docs(build): fix protoc, Python and binding features in building-from-source - #17608
Following Building from Source on Ubuntu 22.04 fails at the bindings build, and on any OS it produces bindings that cannot start the standalone KV indexer. This PR fixes the guide so it works as written.
Key Changes
Docs only (0 core-logic lines). English page and zh-CN mirror:
Step 1:protoc must be 3.15 or newer. Ubuntu 24.04's apt package is enough; on Ubuntu 22.04, install protoc 30.2 (the CI version) from the protobuf releases.
Step 5:maturin develop --uv --features kv-indexer,slot-tracker,select-service,mm-routing,ais-forward-pass,request-trace-s3, the release-wheel set from container/templates/wheel_builder.Dockerfile without nvtx (named as optional).
Two Troubleshooting entries that map each error to its fix.
Validation
Ran on Ubuntu 22.04 (workstation and stock ubuntu:22.04 container), rustc 1.96.1:
Case
Before
After
Step 5 with apt protoc 3.12.4
dynamo-llm build script fails: relay.proto: This file contains proto3 optional fields, but --experimental_allow_proto3_optional was not set
Documented protoc 30.2 install compiles relay.proto; full build passes. Ubuntu 24.04 apt protoc 3.21.12 also compiles it
Step 3 on stock 22.04
uv venv .venv downloads CPython 3.15.2, which has no vllm==0.32.0 or sglang==0.5.22 wheels (SGLang ships cp311–cp313); forcing system Python 3.10 fails uv pip install -e . on requires-python >=3.11
uv venv --python 3.12 resolves vllm==0.32.0 from wheels
Step 5 default features
python -m dynamo.indexer --help → dynamo.indexer is not available in this build; reinstall with --features kv-indexer
With the documented features, dynamo.indexer, dynamo.slot_tracker and dynamo.select_service all start
Steps 3–8 as now written, Python 3.12
n/a
All pass, including uv pip install -e . without --prerelease=allow and python3 -m dynamo.frontend --help
Updated the build-from-source guide with protoc requirements and Ubuntu-specific installation steps.
Clarified how to set up a Python 3.12 virtual environment and build Rust bindings with the required features, including optional Nsight Systems annotations.
Added troubleshooting steps for proto3 optional-field errors and unavailable dynamo.indexer builds.
Updated the Chinese translation to reflect these changes.
…-source
- Step 1: protoc must be 3.15+; Ubuntu 22.04 installs protoc 30.2 from the
protobuf releases (apt ships 3.12, which rejects relay.proto).
- Step 3: create the venv with Python 3.12; uv downloads it if needed.
- Step 5: build the bindings with the release wheel's feature set so
dynamo.indexer, slot_tracker and select_service work.
- Troubleshooting entries for both errors; zh-CN mirror updated.

The English and Chinese source-build guides now specify protoc and Python versions, a Rust binding feature list, optional nvtx support, and troubleshooting steps for protoc and dynamo.indexer build issues.
Both guides document Ubuntu-specific protoc setup and Python 3.12 virtual-environment setup.
Rust build and troubleshooting docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/advanced-customizations/building-from-source.md, docs/fern/translations/zh-CN/pages/developer-guide/advanced-customizations/building-from-source.md
Both guides document the release-wheel feature list for maturin develop, optional nvtx support, and troubleshooting steps for protoc and dynamo.indexer build issues.
The build instructions contain a minor feature-description inconsistency; the omitted nvtx feature is optional.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The Chinese guide still claims the command uses the same features as the release wheel, but the referenced wheel build always enables nvtx while this command omits it. Clarify that the development command excludes optional nvtx.

Step 5 now offers a plain `maturin develop --uv` first and the
release-wheel feature build second, and names what the minimal build
leaves out. Same change in the zh-CN mirror.
