🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not treat a broken SGLang import as legacy identity support.
If the import raises an unexpected exception, this detector returns False. The handler can then forward mm_hashes, and the publisher can leave engine-owned identity handling disabled. The default on __struct_fields__ hides a broken type contract in the same way. Catch only a specific, supported compatibility failure. Read the known struct field directly; otherwise let the error surface. SGLang defines MultimodalDataItem as a msgspec.Struct. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines, “If you must catch broadly, use except Exception: … and always re-raise after logging” and “Always flag getattr(obj, "attr", default) when the object's type is known.” As per path instructions, “Prefer failing fast: catch specific exceptions” and “Flag defensive getattr defaults on known types.”

Reject a conflicting disabled identity mode.
When sglang_uses_engine_owned_mm_identity() is true, an existing "0" makes the listener disable EngineMmState. The fallback path truncates each store at the first wide token, so it publishes only preceding text blocks and drops the multimodal block and its following chain. Set the variable to "1" for this engine or fail startup on the conflicting value.

Do not exclude engine IDs that still have a live mapping.
What happens on a relabel conflict:
- The
Some(_)branch pushesengine_idintodropped. - That
engine_idalready has an entry inids. - Lines 287-289 then insert the key into
excluded.
Why the mapping leaks:
translate_removechecksexcludedfirst (Line 313). It callscontinuebefore it reachesself.ids.remove(&key).- The first mapping stays in
idsandrefspermanently. - The router never receives a removal for its Dynamo-owned ID.
What breaks:
- After the engine evicts
E_IX, the worker still scores the full image chain. This overcounts in routing. - Later stores with parent
E_IXare dropped asexcluded_parent, althoughE_IXis mapped.
The same problem can affect any later block in remaining that already has a mapping. That case applies to both the relabel branch and the map-full branch.
Fix: Skip exclusion for every key that is still in ids.

setdefault, so a preexisting false value leaves engine-owned identity normalization disabled on a wide-pad SGLang build; its multimodal store suffixes are consequently discarded. - Original discussion: The relabel-conflict defect remains:
translate_storeadds an already-mapped engine ID todropped, excluderecords it, andtranslate_removeconsumes the exclusion before removing the liveids/refsmapping, leaving a stale routed entry after eviction. - Original discussion: Verified still present:
os.environ.setdefault("DYN_KV_EVENTS_ENGINE_OWNED_MM_IDENTITY", "1")preserves an existing false value such as0. With an engine-owned-identity SGLang build, the Rust listener then disables routing-label normalization and truncates stores at wide multimodal tokens, so the multimodal block and subsequent cache chain are not indexed. Startup must override the value to enabled or reject the conflicting configuration. - Original discussion: Verified still present:
sglang_uses_engine_owned_mm_identity()catches every import-time exception and treats a missing__struct_fields__contract as legacy identity support. On an engine-owned-identity build, an unrelated import or type-contract failure can therefore silently re-enable callermm_hashesand leave KV-event normalization in legacy mode instead of failing initialization.

Frontend multimodal feature hashes are 64 hex characters, while request-side routing deliberately derives its u64 identity from the first 16 characters. Parsing the entire forwarded label as u64 therefore overflows for normal requests, drops every span, and causes the wide-token block and following chain to be excluded, so Stage 2 silently degrades to text-prefix routing. Parse and validate the same 16-character prefix used by the request-side routing code.
🤖 AI Fix
Parse the label's first 16 hex characters into u64, reject labels without a valid 16-character hex prefix, and add coverage with a normal 64-character frontend hash.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The supported frontends forward opaque/64-character multimodal hashes unchanged (including Dynamo's {hash:016x} plus 48-zero marker), but parsing the entire label as a u64 overflows for normal nonzero values. The span is then discarded, so its wide tokens are classified as unmapped and the multimodal block and descendants are excluded, silently defeating routing-label support. Derive the label hash with the same hash_mm_identifier mapping used by request-side routing instead of parsing the whole string as a 64-bit integer.
🤖 AI Fix
Replace whole-string u64::from_str_radix parsing with the established request-side hash_mm_identifier(&label) mapping and retain fail-closed handling only for labels that mapping rejects.

This counterexample manually constructs placements with the obsolete engine IDs and bypasses the decoder and ZmqEventNormalizer, so it stays green even if the new identity translation regresses to keeping those IDs. alias_across_workers_leaves_no_stale_entries already drives the same two-worker alias/store/eviction sequence through the production normalizer and verifies the supported no-stale-entry outcome in both retained indexes.

sgl-project/sglang#43043 derives multimodal pad values from SGLang's own item identity (four 62-bit values per item), and Kimi rejects caller mm_hashes. That breaks Dynamo's SGLang multimodal routing in three ways: - Kimi requests fail. - KV event batches with wide token ids fail to decode, so whole batches are dropped, including text stores and removals. - Request and event routing keys no longer match. Contain all three without an SGLang change: - Stop forwarding mm_hashes to wide-pad SGLang builds. - Decode event token ids as u64 and classify tokens >= 1,000,000 as multimodal on wide-pad sources. - Exclude multimodal blocks and their descendants. Text-prefix stores, removals and clears still apply, so multimodal requests route on their text prefix. Also make an empty removal a no-op in the concurrent radix tree, even for a worker it has not seen: a store that is dropped entirely is published as one so event ids stay contiguous. Signed-off-by: maheshrbapatu <maheshbapatu@gmail.com>
- Classify Eagle blocks over the window conversion hashes: the block plus the next block's first token. Keep the overlap token the last surviving block needs. Both flag states use the same windows. - Track exclusions for every source. Values that did not fit in u32 are excluded with their descendants and removals even without the flag; the flag additionally excludes every value at or above 1,000,000. - Carry the engine-owned capability per source instead of through a process environment variable: KvEventPublisher(engine_owned_mm_identity) for the worker relay, and the standalone indexer's register API, --workers flag and selection-service worker records. - Treat empty removals as no-ops in the positional indexer too. - Catch only ImportError when probing SGLang, and read the struct field directly. - Test Eagle boundaries in both flag states, exclusion scoping by worker, DP rank and tier, legacy pads, and the per-source flag in the publisher, registry and selection service. Signed-off-by: maheshrbapatu <maheshbapatu@gmail.com>
…abel spans With sgl-project/sglang#45737, SGLang accepts per-item routing labels and reports them as block-relative spans on its KV events. Use them to route multimodal requests again: - Forward the frontend's per-item hashes as mm_routing_labels. - Rewrite SGLang's mm_routing_spans to Dynamo routing tokens. - Publish multimodal chains under Dynamo-owned block ids, tracked in a reference-counted id map, so a label shared by two images cannot leave stale index entries. SGLang builds without label support keep excluding multimodal blocks. Signed-off-by: maheshrbapatu <maheshbapatu@gmail.com>
An engine id could end up both mapped and excluded: after a relabeled re-store, after a re-store without spans (SGLang's label registry is bounded, so a cached block can lose its label), or when a block excluded while unlabeled is later stored with its label. Removal checked the exclusion first and skipped the mapping, so the index kept the block after the engine evicted it, and an excluded parent dropped valid child stores. Never exclude a mapped id, and clear an exclusion when a block is mapped. Also drop a test that built placements by hand instead of going through the normalizer, and a comment that restated its match arm. Signed-off-by: maheshrbapatu <maheshbapatu@gmail.com>

sglang#43043 adds pad_values as a class-level field on MultimodalDataItem for all processors, but only Kimi-family processors call set_identity to populate it from engine-owned state. The previous check returned True for every processor on a post-43043 build, silently disabling mm_hashes for Qwen and other models and regressing their image/video routing to text-prefix-only. Fix sglang_uses_engine_owned_mm_identity to accept the active mm_processor and check whether it is from the kimi module hierarchy. When no processor is available (conservative case), the function still returns True to avoid forwarding hashes the engine may reject. Update supports_external_mm_hashes and publisher.py to pass the processor from the engine's tokenizer_manager. Add direct probe tests that cover legacy schema, wide-pad + Kimi, and wide-pad + non-Kimi (Qwen) to catch future regressions in the detection logic without relying on mocked results. A regression in translate_remove would pass the existing assertion while leaving a stale entry. Apply the eviction event to both indexes and assert the score reaches zero after the text-prefix block is removed. Signed-off-by: maheshrbapatu <mbapatu@nvidia.com>
Separate processor hash acceptance from wide event-token detection. Keep exclusion overflow from faulting relay sources, preserve text evictions, and carry the format flag through the HiCache state-agent path. Retain main's liveness and replay-recovery changes. Carry forward request compatibility, wide-event detection, safe exclusion overflow and duplicate-ID validation without losing routing-label translation. Share each engine block's routing identity across cache tiers, while keeping per-tier alias counts and the existing total residency limit. Preserve mapped removals when a store cannot be admitted or its parent mapping is gone. Add cross-tier continuation and lifecycle regressions and document the required SGLang interface, URL behavior and capacity fallbacks. Part of ai-dynamo#16975 and ai-dynamo#17044. Overview
Restore image- and video-aware KV routing for SGLang builds with engine-owned multimodal identities and the routing-label interface proposed in sgl-project/sglang#45737. SGLang keeps its own cache identity; Dynamo translates labeled event spans into its existing request-side routing tokens and maps event block IDs so aliases remain removable. This PR includes #17126; without usable labels, its text-prefix fallback remains active.
Key Changes
Approximately 350 added production-code lines beyond Stage 1, excluding tests, documentation, and comment-only lines.
mm_routing_labelsinstead of identity overrides, and select thedynamoKV-event format when the operator has not selected one.Review
mm_labels.rsandmm_labels_tests.rsfirst. The first mapping is retained on conflicting stores, and a routing removal is emitted when the last holder on that tier leaves. Exclusion overflow suppresses parented stores for the affected worker/rank until cache clear while continuing to process existing evictions. Duplicate IDs are checked before exclusion state changes.Validation
CPU validation uses production normalization and real indexes:
host_continuation_uses_the_gpu_parents_routing_identityfailed before the fix with zero host hits; it now sees one hit and removes it after eviction.exclusion_overflow_preserves_the_relay_sourceverifies the relay remains usable; duplicate-ID regressions verify malformed stores cannot suppress text eviction.dynamoand emits spans, while explicitdefaultremains unchanged and emits none. The preceding code update passed 1,439 router tests (3 ignored), 126 publisher tests, and 18 focused Python tests. After merging main, the affected Python suites passed 98 tests and the wire suite passed 91. The latest update changes documentation only.
Earlier GPU experiments exercised previous revisions with two workers on one GH200, using Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct and a reduced Kimi-K2.5 configuration with random weights. They covered URL/data-URI images, frontend decoding, video, mixed media, and cache-tier lifecycle. Those historical results do not qualify the current merged code: no new end-to-end GPU serving or memory/throughput benchmark was performed for this update.
