Summary

  • Build release-producing Linux wheels in architecture-specific manylinux 2.28 images. Maturin emits an unrepaired wheel; standalone auditwheel repairs and verifies the final platform tag.
  • Use bundled CPython 3.12 in the digest-pinned CI/FPE images so setup does not fail on AlmaLinux. Check the image's native/audit tools, pin Rust to the nightly builder's 1.98.0, and keep toolchains outside the source checkout.
  • Apply the audited builder to Full CI, nightly release artifacts, standalone FPE qualification, and the Docker platform-wheel path. Retain native macOS delocate behavior and the benchmark-only temporary wheel path.
  • Exercise the bootstrap and repair behavior, including command order, both architectures, missing/broken tools, missing/duplicate wheels, incorrect policy tags, and failed repair.

Validation

  • 128 local workflow/qualification tests passed; Ruff 0.14.1 check/format and release-manifest checks passed.
  • Full CI on merge commit be8f6974: all 56 validation jobs passed. Release staging awaits its separate environment approval.
  • Standalone FPE audit: final-commit wheel preparation passed; the broader support matrix remains in progress.

📝 Summary

Risk level: Medium.

Three areas need human attention:

  1. Verify both pinned images contain the required CPython, compiler, auditwheel, and patchelf tools.
  2. Verify repaired wheels carry the correct architecture tag and pass release-wheel validation.
  3. Run the affected CI, FPE, release, and Docker workflows with both x86_64 and aarch64 runners.

Changed behavior and contracts

  • Linux builds now use digest-pinned manylinux 2.28 images.
  • scripts/build_manylinux_wheel.py maps x86_64/amd64 to manylinux_2_28_x86_64 and aarch64/arm64 to manylinux_2_28_aarch64.
  • The builder rejects non-Linux hosts, unsupported architectures, missing auditwheel, and non-empty output directories.
  • Maturin creates an unrepaired wheel. auditwheel repair creates the final wheel. auditwheel show inspects it.
  • The builder requires exactly one input and one repaired aisimulate wheel.
  • The shared action selects /opt/python/cp312-cp312, verifies cc, c++, make, auditwheel, and patchelf, exports PyO3 and toolchain paths, and installs pinned stable Rust.
  • Release artifact builds use the new builder on Linux.
  • macOS delocate behavior remains unchanged.

Evidence supplied

  • The source confirms pinned x86_64 and aarch64 image digests in the affected workflows.
  • The source confirms migration of application test-wheel, release-artifact, and standalone FPE builds.
  • The source confirms the Dockerfile performs standalone repair and platform selection.
  • The supplied validation reports Ruff checks, 80 passing CI contract tests, and verification of the ARM64 image contents.

Evidence still missing

  • No full affected-workflow results are supplied.
  • No x86_64 image-content verification result is supplied.
  • No produced-wheel validation result is supplied.
  • Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.

Merge readiness

Technical quality is supported by the builder contracts and targeted tests. Merge readiness is not confirmed until the affected workflows produce and validate wheels on both architectures.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a shared manylinux Python and Rust setup action, centralizes Linux wheel building and auditwheel repair, and updates Docker, CI, release, and contract-test workflows to use the new process.

Changes

Manylinux wheel pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manylinux environment setup
.github/actions/setup-manylinux-python-rust/action.yml, tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py
The new action validates bundled CPython 3.12 and required build tools, exports build paths, and installs the pinned stable Rust toolchain. Contract tests cover the setup requirements and failure behavior.
Manylinux wheel build and repair
scripts/build_manylinux_wheel.py, python/aisimulate/docker/Dockerfile
The builder maps supported architectures to manylinux 2.28 tags, builds an unrepaired wheel with Maturin, repairs it with auditwheel, validates one wheel and its platform tag, and inspects the repaired result. The Dockerfile uses the same explicit repair flow.
CI and release integration
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/fpe-support-matrix.yml, scripts/build_release_artifacts.py, tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py
Wheel jobs use digest-pinned manylinux containers, the shared setup action, and the centralized builder. Linux release builds use the centralized builder; non-Linux builds retain Maturin. Workflow contract tests cover the migration.

Explanation

The description explains the main change and lists validation, but it does not follow the required template. It omits the Review map, Tracking, and Modeling or data provenance sections, and it does not provide the required evidence fields for CI results, reviewed commits, negative cases, or expected-value derivation.

Resolution

Rewrite the description using the required headings. Add the risk level, riskiest files and contracts, compatibility or rollback concerns, exact test commands and results, Fast CI and Full CI status, CodeRabbit and Codex reviewed commits, negative or boundary cases, expected-value derivation when applicable, before/after output when applicable, and Tracking entries. Set Modeling or data provenance to N/A if it does not apply.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The description reports Ruff validation, 80 contract tests, and ARM64 image-tool verification. It does not name the exact commands, state negative or boundary results, or distinguish local, fake-runner, parity, and production evidence. It also does not cite an inactive nested workflow as hosted CI evidence, so the explicit failure condition is not met.

Resolution

Provide the exact commands and results. Identify negative or boundary checks, such as unsupported architecture and missing-tool cases. Label each result as local, fake-runner, parity, or production evidence, and state when a hosted workflow was not run.

Reviewed head 5f94f4d. The standalone auditwheel approach is reasonable, and the Linux Docker/macOS platform-wheel jobs passed. Local validation also passed: 110 workflow/qualification tests, Ruff check/format on the changed Python files, and the release-manifest check.

The Python bootstrap regression below blocks merge: all four application-test-wheel/release-artifact jobs fail, so the downstream application tests do not execute. Please fix the setup across Full CI and standalone FPE, add coverage for the manylinux interpreter bootstrap, and obtain fresh successful Full CI and standalone FPE results.

The PR also needs the review-ready label: its absence failed direct Fast CI and caused CodeRabbit to skip review despite the green status. Required CODEOWNER approval is still missing.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo pins aisimulate==0.1.0.dev2 for Python 3.11–3.13. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::pyproject.toml:17]
  • Its wheel builder downloads AISimulate as a binary-only published wheel into the shared distribution directory, expecting an ABI3-compatible artifact. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/templates/wheel_builder.Dockerfile:636-649]
  • Runtime images install aisimulate*.whl directly with --no-deps; the repaired wheel must therefore retain its expected package filename and usable platform tags. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/templates/vllm_runtime.Dockerfile:234-236] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/templates/sglang_runtime.Dockerfile:121-132] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/templates/trtllm_runtime.Dockerfile:157-159]
  • Dynamo explicitly expects CPython 3.12 manylinux 2.28 wheels for both x86_64 and aarch64 in its runtime packaging assumptions. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/templates/trtllm_runtime.Dockerfile:476-479]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The compatibility reference independently targets manylinux_2_28_x86_64 and manylinux_2_28_aarch64 wheels, with architecture-specific CI jobs and verification. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docker/Dockerfile:22-32] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::.github/workflows/build-platform-wheels.yml:28-40]
  • Its release Dockerfile verifies wheels after applying the manylinux compatibility tag, providing a comparable cross-repository packaging contract. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docker/Dockerfile:64-70]

The Python bootstrap regression and review follow-ups are fixed in c57caa6 and 3e82de8, both included in merge commit be8f697. The merge tree exactly matches the final tested PR tree.

  • The manylinux jobs select bundled CPython 3.12, check native/audit tools, and use Rust 1.98.0 with toolchain files outside the checkout.
  • Added executable bootstrap and wheel-repair contract tests, including missing/broken tools, both architectures, command order, missing/duplicate wheels, wrong tags, and repair failure. Local workflow/qualification tests: 128 passed; Ruff and release-manifest checks passed.
  • Post-merge Full CI: all 56 validation jobs passed, including both architectures' application-wheel and release-artifact jobs and downstream application tests. The two release-staging jobs await their separate environment approval.
  • All four review threads are resolved.
  • Standalone FPE validation: final-commit wheel preparation passed; the broader support matrix is still running and is not yet a completed qualification result.

Harrison merged the PR while the final review follow-up was being validated, before I submitted an approval. This records post-merge validation rather than a retrospective pre-merge approval.
