Manual backport of #4445800.

Backport as requested in #441311 (comment).

I would love to hear back from you, @simonzkl, if this restores functionality for you. Again I am sorry, this happened, but I hope the fast resolution did not cause big interruptions on your side.

I was able to work around it when the API was changed, so no big deal. But this is much nicer! Really appreciate you looking into it. Thank you!
