Summary:

Adds a TensorRT-LLM render path to the standalone EPP: DYN_EPP_TOKENIZER_PROTOCOL=trtllm-render tokenizes through TensorRT-LLM's /v1/chat/completions/render endpoint (NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#19964), so the EPP can front stock trtllm-serve workers and route KV-aware off their native streaming KV events (DEP #11661 Milestone 3). Along the way the three per-engine render clients collapse into one, and the EPP strips the consumed Dynamo nvext from the body it forwards to any raw engine.

Details:

  • src/render_client.rs (new): one RenderClient for vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM; the protocol only selects the response field that carries the token IDs.
  • src/vllm_render_client.rs, src/sglang_renderer_client.rs (deleted): replaced by the shared client.
  • src/epp_standalone_config.rs: RendererProtocol::TrtllmRender, parsed from trtllm-render.
  • src/epp_router.rs: builds the shared client from the protocol and reports strip_nvext when the body carried a top-level nvext (object or null). Under trtllm-render it also rejects any request that resolves a cache salt (x-tenant-id, nvext.cache_salt, or cache_salt) with HTTP 400 before the render call, because TensorRT-LLM's streaming KV events carry no salt and the index could neither credit the salted request nor keep its blocks from being credited to unsalted ones.
  • src/picker.rs: PickResult::strip_nvext.
  • src/server.rs: rewrite_forwarded_body drops nvext and writes the native cache_salt by copying the other top-level members verbatim as borrowed RawValues; only token_ids injection still parses the tree.
  • src/epp.rs, src/lib.rs, src/render_http.rs, tests/ext_proc_test.rs, Cargo.toml: wiring, exports, comment updates, the new field in the test picker, and serde_json's raw_value feature.
  • examples/onramp/README.md, examples/onramp/agg.yaml, docs/.../vanilla-vllm-onramp.mdx: list all three protocols and document the nvext strip.

Validation:

  • cargo test -p dynamo-ext-proc: 166 passed. cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, docs_lint.py: clean.
  • E2E on a B200 Kubernetes cluster (2026-10-22): two stock trtllm-serve Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B pods (nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc1, native kv_events_config ZMQ publisher, tokens_per_block=32), one standalone EPP built from this branch with trtllm-render as a native sidecar on loopback, GAIE InferencePool and HTTPRoute behind an existing agentgateway. The manifests are test-only; the rc1 image predates #19964, so the sidecar overlays the render sources from the merge commit.
Check Result
Pod start ordering sidecar readiness gates pod Ready (27 s after the EPP container was ready)

Two findings on the standalone TensorRT-LLM path. Rechecked against the current head; the relevant Rust code is unchanged from the reviewed revision.

…aw engines

Address review on #17038:

- Replace the three per-engine render clients with render_client::RenderClient,
constructed with the RendererProtocol. The only engine-specific knowledge is
the response field that carries the token IDs (token_ids for vLLM and
TensorRT-LLM, input_ids for SGLang). Config values are unchanged; transport
helpers stay in render_http.rs. Tests exercise each engine's representative
response fixture against the shared client and reject the other shapes.

- The standalone picker reports strip_nvext when the body carried a top-level
nvext (object or explicit null), and the server's single body rewrite
removes it before writing the native cache_salt. The EPP has already
consumed the hints it needs; vLLM and SGLang ignore the field and
TensorRT-LLM (extra="forbid") rejects the request over it, so every raw
engine now receives the same plain OpenAI body. Dynamo-runtime pickers leave
it false because their workers read nvext.

One remaining allocation concern in the body rewrite path.

tmonty12 added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 22, 2026
Address review on #17038: the body rewrite parsed the whole request into a
serde_json::Value to drop one top-level key. Borrow the top-level members as
RawValue instead and copy every other member verbatim; only token_ids
injection, which edits inside nvext, still takes the parsed path. Enables
serde_json's raw_value feature for the crate.

Also trim doc comments to what the code does not already say and drop the
unused RenderClient::protocol accessor.

Walkthrough

The EPP now uses a shared renderer client for vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM. It tracks nvext presence during routing and rewrites forwarded bodies to remove nvext, add token data, and set top-level cache salt.

Changes

Renderer client and protocol support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared render client and protocol support
deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/render_client.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/epp_standalone_config.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/lib.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/render_http.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/vllm_render_client.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/sglang_renderer_client.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/Cargo.toml, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/examples/onramp/agg.yaml, docs/fern/pages/kubernetes/kv-aware-routing/vanilla-vllm-onramp.mdx
RenderClient replaces the protocol-specific clients and supports protocol-specific token response fields, bounded responses, URL validation, and HTTP error handling. Configuration accepts trtllm-render, and related documentation lists all three protocols.

Routing hint propagation

The EPP uses the shared renderer and distinguishes absent, null, and object nvext values. strip_nvext now flows from tokenization into PickResult, with updated fixtures and tests.

Forwarded body rewriting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Forwarded body rewriting
deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/src/server.rs, deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc/examples/onramp/README.md
Forwarding can remove nvext, add token data, and set a tagged top-level cache_salt. The rewrite preserves untouched JSON bytes where possible and falls back to the original body on rewrite errors. Tests cover malformed inputs, null and object nvext, byte preservation, and combined rewrites.

TensorRT-LLM now exposes a shared /v1/chat/completions/render endpoint and a
CPU-only trtllm-render process (NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#19964). Add a
"trtllm-render" value for DYN_EPP_TOKENIZER_PROTOCOL and a TrtllmRenderClient
that posts the unchanged chat body and reads token_ids from the returned
RenderedRequest, sharing the existing render_http transport and error mapping.

Add a raw-worker on-ramp manifest (trtllm-agg.yaml) with stock trtllm-serve
workers publishing native streaming KV events over ZMQ, a CPU-only renderer,
and the standalone EPP; document it in the onramp README and stop claiming
vllm-render is the only protocol.

Move trtllm-render from a separate Deployment and Service into the EPP pod as
a native sidecar (init container with restartPolicy: Always). It starts before
the EPP, gates pod readiness through an exec probe, listens on loopback only,
and every EPP replica carries its own renderer. Update the README section.

Keep the PR to the render-protocol change. The trtllm-agg.yaml manifest and
its README section depend on a TensorRT-LLM image that includes the render
endpoints, which no release ships yet; the protocol mentions in agg.yaml and
the vLLM on-ramp doc stay.

Approving to unblock. The cache_salt question on TRT-LLM KV events is worth answering before relying on salts with TRT-LLM pools; the rest are nits.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The redundant protocol matrices remain at the reviewed head. rejects_invalid_client_config repeats protocol-independent constructor validation for all three protocols, and rejects_another_engines_response_shape repeats equivalent mismatches between the two response-field classes. One representative protocol/config case and one mismatch in each distinct field direction preserve the observable contracts.
  • Original discussion: The two identified superfluous tests remain at the reviewed head: rewrite_top_level_matches_parsed_rewrite reimplements the production transformation as its oracle, while rewrite_forwarded_body_strip_then_token_data_leaves_only_epp_fields exercises a combination no picker produces. The retained strip, verbatim-copy, and malformed-body tests still protect the supported rewrite behavior.
  • Original discussion: Verified against TensorRT-LLM commit ec3352fee21a7a16ebd320d30a94e1a7d5ac3bda: its ZMQ BlockStored wire struct has neither a top-level cache-salt field nor populated extra_keys, while Dynamo only recovers the namespace from those locations. The EPP nevertheless includes cache_namespace when hashing/selecting and forwards a native cache_salt to the worker. Consequently salted TRT-LLM blocks are indexed without their namespace: salted requests cannot receive their actual overlap score, while unsalted requests can be credited with blocks whose TRT-LLM BlockKey salt prevents reuse. Add the TRT-LLM cache salt to its KV-event wire format and deserialize it into cache_namespace, or reject/disable cache namespaces for this protocol until that end-to-end contract exists.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present. At the pinned TensorRT-LLM merge, StreamingBlockStoredData carries hashes, tokens, multimodal keys, and LoRA identity but no cache salt. Dynamo therefore recomputes stored token hashes with cache_namespace=None, while requests containing cache_salt are scored with a namespaced hash. Salted requests cannot score their reusable blocks, and unsalted requests can be credited with salted blocks the worker cannot reuse. Carry and parse the salt in TensorRT-LLM KV events, or reject salted requests on this protocol until that transport exists.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present. The vanilla-vLLM on-ramp configuration lists sglang-renderer and trtllm-render, although the surrounding service, block-size, event-port, and batching settings remain vLLM-specific. Users can consequently treat this incomplete table as a valid non-vLLM configuration. Keep this row scoped to vllm-render, or add complete backend-specific configuration sections.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: TensorRT-LLM includes cacheSalt in its internal block key but its ZMQ BlockStored schema exposes neither cache_salt nor the salt through extra_keys. The EPP therefore indexes salted TRT-LLM blocks without their namespace, causing salted requests to miss reusable blocks and potentially crediting unsalted requests with incompatible blocks.

- CacheSaltForwarding::NativeVllm -> RawEngine; it covers vLLM, SGLang, and
  TensorRT-LLM.
- rewrite_top_level deserializes BTreeMap<String, &RawValue>, removes nvext,
inserts the salt as a RawValue, and serializes; the hand-written visitor and
byte writer are gone. Top-level key order is not meaningful to any engine.
- parse_token_ids matches on RendererProtocol directly; TokenIdsField is gone.
- Drop the parsed-vs-borrowed equivalence test and the strip+token_ids test
(no picker produces that combination); run the config and shape-mismatch
  tests for one protocol.

  • Requests with a namespace (x-tenant-id, nvext.cache_salt, or a top-level cache_salt) never score overlap. If the gateway sets x-tenant-id on every
request, KV-aware routing is effectively off for the whole pool.

At least we should document it. Approving provided that.

Should we also skip rendering at TRTLLM worker in this same MR?
Both chat completion and completion endpoints support it, and I want to make sure nothing else is missing for e2e integration.

To skip rendering on a TRT-LLM worker:

  1. Check once at admission that the worker's render_fingerprint (GET /server_info) equals the renderer's. If it doesn't, forward the original body.
  2. Add the render response's token_ids to the forwarded chat body as top-level prompt_token_ids, and keep messages. Don't use nvext.token_data, because TRT-LLM rejects nvext.
  3. Forward the original body unrendered instead when the request:
    • has a named tool_choice (the worker returns 400 with prompt_token_ids),
    • has a non-trivial render context (resolved_thinking or prompt_tokens_excluded_from_usage is set),

TensorRT-LLM's streaming KV events carry no cache salt, so the standalone
index files every TensorRT-LLM block unsalted: a salted request would never
score overlap, and its blocks would be credited to unsalted requests that
cannot reuse them. Under trtllm-render, reject any request that resolves a
cache namespace (x-tenant-id, nvext.cache_salt, or cache_salt) with 400

TensorRT-LLM emits the salt on BlockStored.

@hchings for the initial PR we just want to focus on the rendering for routing piece without modifying the original request body. This is how things are currently implemented for the other engines. Can follow up in a subsequent PR to have TRTLLM worker skip rendering.
