Overview

Cover runtime-selected KV block sizes in the existing real AISimulate-to-DGD CLI table and remove the temporary explicit block-size override from the DGDR ClusterEnv fixture. An omitted or explicitly null block size must stay unset through Candidate creation and deployment rendering.

Key Changes

Core production-logic change: 0 lines. No Kubernetes API changes. The PR contains 8 test/fixture/documentation files, +29/-17 lines.

  • Reuse the existing aggregated, disaggregated, router/Kustomize and Pareto CLI cases. Aggregated omits kv_cache.block_size; router/Kustomize sets it to null; the other cases retain explicit block sizes.
  • Derive the expected block size from the input fixture and check the Candidate and emitted command independently. Missing/null values must omit --block-size. Retain exact Candidate-to-deployment assertions and use a deployable, 64-aligned Pareto token budget.
  • Remove the temporary DGDR v1beta2 ClusterEnv override and update the aggregated DGD golden to omit the runtime flag. Keep generator-dependent imports local to the renderer test so optional-dependency collection continues to work.

Validation

  • Scoped pre-commit checks passed for all eight files.
  • Python syntax and changed YAML fixtures parse successfully; git diff --check passes.
  • Full real-CLI/renderer and ClusterEnv validation is pending on this reduced head. The local venv lacks AISimulate, the Dynamo runtime and Pydantic; the local Docker daemon is stopped. No functional test result is claimed for this head.

Dependency prerequisite

All dependency declarations, Cargo lockfiles, dependency-version documentation, and bump-only telemetry, cancellation, optimizer and backend-version golden adjustments match main exactly. They are outside this PR.

The freshly fetched main baseline 11e5fcf172 still pins AISimulate Nightly 87. The unset-block-size path requires ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609; preservation of evaluated deployment limits also requires ai-dynamo/aisimulate#702. Dependency integration on main must provide these fixes before the corresponding regression paths can pass.

Issues and Ongoing Work

Pull Request Checklist
  • I used Dynamo's /pr-checklist skill.

Walkthrough

Adds a parameterized test for installed AISimulate rendering of aggregated vLLM candidates when agg_block_size is omitted or None. The test checks that the rendered worker arguments omit --block-size.

components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/test_renderers.py
A parameterized test renders an aggregated vLLM candidate with agg_block_size omitted or set to None. It checks that the worker arguments do not contain --block-size.

The new regression test fails against the currently pinned AISimulate generator, so merging as-is would put a failing pre-merge test on the main branch. Pin a generator build that includes the upstream block-size fix first, or otherwise gate the test, before merging.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The only change is a parameterized regression test in components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/tests/dgd/test_renderers.py. It directly covers the omitted and null block-size cases required by #17581. No unrelated production logic or workaround was added.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes all required sections: Overview, Key Changes, Validation, and Issues and Ongoing Work. It explains the test scope, dependency prerequisite, validation status, and linked work. The checklist is also completed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The change adds the required installed-consumer test for both omitted and explicit null agg_block_size values. The test uses deployment_target="dynamo-python" and checks that the generated worker omits --block-size. However, the reviewed dependency still rejects both cases with candidate.config.agg_block_size must be a positive integer. Therefore, the expected successful rendering in #17581 is not met at the reviewed head.

Resolution

Publish the fix from ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609 and update Dynamo's AISimulate dependency pin. Then run the new contract test and confirm that both cases render successfully without --block-size.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Move both imports to module scope.

aisimulate is a declared project dependency, so the optional-dependency collection exception does not apply to this test. Move both imports to the module import section.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The newly added pre-merge test still fails in both parameterized cases because the reviewed head remains pinned to aisimulate==0.13.0.dev202610280000000086, whose from_candidate rejects omitted or null agg_block_size. Update the pin to a build containing the upstream validation fix before merging.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: the reviewed head still pins aisimulate==0.13.0.dev202610280000000086, and the PR's validation states that both newly added cases fail in from_candidate with candidate.config.agg_block_size must be a positive integer. The pre-merge regression test therefore remains red until a release containing ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609 is pinned.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: the reviewed head still pins aisimulate==0.13.0.dev202610280000000086, while the required unset-block-size change remains in the open upstream ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609. Consequently, both newly added pre-merge cases reach the pinned generator's required positive-integer validation and fail before rendering. Update the dependency pin after the upstream fix is published and verify both cases pass.

Addressed the import review feedback in 6510fcf:

  • Moved the Dynamo vllm modifier import to module scope and removed duplicate local imports.
  • Kept ModelFacts deferred, with a short explanation: tests/report_pytest_markers.py collects the suite using AISimulate stubs that do not contain generator.request.schema. Moving that import to module scope was tested and breaks marker collection with ModuleNotFoundError; keeping it deferred makes the full pre-commit run pass.

Validation: all applicable pre-commit checks pass, including the marker report; the current omitted/null regression passes both cases against the actual AISimulate #609 CI wheel. The commit is pushed and GitHub reports its GPG signature as Verified.

The PR remains blocked on publishing the upstream fix and updating Dynamo's pin, as detailed in the open dependency thread.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The reviewed dependency pin still rejects both newly added omitted/null cases with candidate.config.agg_block_size must be a positive integer, so this module-scoped pre_merge test remains red. The author and latest thread reply confirm no published build containing ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609 is available yet; update the canonical pin once published and verify both cases pass.
  • Original discussion: The reviewed head still does not update the AISimulate dependency pin, so both newly selected pre-merge cases fail against the pinned package with SweeperCandidateError: candidate.config.agg_block_size must be a positive integer. The latest thread confirms that no corrected published build is available yet.
  • Original discussion: The reviewed head still pins aisimulate==0.13.0.dev202610280000000086, whose installed from_sweeper_candidate rejects both omitted and null agg_block_size before rendering. The new pre-merge test therefore remains red on both amd64 and arm64 until a published AISimulate build containing the upstream validation fix is pinned.

Reviewed all inline threads, review-body nits, and the CI report against current head aa6b637.

  • Python 3.14 / optional imports — addressed and resolved. AISimulate is declared only for Python <3.14. The remaining installed-generator tests guard their AISimulate and transitive vllm imports with pytest.importorskip. The older request to move those imports to module scope is not applicable: it would break collection in supported environments without AISimulate. The standalone test that originally prompted the nit has also been removed.
  • Docstring coverage warning — obsolete for the removed test. The new standalone test no longer exists. Regression coverage now uses the existing CLI table and its common output assertions; no new test function or duplicate setup remains.
  • Fixed published dependency — still a valid blocker. The dependency thread remains open. A fresh publication check still finds Nightly 87 as the latest release, predating merged fix: preserve unset generator block sizes aisimulate#609. Both affected real CLI cases fail on 87 and pass with the final upstream CI wheel; that wheel is used only for validation. The canonical pins still need a published build containing the fix.
  • Old CI report — superseded by the new head. The report on 6510fcf5f7 refers to the removed standalone test. The regression itself remains exposed by the updated CLI cases; the current head's checks are still running, so the old report is not evidence that this head is green or failing at the same test IDs.

The pushed implementation and current validation are documented in this update and the PR description. No further code change is needed for the evaluated review feedback; the published-dependency thread is the only unresolved review thread.

Addressed the independent review's coverage gap in c2399da (pushed, signature verified). Block-size expectations now come from the input fixture, are checked against the generated Candidate, and independently determine whether the rendered manifest must contain --block-size.

This catches both incorrect null → 64 normalization and loss of an explicitly requested block size, even when the Candidate and manifest agree with each other. No additional test case or golden change was needed.

Validation: all four existing real CLI cases pass with the final ai-dynamo/aisimulate#609 CI wheel (4 passed in 39.46s); applicable pre-commit checks pass. The published-dependency prerequisite remains open.

CI investigation and compatibility fixes are pushed through 8884b41; all new commits are GitHub-verified.

  • d364c58 completes the Nightly 93 benchmark pin and documented versions and adds the emitted host_caches telemetry key to the existing exact-field expectation. The callback/capture/JSONL equality checks remain intact. The five dependency smoke tests now pass.
  • c48ec03 makes the cancellation test explicitly synchronous. I first reproduced its failure on core 93 and its success on core 87, then compared actual FPM samples: the new async queue schedules the unrelated request in a third batch. This is a batching assumption in the test, not proof of failed cancellation. With synchronous admission, the test passes against core 93 in 0.01s and retains the two-pass assertion.
  • 8884b41 updates the three v1beta1 ClusterEnv goldens to the backend catalog selected by Nightly 93. Every changed leaf in the actual CI diff is --ais-backend-version 0.24.0 -> 0.30.0 (17 occurrences). Other golden fields and fixture inputs are unchanged. These flags must describe the same perf-model identity as the evaluated recommendation.

The v1beta2 ClusterEnv scenario already passes and produces a real Candidate, with the temporary block-size override removed.

Still open:

  1. Pareto: Candidate batch budget 32 versus emitted budget 64. Both published 92 and 93 reproduce it; the assertion is preserved.
  2. ARM optimizer replay: four synthetic/timed-trace smoke cases exceed their 30s timeout. Their Allure results identify the native replay call; the cause is not established yet.
  3. Separate CI execution problems: SGLang deploy checkout received HTTP 404 from GitHub's archive endpoint; the vLLM ARM CPU step aborted without a completed pytest report.

The PR description now contains the current results and remaining blockers. Passing compilation alone did not establish compatibility with this nightly; full CI confirmation of the fixes above is still required.

The Pareto investigation is now tracked upstream as AISimulate #701, with the signed fix in AISimulate #702.

The 64-token alignment was deliberately introduced in AISimulate #649 for backend safety. The defect is that it also changes already evaluated limits under preserve_engine_limits, producing a different deployment with the old Candidate's evaluation. The upstream fix preserves the alignment rule and rejects incompatible evaluated budgets with a clear re-evaluation error.

Dynamo commit 9af7134 is pushed and GitHub-verified. Its Pareto fixture now evaluates the deployable 64-token budget from the start; all Candidate-to-manifest equality assertions remain intact. With the upstream Python fix overlaid on the actual published Nightly 93 native runtime, the complete CLI table and renderer module report 22 passed in 25.25s. Upstream's full generator suite reports 887 passed, none skipped, including its permission tests run as a non-root user.

The cancellation finding did not need an AISimulate fix: actual FPM samples show the third pass belongs to the unrelated request delayed by the new async batch queue. The explicit synchronous cancellation fixture retains the two-pass assertion and passes.

AISimulate #702 is not yet merged/published; Nightly 93 still has the unsafe unaligned-preservation behavior. The ARM optimizer timeout investigation remains separate.

The ARM optimizer smoke adjustment is pushed in 1f19edd (GitHub-verified).

The existing four scenarios still execute real AIS predictions through current Dynamo bindings: aggregated/disaggregated, synthetic/timed-trace, both TP choices, and the existing router modes. They now use the repository-recommended small model and explicit bounded router domains. Zero/nonzero overlap credit is covered across the four scenarios, and both prefill-load scales remain in each. The complete cross-product/search behavior remains covered by the existing algorithm tests.

All original assertions and 30-second timeouts remain. No test is skipped or mocked to avoid native execution.

Validation with current Python wrappers, freshly rebuilt Dynamo bindings, the matching core 93, and published Python runtime 93: 46 passed, none skipped, in 94.49s. This includes the full optimizer module and both telemetry callback/capture/JSONL tests. The real smoke cases take 20.12s, 25.09s, 21.75s and 23.41s locally; the two native simulation crates are optimized in this otherwise development build.

The upstream Candidate-preservation correction is AISimulate #702, tracking #701. Its Full CI is now green after retrying the cancelled ARM wheel builder. It is not yet merged or published, so the current Nightly 93 pin does not yet contain that additional fail-closed correction.

The PR description has the updated evidence and remaining publication/full-CI checklist.
