Reviewed at cf01e4a. The diff base is the stack parent sachalmalick/planner-batch-observations__LLM-186, merge-base bcbc662 — confirmed with gh api repos/ai-dynamo/dynamo/compare/... rather than local ancestry, since my clone is shallow.
Intent, as I read it from the description and the diff: give the Planner an opt-in provider that owns the batch-observation HTTP clients and a Redis client, and publish each drain-limit decision as a versioned llm-d hash plus an absolute PEXPIREAT in one transaction, with a rejecting no-op provider when batch_scheduling.enabled=false.
How I verified
Worktree at the PR head. Everything below ran on AMD64 inside the repo's …-dynamo-runtime-test image with the head tree overlaid on PYTHONPATH (PEP-420 namespace overlay, so dynamo.planner comes from the tree while the compiled dynamo._core still resolves from site-packages), against a real redis:7-alpine.
- Base vs head, same image: base
875 passed, head892 passedover the full planner unit suite. The only delta is the 17 tests this PR adds. Both trees show one identical failure intest_power_annotation_contract.py, which is my harness not shippingdeploy/power-agent— not a PR effect. - The default path is unchanged.
BatchSchedulingConfig().enabledisFalse; aNonebatch_providerresolves toNoopBatchSchedulingProvider; and importingplanner_factoryplusbatch_runtimeleavesredisout ofsys.modulesentirely. A deployment that does not opt in behaves as before. - Shutdown cannot race an actuation.
run()puts the tick loop and_shutdown_runtime()in the same coroutine with shutdown in thefinally, so no actuation can still be in flight when the zero-rate pause is published, and a positive lease cannot land after it. I tried to build that race and could not — it is closed by construction, which is worth knowing.
Lease lifecycle, measured against real Redis
| Transition | Observed |
|---|---|
| acquire | key written with all five fields, PTTL = the full lease |
| renew before expiry | fields overwritten, TTL extended; idempotent for a repeated decision |
| expire mid-flight | the whole hash is deleted — exists=0, pttl=-2, hash={}. Not just the rate: api_version, pool_id and decision_id go with it, and the Planner is not told |
| late renewal after a lapse | returns normally; HSET silently recreates the key. No lapse signal reaches the caller |
| two holders on one key | both calls succeed; the later write wins outright, no fencing |
| ungraceful exit | nothing is published; the last lease stands until its own valid_until and then the key vanishes. Worst-case stall is one drain_lease_duration_seconds |
What the consumer does with a missing key is llm-d's behaviour and is outside this repo, so I could not verify that half — flagging it as the boundary of what I checked.
Mutation-testing the new tests
Nine mutations of the lease semantics; eight killed, one survived. Killed: dropping PEXPIREAT from the transaction, transaction=False, dropping the expiry guard, a permissive shutdown lease, skipping the shutdown pause, dropping the single-decision guard, dropping the pool-ownership check, dropping the results[1] check. The survivor is in the batch.py comment below.
Outcome
Two P2 and three P3, none of them a blocker. That is over my approval bar on count, so this is a comment rather than an approval — I am happy to re-review as soon as they are addressed or argued down.

Re-verified at the same head
Head cf01e4a4 has not moved since the last round, and no commit was pushed. All five findings stand, re-measured by execution. I am not raising anything new against this diff.
Two P2 and three P3 remain open, so this stays unapproved. One line of my own batch.py comment is corrected on its thread.
Push shape, base state, and what the merge actually does
The head is the same commit I reviewed. A fresh fetch reported no update at all, so there was no forced update. The range from the base tip to the head is one commit with one parent and no merge commits. Author and committer dates are equal per commit and spread over six separate minutes, so no rebase collapsed them. The issue timeline records one committed event and no head_ref_force_pushed event.
The base is another open pull request, #14196, not main. Its tip is bcbc6628. That commit is an ancestor of this head, so the merge base and the base tip are the same commit. I merged the base tip into the head and got Already up to date with zero conflicting files.
Because the base tip is the merge base, the base branch has gained zero commits since the merge base. The interaction check is therefore empty. For contrast, main has gained 450 commits since this stack forked, and 21 of them touch a file in this diff. Those belong to the bottom of the stack, not to this pull request.
Each finding re-measured, with its control
All five sites are introduced by this commit. batch.py exists at the base tip but has no apply_drain_limit. batch_runtime.py is a new file. Both dependency lines are additions.
batch.py:870, P2. Confirmed against Redis 7.4.11. Details and the correction are on that thread.
pyproject.toml:22, P2. The line is still there, and the lazy import still holds:
after importing planner_factory and batch_runtime: 'redis' in sys.modules = False
batch_runtime.py:102, P3. Confirmed:
from_url #2 returned in 0.00006s -> NO connection attempt
CONTROL empty url -> ValueError redis_url must be non-empty
first apply_drain_limit raised after 0.000s: ConnectionError: Error 61 connecting to 127.0.0.1:6399.
The control matters. from_url does reject what it can reject early, so the silence about a bad address is a gap rather than a general absence of validation.
container/deps/requirements.planner.txt:25, P3. The boundary is exact, and the end-to-end effect is a clean A/B on one variable:
redis 5.0.0 async Redis.aclose = False
redis 5.0.1 async Redis.aclose = True
redis==5.0.0 provider.shutdown() -> RAISED AttributeError: 'Redis' object has no attribute 'aclose'
redis==5.0.1 provider.shutdown() -> OK (no raise)
base.py:88, P3. Confirmed, with a control on the same object:
Noop.apply_drain_limits([]) -> returned None (accepted)
CONTROL Noop([decision]) -> RAISED RuntimeError batch drain actuation is not configured
Native.apply_drain_limits([]) -> RAISED ValueError single-pool batch scheduling requires exactly one drain decision
Which lane runs each new test file, by running the lane expressions
Every new test in this diff is selected by a named lane. I checked this because a file here carries no suite marker, and I wanted to know whether that left it unrun. It does not.
| file | tests | lane | selected |
|---|---|---|---|
test_batch_runtime.py |
9 | planner-test, pr.yaml:898, pre_merge and planner and gpu_0 |
9 of 9 |
test_environment.py |
10 | same lane | 10 of 10 |
test_batch_environment.py |
80 | dynamo-pipeline, pr.yaml:953, pre_merge and (parallel or defaulted) and not (vllm or sglang or trtllm) and (gpu_0) |
80 of 80 |
test_batch_environment.py has no module-level markers. The repository root conftest.py adds pre_merge, gpu_0 and defaulted to it, and the second lane selects on defaulted. Under the planner lane expression its 80 tests are all deselected, and under the parallel lane expression the 9 tests of test_batch_runtime.py are all deselected. Neither file runs twice.
I am not raising the missing marker as a finding on this pull request. test_batch_environment.py already exists at the base tip with 1194 lines and no module-level markers. This diff adds 157 lines to it. The marker choice belongs to the base branch, not here.

- Line 1126: Update the fence-key construction near `fence_key` so the control
and fence keys always share a Redis Cluster slot: preserve the current suffix
form when `control_key` contains a valid non-empty hash tag, and otherwise wrap
the full control key in a hash tag before adding the suffix.
- Around line 1247-1262: Update _eval_with_retry to retry only Redis connection

immediately. Log the first transport failure before retrying, and preserve the
existing single-retry limit.

Failure details
No job failed outright; 1 job, dynamo-runtime / mypy, was cancelled, and its Run mypy (components) step is marked as failed. That cancellation is why dynamo-status-check failed.
⏹️ dynamo-runtime / mypy: cancelled after `Run mypy (components)` step failed
Job: dynamo-runtime / mypy · Failed step: Run mypy (components) · Logs: gh run view --job 126149921531 -R ai-dynamo/dynamo --log-failed
The Run mypy (components) step ran for about 13 minutes (19:25–19:38 UTC) and the API reports it as failure. The job was then cancelled about 5 minutes later (19:43 UTC, ~20 min after start), and GitHub returned no logs for it, so the mypy errors can't be shown here. No other job in the run failed, so this is not a fail-fast cancel. It looks like a job timeout or a manual cancel. Run pre-commit/mypy on the changed Python files locally, or rerun the job, to see the errors.

Approve at 083cb55871. The new Redis actuation path works on a real server, and our five earlier findings are closed. One P2 is open, on the tests.
- P2, inline: no test runs the two Lua scripts (
test_batch_environment.py:1924). - Open item: this diff needs code from #14194, #14198, #14195 and #14196, and none of that code is on
mainyet. - Open item: the
PRworkflow did not run on this head. The onlyPRworkflow run that contains this commit is the run of #14200 at05ff3e56b4. Its planner lane passed these tests.
Test, probe, dependency, merge and CI results for this head.
Setup: I used a main runtime test image (1e1a9e4593, Python 3.12.3) with this tree on PYTHONPATH and the planner requirements installed. redis-server 7.4.11 from the public redis:7.4 image ran in the same container.
| run | base 3f52ff7122 |
head 083cb55871 |
|---|---|---|
| the three changed test files | 107 passed | 148 passed |
planner lane pre_merge and planner and gpu_0, serial |
2267 passed, 2 failed | 2308 passed, 2 failed |
The head adds 41 passing tests, which are the tests of this PR. The same 2 tests fail on both trees. Neither test is in a file that this PR changes, and both depend on the image.
Real Redis, 32 checks, all passed with redis-py 8.1.0 and 6.2.0:
- A stale writer is rejected after a newer bootstrap, and its shutdown pause cannot replace a newer positive lease.
- An expired decision is rejected before any
EVAL. - A reused decision ID with a new payload is rejected locally. A reused sequence with a new payload gets
ResponseErrorand writes nothing. A lower sequence returns0and writes nothing. - After the fence key is deleted, the writer is rejected. A fresh writer gets epoch 1 again, and the old writer, also at epoch 1, stays rejected.
- A proxy dropped one real reply: the apply succeeded, and the script ran twice with the same sequence. When every reply was dropped, the call failed, and a retry of the same decision then succeeded with no new sequence.
- A lost bootstrap reply gives epoch 2, and that writer can apply.
- A reply that never arrives ends in
TimeoutErrorafter 4.01 s and twoEVALcalls. That is inside the2 x (connect + socket)budget of the configuration check.
Dependency: redis>=6.2.0,<9.0.0. At 6.2.0, aclose, eval, the from_url options and redis.crc.key_slot all exist. The planner image build for #14200 resolved redis==8.1.0 on Python 3.13.16. PyPI has no 9.x release yet.
Merges with git merge-tree --write-tree: with the base tip 3f52ff7122, the result is the head's own tree. With main at 86b2a65699, the merge is clean (tree 2386e316c2), and it carries the whole stack.
CI on this head: Pre Merge passed (run 37548734330). A second Pre Merge run (37548734153) was cancelled one second after it started, and its pre-merge-status-check failure reports that cancel.
Not measured: Valkey 8.0.10, which the batch-gateway example deploys. Also not measured here: Redis Cluster, and how llm-d reads the key. The planner image uses Python 3.13, and only the CI run of #14200 tested these files on it.

This connects Planner's batch observation and drain-decision interfaces to lifecycle-owned HTTP and Redis clients. It gives the native environment a bounded, fail-closed actuation path with Redis-time leases, fenced writers, and deterministic retries.
