' in value || 'children' in value— it matched neither, fell to the node branch, and React threw "Objects are not valid as a React child". Reachable fromControl,Input,Select, the three date/time inputs,Field,AutocompleteandIconText.'icon' in valueclaims a Font AwesomeIconDefinition— whoseiconis a path array, not a class string — turning the crash into a silent blank icon. The guard now tests each member's value, lives in one place, and deliberately sits outside the wildcard-exported module so it does not become public API forever.<Dropdown.Item as="button">submitted its enclosing form.<button>defaults totype="submit". Defaulted it, then found the default was erased bytype={undefined}arriving through a spread, so it now reads through the forwarded props.hrefstrip covered onlyhrefwhile the type derived the whole anchor surface, sotarget/download/pingstill reached a<div>.bestax-migratealready strips exactly that set, which left the codemod stricter than the component.turbo run --filter=X taskcontributed no tasks, thenturbo run --force buildswallowedbuild. Both were found by review rather than by a test, which is what.github/CLAUDE.mdasks anode --testsibling to prevent; the parser is now extracted and covered.Known follow-ups
Level.Itemis the same defect — [Bug] bulma-ui: Level.Item's props do not follow its constrainedas, in both directions #672.<Level.Item as="a" download="f" />fails to compile while<Level.Item as="div" href>compiles and is dropped at runtime.DropdownItemPropsdefaults its type parameter to the whole'a' | 'div' | 'button'union, so every shape that compiled before still compiles —{ as: 'div' }included. The cost is the one [Bug] bulma-ui: the public*Propsaliases don't distribute like their components do #667 describes: the alias is not distributive, so the bare form carries only the keys the three tags share and therefore nohref— exactly what it carried before, so nothing regresses.DropdownItemProps<'a'>is the anchor's shape, and the component has full precision at every call site. Making the alias distributive was tried and reproduces [Bug] bulma-ui: the public*Propsaliases don't distribute like their components do #667's extractor failure on a second component (the props table falls from six rows to two), so [Bug] bulma-ui: the public*Propsaliases don't distribute like their components do #667 now carries that measurement and thenext-majorlabel.bestax-migrate'sBESTAX_RANGEis^5, so a migrated project could install a 5.x predating this fix. npm resolves^5forward, and it is the same exposure every existingHREF_OKrow carries.Verification
pnpm allgreen,check:conformancegreen, all four generators current,node --test "scripts/*.test.mjs"green, coverage 99.6 / 99.08 / 99.76 / 99.83 against the 99% bar.The dead-
gapdocs sweep that was part of this branch is split out — it is independent, releases nothing, and removing it brings this PR under CodeRabbit's 100-file review limit, which it had been silently skipping.Summary by CodeRabbit
