[TRTLLM-17241][fix] Start trtllm-render on a host with no GPU driver - #20842

The stub preload only runs when the process starts through the trtllm-render script; python -m tensorrt_llm.serve.render and any in-process import tensorrt_llm.serve.render still fail on a driverless host. Please state in the description how the Dynamo EPP integration (ai-dynamo/dynamo#17038) starts the renderer. If it imports the module or runs python -m, this change doesn't fix the reported failure, and the preload should move to a helper the integration can call before importing tensorrt_llm.
Nothing tests the real fallback. The new test mocks both ctypes.CDLL and glob.glob, so it never checks that the CUDA toolkit stub actually lets tensorrt_llm import on a host without libcuda.so.1, which is the claim of this PR. Please add a subprocess test that hides the driver library (for example, by putting a CUDA stub dir on the path in an l0_cpu container that has no driver) and runs the installed trtllm-render --help or a bad-model invocation, so that a later dependency that calls CUDA at import time is caught. At minimum, record in the description where this was validated manually.

CUDA stub discovery and renderer startup tensorrt_llm/serve/render/trtllm-render |
The launcher checks whether libcuda.so.1 loads. If it does not, the launcher searches CUDA toolkit locations and tries available stubs with RTLD_GLOBAL. It reports failures if no stub loads, then imports and invokes the renderer. |
Launcher packaging and validation setup.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_render_standalone.py, tests/unittest/scripts/test_serve_schema_packaging.py, docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/render-endpoints.md |
The installed script replaces the console entry point, and the packaging test stages the script for wheel building. Tests cover launcher execution, driver detection, stub selection and fallback, and failure when no stub loads. Documentation describes the container behavior and notes that python -m tensorrt_llm.serve.render does not perform this step. |

- Line 37: Update the stub-loading logic around ctypes.CDLL so it tries each
discovered stub when loading raises OSError, and reports an error only after
every candidate fails. Preserve successful loading of the first compatible stub.
- Line 48: Add a subprocess test for the launcher that uses a genuine CUDA
toolkit stub and verifies `--help` exits successfully, exercising the
`render_main` import after stub loading. Provision the real stub in the CPU test
job or explicitly skip when it is unavailable; do not rely on a mocked
`ctypes.CDLL` or renderer handoff.

_stub_candidatesdiscoverstargets/*/lib/stubs/libcuda.so, but no test creates that layout. Every path in theinstalledlist ofTestCpuOnlyStartupuseslib64/stubs/libcuda.so.fake_globalso filters by path depth, so a targets path cannot match the lib64 entries. `import tensorrt_llm` links `libcuda.so.1`, which a container that has no GPU does not provide, so `trtllm-render` failed at import with `libcuda.so.1: cannot open shared object file` on a CPU-only host. `trtllm-render` is now a small script outside the `tensorrt_llm` package. It tries to load `libcuda.so.1`; only when that fails does it load the CUDA toolkit's `libcuda.so` stub (from `$CUDA_HOME` or `/usr/local/cuda*`), print one line saying so, and then run the existing renderer entry point. With no stub either, it exits with a message naming what to install. Importing `tensorrt_llm` anywhere else, and `trtllm-serve`/`trtllm-bench`, are unchanged. `python -m tensorrt_llm.serve.render` does not get the fallback. The console-script entry for `trtllm-render` is replaced by a `scripts=` entry in setup.py, as for `trtllm-llmapi-launch`. …d launcher Review findings on the trtllm-render launcher: - A stub that cannot be loaded (wrong architecture, broken link) raised a bare OSError. The launcher now tries the remaining stubs and, when none loads, exits with a message naming each path it tried and why it failed. - The stub is now chosen in a fixed order: $CUDA_HOME, /usr/local/cuda, then the newest versioned /usr/local/cuda-*, instead of whichever sorts first. - The test found the script through the package directory, which does not hold it in a wheel install. It now finds it with shutil.which, runs it with --help to check the renderer starts through the launcher, and covers the stub order, $CUDA_HOME, a stub that fails to load, and no usable stub. Still one test. Signed-off-by: Erin Ho <14718778+hchings@users.noreply.github.com>
… logger The launcher reported that it loaded the CUDA toolkit stub with print to stderr. It now returns the stub path and main() reports it through the TensorRT-LLM logger once the package is imported, so it follows TLLM_LOG_LEVEL like the rest of TensorRT-LLM output. The test checks the returned path instead of captured stderr; still one test. Signed-off-by: Erin Ho <14718778+hchings@users.noreply.github.com>
…ng test setup.py installs tensorrt_llm/serve/render/trtllm-render through scripts=, but test_wheel_contains_serving_schemas builds its wheel from a minimal staged copy of the repo that did not include it, so bdist_wheel failed in build_scripts with a missing file. Stage the script like the other two scripts the test already copies. Signed-off-by: Erin Ho <14718778+hchings@users.noreply.github.com>

Dynamo EPP mode (integration MR: feat(epp): add TensorRT-LLM render protocol to the standalone EPP by tmonty12 · Pull Request #17038 · ai-dynamo/dynamo) needs to run the shared renderer from TRTLLM on CPU-only env. Currently TRTLLM import will error out w/o CUDA. This MR is to make TRTLLM import work for CPU-only env in the scope of shared renderer.
